I hate doing this, but sometimes you have to go through with situations like this. I take in a deep breath and watch as the excitement is beaming from Alessia's face.
She loves seeing her Nanna, I just hate putting my mother in these situations. I always feel awful for making her babysit. But today, I have no choice.
I knock on the door and allow the noise to echo through, I hate waiting and making her look after Alessia. The guilt suddenly consumes me as soon as she opens the door to reveal her youthful skin. Her brown hair is tamed and her eyes are full of kindness. It's always been my mother and I in my eyes, my father shouldn't have been in the picture at all.
Alessia hugs my mother tightly, squeezing her with happiness and joy.
My mother bends to the floor to become the same height as Alessia. Her lips part as she lets out her sweet voice. "What would you like to do today Alessia?" She asks with a raised brow.
Alessia looks at her blankly as she attempts to plan the day. My mother and I chuckle at her lightly.
I get onto the floor and look at Alessia, I'm now level with her and see her beautiful face perfectly.
"Mummy's got some stuff to do today, okay? I won't be back late. But make sure you're a good girl for Nanna." I look at her and watch as her small arms wrap around my neck and pull me close. I inhale her scent and take in a deep breath to prepare myself for the day ahead without my favourite company.
"I love you mamma, I'll be good!" She exclaims and takes my mother's hand with joy.
"I love you too, I know you will." I smile and let Alessia run into the front room to gather up all of the toys my mother has collected for the past few years for her.
I get up and face my mother, her facial expression has now changed and is full with a forced smile. Her eyes have dropped and have no sparkle in them.
"Are you okay?" I question my mother and wait for her reply.
"Just, your work. They're not easy on you at all Luna." Her voice breaks mid-sentance which only allows the guilt to consume me more, I would've happily seen my mother today. But not in circumstances like this. We could've been watching films all day, filling our faces with all of the junk we could find. But no, I have to attend work for some bizarre reason. Why I Allowed Jay to pull me in I don't know. But what I do know is that I need money for Alessia and I.
My mother and I talk for a little longer before I give her a hug goodbye and shout out to Alessa.
I got into the car and allowed the sadness to consume me. Whatever Jay has to say. It better be damn important.
I'm driving and I can already feel the blood boiling within my veins, I don't know what he has planned but if its anything major and would take up time that I'd rather spend with Alessia, he can get someone else to do the job.

I pull up in the car park and line my car in between the bright white lines that are painted onto the dark floor. The amount of people who don't follow these lines is actually comical, especially outside of a police station.
I lock up the car and take in a deep breath before I open the double doors. I instantly see people running back and forth with their uniforms on and radios in their hands.
"Good morning Luna, thought you were spending the first few weeks of the break with your daughter?" She chuckles, I glance over at where she is standing and watch how she puts her hands on her hips.
"Stella." I announce and I instantly roll my eyes. She's always irritated me, ever since we've worked together.
"Anyway, he's probably expecting you, so he's in his office." She announces and walks past, pushing my shoulder in the process.
I open up Jay's door and notice the black phone in his hands, the lead is almost catching onto his leg with his feet on the desk.
"Wait." He announces and puts up one of his fingers. I sigh and take a seat opposite as he chuckles along to whoever he is on the phone with.
"Alright, bye now." He comes off the phone with a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth, it's large and overpowering for sure.
"Luna!" He exclaims and puts his feet back onto the floor where they belong and stare at me deeply as he leans in to begin the conversation with me.
"What's wrong, Jay?" I question slowly, I'm beginning to regret my choice to come here today, but like I say. Anything for a bit more money for Alessia and I.
"Well, there is a mission that I need you to take." He begins. I sigh and look to the floor.
"A mission?" I question his first statement but his anger soon boils.
"Let me finish."
I sit back in the chair and allow him to continue, a smile forms back onto his face. "As I was saying." He begins. "There is a mission, it's an important one. You need to attend this mission." I raise my brow with curiosity and suddenly find my body slouching in my chair.
"Have you heard of the Russo brothers?" He raises his brow as he asks me the question, I slightly shake my head. The names done ring a bell.
"Well I want you to go undercover." He adds and I almost choke on my saliva. I feel it running down my throat and blocking my airways from breathing properly. I cough to remove the barrier and catch my breath before speaking up.
"What?" I redeem myself and ask the dreadful question.
"What do you mean 'what'?" He mocks me and stands up with his hands on the table for support.
"I've given you an order, Officer Gomez, you either take the offer or find your way to the doors and leave your badge here on the way out." I look at him and feel disgusted.
"Do you have any idea what time of the year it is?" I question in a disappointed way.
"Yeah, it's August." He smiles. The anger boils and I find myself digging moon crescents into the palms of my hands with my nails.
"I think you're forgetting Luna. You're the person who I've asked for. You're doing this mission. And if you choose not to do it, you'll find yourself having a lower salary... Lower chances within this station along with lower sets of respect." He coughs, "You have a child, don't you?" He sniggers and has a smile on his face.
"We wouldn't want them to live on the streets with you now, do we?" He rasies his bushy brow at me and I can see how much he's enjoying this... The satisfaction he's gaining from this. He's disgusting.
The thought of Alessia living on the streets scares me, I can't put her in that kind of situation. As much as I want to spend the first weeks of her break with her... I can't at the moment.
"Fine... What do I need to do?" I sigh in defeat and watch as his hands clap together with glee.
"I need you to go undercover in the business down the road. 'Russo and sons." He adds and I turn to the door which is stood there, closed.
"Why?" I question the only word that is roaming in my mind. My attention is pushed back onto Jay and to why he's only asking me, demanding me to do his dirty work.
"Why don't you get one of your male officers to do it?" I ask honestly.
"Because I need you, I called you so you're doing it." He smiles.
"So... This business... 'Russo and sons'?" I question, eager to know more about my position and what I'd be doing. A smile enlarges on his face. The face of victory and power. I couldn't turn down this mission. I had no choice. Our boss can be very manipulative, especially when it comes to our families.
"Well, they're looking for a new assistant. You'll have to give regular updates but we need enough evidence to get them arrested and taken away. For good." He adds I am still eager to know more so he continues making this sound so easy.
"Well... There are rumours that the sons are the mafia leaders, we need evidence to prove that and get them arrested." He re-words his sentence and finally admits I'm like bait for the sharks.
"I'm like bait then." I add and feel like rolling my eyes, but contain myself and manage not to.
"Not at all! You'll get a pay rise of course, this is a dangerous job..."
"βYeah I could die." I finish his sentence, if my mother ever found out about this, she'd be fuming with me, she'd probably attempt to block me out of her life.
"That's not the point, we need to save lives Luna." He adds sternly, I nod and I know what I have to do.

Awhile has passed and we have ran through everything that is needed to take place, using my original name won't be a problem as they won't even know me... Right?
As if Jay read my mind he answers my question. "You'll change your surname, any requests?" He raises his brow and asks me, I shake my head and he let's out a small chuckle.
"Typical woman... Indecisive." He rolls his eyes and opens his draw wide, he pulled out a small phone and handed it to me along with a piece of paper with writing on it.
"This is the number you'll need to use to contact me for any information that you have." I nod and take another look at the piece of paper.
"Driver?" I repeat as I look on the paper, revealing my new undercover surname.
"Yes, you'll be Luna Driver, don't get it wrong." I feel the need to roll my eyes once again but just ignore his comment, I get up from the chair and begin to touch the door knob until Jay's voice pulls me back.
"You start Wednesday, that's when your interview is... Three o'clock in the afternoon, don't be late!" He comments and I agree finally leaving the office in one piece.
I take in a deep breath as soon as I exit out of the horrendous place, I find myself breathing in the fresh air as fast as I possibly can before asking more favours from my mother. I roll my eyes and tilt the back of my head against the brick wall.
"So you took the mission then?" Stella begins to chuckle with her evil eyes, she's always been annoying and I've never got along with her. Not even Maya does and she gives chances to everyone. But in her words she can 'spot a bad egg a mile away'.
"That isn't any of your concern." I state the obvious. I suddenly feel the sickening smoke run up my nostrils the closer Stella got with her cigarette breath. Unprofessional if you ask me.
"Just try not to get yourself killed." She chuckles and walks back into the station to leave me and my anxious mind outside alone.
