018. remember before

(remember before)

"The Midnight Witch, the most powerful being in the universe..."

Margot heard this in her dreams. Every night. Every dream. The words echoed in her brain like a bang in an empty room. She heard the woman's crude, old voice scratch every inch of her cells as she woke with a jolt.

"Another dream?" the hybrid beside her asked as he sat up in their shared bed in Mystic Falls, turning on the small bedside lamp before his hand moved to hers.

Margot nodded as she attempted to shake off the odd dream. "I just wish I knew what it meant. It must be to do with my powers– I mean in the dream all I can see are these blue wisps that look exactly like mine but... I don't know, it's too early for this and I can't drink enough coffee for me to be able to understand."

Klaus chuckled softly as he pulled her to lean on his side, her head resting on his shoulder as his hands moved down to hold her now seven month pregnant belly. The twins seemed to like their space because as soon as his hand touched them, they kicked right back causing him to roll his eyes.

"You're kids are little shits."

The heretic chuckled as she moved her hand down to replace his and felt a much gentle kick. "They just like their Mommy more."

He playfully rolled his eyes before grinning slyly as he maneuvered them so he was on top. "I like their Mommy too. Does Mommy want to give me a kiss?"

"I'm gonna kill myself!" they heard Kol shout from the room next door.

"How?" Klaus yelled back.

"How? What the bloody hell is wrong with you, Nik?" Rebekah yelled from her room next to Kol's.

"I was gonna jump– Stop stealing my thunder, Bekah!"

"Do a flip!" Margot yelled back, causing laughter to sound from all four bedrooms, including Elijah's, who would, in the morning, pretend he did nothing of the sort.

— — —

"Do I look fat, Nik?" Margot asked, as she rubbed her very pregnant belly inside her and Klaus' shared closet as she searched for something comfortable to wear. The task seemed almost impossible now.

The hybrid chuckled from behind her as he wrapped his arms around her, resting his hands at the bottom of her belly. "You look ravishing, my love. If we didn't have to go, I'd take you to bed right now."

She grinned softly as she turned to face him before she snaked her arms up to his neck, playing with the hair on the nape of his neck, "You always know what to say."

Four Months Earlier

Margot made her way into Whitmore College. It had been two weeks since they had gotten back to the real world.

She glanced down at the paper in her hand before looking at the doors.

"27. 28. 29. 30!" she whispered quietly before knocking on the door. She could hear two heartbeats. It was them.

The door opened not a moment later which revealed a blonde and a brunette who both held shocked looks on their faces.

"Ma- Maggie?" Elena muttered as she pulled the heretic into a hug, Caroline following suit.

The heretic held onto the two women tightly. She had missed them more than she realized.

Their grip had also tightened on her which caused her to smile. "Not too tight. Wouldn't want to crush the little ones," Margot told them with a newfound softness in her voice.

They quickly pulled away, the same shocked looks appearing on their faces as they glanced at her stomach.

"Little ones?" Caroline asked excitedly after a moment of realization.

"You're pregnant?" Elena asked with the same amount of excitement.

Margot nodded with a bright smile on her face. "Twins."

Caroline squealed before speeding across the room and grabbing a binder, "We have so much planning to do! Get your beautiful asses over here!"

The heretic chuckled but nodded nonetheless. Her hand moved down to hold Elena's before they both walked over to the overjoyed blonde.

"Is Damon... Bonnie?" Elena asked as they looked through Caroline's baby shower binders.

"Damon's back. Bon Bon's still there. She sacrificed herself so we could come home. My, uh, my brothers there too."

"Kai?" Elena asked softly.

Margot smiled as she nodded. One night, she had gotten wasted and told Elena small bits of her childhood. Nothing to do with her father, only Kai. She told her about their hide-and-seek matches, their magic lessons, and even the time when Kai taught her how to bake. Sure, she wasn't very good, nor was he, but it was a nice memory.

Elena knew nothing about his family or Margot's father for that matter, not until Katherine told her that night in the tomb.

"Yeah. Kai's alive."

Elena smiled as she grabbed the girl's hand and gave it a squeeze, "I'm happy for you, Maggie. We'll get them back. I'm sure of it."

The heretic nodded, "Kol and I are working to find a spell. Since he used to be a witch and is as old as a dinosaur he knows practically everything."

"The Mikaelsons are back in town?" Caroline asked.

"They came back as soon as they found out we weren't on a honeymoon in Bora-Bora. They aren't here to hurt any of you, I promise. They're just here to help me and Nik," she quickly reassured. She knew her friends were paranoid about the family of vampires.

"So is... Klaus the dad?"

She chuckled, "Yes. Nik is the father."

Elena laughed, "Those are gonna be some good-looking babies. You both have the genetics of gods."

Margot blushed as she stared down at the binder, "Shut up."

"Was he good?" Caroline teased which only made Margot blush harder.

"He's a thousand years old. Of course, he's good."

"Not as good as you, I bet."

"No one's as good as me," Margot answered Elena with a smirk which earned a blush from the brunette.

Prison World 1 Day After They Left

"I brought you a present," Kai said as he held up a small bear, "Ta-da! Miss Cuddles. I thought you might want to bring her along."

Bonnie raised her brow, "Thanks."

Kai sighed, "I know you think I'm a monster. I mean, I did murder or heavily maim most of my immediate family... But after a long period of self-reflection, I've come to the conclusion that I could've handled my anger better."

"You said you wanted to get out of here, and I quote, 'give the rest of the Gemini coven an excruciating death'."

Kai's hand came up to his neck as he awkwardly chuckled, "Ah, I didn't mean it. Honestly, I would do anything to get my family back. And the thing I'm most scared of is trying to figure out how to live in the world again. I'm sort of hoping you've been a positive influence on me. You're a good person, Bonnie. Brave, loyal, patient. I want to be like that for Margot and her kids," he grinned before picking up Miss Cuddles, "What do you say?"

The witch rolled her eyes, "Let's just go home."

Kai nodded before he pulled out the ascendant that he had put back together and handed it to the witch.

They glanced up through the opening to see the eclipse about to start.

"It's now or never."

"Yep..." Bonnie muttered before she cut her hand open and let the blood drop onto the center stone.

As she began to chant, Kai grabbed onto her. "Just in case you thought you'd try to go without me."

Bonnie moved her foot so it was touching Miss Cuddles' head as she began to chant once again. Slowly, the ascendant opened.

Kai grinned, "So long 1994."

All of the sudden, she stopped chanting.

"What the hell is happening?"

"I don't know," Bonnie answered.

"Keep going. Hurry."

"I can't!"

"Keep going!"

Bonnie pulled her arm from the siphoner's grip, "I can't. I've lost my magic."

"What are you talking about? You were just doing the spell!" Kai yelled before grabbing onto the witch. However, when he tried to siphon her, nothing happened. There was no magic to siphon.

"There's nothing there. There's no magic."

"That's so strange... I wonder if I accidentally put it somewhere. Oh, I remember now. I put it somewhere safe."

"Where did you put your magic?"

"You remember saying you wanted to be more like me? Brave, loyal, patient."

Kai turned, "You put it in the bear. Didn't you?" He grabbed his bag, throwing out the contents only to see Miss Cuddles was gone. "Come on!" he yelled as he threw the bag across the room.

"Where's the stupid bear? Hmm?"

"Oh, it's gone. I guess we're stuck here. Forever. Sorry."

Present Time

It was Thanksgiving. However, instead of being at home, Klaus, Margot, Stefan, Damon and Alaric were in Portland.

"Is that the reason Caroline assigned me to the turkey and the cranberries?" Alaric asked as they walked towards an empty field. "Stefan wasn't invited."

Damon chuckled, "See what you're doing? Now, we're pulling your weight. I really hope you figure this out before Christmas."

Stefan rolled his eyes, "Yeah, well, I'm glad you all are finding amusement in this."

Apparently, he and Caroline had a fight. He and Charlie had broken up three months before. It wasn't working, yet again, and now he had found out Caroline had feelings for him.

Very complicated.

"Why don't you date her, Dad?" Margot asked from beside the man.

Stefan glanced down at her, "I don't think about her that way. She's my friend."

"Who'd make a great girlfriend. Look! One, she's hot, objectively," Damon started. "Two, she puts up with Damon," Alaric added.

"Big plus. Three! Very, very well organized."

Margot chuckled, "Organizational skills?"

"There are no drawbacks to this woman, Stef."

Alaric sighed, "Ehh, she did sleep with you... And she kissed Maggie."

"Another two plusses!"

Stefan rolled his eyes as they walked through a gate to an empty field, "Ah look. We're here. Behold, the Gemini coven. Exactly how it looked four months ago. Like I said, uh, 3000 miles ago, it's not here. Can we go home now, please?"

Alaric sighed, "You know what, check the GPS again. Just because we don't see anything, doesn't mean it doesn't exist."

"Not unlike Caroline's feelings for Stefan."

Stefan sighed, "Hilarious. Keep them coming."

Damon grinned as he grabbed onto the bear before speaking in a high-pitched voice, "Oh, no! Is Stefan feeling sensitive about ruining his friendship with Caroline? She really liked him, and he broke her heart."

"See, Stefan. Even the bear knows," Klaus said with an amused tone.

"I saw that from a mile away and my brain is made of cotton!"

Margot rolled her eyes, "Give me the stupid bear."

Damon frowned in confusion but handed her the bear.

"See, witches are tricky. Kai's family especially. They love their spells, invisibility being one of them," she spoke before she threw the bear across the field which took down the spell and revealed a familiar white picket home. "I told you it was here."

Damon ran up to the front porch before grabbing the bear and holding it up, "Miss Cuddles, one! Invisible creepy mansion, zero."

He turned back before knocking on the door as Stefan spoke, "Anyone want to take a stab at how Bonnie's teddy bear undid whatever was cloaking this place?"

"You said without laughing."

"Witches can put away their magic for safekeeping. Bonnie could have put her magic in Miss Cuddles."

"Why would Bonnie put her magic in Miss Cuddles?"

"To keep Kai from using her to get out," Margot sighed.

Damon sighed before opening the door only to be stopped by a barrier spell.

"Can't say I missed that," Alaric said as Damon turned to him, "It's all yours, brother."

Alaric slowly walked into the witch house before disappearing up the stairs.

The group stayed silent, Margot choosing to sit on one of the chairs as Klaus moved beside her. She was tired already and sore.

She hummed peacefully as she leaned into his side. "Come with me?" she asked as she moved to get up, Klaus doing the same not a moment after.

Stefan glanced over when he saw his daughter leaving, "Maggie? Where are you going, sweetheart?"

She sent him a small smile, "I just want to see something. You know where it is."

With that, she and Klaus walked away.

The forest hadn't changed at all. Her and Kai's little pathway was still intact, spare for some fallen branches, but other than that, it was as if it hadn't been decades. Not long after, they reached another opening with a small house in the middle.

Klaus' eyes widened slightly. He knew where she was taking him now. "Are you sure, love?" he asked before they walked up onto the small porch.

"I need to go back at least once," she answered before opening the door.

There was no barrier so they were able to go inside. The house was rundown, clearly, no one had lived in it since she did.

They walked through the small hallway, glancing down at the small shoes that lined the side, all neatly placed. They were hers.

They continued walking in, walking past the kitchen where drawings littered the fridge door. All of them were absolutely dreadful but they were cute nonetheless.

"Maybe I should call you my little artist," Klaus teased as he held up a picture of a badly drawn blue giraffe.

She chuckled softly, "Shut up, puppy."

They walked past the living room. His body was no longer there, nor was the blood. The house had clearly been cleaned after Stefan's little massacre.

Pictures were facing the ground, all placed face-down on tables. Her father clearly hadn't wanted to see her. Her hand came up to one before setting it back in its place.

It was her and Kai. She couldn't have been over two and Kai was at least eight-teen. The boy was holding her in the air, swinging her little body around as they both giggled.

She smiled slightly as she opened the frame and pulled the picture out before putting it in her pocket.

Her eyes cast over to a door. The door was worn down, the paint came off in large tears. It was the door to the basement.

She stood in front of it, her hand inches away from the door nob. She was practically shaking.

Klaus glanced up from the photo he was looking at before speeding over to her, "Love? Hey, take a deep breath. There you go. Now breathe out... breathe in... breathe out."

Her eyes were filled with tears as she looked up at him.

"Do you want to leave?" he asked softly as his hands moved up and down her arms in a comforting manner.

She shook her head, "I– I need some closure."

He slowly nodded, taking a hold of her free hand before following her down the stairs.

The basement was practically empty. There was a workbench and a few tools lying around but other than that, it was empty.

Her eyes moved over to a steel door with a broken lock. The same lock Stefan had broken to get her out.

She slowly walked towards it before pushing the door open. The room was dark but her eyes quickly adjusted.

There was dried blood lining the walls and the floor. Her blood. There was a singular blanket in a corner, that used to be her bed. And there were scraps of blood-covered clothing laying around from when she would attempt to heal her wounds.

Near her makeshift bed, there was a singular vent. She remembered sitting by it for hours on end when her father would turn off the power. With the power off, she would get limited air, only the small amount that drifted through the steel plates.

She sighed as her finger traced along the metal before she stood up and glanced at Klaus. There were tears in his eyes as he stared at the blood-covered walls.

She sent him a reassuring smile as she grabbed his hand before learning him out. "I'm done," she whispered.

As soon as they exited the house, he pulled her into the tightest hug he could muster. "I'm so sorry, love."

Prison World

Kai and Bonnie were sitting in the Gemini coven home as they ate their makeshift Thanksgiving dinner.

The house was, of course, covered in the blood of his siblings still which completely took away the witch's appetite.

"This smells great," Kai spoke as he dug into his food. "Not exactly a turkey dinner but it's what my family had in the fridge on May 10th, 1994."

Bonnie glanced down at the table before picking up his pager.

"Don't touch that."

Bonnie snickered, "Your pager? Why?"

Kai snatched it from her hands, "Because it's brand new, it looks cool, Margot picked out the stickers on it and I don't want you to bust it."

"Listen, Kai, my magic is gone. Which means we will be stuck here forever. Why don't we just divide the world in half, and go our separate ways?"

"I get it. I knocked you out and kidnaped you against your will. Can't you see I'm trying to apologize?"

"I will never trust you. Or like you, or enjoy your company for so much as one second, so quit just trying. Just let me leave here unharmed."

"Fine. But I want to show you something before you go."

Bonnie frowned but nodded. If it meant she could be alone, she would do it.

So, the witch followed the Gemini siphoner out into the forest until they reached a small home in another clearing.

"Where are we?" she asked.

"This is the Orion family home. A.K.A Margot's childhood home."

"What are we doing here?" she asked as they walked inside.

Beer bottles lined every surface, either empty or half full. All of the pictures were turned down, some with broken glass.

"See, I wasn't always a sociopath, Bonnie," he spoke as he held up a picture of him with Margot sitting on his shoulders.

"Cute. Not working."

Kai sighed, "I figured it wouldn't. But, that wasn't what I wanted to show you. You see, I'm not sure how much Margot has told you about our childhood, so, I figure I'll just show you," he spoke as he led her down to the basement.

"You're going to kill me, aren't you?" Bonnie spoke as they walked up to a steel door that was locked.

Kai grasped onto a pair of bolt cutters before cutting off the lock. "See, my little Margot was kept in here because she was a siphoner, like myself," he started as he opened the door, revealing a room full of blood that had yet to dry.

"Is this... her blood?" Bonnie asked quietly as she walked inside the room, her eyes full of shock.

"Mhm. Her father hated her, much like my father did me. He would come in here every day, beat her for hours on end before turning off the power which limited her source of air. That's why she has asthma, she spent hours with practically no air."

He pulled up the small blanket to reveal a little stuffed dinosaur. He remembered getting it for her one time they went to an arcade. "She, uh, she snuck this little guy in here the first time he brought her."

"How old was she?"

"Five. She was five," Kai told her solemnly.

"See, our families are monsters, Bonnie. This is what they do to us. They tortured Margot, they abused me. They are bad people, Bonnie."

The witch glanced down at the blood-covered stuffy in Kai's hand before sighing, "Okay. But, only if you promise not to hurt anyone else."

— — —

"Jo lived here," Klaus and Margot heard Alaric say as they walked back to the Gemini house. The history teacher was showing the brothers pictures he had taken from inside the home. "There's a drawer inside full of stuff. Newspaper articles about Jo's medical clamp, pictures of her as a kid, pictures of her as a teenager-"

Damon glanced down at a photo. "Hold please," he spoke as he grabbed onto it, "Rewind. That's Kai from planet 1994."

Stefan frowned, "Wait, Jo is his sister?"

"You guys didn't put that together already?" Margot asked as she took the picture from Damon, smiling slightly at the sight of Kai. "Even I did and I haven't even seen this Jo woman... not since I tried to torture her. That was five years ago though."

Stefan rolled his eyes playfully, "Shut up, kiddo."

"I didn't know I had guests," a man spoke from behind them.

Margot held back a sigh as she turned to face him. He looked the same as he did five years ago. Albeit, he looked even uglier with age.

She sent him a big smile, "Joshua. Lovely to see you... How're the kids?"

"Ellie," he spoke as he held back a recoil, "As you know, the kids are dead."

"Not like they didn't deserve it... Kinda wish he went after you first though, old man. Would've made life so much sweeter."

Damon glanced at her, "You know him?"

"I tried to kill him."

"And you failed," Joshua pointed out with a smirk.

"No. No, that's what you think. The only reason why I didn't kill you was because I knew Kai wanted to kill you himself. Now that I've talked to him though... I don't think he'd mind."

Before she could summon the blue mist, Damon stopped her, "We need answers."

Margot rolled her eyes, "Fine. Don't touch him though. Witches and their spells..."

Not listening to her, Damon went over to shake the man's hand. Instantly, he and Joshua went invisible earning a scoff from Margot, "No one listens. I'm surrounded by morons."

Klaus chuckled as he led her back to the car before setting her up on the hood. "I hope you aren't calling me a moron, love."

"It depends," she teased as she took his lips on her own.

"What about Damon?" he asked against her lips.

"He'll be fine. Joshua won't kill him... only maim him. If anything, you should be worried about my dad who happens to be standing ten feet away from us."

The hybrid quickly pulled away, vamp speeding away from her before leaning against a tree and crossing his arms, "Stefan! What a coincidence!"

Stefan scoffed as he rubbed his forehead, "Oh my god. You're engaged to my daughter, Klaus. And you got her pregnant, you're allowed to kiss her."

"I am?"

"He is?"

Stefan chuckled, "You know Maggie, sometimes I think you are the smartest person on the planet and other times I think you are the stupidest."

"Aye!... Yeah, that makes sense."

The two Salvatores glanced over at Klaus. They could smell his blood. "Nik? You alright, puppy?" Margot asked as she hopped off the hood with the help of Stefan.

The hybrid grunted slightly, "Yeah, I'm good, love. I, uh... I sped over here a little too fast and the tree impaled me."

Stefan almost doubled over in laughter while Margot smiled. "You're such an idiot," she teased as she helped pull him off the tree.

He smiled down at her, "But I'm your idiot."

She sent him a small smile before pressing her lips against his for a quick kiss, "That's right, puppy."

Stefan smiled at the pair. His daughter really was happy. After everything she had been through, she was finally happy.

He was more than proud of her.

"Margot!" they heard Alaric yell. "Margot! Help!"

The heretic sighed before walking out to the clearing, Klaus and Stefan following her. "What's wrong?"

"Joshua is trying to kill Jo!"

"Jo as in the bitchy twin sister? Good riddance."

"Please, Margot. I love her!"

Margot sucked her teeth before sighing, "Fine." With that, she walked over to the Gemini home before siphoning the barrier spell.

"I'd look away if you're squeamish," she told him before grabbing Joshua with her blue mist. She grinned as she threw him across the field, the act immediately stopping the spell.

"No!" the man yelled as he stood back up.

Margot walked over to him as she played with the blue mist. "Killing your kid. That's fucked up, Joshua," she scoffed.

The vampires could hear as the man's blood began to boil. It made an awful sizzling noise. "Feel that? I'm cooking you from the inside out."

His screams filled her ears. It sounded like heaven.

"Are you going to answer my friends' questions now?" she asked.

"N-No!" Through his screams, he muttered quietly, "Invisique."

Margot scoffed as the man turned invisible. "Dick."

She glanced back at the four men behind her who all stared at her with shocked expressions. "What?"

Klaus smirked, "Well, I can't answer for them, but I must say, that was hot, love."

She grinned as she tilted her head, "I try. Well, this was a dead end. Let's go home. Can we get food on the way? I'm starving."

— — —

Damon rolled his eyes as they walked back to their rented car, "Alright, so let's just get this straight. We went to the airport, we took all our clothes off for security just so I can come out here, have my brain scrambled by Papa Kai, who, by the way, can disappear into thin air, poof! Only to find Jo's rust knife full of magic."

"And we learn that the ascendant, i.e., the only reason we flew our asses out here in the first place, is actually with Jo at Whitmore five minutes from where we started. Great," Stefan spoke.

Alaric sighed, "Jo said that she kept it with her to ensure that Kai would never be released."

"Genius. Great. Then we go home. Shotgun, come on."

Alaric stopped them before they could get in the car, "Guys– hey wait. We can't do this, alright? We need to find another way, one that doesn't end up with my girlfriend dead."

"Girlfriend? You've been on like three dates."

Stefan sighed, "Nice, Damon."

"What? I'm just saying. He barely knows her. Her literal evil twin is over there with Bonnie right now."

Margot sighed, "He's not evil."

Alaric, ignoring her, spoke once again, "I will do what I can to help, but we're not letting her brother out."

The heretic glanced at Klaus. This was going to be a problem.

She would get Kai out, even if she had to kill the stupid history teacher and his bitch of a girlfriend.

Damon glanced at Margot before walking over to Alaric and grabbing onto his shoulders, "Ok. Get the ascendant from Jo. Do whatever you gotta do to get it. Do you understand?"

Compelled, Alaric answered, "I understand."

— — —

Stefan, with the convincing of Margot, had gone to find Caroline as soon as they got back to Whitmore.

Damon and Alaric left as well which left Klaus and Margot alone as they drove back to Mystic Falls.

"What are we doing tonight?" the pregnant woman asked as she stared out the window.

"Rebekah's cooking dinner... So, we'll probably order takeout and try to get Elijah drunk," the hybrid answered with a smile.

Margot chuckled, "You sound so sure... Is this a hidden tradition?"

He nodded, "Kol and I always try but it never happens."

She grinned, "Hundred bucks if I get him drunk."

"You're on, love."

— — —

Two hours later, Elijah was laying down on the floor playing with a stuffed dolphin, surrounded by shot glasses.

Margot grinned from her spot on the couch as she held her hand out to Nik, "Pay up, puppy."

The hybrid rolled his eyes playfully before handing her his billfold. Her eyes widened slightly, "The deal was a hundred, Nik... Not whatever this is."

He shrugged as he threw yet another piece of popcorn at Elijah causing the vampire to twitch and babble. "You deserve it. Besides, you and my sister are going baby shopping tomorrow."

Kol and Rebekah walked back inside the room, Kol immediately sitting beside Margot before laying his head on her lap while Rebekah sat on the floor beside Elijah who was muttering about the dolphin.

Since Margot had gotten back, Kol had stuck close by her side. He was incredibly protective over the pregnant woman, almost more than Klaus.

She was like another sister to him. And he liked to hear the twin's soft heartbeats. It was calming.

Klaus, of course, was a little jealous but it kept Kol from going on killing sprees so he allowed it.

Suddenly, Elijah stood up before smacking Klaus in the face with the stuffed dolphin.

They were all silent for a moment as they watched Elijah drunkenly begin to dance with the dolphin.

"I think you got him a little too drunk, love," Klaus spoke up, his hand on his cheek from where the dolphin hit him.

"... Maybe I shouldn't have told him he was drinking for three."

Rebekah smirked as she watched her brother trip over his feet before falling onto the floor, still hugging the dolphin, "Oh no, this is the best entertainment I've had in centuries... I do hope you still have those security cameras, Nik. This is wonderful blackmail."
