3. Meeting Soo-im.
"How much time do you spend on worrying? I'll getting ready to battle with the things that are bothering you,"
- Look (GOT7)
"We're home!" Woo-joo announced as he opened the door, Yuna following closely behind him, looking around the house. The last time she had been here was when Young Jae invited her and Sang-jun over to watch a movie. It had changed completely. All the fancy furniture Myung-joo had painstakingly situated was gone, replaced with worn down, comfortable seats and couches. Plants were in almost every corner, filling the air with their pleasant scent, and adding a pop of color to the neutral tones.
"Already?" a voice answered, and a woman came strolling out of the kitchen. She had a warm, motherly look to her, and wore casual clothes, her curly hair pulled back in a messy ponytail. "Hello, you must be Yuna," she smiled, holding out a hand to the girl. "I'm Lee Soo-im,"
"It's nice to meet you," she shook her hand. "I love your choice of plants. It really brightens up everything Soo-im-ssi,"
"Thank you! Me and Woo-joo are big on plants. We love gardening in our spare time. Come, please take a seat, and call me Aunt Soo-im. I won't mind," she ushered her towards the living room. Yuna placed her bag down next to her. "So, Yuna. Please tell me a little bit about yourself?"
"About myself? Well, I was born in England, and lived there for a couple of years. My grandfather always wanted us to come here and take over their estate, so we moved here to Sky Castle," Soo-im poured out three cups of tea, wisps of steam forming patterns in the air. "I'd struggled a lot with my Korean, but I've improved a lot,"
"Really?"
"Yeah. At first, I could old say 'hello' and 'how much is this?',"
"But those are the most essential questions," Woo-joo nudged her, smiling. "She's downplaying how smart she is mom. She's almost always competing with Ye-seo and Hye-na for the top three,"
"That's very impressive," Soo-im said, blowing over her tea to cool it down. "Does that mean you enjoy studying?"
"Absolutely not," the reply is immediate. "I used to, but I got tired of it,"
"Tired of what?" Soo-im asked, listening carefully.
"The constant competition. It's exhausting, having to keep up with everyone. And hurtful too. I grew sick and tired of having to squash over my friends to reach for the number one spot," Yuna's voice was bitter. "It's always been like that, especially here in Sky Castle, where our parents compare us to each other every single day. You're lucky Woo-joo, to have a mom that's so understanding,"
"Is it so necessary to be the best?"
"To me? Not really. I've witnessed first hand how, despite getting the best grades, families can still have tons of trouble,"
"Is that the case with the family that lived here before us?" the question made Yuna smile faintly.
"My mom doesn't want to talk about what happened, but I'll tell you what I know. Young Jae and my brother were very close, being the same age and having the same goal. Aunt Myung-joo loved Young Jae with all her heart, but was still adamant on him getting into SNU. She tried every possible thing, and whatever she did, it worked. Young Jae got into his parents's dream university, and went away for a while to clear his mind and sort out his thoughts. But what happened? Aunt Myung-joo killed herself," Yuna leaned in close. "It just shows that even a perfect family with a son that is smart and polite has a shroud of secrets,"
"But why did she kill herself?"
"My mom has a suspicion, but she won't say anything. Which means it has something to do with Young Jae and his studies. Whatever happened, it must've been pretty messed up,"
"Your brother was close to Young Jae. Maybe he knew something," Yuna pursed her lips, looking away.
"My brother hasn't talked to Young Jae since before the incident. Sang-jun-" she hesitated. "He's going through a rough patch,"
"Well we all have those," Soo-im said kindly, but Yuna shook her head.
"What I said about a perfect family's illusion also applies to my own Aunt Soo-im," silence filled the once cheerful room, and Yuna cleared her throat. "Let's talk about less depressing things. Can I see Woo-joo's room?"
"It's not clean-"
"Sure," his mother cut off his protest. "I'll just finish up dinner," Woo-joo led Yuna to his room, opening the door for her.
"This is your definition of 'not clean'?" she asked, glancing around at the near spotless room. Just like outside, plants in cream colored pots were dotted around, books organized neatly in a shelf. His desk still had notes and pens scattered over the surface, paintings on the walls. "You should come see mine one day,"
"If it's anything like your personality, it'll probably be very interesting,"
"What's that supposed to mean?" she raised an eyebrow.
"I mean that you're a very curious person. I've never met someone this bright despite having what appears to be a problematic family,"
"I wouldn't describe them as 'problematic'. Just more set in their traditions,"
"Traditions you disagree with,"
"Yeah. But I have it way better than others. I have a stable life and good friends like you,"
"Speaking of good friends, what's your relationship with the twins?"
"The twins?" she repeated, a smile appearing on her face. "Me and the twins go way back. Our moms were friends that met when they were younger, and kept in contact as the years went by. We moved here, and I became best friends with Ki-joon and Seo-joon. I trust them with everything, and they trust me with everything too. We've very close,"
"Especially Ki-joon, right?" Woo-joo teased.
"You're not one to talk. I've seen you and Hye-na," he flushed.
"There's nothing to talk about!"
"Sure Woo-joo,"
"I'm serious!"
"Mhmm. Whatever you say,"
