Chapter 53- Those Who Perished

It's been a few weeks since me and Jungkook reunited again after years of longing for each other.  I did my very best to take care of him to recover from his illness. I was beyond happy to be near him. Jungkook was becoming healthier day by day. And so was I. When I visited my therapist after a week she happily said that I was in good condition, which made Jimin eased.

We were making huge progress in our lives.

Jimin was back on his business work which made me relieved. He had to give up everything because he had to take care of me instead. I was happy to see him back in his tracks. He gladly accepted the affiliation of Kim Enterprise which was quite famous for new fashion cars. Which made him and Kim Seokjin business partners. It was a good step to start everything all over.

Jungkook and I were able to build up our lives on our own. We supported each other to recover from the past trauma. Jungkook himself was my best therapist of all.

I wanted to visit a special place for some time.

Jungkook was taking me there.

And there I was standing in front of the entrance of a most historical place, holding hands with Jungkook. I glanced over the fence to see the cement tombs that were standing against the ground with gloom. A soft sigh left me as I read the name.

Fair View Cemetery, Halifax

We were in Halifax, Canada. Jungkook and I traveled across the world to visit this place. The place where hundreds of dead souls became victims of the Titanic tragedy on 15th April 1912 laying down peacefully.

The silence of the dead ghosted the area. The humming of the wind carried the whispers of the dead who wailed for life that night. The rustling of the dry leaves echoed the agony consumed by the lonely souls. The only thing they were accompanied by were the dry flowers that were kept beside their graves.

The graves were starting to wreck just like their owners. The stones were carved with the names who died that day with the particular sentence that could be seen in every tomb.

Lost in the Titanic disaster
April 15, 1912

The wax drops that were staining the greyish tombs were like tears that were shed by those who perished that night in the cold Atlantic.  Without being able to say goodbye to their loved ones, they had to go. The chilly breeze extracted the loneliness even more.

The grief clouded me.

Jungkook's hand slid around me, trying to comfort me seeing my gloomy face that was hanging low. I glanced at him.

"It must be so lonely for them" I quietly said with a sigh.

Jungkook glanced at the tombs that were standing next to each other. He stepped towards them tracing his finger along the cold surface. His face held so many emotions.

"I still remember their cries for help, they called for help until the last moment," he said, clenching his jaw with agony.

"They kept calling but no one came" His voice was shattering to pieces.

"I couldn't save them" he kneeled near the tombs, hiding his face from his hands. His shoulders were shaking.

In a moment I realised that he was crying.

"Jungkook..." I kneeled near him, keeping my hand on his shoulder. He let out silent sobs.

He was twisting with the pain of burden. The sorrow that couldn't be detached away from him was eating him out.

I took him to my embrace, enfolding him between my arms. I felt the warmth of the tears as they rolled down his cheek. I rested my head on his. He snuggled into him trying his best to control the burning sorrow that he couldn't bury.

Seeing him crying was the most painful thing to witness.

"It's not your fault, it was never your fault" I tried to console him, stroking his head.

I let him cry, cry until he felt better. My hand caressed his back until he stopped sobbing.

"Jungkook, look at me" I turned his teary face towards me.

"You did your best, you saved them" he kept staring at me as I talked in a soft voice.

"I was your passenger and you gave your everything to protect me, you saved me Jungkook" I cupped his cheek.

"You gave away your everything to save them, even when your duty was withheld you didn't stop..." My fingers brushed his hair and bangs away from his face.

"Do you remember the promise I made you on the island that day?" Jungkook silently nodded, recollecting the memories.

"I promised you that I'd stay safe to reassure you that you are not a failure right?" he kept gazing at me. His sobs had stopped by then.

"I lived, Jungkook, I survived. I proved that you did save your passengers in every possible way" I pulled him into a hug, whispering to his ears.

"You were never a failure" I felt him hugging me back. We stayed like that until he felt better.

We walked through the stony tombs towards one certain area that built a bit separated from others. As I read the names while passing by, I realized that they were the heroic crew that went down with the Titanic. Each name that was carved on the stones, reminded me of their cheerful lively faces back then.

I stopped near the grave that was covered with dry flowers. It read the name 'Captain Edwards J Smith'. I kneeled and placed the fresh bouquet of white flowers I brought with me. Jungkook watched me pay respects to the captain.

I glanced at the gravestone. Captain Smith's joyful face smiled at me through my memories.  If he was here today with us, he would definitely say, 'You did well Miss Park'.

I let out a sigh.

"He wanted you to drop the burden you know," I said, standing up and walking towards Jungkook who was silent. I remembered Captain Smith's last words for me before he finally said goodbye.

"If this ship ever meets with tragedy,  make sure you live, and keep Jungkook alive. Never let him feel that it was his fault. Don't let him carry the burden do you understand me Y/n?"

"I understand you,"

"Captain Smith, he saved you so you could survive," I said with a softened gaze. Jungkook let out a sigh.

"His last orders were to keep alive," he said looking at the tomb that was outstanding among others.

"Captain said that he made the right choice by having a partnership with me."

We both stood silent for a while before talking again.

I took Jungkook's hand, intertwining his fingers with mine.

"I'm sure he's proud of you Jungkook, you never gave up on your passengers or your ship until the very end" I gave a light squeeze to his hand, comforting him.

"You think?"

"Of course, he always admired your talents Jungkook. He regretted that he couldn't strike against the White Star Line to save his ship like you did" Jungkook gazed at me.

"That day, the day they withheld your duty as a captain, he talked to me," I said, forming my lips into a thin line.

"What did he say?"

"I asked why he was siding with the Star Line and not you. I couldn't understand why he agreed to ban you" I continued talking after heaving a soft sigh.

"He told me that one day I'll understand why he did that" I turned to Jungkook.

"And well, now I know why" My gaze shifted to the stony tomb that was silently standing there.

"He did that to protect you, to subdue the burden by keeping you alive so his soul won't be trapped with that regret forever" Jungkook silently acknowledged me. He stared at the tomb for a long time before finally speaking up.

"You can rest in peace now captain," he said with a small smile.

"Goodbye Captain," Jungkook bowed at the grave, sparing one final glance at it.

Before we left, I glanced at the tomb that was lying beside Captain Smith's which read something that sent daggers to my heart.

'Loving memories of Captain Jeon Jungkook, April 15th, 1912
May your soul rest in peace in the North Atlantic'

Seeing his name carved on a tombstone made me feel heavy-hearted. It was covered with dry flowers just like Captain Smith's. Shivers sent down my spine seeing it.

It symbolized that for the world, Jungkook was dead.

Jungkook noticed that I was looking at his grave. He knew it was the call to leave when he saw my expression. His hand slid around my waist.

"Let's go love"

Jungkook and I farewelled the souls that rested in peace, leaving them to be as they were again.
