francis and bela caligari were both supposed to die when they were born. their mother didn't want children and when she gave birth to bela, she wanted him to be left in the woods for the wolves but her husband stopped it and began to take care of bela. after promising his wife that they wouldn't have another child, francis soon came along. being the result of a drunken stupor, her mother wanted to get rid of her herself but again, her husband saved the child. francis and bela grew up close, being three years apart. bela protected his sister from their mother with the help of their father before he soon passed from what was a fever — but bela knew that their mother had poisoned him. by 1838, bela was 26 and francis was 23 — the two lived with their ill mother in germany in a small town of wisborg. the two children just wanted to go out to the mountains and live without her, but money was scarce and francis had met someone — a priest. bela was happy for his sister but when he found her, calling out to someone and having these episodes at late hours, he knew something was wrong. something sinister was becoming attached to her, and he needed to do something about it.
