Chapter 50- Captain Smith's Last Will

Flashback continues~

15th April 1912 - 3.15 a.m

"Is anyone there? Can you hear us?"

"Can anybody hear us? Anyone alive here?"

"Hello! Can you hear us? Is anyone here?"

The body that was lying on the wooden surface was surprisingly breathing. He was still alive. He almost looked like a frozen corpse but no, he wasn't dead. His heart was still beating.

Jungkook winced his eyes and whimpered.

He couldn't move his numb body. His heavy eyelids slowly opened. He felt like he was drugged or something. The man couldn't control his own body. He tried to identify what was the source of the noise he was hearing on the dark cold night. It's been some time since the encouraging roars of the people vanished.

"Hello, is anyone there? " he heard from a distance.

"Am I already dead? Am I dreaming?" he wondered.

"Is anyone alive out there? Can anyone hear us?" the sound became louder, it was getting closer. The water splattered as the rows hit the water bed, moving the boat forward.

"Anyone here?" again the voice repeated.

Jungkook wide-opened his eyes, knowing that the sound was real. He wasn't dead, he felt the coldness that wrapped him. It wasn't a dream either. The voice was too real to be a dream. It was the voice of the reprieve.

"Don't hit them, check everyone if there are any survivors!" it was the familiar voice of the second officer in command, Charles Lightollar. His voice uproared, frantically searching for survivors.

Jungkook tried to lift his head. His neck muscles had gone numb, unable to move. His doe eyes were swollen, and his lips were turned dark purple because of the lack of blood circulation in his body. He felt like his body would break like a toothpick if he tried to move.

The light of a torch beamed. It was aimed at where Jungkook was staying. He noticed the rays of light that were beaming from the far.

You have to get up Jungkook, help has arrived...

He breathed heavily, trying to call the boats. But his voice was cracked, his hoarse voice was almost a whisper. He didn't have the energy remaining in his body to shout out loud.

It's now or never

Jungkook got up supporting his body weight from his hands. He continuously puffed clouds of smoky air into the atmosphere. The boats were getting closer and closer. He had to gain their attention somehow.

"I- I am...here..." his weak voice whispered.

It was barely heard by anyone. It was difficult for him to find his vocal cords to come to life again. The hoarseness of his voice cracked, making him cough. That cough came out like a god's blessing.

"Did you hear that man? Someone is out there!" Lightoller's voice filled with enthusiasm.  The boat started rowing in his direction.

A light of hope lit inside Jungkook. Looked like God didn't have planned to take him to death that night. The yearning to survive made Jungkook determined. Even though his body was weak, he was strong from the inside.

Jungkook tried to get up on his knees. The wooden table that held him started to wobble as he struggled to get up.

"Who's there? Can you hear us? Can you make some noise?" Lightoller kept searching without giving up.

He knew there was someone there who wasn't dead. Survivors remained in the North Atlantic,  he couldn't give up on them.

"I- I am...here...come...he- here..." Jungkook weakly tried to scream in his cracked voice.

"Co- Come...here..." He banged his fists on the wet wooden surface, making a dull sound echo in the air. He banged another time and the water clattered as the soothing water bed was disturbed.

It seemed to be the trick.

Jungkook landed his fists again, the second time harder than the last time. He continued to bang louder and louder.

"I'm...he- here..." He gritted his teeth trying to ignore the coldness.

"It's coming from there! Come on row!" Lightoller demanded the people,  leading the way to where Jungkook was.

The luminous of the lightened-up torch was getting closer. The beam aimed at Jungkook making his eyes wince as the intense light fell on him.

"There he is!" Lightoller cried in happiness seeing Jungkook, a survivor. They rowed the boat closer to him.

He breathed heavily, yet couldn't believe that whether it was true, was he being saved? He didn't have the energy to think about that. A weak smile crept on his exhausted face. As he tried to move, his body fell into the cold water with a loud splash.

"Hold on there, we are coming!"

Jungkook grabbed the wooden material and hung it. He watched the boat getting closer to him. He could feel the lower part of his body as they had all gone numb. But he was alive. The help was only a few inches away from him.

He survived the horrific tragedy.

"Come on, pull him onboard!" A strong pair of arms grasped him, pulling his given-up body out from the cold water. He breathed frantically, shuddering.

"Captain Jeon?" Lightoller's brows were raised with surprise as he recognized the person. His voice was coated with both happiness and astounding.

"Keep searching for more survivors!" he ordered the others, quickly approaching Jungkook who looked like a frozen statue.

"Captain...Captain, can you hear me?" He took Jungkook to his embrace, leaning Jungkook's head on his lap as a support. Jungkook nodded, closing his eyes with exhaustion.

"How darn happy I'm to see you captain" Lightoller's genuine words were filled with adherence to their leader. He was glad to see him alive. He was more than happy to see him.

Lightoller pulled a warm blanket, wrapping Jungkook's body with it. He was losing too much heat already.

"Don't worry captain, We will take you to land soon...please hang in there" Lightoller's eyes filled with agony as he saw how their young captain was suffering from terrible hypothermia.

Lightoller was one of the most loyal crew who worked. He devoted his life to them.  Jeon Jungkook and Edwards Smith were two that he would never give up on. He knew that Captain Smith perished with the Titanic. He remembered his last words to two of them, he and Murdoch before closing the door and locking himself in the well house*.

"You all did well, I am happy that I got to work with such a fine crew with so much dedication and devotion"

Murdoch's jaws clenched as he said, acknowledging that it was their final goodbye. He tried hard not to let the tears leave their sockets. Lightoller looked as worried as he was. His head was hung low with gloom.

Captain Smith placed his hands on each of their shoulders, comforting them with a light squeeze.

"Do your best until the very end"  he said with a painful smile.

Murdoch was on the verge of tears. He was reluctant to let his captain go. After the huge bluster that happened after withholding Captain Jeon's work, he felt like he lost his right hand.

And now Captain Smith was going to perish with the ship.

Leaving them all alone with themselves.

But both of them knew that it couldn't be helped. Lightoller heaved a deep sigh.

"Both of you should listen to me carefully..." Captain Smith lowered his voice so only they could hear.

"Make sure that Jeon makes it alive, don't let him carry the burden of this disaster... He shouldn't carry the burden of the crime I committed "

"Captain..." Murdoch's face was filled with agony.

"Do you understand what I'm saying? This is the last order I'm giving to both of you" he shifted his gaze at Lightoller and again at Murdoch. They both silently nodded.

"Keep Jeon safe no matter what, Make sure he lives. He shouldn't be the victim of the Star Line's act of stupidity... He has to survive" Captain's intense voice echoed in the room.

"My last order is to keep him safe, Jeon Jungkook should live..."

Lightoller remembered every word Captain Smith told them before he perished. His last will was to keep the young captain safe. Keeping him safe meant that he didn't become a victim of the foolish decision they made. For his soul to rest in peace, Jungkook had to survive.

"Don't worry Captain, we are going to make it" He whispered, gazing emotionally at the pale face of his young captain.

It was a matter of time before Jungkook's body gave up, blacking out completely.

But he didn't die that night.

He survived.

                ༄༄༄༄༄༄༄༄༄༄༄

Including Jungkook himself, four men were saved from the water after the Titanic completely sank into the deep water. Many others survived by swimming towards nearby lifeboats right after the sinking.

Overall around seven hundred and five people including 412 passengers and 214 crew members survived. All of them were rescued by the RMS Carpathia which arrived six hours after the Titanic completely sunk, arriving around 8.30 am giving hope to the survivors.

Even though each other didn't know, that those 705 passengers included both Park Y/n and Jeon Jungkook. Both had survived the tragedy. Only they didn't know that they passed each other.

Lightoller immediately took Jungkook inside the hospital bay of the Carpathia with the help of their crew. His condition looked terrible. Jungkook had almost stopped breathing. Lightoller feared that it may be the end of Jeon Jungkook but he was reluctant to give up on him.

As he rushed behind Jungkook who was being carried on a trolley inside the hospital bay of the ship, he collided with a female figure who looked like a wreck.

"I'm so sorry Miss" He abruptly said but she looked like a statue, not holding any emotions. She didn't even seem to notice anyone slamming into her.

But she looked oddly familiar to Lightoller. His brain was too messed up to think who the hell she was. He knew he was familiar with that face. Before he could ask something she walked away like a zombie in the other direction.

Lightoller shrugged his thoughts and ran inside to escort Jungkook. The doctors were checking on him.

"He's suffering from severe hypothermia. I'm not sure if he could be saved but I'll do my best" As the doctor said he let out a deep sigh, looking at the figure who was lying down between the warm sheets.

He looks almost dead...

Without Murdoch by his side,  he felt so lost. At the last moment when he looked at his first officer in command, he saw the grimace in his eyes. He knew what he was thinking.

"Murdoch..." he looked at his fellow with agony twitching on his face.

"Please follow the Captain's Orders Lightoller..." He said with a determined look on his face.

"You are not going to stay on board are you?" Lightollers voice sounded broken. The only response from Murdoch was a silent nod. He gazed at the chaos happening on the ship.

"I shall go down with the ship"

Lightoller looked at him, standing frozen. He knew there was no chance of changing his mind. Even though his heart clenched he had to respect his decision.

William Murdoch went down with the Titanic on 15th April 1912, finding his resting place in the deep ocean bed with the other souls that rested in peace.

Their captain was dead, his first officer in command perished, and the other captain was only one step away from death. Lightoller was flustered. But he determined to stay by Jungkook. He strongly believed that he might survive even though he had a lesser chance. He came out from the cabin, walking to the deck where people were roaming. It was crowded with survivors and aids that helped them.

An officer came to him with a pen and a sheet of paper.

"These are all the survivors from the Titanic, is there anyone we missed here?" Lightoller took the sheets and flipped through them. He scribbled down a few names of people who were in the boat with him that weren't recorded on the papers.

He was about to write Jungkook's name but he halted.

The White Star Line shouldn't know that he survived, they'll blame him for what happened.

He knew the consequences of the White Star line knowing Jeon Jungkook's survival. They will of course put the whole blame upon him. Jungkook had suffered enough because of this. He doesn't have to go through that again. Lightoller looked at the officer,

"That's all, you can take this" he returned the sheets of paper without writing Jungkook's name.

He knew he did the right thing.

The world shouldn't know that he survived. It should remain a secret.
