Syn
It wasn't long before Queen's heartbeat evened out and her soft snores filled the room. Knowing she was finally asleep, I looked to Hades who was completely absorbed in what he was doing on the computer.
"Is there another reason you're here?" I asked him.
He smiled up at me and adjusted his glasses before shaking his head. "I just want to keep our Queen safe," he said. "She's made the underworld more...kind, for lack of better words. No offense to your father."
"None taken," I muttered. "What do you mean kind, though?"
"You and your father are great but the underworld seemed to always be such a dark place. I get that's it's supposed to be, but it feels like more of a home instead of a torture world now," he said as he looked up at me. "I hope I'm not crossing any lines, your highness."
"You're fine."
When my father was in charge, it was true that we didn't place any sort of importance in making sure that the underworld felt like a home to its residents. We cared more about torturing souls and world domination.
Hearing Hades speak so highly of Queen's reign made me look at our differences. How could someone so sweet fall for someone like me? I wondered if I ever asked myself that question because it didn't take a genius to figure out that I hardly deserved her.
"She never stopped loving you, Sir," Hades said.
"Excuse me?"
"Queen, she never stopped loving you."
I looked back down at my sleeping beauty and ran my finger along her soft skin. It pained me to think about her never getting back the man she truly loved, the old me. Could she truly live a life with me creating new memories as she was stuck in past ones?
"Hades, I don't remember her before I died," I said.
"How?"
"I have no idea, I just woke up back here and I knew everyone except her."
"Well the only beings able to erase memory are Heavenly ones. Did you go to Heaven after you died?" He asked with a laugh.
I became serious as I remembered the deal I made with the Seers for Xavia's life. They clearly didn't keep their side of the deal so who's to say they didn't take my soul anyway.
"Suppose someone in Heaven did take my memory, how would I get it back?" I asked.
"Well," he began as he put the computer to the side. "There are a few options."
I nodded for him to continued and he removed his glasses and set them to the side. "Option 1, beg God...mind you, that never works. Option two, go to a warlock that specializes in ancient magic. They'll shock your brain with black magic and you'll either come out with your memory or be a vegetable until the end of time."
"Comforting, any more options?"
"One, he said. I've done research in Heaven and they have a reversible cure to memory loss since there are a lot of rogue angels who seem to mess with memory."
"An apple."
"Seriously? An apple?" I asked in disappointment.
"Not just any apple, an apple of knowledge from the garden of Eden. It has the ability to cure any ailment that your heart desires. Usually you can only get it after going to court in Heaven and the supreme leaders decide-"
"How easy is it to break into the garden?" I questioned.
"Oh, it's impossible," Hades said. "It's heavily guarded and there's a barrier you can't pass unless you belong to Heaven."
My head began to throb and I winced and closed my eyes as a memory moved to the forefront of my mind.
"You and Queen are both predominantly creatures of Hell along with your daughter. That tips the scales completely and will eventually lead to the end of the world. We need one of your souls to become property of Heaven."
"I'll do it," I said quickly.
"Wouldn't you like to know what that entails?" Siddhartha asked.
"I don't care. You can have whatever soul I have, just leave my family alone."
"It means that once you die, your soul will go to Heaven and we can use it as we please," he explained.
"That's fine," I said.
When I opened my eyes I looked back at Hades and he looked at me with concern. "Are you alright, sir?"
"Hypothetically, if I was an underworld creature, but my soul belonged to Heaven...could I get past the barrier to the garden?"
He nodded slowly and crossed his arms. "Hypothetically, I suppose you could. That still leaves the guards and hypothetically, if you were to kill said guards...you could be executed."
"Not if I was belonged to Heaven, right?"
He scoffed and shook his head as he studied me. "I suppose not. Heaven seems to only get upset when underworlders kill their people. But I suppose if you weren't an underworlder you'd be fine."
"Interesting," I said.
"But then again, this entire hypothetical plan of yours goes to shit if you don't belong to Heaven."
"I think I do," I mumbled.
"What?" He spoke up.
"I know, it sounds crazy but it's a long story. In a deal, my soul became Heaven's property. I think that's where I went when I died and they took my memories," I said.
"Fuck," he breathed out. "So you want to break into Eden and take an apple of knowledge to get your memory?"
"Yes."
"Okay, do it then," he said with a shrug.
"Just like that?" I asked.
"I'm sure you and Queen would both want your memories back to yes, why not?"
"You literally said why not. You described this as a suicide mission," I muttered.
"Well, I can help you get past the guards but only your theory your soul can help you get into the garden."
"How can you help with the guards?"
"Well you have your magic, and I can direct you to the maker of the most volatile weapons in all the realms."
I nodded slowly as I looked back at Queen. "I need to get them back. For her."
"You're going to leave, aren't you?"
"Will you take care of her?" I asked.
"I will, hell the world will take care of her after I release this," he insisted.
I nodded and gently moved out from under Queen. She stirred a bit but I set a pillow under her head and walked to the closet. I packed a few clothes into it and walked to the library to get money I could need.
"Where should I tell her you went?" He asked.
"Tell her, I left to do something important. No specifics."
"Yes, sir."
I spent the next few minutes packing up everything I needed to and took the keys to the motorcycle. "Tell her I'll give these back."
"Wouldn't teleportation be faster?" Hades asked.
"The magic lock."
"That was lifted a couple days ago," he said.
"Why?"
"It can only be up for one week at a time, since there were no traces of you and Queen the warlocks were ordered to lift it."
I set the keys down and nodded. "Well okay then, I'll just-"
"I come too," Bezy said cheerfully.
"You should take him," Hades said.
"Fuck no." I was supposed to be as discreet as I could. I doubted he could be quiet and hide anywhere if I asked.
"If you and Queen are to marry, he'll practically become your son."
"My what?"
"Dad?" Bezy asked as he looked at me in confusion.
"Fuck no."
Hades laughed and held his phone in his hands. "Queen loves him, this could be a good bonding experience."
I groaned and ran a hand through my hair. "Fine."
"Yay!" Bezy cheered as he clapped and laughed.
"There's a map of Heaven in Queen's office if you need it. Maybe you can find the garden before you even step into Heaven."
I nodded at his advice and walked over to Queen who was still sleeping soundly. I gave her a quick kiss and then kissed the top of her head.
"Be safe, Princess."
