Chapter Five

~

The next morning I awoke before Lucy and Susan. Deciding to get some reading in I headed off for the library, which I had seen earlier.

I got dressed in a white button up shirt, paired with a red skirt. I kept my hair down.

After some time of reading I rose from the comfy arm chair and decided to go find the siblings.

As I walked through the hall I thought about the argument me and Edmund had gotten into last night. I had finally began to understand him. Understand his rudeness. Then he had to go and insult me.

My thoughts however, were soon cut off by the sound of breaking glass and the sight of a ball headed straight towards my face.

Somehow my hand shot up and caught the ball before it hit me. But there was no saving the now broken stained glass.

I studied the ball impatiently waiting for the culprits to arrive so I could tease whoever hit it about their lack of skill.

Luckily I didn't have to wait long. "Oh way to go Edmund."

"Why do I feel like you aimed at me on purpose?" I asked alerting their gaze to me.

    "Maybe I did!" Edmund shot.

    "Edmund!" Susan scolded.

But before our argument could continue the sound of Macready yelling echoed off the halls.

"Oh no, the Macready!" Peter gasped.

"Hide!" Susan exclaimed. I dropped the ball and ran after the siblings.

Not exactly knowing where we were going we tried opening doors, half of them being locked.

We grew more and more stressed as we heard Macreadies foot steps not far behind us.

"Quick, in here!" Lucy called opening the door to the spare room. Before us stood the wardrobe, only this time, it gave off a magical feeling.

"Oh you've got to be joking," Susan sighed.

Wasting no time Peter shoved us all into the wardrobe, one after the other. Surprisingly we all fit. This must be a big wardrobe.

I began to grow hot as the fluffy coats surrounded me, it felt as if we had been walking backwards for an eternity.

"Ouch that was my foot!" Someone cursed.

    "Move over!" Another voice said.

"No you- ouch!" One by one we all stumbled over and into a soft wet mound of... snow?

I slowly looked up shocked to see trees surrounding me. Snow fell from the sky and covered the trees. There really was a wood!

    "Impossible," Susan breathed.

"Don't worry, I'm sure its just your imagination." Lucy smiled crossing her arms.

"I don't suppose sorry would begin to cover it?" Peter asked.

Lucy hummed, "No, but this might!" She flung a snowball at him.

I let out a laugh and tossed one at Susan who returned the favor.

It felt like a dream, being here, in this strange land inside of the wardrobe. It was amazing! I never wanted to leave.

I giggled in happiness and flung a snowball at Edmund. When it hit him square in the face he let out a groan.

    "Ow!"

Peter, as if remembering he was there turned to him accusingly. "You little liar!"

"You didn't believe her either!" Edmund argued. I couldn't help but feel slightly bad for him.

"Apologize to Lucy." Peter demanded. When Edmund failed to speak Peter stepped closer, "Say you're sorry."

"Ok, ok, I'm sorry!" Edmund exclaimed in annoyance.

"Maybe we should go back," Susan spoke staring at the street lamp before them.

I was hit with deja vu, this was exactly like my grandmas story! The dark cold winter, the street lamp, I even bet the wardrobe we had come through was the one through the story!

But how could she have known all this? Unless... they weren't made up stories. Maybe my grandmother had been to this place. Maybe she was the one in the story! Mary.

"Shouldn't we at least take a look around?" Edmund asked.

"I think... Lucy should decide!" Peter announced turning to the younger girl who beamed in delight.

"I want you all to meet Mr. Tumnus!" Lucy exclaimed.

"The kidnapper?" I snorted under my breath, no one had heard me.

"Then Mr. Tumnus it is." Peter smiled.

"But we can't go out in the snow dressed like this." Susan stated making a fair point. We were already beginning to shiver.

"Well I'm sure the Professor wouldn't mind us borrowing a few coats." Peter said bringing out five warm coats. He handed me a long black trench with a soft interior.

"This is a girls coat." Edmund frowned holding his like it was a rotten banana. It was fluffy and grey, Peter had definitely done it on purpose.

"I know." Peter said walking off. I couldn't help but snicker at Edmunds annoyed face, he shot me a glare and pushed past me in annoyance.

Ahead of us Lucy and Susan were laughing as they ran through the snow. Peter quickly joined in with them.

Lucy let out a squeal of joy as Peter tumbled down a hill. I laughed and ran over to join them in the snow.

It was cold but the warmth in my chest blocked it out. I laid on my back and stared at the blue sky. Was it the same sky back home? Or was it completely different?

"What are you doing Charlie?" Lucy asked me snapping me out of my thoughts.

"Making a snow angel," I grinned moving my arms and legs. The girl giggled and joined me on the ground. We both stood and admired our work. However before I could get a good look at it Edmund stepped on it.

"Hey!" I frowned in annoyance as he destroyed my work.

    "Oops," He smirked.

"Oh sod off," I rolled my eyes and moved past him.

Me and Lucy continued along together, "Sorry about Edmund. I mean normally he's rude, but it feels like around you he's 10 times worse." Lucy explained.

"I feel honored." I stated sarcastically.

"Can I ask you something?" Lucy asked.

    "Shoot,"

"How did your bed time story line up exactly with all of this?" Lucy asked motioning to the land around them.

I thought for a minute. "To be honest I don't even know. The story I told you was passed down from my grandmother, but I don't know where she heard it from. Or maybe she made it up, the point is she knew about this place, about Narnia, she told me. She wanted me to know."

"Guys?" Our conversation was cut short by Peter calling out.

We turned to see him and Susan staring at a door left open. I assumed it was the fauns place, but on such a cold day why would he leave the door open?

    Unless...

Lucy made a mad dash to the door ignoring the calls her siblings sent her.

I shared a worried look with Peter and followed the younger girl inside the den.

Just as I suspected the inside was trashed. Furniture was thrown about, silverware and glass plates were smashed all throughout the room.

It would have been cozy had it been clean, but the dark ominous room was anything but.

"What happened here?" I breathed looking around in shock.

"Who would do something like this?" Lucy asked tears on her face.

Instead of answering Peter tore down a piece of paper hanging from the door. "The Faun Tumnus is hereby charged with High Treason against Her Imperial Majesty, Jadis, Queen of Narnia, for comforting her enemies and fraternizing with humans. Signed Maugrim, Captain of the Secret Police. Long Live the Queen."

We all let that sink in. "All right. Now we really should go back." Susan turned to us.

"But what about Mr. Tumnus?" Lucy asked desperately.

"If he was arrested just for being with a human, I don't think there's much we can do." Susan frowned.

"What do they have against humans?" I questioned as if anyone would have an answer.

"You don't understand, do you? I'm the human! She must have found out he helped me!" Lucy cried.

"Maybe we could call the police." Peter offered

"These are the police." Susan shook her head. Lucy began to nervously pace in front of the sign, silent tears falling down her cheeks.

"Don't worry, Lu. We'll think of something," Peter comforted the younger girl.

"Why?" Edmund finally spoke up. I stared at him curiously, "I mean, he's a criminal!"

I frowned at the boys words, if having a cup of tea with a human was considered a crime then we were technically all criminals.

"Why are you siding with them?" I questioned noticing Lucy's offended face.

However before Edmund could answer, there was a loud, "Psst!"

We all turned to where the noise came from, only to see a red bird sitting in a tree. "Did that bird just "psst" us?" Susan asked as we slowly advanced in on the animal.

I huddled close to the siblings, maybe whatever had taken the faun had returned for us. Suddenly I was wishing we had listened to Susan.

But instead of anything dangerous, a large beaver crawled out of the bushes. I let out a low laugh feeling relief, "Its just a beaver,"

Peter crouched down to be level with the animal before holding his hand out expectantly, "Here boy," He clicked his tongue, "Here boy,"

The beaver stared for a second before standing on its feet. "Well I ain't gonna smell it if thats what you want,"

    The beaver talked.

    A talking beaver.

I stared numbly at the creature, not flinching when the Pevensies cried out and jumped back.

    "Oh, sorry," Peter breathed.

I watched in shock as the beaver turned to Lucy, "Lucy Pevensie?"

"Yes?" Lucy questioned. For a moment I was worried the animal would attack, after all we didn't know him or what he could do, but after a minute he took out a white lacy handkerchief and passed it to the girl.

"Hey thats the hankie I gave to Mr. Tumnus," Lucy trailed off.

The beaver nodded, "He got it to me just before they took him."

"Is he alright?" Lucy asked worriedly.

The beaver looked around warily before facing the group, "Further in," He scurried off, heading for the tree line.

I was hesitant to follow a talking beaver, but apparently Peter wasn't. The blonde started off after the animal before being stopped by Susan. "What are you doing?" She questioned in exasperation.

"She's right how do we know we can trust him?" Edmund added.

Peter shrugged, "He said he knows the faun."

"He's a beaver, he shouldn't be saying anything at all!" Susan exclaimed.

"I agree, we should probably head back before something bad happens," I stated.

"Nobody asked what you think," Edmund glared, I returned it.

Why did he have to argue about everything?

    "Everything alright?" The beaver called.

"Yes, we were just talking," Peter called back.

The beaver, if possible, turned grave. "Thats better left for safer quarters."

Lucy looked around knowingly, "He means the trees."

Talking animals, fauns, and listening trees? And we had only just arrived, I only hoped it wouldn't grow worse.
