My heart was more at ease now that Bezy was sound asleep in bed but my mind was still running in circles. I never thought about what Syn would like when he came home. I knew he'd look the same but there was something different in the way he looked at me.
It truly made me want to do what Cleo said but I fought against it. He left me and he couldn't just come back as if nothing happened.
I moved to my bed and began folding clothes to distract myself but my eyes kept drifting to my closed door. There was nothing but a hallway between Syn and I which made staying away from him even more difficult.
I gave up on folding a few minutes later and started stuffing clothes into my drawers. I froze when a slow and rhythmic knock sounded at my door and I took a deep breath. I slowly made my way to the door with small steps and silent mantras.
Please don't be him.
Please don't be him.
Please don't be h-
"Hello, Princess," Syn said smoothly as he leaned his forearm against the door frame and looked down at me. His eyes were back to their regular shade of green and his hair was black as night. He licked his pink lips and I rolled my eyes to look anywhere but at them.
Instead of replying to him, I stepped back and swung the door closed. I fought the urge to open it and with a deep breath, I turned around and took a step in the direction of my bed. The same knocking at the door made me stop and I turned to open it again.
"What do you want?" I asked in irritation.
"You."
"Well, you can't have me."
"And why is that?" He asked as he walked into my room. I took a step back and he shut my room door.
"Why'd you close the door?" I asked as I crossed my arms.
"I wanted to be alone with you."
"We could be alone with the door open," I said as I walked towards it and opened it. "Wide open."
"You're mad at me," he said.
"Yeah, no shit smartass," I said in annoyance as I walked past him.
"You still take my breath away," he whispered from behind me.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"Can you leave?" I asked as I sat on my bed and pointed to the door. He headed to the door but instead of leaving as I asked, he closed the door and walked towards me. I took a shaky breath and closed my eyes as he came in front of me and bent down.
I held my lips firmly together as I felt his warm breath on mine and smelled the savory scent of his aftershave. His finger gently traced down my thigh and I swatted his hand away.
With a deep chuckle he stood up straight and I felt the bed move beside me. I opened my eyes to look at him and I rolled them when I found him staring at me.
"Syn we're not together anymore," I said as I stood up.
"Yes we are," he replied calmly.
"No. We're not. You left for an entire month and didn't call or text or anything. Who fucking does that to someone they love?"
"Someone who has to do something important," he said seriously as he leaned his arms onto his thighs.
I had to ignore the way his sleeves were rolled up on his muscular forearms and exposing his tattoo sleeve. If I paid any more attention to the occasional flexing, I'd pass out.
I shook my head and blinked a few times to clear my head before looking back down at him. "Even more important than me?"
"Nothing is more important than you," he whispered.
"Then where did you go? And why did you have to leave me in the dark to do it?"
"It did it for you," he said in an earnest tone. "But I can't answer any of those questions."
"Why?" I asked.
"I just can't."
"Then what I said still holds," I replied defiantly. "We're done."
"We're not though unless you'd like a divorce," he suggested. "Which I'm not letting you get."
"A divorce?" I asked. "We're not even married yet."
He looked at me momentarily before smiling up at me and nodding slowly. "Right."
"What do you mean right? You proposed and left. We never got married."
"Sorry, I forgot we didn't go that far this time around."
"What the hell are you talking about?" I asked in confusion.
"Nothing," he finally said as he stood up. "We're still together though, and we are still...engaged."
"You can't force me to be with you if I don't want to be."
Instead of answering my question, his eyes fell onto my chest and I rolled my eyes. "Where's your necklace, Princess?"
I looked up at him in confusion and touched my bare neck. "How do you remember that?" I whispered.
He smiled down at me and touched the area my hand was and shook his head. "How do you think?"
My heart skipped a beat as I looked up at him and he wrapped his arms around my waist. Does he remember?
"H-how-"
"Remember you wore it the day we met and it glowed in my car," he said slowly with a raised brow. With a disappointed sigh, I removed myself from his arms and pointed to the door.
"You've overstayed your welcome."
He looked at the door and then at the watch on his wrist with a nod. "Okay, I need to go take care of something anyway." He moved to walk past me and I placed a hand on his chest to stop him.
"You're disappearing again?" I asked.
"No," he said as he looked down at my hand. "I'm never leaving you again."
I dropped my hand when I realized what I had just done and I crossed my arms. "I wouldn't care if you did."
"Okay, Princess," he said as he teased the word 'Princess' along with his tongue. "I'll see you around."
I remained silent as he continued walking to the door. I heard him open it but when it didn't close, I turned around to find him leaning against the doorframe with his hands in his pockets.
"I didn't think it'd be possible to love you more but..." he said. "I'm crazy about the person you've grown into after all this time."
"Well, thirty days of missing and being worried about someone really changes a person," I said rudely.
"Thirty days, huh?"
"Yes. Why are you acting so weird?" I questioned.
"I'm just glad to be back here with you."
"Well, you're not with me."
"If you say so," he said slowly. "Have a good night, Princess. I'm right across the hall if you have bad dreams, you-"
"Just go please," I interrupted.
He nodded and tapped the frame before crossing the hall to his room. As soon as he closed his door I closed mine and leaned against it. Fuck.
How did he seem more intimidating after his trip than the time we spent together before he left. The aura about him had somehow changed and it almost overpowered me in this room. He used to have that effect on me before he died but it's been long gone.
So why now?
My phone buzzed from the table and I walked towards my bed and crawled on it. I propped myself up on my arms to look at the notifications and saw a text message from an unknown number.
(xxx)-xxx-xxxx: Hi.
Me: Who is this?
(xxx)-xxx-xxxx: I'm not that irrelevant. Take a wild guess.
