Chapter 31 - Good luck
Me and the other boys were running trough the maze, Minho and Thomas were in the front so they could lead the way.
My side hurt, but it was doable. Newt stayed close to me and he didn't let go of my hand.
After a while I saw the big red seven on the wall, and I knew we were close to the cliff. I squeezed Newt's hand and kept running.
Right before entering the cliff, Thomas stopped running. He moved his head to take a look at the cliff before entering.
'Is there a Griever?' Chuck asked a little scared.
'Yeah.' Thomas sighed and turned his head again.
'Shit.' A few boys mumbled.
'Take this, Chuck.' Minho handed Chuck the key. 'Stay behind us.'
'It's okay.' Teresa tied her hair up. 'Just stay with me.'
'We stay close. We stick together and we get trough this. We get out now, or we die trying.' Thomas said. 'Anyone wanna add something?'
'Be careful,' Minho started.
'Don't die.' I added.
Minho gave me a quick smile.
I felt Newt grab my hand again and he looked at me. 'You stay with Chuck and Teresa, okay?'
'But-.'
'No. Just stay with them, alright?'
'Fine.' I looked down.
'Raven.' Newt said and he got closer to me.
'Yeah?' I looked up again and his eyes met mine.
'Please be careful.' He said with a serious tone.
'Okay.' I said quietly and leaned in to hug him. 'I love you.' I whispered in his ear.
'I love you too.' Newt let go of me and kissed me.
'You guys done?' Minho had crossed his arms over each other.
'Yeah, yeah.' I gave him a glance.
'Good luck, Shortie.' Minho said before we entered the cliff.
'You too.' I gave him one last look and then the boys started running in.
Me, Teresa and Chuck followed.
All the boys ran towards the Grievers and attacked it with their poles. The Griever started fighting back and he threw a few boys of the cliff.
I focused on Newt and I held on to my dagger tighter, in case the Griever would do something to him.
Suddenly the Griever got closer to us and almost grabbed another boy, but Teresa hit it's leg. The Griever stumbled back, but it had hit Chuck what made the key fall.
Chuck quickly rushed over to it, but the key was already close to falling of the cliff. Chuck bend down and hung over the cliff.
Chuck was screaming now, another Griever was climbing towards him. I rushed over to him and grabbed his leg before he would fall. I pulled him back up and he had the key in his hand.
'Thanks.' He said.
When we turned around all of the boys were pushing the Griever off the cliff and they succeeded, but then two other Grievers climbed on top of the cliff.
Teresa motioned for us to follow her once she saw another Griever. The three of us started running towards the door and the boys attacked the two Grievers.
In front of us was a big stone door. Teresa and Chuck looked confused, but I grabbed the key and held it closer to the door. The light on the key turned green and the door started to go up.
Me, Chuck and Teresa ran towards the black hole while the others tried to fight the Grievers.
Suddenly the scanner came again and on the black hole appeared a red screen.
'Thomas!' Teresa took a few steps back towards the boys. 'It's a code! Eight numbers.'
'Eight sections to the maze.' Thomas mumbled. 'Hey, Minho!' He shouted while pushing a Griever. 'What's the sequence?'
'What?' Minho shouted.
'The sections in the maze! What's the sequence?'
'Seven! One! Uuh, five! Two!' Minho said while Teresa typed it in on the screen. Suddenly a Griever jumped down from the wall right on top of Minho.
'Minho!' Thomas shouted and he rushed over trying to save him.
Suddenly Jeff ran towards the Griever stabbed it right into it's head. Minho managed to crawl away from the Griever, but Jeff's pole was stuck in the Griever's head and Jeff didn't let go.
'Jeff!' Winston screamed at him, but it was too late. All the Grievers had took him.
'Minho the sequence, come on!' Chuck shouted.
'Uuh six! Four! Eight! Three! You got it?' Minho shouted while fighting.
The light turned green and the words complete appeared.
More doors started to close and they crushed the Grievers. One of them almost got to us, but Thomas threw his spear at it and the Griever backed up, right under the door.
Suddenly something opened and I fell.
~
After a while my eyes got used to the dark and I got up, walking forwards to a door. I opened it and light got in the room.
When I could finally see something more I turned around and looked for Newt. When I noticed him I ran towards him and hugged him. He hugged me back.
'You made it.' He whispered.
'So did you.' I smiled.
I let go of him and turned around. Thomas started walking out of the dark room and we followed him.
We were in a long hallway and suddenly lots of lights went on.
We followed Thomas until we arrived at a green door with a light on it. 'Exit' was on top of it.
'Seriously?' Frypan said.
Did we literally just escape a whole maze and then the way out is trough a shucking door?!
Thomas slowly walked to the door and moved his hand to the handle. He waited a few seconds, but eventually opened it.
We walked into another hallway, but suddenly we saw bodies laying on the floor. Lights flickered and blood was on the walls.
Thomas walked in and we followed. When I was in the room I looked to the right. I started walking to a window and looked trough it. There were two bodies on beds covered with a white sheet.
Minho and Newt stood next to me.
Alby and Ben.
'Come on.' I whispered to the boys and I grabbed Newt's hand to pull him away from Alby and Ben.
We were in a room full of electronics. I walked around and looked at the screens. On the screen I saw the Glade.
Where they watching us? Of course they were.
I looked at some other screens and saw some kind of profiles, with a picture of some Gladers.
Suddenly I heard something behind me so I turned around. There was a screen with a woman on it. The woman of my memories.
'Hello, my name is Dr. Ava Paige.' She said.
'I'm Director of Operations at the World Catastrophe Killzone Department.'
W.c.k.d
'If you're watching this, that means you've successfully completed the Maze Trials. I wish I could be there in person to congratulate you, but circumstances seem to have prevented it.'
I looked around at the dead bodies.
'I'm sure by now, you must all be very confused. Angry. Frightened. I can only assure you that everything that has happened to you, everything we've done to you was all done for a reason.'
I gave Newt a quick glance before turning back at the screen again.
'You won't remember, but the sun has scorched our world. Billions of lives lost to fire, famine, suffering on a global scale. The fallout was unimaginable. What came after was worse. We call it the Flare.'
Suddenly horrible pictures appeared on the screen. A man, all his veins were black and he was screaming.
'A deadly virus that attacks the brain. It is violent, unpredictable, incurable. Or so we thought. In time, a new generation emerged that could survive the virus. Suddenly, there was a reason to hope for a cure. But, finally, we're not being easy. The young would have to be tested. Sacrificed inside harsh environments where their brain activity could be studied. All in an effort to discover what makes them different.
What makes YOU different.'
'You may not realize it, but you're very important. Unfortunately, your Trials have only just begun.'
Seriously? We just got out.
'As you will no doubt soon discover, not everyone agrees with our methods. Progress is slow. People are scared. It may be too late for us. For me.'
Suddenly the woman grabbed a gun.
'But not for you. The outside world awaits.'
She held the gun against her head.
'Remember... WCKD is good.'
And then she shot her self. I closed my eyes at the sound of it.
Thomas turned around and took a few steps towards a body. I couldn't see the face, but I knew it was Ava Paige.
Suddenly I heard a loud sound and I turned around. A door opened towards a hallway, and at the end of it was daylight.
'Is it over?' Chuck asked a little afraid.
'She said we were important.' Newt said. 'What are we supposed to do now?'
'I don't know.' Thomas said. 'Let's get out of here.' He started moving towards the open door.
'No.' We all turned around at the sudden voice.
'Gally?' Thomas said once we realized who had said it. He wanted to walk towards him, but Teresa stopped him.
'Don't.' She held a hand in front of Thomas. 'He's been stung.'
Gally dropped the key and I saw that he was holding a gun. Newt moved in front of me a little more once he noticed it too.
'We can't leave.' Gally said. His eyes were black and dirt was all over his face.
'We did. Gally, we're out.' Thomas said. 'We're free.'
'Free?' Gally started sobbing. 'You think we're free out there? No. There's no escape to this place.' Gally started moving the gun up, pointing it towards our group.
'Gally, listen to me.' Thomas held his hands in front of him. 'You're not thinking straight. Now we can help you. Just put down the gun.'
'I belong to the maze.' Gally said with a shaky voice.
'Just put down the gun.' Thomas tried again.
'We all do.'
'Gally!' Everyone started shouting and Minho thew his spear. It landed right into Gally's chest. Gally started gasping for air and he fell on his knees.
'Thomas...' I heard Chuck say beside me.
I turned my head and saw a red stain in Chuck's chest turning bigger and bigger.
'Chuck!' I grabbed him as he fell onto the ground. Thomas bend down on the other side of Chuck.
'Oh shit, shit.' I mumbled.
'Look at me, look at me!' Thomas grabbed Chuck his face. 'Oh, shit.' Thomas whimpered.
'Chuck look at me, all right?'
'I got you buddy, just hang on.' I felt tears form in my eyes as I held Chuck.
'It's okay.' Chuck said with a quiet voice. 'Thomas.' He grabbed Thomas' arm.
I saw that Chuck's wooden figure that he made in the Glade was in his hands.
'No, no Chuck, you're gonna give it to them yourself.' Thomas said. 'Remember, I told you that.'
'Take it.' Chuck said.
'No.' Thomas mumbled as he let out a sob and grabbed the figure.
'Thank you.' Chuck whispered and turned his head to me. 'Thank you, Raven.'
'No Chuck, you're gonna get-.' I wanted to say but Chuck started to groan a little. Then he exhaled.
'Chuck?' I whispered trough my tears. Chuck's chest had stopped moving. 'Chuck!' I felt tears stream down my face and my vision blurred because of the amount.
'God, damn it!' Thomas screamed.
Not Chuck.
'We made it, come on!' I shouted trough my sobs.
'I'm sorry.' Thomas whispered towards Chuck. 'God damn it!' He screamed again.
I moved my hands to cover my eyes and continued crying. Thomas continued screaming trough his own sobs.
'Raven.' I heard someone say, but I didn't listen.
Not Chuck. Not him.
Someone grabbed my arm and I tried to pull away, but the person was strong. I opened my eyes and saw that a man with a black mask was holding me.
'Let go of me!' I screamed as more tears started to form. The man only grabbed me tighter and started dragging me trough the hallway.
