Cain

"It wasn't a stupid lamb," I snapped. "That lamb had a name, Abel. He was my favorite and I was about to give it up to God until YOU stole it from me."

"It's not my fault no one believed you," he said. "You did that to yourself."

"Fuck you," I snapped lowly. "You've stolen everything from me since we were children. You won't steal my sister."

Abel leaned away from me slowly and nodded as a smile appeared on his lips. "So that's what this is about. You're afraid that OUR sister, just like everyone else, will choose me over you."

"That's not tr-"

"No, no, no," he interrupted. "I understand. If I were you, I'd be afraid as well."

My anger bubbled up at his words and I gripped the table in an effort to get a grip of my actions. "Needless to say, brother, your jealousy will not stop me from getting to know my sister. I'll find her without your help."

I grabbed his collar and lifted him from his seat. A smile remained on his unbothered and ugly face as I clenched my jaw. "You will never speak to her."

"Cain?" A voice from behind me called.

I turned around to see Mia and I shoved Abel into his seat. What is she doing here? I turned to face her and plastered a smile on my face as I opened my arms.

"My love," I said grandly. "What are you doing here?"

"Are you following me?" She asked as she stormed over to me.

"Obviously not...considering I was here first..." I said in a 'duh' tone. "Maybe you're the one following me."

"She's not here for you," Abel said from behind me.

Mia moved past my outstretched hands and to his side. I turned around and watched as they kissed and she hesitantly looked at me. "You know Jackson?"

"Jackson?"

"Yes," she said slowly as she looked between the both of us. "Things looked heated before I came here. How do the both of you know one another?"

"This is the Jackson you've been dating for the past three years?" I asked in shock.

"Yes," she said.

"We should get going," Abel said as he wrapped an arm around her.

"No, no, let's not go," I said as I blocked their path.

"Cain..." Mia said in irritation.

"This is the Jackson that you're about to marry?"

"Yes!" She exclaimed as she threw her hands up. "I wanted to introduce the two of you soon but since you've already met..."

"Oh, we've met!" I said with a shocked laugh. Abel's jaw clenched no doubt from the fear that I would reveal his identity and I rubbed the stubble on my jaw.

"How do the two of you know one another?" She asked.

"Oh, we go way back," Abel said with a forced smile.

"Way, way, way back. He's like a brother to me," I said with a laugh.

"Oh great!" Mia said.

"A brother that I want to murder, of course," I added.

Abel cleared his throat and looked down at her. "We had a falling out—a misunderstanding if you will."

Mia nodded slowly and tucked her fiery red hair behind her ear. "Don't tell me you used to rob banks together," she joked.

"Oh no, but trust me, he would make a fucking fantastic robber," I said with a forced laugh.

"I'll be right back, love," he said to her as he kissed her cheek. She smiled quickly and looked between the two of us suspiciously as Abel wrapped a heavy arm around my shoulders. "Let's talk."

I let him guide me down a couple of blocks and we walked in silence until he pushed me into a dark alley. "Cain, listen—"

"You knew," I said lowly.

"What?"

"It can't be a coincidence that you're dating the girl I'm in love with. You knew," I said quietly. "That's why you started dating her, isn't it? To prove to me once again you can crush my dreams."

He ran a hand through his hair and placed a hand onto his hip. "I admit, it started that way but..."

"But what?" I asked.

"I fell in love with her."

At his words, my anger became uncontrollable and I tackled him into a pile of trash bags. My fist connected with his in a hard punch. He fought me until he managed to claw at my face and push me down. I groaned as he punched me in the face and I laughed as I felt blood ooze out of my lip.

"Calm down," he said sternly as he stood up. He wiped his busted lip and rolled his eyes at me. "Do you love her?"

"You fucking know I do, you asshole," I said as I spit the blood in my mouth out onto his expensive shoe. He glanced down at the blood staining his feet and pinched the bridge of his nose.

I gave him a bloody smile and he looked down at me in disgust. "Grow the fuck up, Cain."

"Says the man that likes to steal his brother's things," I said.

"She was never yours," he yelled. "Even if I were to leave her, tell me that she would want you. You knew her for over a year and she dated me within days of meeting me. Get over it!"

His words felt like razors being slashed across my face and my heart splintered as I kept a calm expression on my face. Perhaps it hurt so much because he was right. The truth that I'd been denying all this time was as clear as day.

Whether Mia chose a Jackson or Abel, was irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. She didn't choose me. That was one abundantly clear thing. I just hated that my enemy was the one that was pointing it out to me.

I stood up weakly from the floor and nodded as I looked in his general direction. I would've waited for her for years longer but he was right. She didn't want me.

"Fine," I said in defeat. "I'll stay away from the both of you under one condition."

"What is the condition?" He asked.

"Stay away from my sister. Don't even try to look for her," I said emotionlessly as I stared at a nearby dumpster. "She's all I have."

"Okay," he said as he waved his hand. "I don't even know her."

At his agreement with my terms, I slowly walked out of the alley. My heart wasn't the only thing that was broken as I made the walk back to my car.

My spirit was crushed as well.

I looked blankly at the street in front of me and weakly started the car. I sped down the street mindlessly as I swerved through lanes carelessly and thought about the years I had spent chasing Mia.

I suppose I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was. He was the better of the two of us anyhow. My life would've been a lot easier if I just accepted that fact.

I closed my eyes and leaned my head against the seat as I pressed on the gas pedal. The honking of the cars was music to my ears as I drove aimlessly. I looked back at the road painfully as I ran a hand down my face.

My head throbbed as I tried to calm down and my vision became blurred as tears pooled in my eyes. I quickly blinked them away and continued driving nowhere.

My phone rang beside me in the seat and I looked down at it to see a picture of Mia flash across the screen. Even though I couldn't be with her and I was angry, I needed to hear her voice.

I swerved the car to avoid another car and my phone fell to the floor. "Shit," I whispered.

I eased up on the gas and made sure the road was clear before I leaned down to pick it up. I pressed answer on the phone and held it up to my ear.

"Hello?" I called softly.

"Cain, what the fuck?" She cried into the phone. "Jackson said you attacked him! I know how you feel but I didn't think you'd ever go to actually ruin things for me. I hate you!"

The phone hung up and my phone dropped from my hand to my lap. The tears I had blinked away resurfaced once again and my vision was messed up. I turned to my left when I heard a loud honk and a bright light but before I could react a huge impact hit the side of the car. I heard nothing but the crunching of metal and the breaking of glass as the car flipped repeatedly.

I hung upside down in pain as I bled out from an item stuck in my side. I coughed up blood and weakly hit the window, but there was no use.

My phone buzzed on the roof that was now below me and I looked at the blood-stained phone. I weakly used the last of my strength to grab it and hazily read a message from Queen.

BabySis: Please pick up milk! LOVE YOUUU!!!

I smiled through the pain and from the feel of the blood rushing to my head. I slowly typed a response as I heard the footsteps racing to the car. I ignored the sirens and bright lights rushing in my direction and took shallow breaths.

I hit send on the message and relaxed, knowing that I said goodbye to the person I loved the most. That was enough to put my mind at rest as darkness came and wrapped its arms around me.
