Chasing the Devil's Tail
Bad people don't feel guilty. They are too busy being bad. Good people feel guilty because they are good people, even if the goodness is hidden deep in their core and they feel they have done wrong.
Whether it was letting someone down, they made a mistake or screwed up somewhere. Good people have a conscious, bad people don't. If someone feels guilty then that's a good sign. It shows that person is moving on the right track. But the person has to realise how they deal with it, because guilt is a terribly selfish emotion. It is wasteful and pointless.
As Damon Salvatore stood on one of the balconies overlooking the bustling streets of the French Quarter, he realised he had two choices; put it right or dump the guilt.
Footsteps approaching Damon from behind brings him out of his thoughts. His eyes soften towards his sister whose been on his mind regarding his guilt, "Is heโ"
"Nope." Lola forces a smile before she sighs softly standing beside Damon on the balcony. She looked exhausted after spending the last day or so with Klaus trying to figure out a way to bring Elijah out of the unconscious state Esther put him in, "But we'll figure it out and bring him back."
The oldest Salvatore wears a placid smile looking out at the French Quarter, "I get it now. This place being your home."
"There was a part of me that didn't always want to admit that this has been your home deep down for a hundred years because you know, I wanted you to see Mystic Falls as your home." He shrugs, smiling softly over to his sister, "I honestly can't even remember the last time I seen you like this."
"Like what?" Lola raises a brow with a teasing expression, "Confused at you not being a dick?"
Damon rolls his eyes, chuckling as he wraps his arm around his sister's shoulders, "I'm trying to have a nice moment here, Lo."
"I mean I can't remember the last time I seen you this relaxed. Sure it's not like everything is all peace around here and I doubt it ever will be but.." He sighs, his throat flexed with a hard swallow as he remembers when Lola would be in Mystic Falls and it always seemed like she was just a shell of her usual self. His arm drops from around Lola, "You're not all tense like you are back in Mystic Falls."
The stiffened posture and somber look on the heretic's face was proof enough at Damon's words. She clears her throat, looking out at the city, "There are just a lot of bad memories from that place."
The corner of her lips twitched into a faint smile, "But there's good ones too. Like this."
Her hand reaches into her back pocket of her jeans, lifting up a beermat. The same beermat that she written on back in the nineties which was the only way to shut Damon up about getting her back to their hometown, "Figured once the barrier has gone off the town we can cross another one of these off."
A strong wave of nostalgia washed over Damon as he chuckles softly taking the beermat in his hand. His thumb grazes across the cross against the number one. The red marking that he did a few hours prior to Lola arriving back in Mystic Falls three years ago. He felt a lump in his throat, thinking back to everything that happened since then..the way his entire relationship with his sister almost became nothing. Because of him.
"Well, you're in luck. I got another one." Damon pulls out the exact same beermat with Lola's handwriting on it, minus the red cross Damon put on it, "I found it in the prison world with no crosses against any of them so technically.." He plasters the infamous Salvatore smirk as he nudges his sister, "I can get you back to town five more times and not just two."
The blonde Salvatore couldn't help but laugh as she rolled her eyes before her expression turned more subdued. Back when Lola first went back to Mystic Falls, she was still living in the past. Haunted by the darkness that had filled her life in the decades she lived through. But these last three years have taught Lola to stop focusing on the past because it doesn't get you anywhere.
There was at least one or two things that Lola still held back on, those topics being things she hasn't uttered to anyone in her life. Those topics being the reasons she came to hate Mystic Falls before 1864.
"You don't need to use them to get me back to Mystic Falls anymore. Just say the word and I'll be there." She meant her words, Damon knew that by the genuine tone of her voice. But he could also see the faint look in her eyes that made her wish she could retract what she said as she said it.
Lola elbows him in the side as she changes the topic as quickly as she could regarding her dislike to her hometown, "You gonna tell me why you've had a guilty look on your face ever since you came here?"
Good people have a conscious, bad people don't.
Those words ran through Damon's head as he thought about how to put into words how much he feels like he's let his sister down. He sighs deeply, "I should've been here for you more, Lo. In New Orleans. I should've been here instead of being dramatic and crashing the car into the grill. I could'veโ"
"Nothing would've stopped what happened, D." Lola quickly stops Damon from this spiral of guilt that he was clearly in.
They hadn't said much about what happened when it came to Hope. As far as Damon knows, Hope died. He knew the story that everyone but a handful of people knew. It killed Lola to keep something like this from her brother and she always felt like she could never hide anything from him. She prayed that this was a case where he believed her words, but the feeling in the pit of her stomach made her think he knew it was just a faรงade.
And though he may not know just yet exactly what happened, or why these lies are covering it up; Damon remained silent on the subject. Because if he knew anything about his sister, it was that she protects those she loves more than anything and put people's needs before hers.
"But hey, you're here now, right?" Lola's eyes were warm with genuine happiness towards her brother, a look in her eyes that seemed rare towards the oldest Salvatore over the last few years, "And I couldn't be happier about that. I've missed you so much, jackass."
Damon chuckles at how Lola could sound so genuine but than also call him an ass in the same sentence, "Way to ruin a moment. I've missed you too."
"Speaking of the beermat..when we spoke about that on the video call you said you were coming to New Orleans to get your leather jacket back." Lola raises a brow, giving him a look full of mischief, "Am I going to have to fight you for it?"
"Nah, you look better in it than I do anyway." Damon chuckles shaking his head before he shrugs, "Besides..I've got at least twenty back home, remember?"
Lola couldn't help but laugh at the same look of mischief in her brother's eyes as he recites what she said to him on the video call all those months ago, "Well that's good because I don't know if you'd want it back anyway, it's a little tainted more than it already was.."
The heretic laughs even more when she sees the smile against Damon's lips drop, brows furrow looking instantly disgusted and annoyed at her, "I'm not even sorry."

Klaus steps into Elijah's room with a defeated look on his face, desperate to find a way to bring his brother out of the spell their mother casted on him. The hybrid's eyes soften when he looks to the side of Elijah's bed to see Lola curled up on the chair with her grimoire opened beside her. She has barely left Elijah's side from the minute Klaus brought him home. She exhausted every grimoire she had wanting to do whatever she could to help.
With a heavy breath, Klaus steps closer to the side of Elijah's bed. The older Mikaelson's body was trembling, beads of sweat against his skin and breath ragged as Klaus closes his eyes, pressing his hand against Elijah's forehead, "I know you are locked in battle, however deep in your mind our mother has set the stage. Hear my voice."
Lola wakes up with a frown as she hears Klaus' voice, her eyes flutter open looking towards Klaus towering over Elijah as the older Mikaelson twitches anxiously in his sleep.
"Nik.." She says softly but Klaus was too absorbed in his attempt to get into Elijah's mind.
"Our mother thinks she will win because she has left you alone, but you are not alone. Let me in."
Lola stands up from the chair, moving closer to Klaus cautiously. Her eyes fill with worry seeing Klaus' nose beginning to bleed, his body twitching as he gets a glimpse into the dreams Elijah is having.
With a sharp gasp, Klaus breaks away as Lola's hand goes against his shoulder. He whips around to face her, his hands grip around her arms. As his panicked eyes meet her worrisome ones, he exhales a heavy breath.
"Nik, you've already tried this once.." Lola's tone was soft and calm watching as Klaus wipes away the blood from his nose, "Your mom has locked you out, it's not possible."
"I have to keep trying." Klaus was dismissive of Lola's worry, but not intentional.
His main focus was getting his brother back and wouldn't stop until he did. He frowns looking back towards Elijah, noticing a mark against his neck Klaus hadn't noticed before, "I haven't seen this since I was a child."
Lola's gaze follows where Klaus' is, watching as the hybrid tilts Elijah's head to the side to show the floral mark against his neck, "Mikael would return home from battle more blindly temperamental than usual, and our mother would use the petals of a rare merlock orchid to put him to sleep. She would mend his mind with a spell, and then wake him with the roots of the same plant."
Klaus turns to face Lola, his eyes full of hope, "If she has access to it now, then maybe it also grows in the Bayou. You stay here with your brothers and mind the fort."
The heretic scoffs, rolling her eyes as Klaus walks away from her towards the door, "I'd rather rip your mother's head off."
Klaus turns on his heel to face Lola just as she turns to face him. His face was stern, "Stay clear of her." His voice gets more severe seeing Lola looking away from him, "I mean it, Lola. She already got to you once."
"I don't care." Lola thrashes her arms through the air to silence Klaus, her face full of annoyance regarding the original witch, "I care about Elijah and I want to help!"
The Mikaelson sighs, understanding Lola's determination to help, "I know you do, love, but you can't. What would happen if Elijah were to wake and find you a victim of her madness?"
He closes the gap between them both, tilting his head to catch her gaze, "Lola, please. I know you hate being told what to do but for once, please..do as you're told."
Holding her tongue always felt impossible when it came to Lola, especially when it was Klaus who was trying to tell her what to do. She exhales a sharp breath before shrugging, "Okay fine, but enough with talking to be like I'm a child. I won't go after her, I promise."
She gives him a half smile, hoping that would be enough for him. Which it was. Klaus returned the same half smile, kissing her cheek before walking out of the room. The smile against Lola's lips instantly dropped as she heard his footsteps go faint.
"I've learned a few things from your mother." Lola says quietly as she turns to face Elijah in the bed, she sighs sitting on the edge of it, "And I've learned a lot from you, Elijah. Especially when it comes to loopholes."
The smallest hint of a weak smile twitches at the corner of her lips as she fixes the bed sheets against Elijah, "I won't go after her. I'll go after everything that she loves."
โโคโ
"So let me get this straight.." Damon drawls out after getting caught up on what's been going on while he was in the prison world, "You and Lola go to France, you kill this Wetherby-what's-his-face and that's it?"
He stops walking and with a raised brow turns to face his brother who shows nearly no emotion, "You're seriously telling me that nothing chaotic happened during a plan that our sister planned?"
Stefan purses his lips with an indifferent look, "That's exactly what I'm saying."
It was a complete lie and in all honesty, Stefan didn't care what Damon figured out he wasn't telling the full truth. It felt irrelevant to Stefan now that Lola forced them both onto the backs of motorbikes from a group of bikers she started to speak to after running away from Stefan. It was in the past and everything from their time in France was put to bed.
"You're a terrible liar, Stefan." Damon scoffs, rolling his eyes, "You remember our sister, right? Chaotic, crazy and completely insane..I could only imagine what it was like when her plan was to go and kill the guy that has literally caused so much crap for our family. Especially with her humanity off."
"I'll justโ" Damon's smug smirk fades when he opens up Lola's bedroom door to find it empty. He huffs, "Where the hell is she now?"
Meanwhile, at Marcel's loft it's filled with his infectious laughter as he sits with Lola, "I'm just saying..it's bad enough having one chaotic Salvatore in the city, now we have to have all three of you?"
Marcel glances over to Lola sitting on the chair beside him as she smiles looking down at the bourbon in her hand. He's known her for years, he knows when she's holding back on something, "You gonna be honest with me yet?"
"Hm?" Lola jumps out of her thoughts, looking over to Marcel with a faint smile, "What do you mean?"
"Look, Lo.." Marcel sighs, setting his drink to the side as he moves to the edge of his seat, "You're always welcome at my place. Regardless if your brothers are getting on your nerves or not. You're my family and I will always always be here for you. You know you can talk to me, right?"
"Yeah, I know I can. It's just.." Lola closes her eyes, figuring out how to even put into words how she's feeling right now. A soft yet shaky breath escapes her lips as she opens her eyes, "It's easier to not talk about it. Because when I do talk about it, everything gets really overwhelming and I get back into this cycle where I feel like I can't breathe andโ"
"Hey, it's okay." Marcel reaches out, taking Lola's hand as he noticed her starting to get upset, "How are things with Klaus? And Elijah?"
"Klaus..we're fine." She sighs looking down at the glass of bourbon in her hand, "Uhm, I still feel guilty. For pretty much turning my back on him by turning my humanity off when we were both grieving and me adding even more onto his plate than he's already got going on. And Elijah.."
She puts the glass to the side, releasing her hand from Marcel's as she leans forward and runs her hands through her hair, "God..I feel horrible. I keep replaying our argument in my head and I'm screaming at my past self wondering why the hell she went that far."
"Don't be so hard on yourself, Lo.." Marcel says in a warm tone, smiling over to her, "Trust me, Elijah didn't take that argument to heart."
"Speaking of Elijah.." Marcel wears an up to no good smirk, "You know Gia you met the other day?"
"Yeah she seems really sweet, and.." Lola stops speaking as she catches the look on Marcel's face which causes her to match the same grin as a lightbulb goes off in her mind, "You're joking. Elijah and Gia?!"
"Nah.." Marcel chuckles leaning back in his seat, "Well..it wouldn't surprise me if something did eventually happen. Elijah took Gia under his wing and when you see those two around each other.."
"Oh my god.." Lola breathes out as she laughs slightly, "We need to make this happen. I haven't even seen them both in the same room but it just makes so much sense."
She glances at Marcel with a mischievous look, "We haven't played matchmakers in so long, I think we need to take on that title again."
Marcel's smile soon faded when he heard footsteps approach his loft and a voice that he quickly came to loath, "So much for a catch up just us two.."
Lola frowns not realising yet what Marcel meant until she looked towards the door seeing her two brothers letting themselves inside. She narrows her stare at Damon first, noticing purple, green and gold beaded necklaces around him, "What's with the beads?"
Stefan rolls his eyes, nudging Damon, "This dumbass couldn't help but join in as a band went past in the street."
"You're just jealous because the hot one gave me these and not you." Damon gives his brother a mocking grin as he wraps his finger around some of the beads.
Marcel raises a brow soon seeing Hayley and Aiden walk in behind them both. He gives her a sarcastic look, "Bonding with the distant relatives, huh?"
"Shut up." Hayley scoffs rolling her eyes, she sits on the arm rest of the chair Lola is on, "The hair one I can handle but the other one.." She sighs dramatically, "Lo, I don't know how you do it."
"Why do you think I moved here a hundred years ago? I can't deal with it." Lola mocks, giving Damon the middle finger when he glares at her before her attention goes towards Aiden standing beside Hayley, "Who's this?"
"Aiden." The wolf smiles, holding his handout to Lola, "It's nice to finally meet you."
Lola flashes a faint smile taking his hand, "Ah, you're Aiden." She lets go of his hand, her eyes soften up at Hayley, "No luck with Jackson?"
Hayley sighs, shaking her head before Marcel speaks up, "So, you brought Junior Varsity? You know, I'm getting a little tired of you using my place as a den for wayward wolves."
"That's funny.." Damon's tone was full of sarcasm, shrugging as he glances around the loft, "This place feel very similar to those abandoned places you find strays.."
Marcel chuckles in a mocking way, his tone turned condescending, "How's that girlfriend of yours back in Virginia? Still hates your ass?"
"Alright, alright.." Stefan sighs stepping in front of Damon as the older Salvatore's eyes darken with rage towards Marcel, "We've all talked and plan to take down Finn Mikaelson today. And given the stories you told me the other day, about how he treated your vampires..I figured you'd wanna be in on the bloodbath."
Marcel sits up in his seat, his interest piques, "I'm listening."
"Well.." Aiden clears his throat, sitting on the couch opposite to where Lola and Marcel sits, "It's not gonna be easy. He's surrounded by a pack of juiced-up wolves. He doesn't have a weakness."
"He does, actually!" Marcel's smile beams as he takes his phone out of his pocket, leaning back, "And, I have her on speed dial! He's got a thing for Cami."
"I've already told Cami no." Lola gives her close friend a displeased look, "We're not getting her involved in anything else, Marcel."
"Well, she's got this thing about people telling her what she can and can't do!" Marcel ignores Lola's demand, smirking as he holds his phone to his ear, "I trust you, of all people, understand."

Cami didn't hesitate to agree to Marcel's plan by setting Finn up so they could grab him. Just before she went to a meeting with him, she gave Lola the keys to her apartment and told Lola to wait there until Cami was done.
The O'Connell was sharp on her feet and managed to make it seem like she was romantically interested in Finn which ended with her inviting him to a jazz club later tonight. With a box of dark objects under one arm, Cami walks back into her apartment to see Lola laid across her couch.
The heretic sharply shuts the book that's in her hand, smirking over to Cami, "You are a sly dog, Cami O'Connell. Some of these novels are very..detailed." With pursed lips she looks at the back of the novel she's holding, that was more erotic than she imagined Cami to own,ย "I can understand why you had it hid behind all the brainy books..it almost feels real."
"I gave you my key to just wait in here." Cami rolls her eyes but still smiled, placing the box of dark objects on the counter, "Not going through my things."
"Oh come on. I'm like a magnet for this type of stuff..but humour me." Lola's tone was full of tease as she stands up from the couch, stepping closer to Cami, "Is this what you imagine doing with someone in particular? Maybe..Marcel? Oh! Or Scott!"
She laughs seeing Cami's expression change, almost flustered at the mention of the ripper, "Come on..I see the way you two look at each other. The forbidden stolen glances and in your mind you're tearing each others clothes off andโ" She pauses, exhaling a heavy breath before looking back down at the book again, "Can I borrow this?"
Cami scoffs softly, taking the book out of Lola's hands and placing it back on the shelf, "Don't be dramatic, it's hardly the Kama Sutra."
"You're right, it's not." Lola shrugs, glancing around Cami's apartment, "Although I am pretty confident you've got a copy of that here somewhere too."
"I thought you'd be less brazen now your humanity is back." Cami teases with a smirk as she opens up the box on the counter.
Lola shrugs, completely unfazed by Cami's teasing as she steps closer, "I haven't been that way since I was six and I threw Damon's wooden horse into the quarry." Her interest piques when she looks into the box on the counter, smirking, "Well, well..what do we have here? You have dark objects?"
Cami raises an inquisitive brow towards the heretic, watching as Lola picks one of the dark objects out the box, "You've seen these before?"
"I was there when some of these were made. Kol and myself mingled with a bunch of witches back in the day." A hint of a smile graces her lips, nostalgia brightens her eyes as Lola looks through the box and hit with so many memories of her time with Kol over a hundred years ago, "Neither of us could do magic so we had them create these so we could use magic in a different way."
With the history that Cami has heard regarding witches and vampires and also witnessing it herself, she was shocked hearing Lola's memory, "Witches were willing to work with you both back then? I mean, the whole divide between witches and vampires has been going on forever, right?"
Lola hums out, agreeing with Cami's point before she shrugs, "They were willing to help us both." She flashes a teasing look towards the O'Connell, "Maybe me and Kol were just really nice."
The laughter was impossible to hold back from the O'Connell's lips hearing Lola's words before she rolls her eyes, "They probably made them out of sheer uncomfortableness being around two vampires who are worse when they're together."
If it was anyone else that stated anything of that sort to Lola's face with the confidence Cami did, they wouldn't have the chance to say anything else but it was always different with Cami. Lola raises a brow, crossing her arms and leans against the counter, "Why would I make them uncomfortable?"
Cami gives the Salvatore a knowing look with a teasing grin, "It probably has to do with your reputation."
Lola acts oblivious, pursing her lips as she jumps up to sit on the counter, "I have a reputation?"
"People would probably say the way you present yourself, your own methods in getting things done is.."
"Dangerous?" Lola finishes off Cami's sentence as her eyes sparked with an unapologetic gleam, hopping off the counter and closing the gap between herself and Cami. The corners of the heretic's lips twitch up into an amused smirk as she hears Cami's heart rate picking up, "Do you think I'm dangerous, Cami?"
There was a part of Cami that wanted to blame the non existent fault with her thermostat to explain the heat that suddenly rushed to her cheeks..instead of it being Lola in close proximity to her. Cami clears her throat, turning away from Lola, starting to pace around her apartment, "Considering you and Marcel are constantly saying you don't think it's a good idea I see Finn on my own..I have an idea."
"You can cloak yourself into anyone, right? Do that tonight." Cami states her plan with confidence that makes Lola's interest grow more and more, "Finn won't recognise you and you'll be able to stay close by if anything does happen. Marcel has already said if you're okay with this then that's what we'll do."
"I'll admit, that's clever. So..who do you want?" Lola clears her throat, standing up straight and stretching her arms out until she starts to speak in a strong British accent that takes Cami by complete surprise, "Rich girl Anna, who ran away from home. Desperate to see the world using daddy's trust fund." She doesn't even bother to hide the smug grin as she begins to circle around Cami, "I'm thinking maybe..dark hair and brown eyes with a sweet little innocent smile. Or.."
"Poor little Cleo.." Lola begins to effortlessly start speaking now in an Australian accent, "Running from her tortured past after leaving her psychotic drug dealing boyfriend in the middle of the night. Maybe a red head.."
Cami shifts slightly in her spot, attempting to cover the flustered look on her face, "Maybe something a little less dramatic."
"Oh, wait. I know." Lola snaps her fingers and cloaks herself into a stunning brunette with tattoos that seems incredibly familiar to Cami, "She's just arrived from New York after spending one too many nights on the wrong side of the bridge; but has this really, really, really sexy accent."
Cami couldn't figure out what flustered her the most, how quickly Lola was able to cloak herself as someone with little effort or the woman she cloaked herself as. The same bartender from the night both Lola and Cami met, saying the exact same thing Cami said to Lola regarding the bartender, "You're not funny."
The familiar laugh of Lola's fills Cami's apartment as she turns back to her usual self, "I actually think I'm hilarious. I think we will go with the sexy New Yorker bartender."
โโคโ
"Look, back in Mystic Falls this creepy Mikaelson got killed by some dumbass Quarterback." Damon scoffs pacing around Marcel's loft as everyone within come up with different suggestions on how to take down Finn, "It's easy to kill him..which I will happily do by ripping his head off."
"We can't kill him." Stefan pinches the bridge of his nose as though this is the millionth time he's explained this to his brother, "He will just body jump."
Damon shrugs, not bothered in slightest by Stefan's constant argument, "Would still satisfy me a little ripping the current head off him."
Marcel glances over to Hayley, Josh and Aiden who look just as fed up regarding Damon's presence than he is. He rolls his eyes, "I would say you've left your brain in Mystic Falls but from the stories I've heard..you've never had one."
"Vincent's head stays on." Everyone turns their attention to the door as they hear Cami's voice to see her walking in with Lola alongside her, "He'll have a hard time answering questions without it." She places down the box full of dark objects on Marcel's coffee table.
"Sweet, it's a big box of dusty old junk." Josh mocks in a sarcastic tone looking down at the contents of the box, "We're saved!"
"They're dark objects my uncle left for me." Cami laughs softly at Josh's little quip before gesturing down at the box, "I've been cataloging them according to Kieran's notes. As far as I can tell, these can be used against witches specifically."
Marcel pulls a pair of shackles attached to a chain out of the box, and when Lola sees them, she smirks, "Huh, kinky. Certainly different to the ones I'm used to.." Lola automatically glances over to her brothers who look at her unamused as she realises what she just said out loud and she flashes an innocent smile, "Forget I said that."
"Ah, I remember these!" Marcel chuckles holding the shackles up, "A hundred years ago, the Human Faction waged a war against the Voodoo Queens. They had a traitor spell these manacles. Slap 'em on a witch, they can't do magic as long as they're on."
"If any of you ever try and use these against me, I swear.." Lola points to every single person within the loft as she narrows a stare, "I won't be the lovable girl you all know."
"Loveable?" Stefan frowns, nudging his sister, "Since when?"
Lola playfully glares at her younger brother, nudging him back before Josh sighs, "Alright, we're not gonna get the Handcuffs of Doom on him while he's surrounded by a werewolf entourage."
"You couldn't think of a better name for them, Justin?" Damon mutters in a bored tone, causing Lola to frown over to Stefan who sighs shaking his head as though to mentally tell her to not even bother asking.
"We can just lure him away." Aiden shrugs, sounding confident, "I can do that."
Hayley's gaze softens over towards Cami, "Cami, if we do this, you're the bait. Are you sure you're okay with that?"
"I'm sure we can come up with a different plan if you don't feel up to this." Stefan says softly towards the human who starts to look a little nervous, "It's understandable if you're not."
Cami glances around everyone's faces before landing on Lola's who gives her a reassured nod before Cami nods herself, "Make it look convincing. The guy's really smart."
โโคโ
There was a lot of things that Lola has seen in her life that gave her immediate discomfort. However, right now..seeing her older brother dance in the middle of the street in the French Quarter, that went right to the top of her list.
Both her and Stefan watch their brother with more beads around his neck, clutching hold of a cocktail as he dances along to the cheerful jazz music..both wondering why they thought it was a good idea they had him back out here again.
Lola scoffs turning to look away from Damon and focuses on Stefan who leans against the brick wall outside of the bustling preservation hall that Cami is inside of with Finn, "Look, I get he's upset about Elena but this is the fifth time he's done this today."
Stefan sighs heavily agreeing with his sister's remark before he watches a smug looking Damon walk over to the group that wait in the darkened alley way, "We're about to grab Finn and you are dancing in the middle of the street?"
"We're in New Orleans, brother." Damon shrugs gesturing back out to the lively French Quarter, "It's weird if you're not dancing in the middle of the street when a band marches by. It reminds me of when we were in Havana, Lo."
"What?" Lola shows no emotion whatsoever towards her brother, "When I was there and you gatecrashed by being an annoying brother? Then proceeded to be an even bigger jackass and piss off two of my closest friends?" Her tone turns more high pitched and sarcastic, "Oh yeah! I loved it."
Damon frowns over to Josh when he hears the young vampire laughing, "Something amusing, Justin?"
"Lola being in Havana." Josh shrugs as he smiles glancing between the three Salvatores, "You know..like the song." He pushes off the brick wall, his eyes brighten with amusement as he begins to sing in a hushed tone, "Her name was Lola..she was a showgirl.."ย
Lola bites the inside of her cheek to stop herself from laughing at Josh's singing whereas Damon's frown becomes even more evident making Josh's smile drop as he clears his throat, "Never mind."
Damon points over to Josh but looking over to Lola with an annoyed look on his face, "Why is he here again?"
"Damon, shut up!" Lola harshly snaps out of nowhere as though her frustrations overspilled within, "You can be a dick anywhere else but you're not a dick in this city. Not to anyone I care about. Understand?"ย
Her hands go against her hips stepping away from Damon, she glances out of the alley way to the busy streets of the French Quarter, making sure no one was looking, "Actually..you know what.."
She twists on her heel and without giving Damon a second to realise what she was about to do, Lola twists her wrist as she magically snaps Damon's neck making him drop to the concrete floor.ย
Stefan's eyes widen looking down at his unconscious brother before giving Lola an unimpressed and exasperated look, "You can't be serious."
"I am stressed.." Lola breathes out a heavy sigh of relief, running her hands through her hair before gesturing down at Damon unconscious on the middle of the alley floor, "That was my stress relief. I've had a headache ever since he came here."
"Thank god." Josh too breathes out a sigh of relief, his eyes widening as he notices the two remaining Salvatores looking over to him, "No offence, I know he's your brother, it's just.."
Josh's shoulder's slump as he scoffs looking down at Damon, "He keeps calling me Justin and last time I checked, I'm not from a nineties pop group with ramen hair."
There was a part of Josh that felt ridiculous feeling intimated by the two remaining Salvatores but it didn't help when they both glanced over to him with matching blank expressions until they simultaneously started to laugh at his remark.
"He's funny." Stefan chuckles patting Josh on the shoulder before glancing over to Lola, "I'll go check Hayley is ready."
Both Lola and Josh watch as Stefan walks further into the dark alley before Josh smiles in an almost nervous way to Lola, almost wanting confirmation that he is one of the people Lola cares about, "So, youโ"
"Don't ruin the moment, Josh." Lola cuts him off before giving him a playful look. She gestures to Damon still unconscious on the floor, "Come on, help me put him in the trunk."
Lola and Josh both pick Damon up and carry him over to Josh's car. Lola pops the trunk open before they place him within it. She breathes out a sigh closing the trunk with Damon inside, "Take him to the church with you and I'll deal with him later. If he wakes up before we're done, you have my permission to snap his neck again."
"We're like the real life scooby doo gang." Josh smiles awkwardly as he laughs, "Just..more badass."
Lola admired Josh's spirit, she always has. She gives him a half smile, patting his arm, "Maybe wait until this plan actually goes ahead before you say that again."
"You ready?" Hayley breathes out, hands on her hips as herself and Stefan approach the duo.
Lola nods before cloaking herself as the New Yorker bartender instantly as Josh's eyes widen, "Woah..how did you.."
"Get to the church and meet Aiden there.." Stefan instructs Josh who quickly nods, "We'll follow along soon."
The plan was for Hayley and Stefan to wait outside in the alley way as Lola heads into the preservation hall cloaked as a bartender. As she slyly gets in, taking an apron from behind the bar, she grabs a tray full of beers and begins to walk through the busy crowds within the hall.
"Well, my mother and I are quite close.." A voice catches Lola's attention which is when she sees Cami at the back with Vincent Griffiths aka Finn Mikaelson as he speaks with pride on his face about his mother, "She made so many sacrifices for us. Now, anything she asks seems negligible in comparison."
As Finn speaks, Lola and Cami lock eyes. Cami didn't show any reaction at first but her eyes softened ever so slightly, feeling more at ease knowing Lola was inside of the hall with her. She turns her attention back to Finn before Lola makes her way through the crowds.
She pretends to accidentally trip and drops the tray of beer close to Finn and Cami, as agreed with the O'Connell earlier that day. Lola gasps, thick New York accent comes through being cloaked as the bartender, "Oh my..I am so sorry.."
"Yeah, you should be.." Finn glares over to her, annoyed that he and Cami, mainly Cami, have been soaked with beer.
"Hey, it's okay.." Cami places her hand against Finn's shoulder before smiling softly over to Lola, "Don't worry about it. I'll just go get cleaned up. You stay here, okay?"
Cami flashes a smile at Finn who hesitates for a moment before nodding over to Cami. He watches as she walks out of the crowd with Lola one step behind her. He continues watching as Lola grabs a bunch of napkins and helps Cami dry off the spilled beer.
"You okay?" Lola asks quietly as she gets a quick and discreet nod off Cami, "Hold my hand."
Just as a group of people block Finn's peripheral of the two women, Lola mutters invisique as she and Cami rush out of the bar for the second part of the plan to take place. Lola uncloaks herself, getting back to her usual appearance as her and Stefan hide in the shadows.
Concerned, Finn heads outside to look for Cami after noticing her being gone. But when he leaves the hall, he hears Cami screaming and turns down the alley. He finds Cami flat on her back, being attacked by Hayley who is bending over her.
Hayley purposely glows her hybrid eyes in Finn's direction, the only thing visible beneath her hood before she jumps up to the roof of the opposite building. Hayley distracts Finn by whistling which gives Stefan the chance to sneak up behind Finn, picking Cami up as Lola cloaks them all and they rush off to St Anne's church.

Grief is a fickle thing. It's always there however there are moments where it doesn't overcast your mind as much as usual. As Lola stands in the midst of St Anne's church, her grief and trauma comes straight back to her.ย
Her hands tighten into fists as she tries to calm herself down, in her mind hearing her and Klaus' screams from the last time she was in this church when all of the darkness took over on that fateful night.
The warmth of Stefan's hand pulls Lola out of her dark thoughts before he sights softly, "This is the first time, isn't it?"
"The first time I've been in the church where I gave birth and then had my throat slit open on the alter?" Lola mutters in a monotone voice acting like it was the most casual thing someone could've been through before her posture relaxes, "..yeah."
"Come here." Stefan practically whispers wrapping his arm around Lola and pulling her closer. He presses his lips against the side of his sister's face, "I'm proud of you."
Lola smiles leaning into her brother's hold, enjoying the small moment of peace they share before it's interrupted when Damon gasps sharply, waking up from his neck snap. He sits up straight on the pew he was put on, looking around before his darkened glare fixates on Lola's unbothered one, "Before you even start with your bullshit, I'm calling that my payback."
"Payback for what!?" Damon snaps quickly standing up and storming over to his siblings.
"When you broke my neck in Mystic Falls." Lola deadpans with a simple shrug, completely unfazed by her brother's outburst.
Damon exhales an exasperated breath, "That was like a million years ago, Lo!"
"So was you killing Dominic and yet.." She flashes him a harsh smug grin, "It's still satisfying to bring it up."
"Well, he bought it." Aiden's voice interrupts any sort of argument Damon was going to snap back at Lola. They all look over to Aiden and the rest of the group as Aiden continues, "His locator spell will bring him here without the bodyguards."
Hayley sits beside Cami on the steps below the alter as she bites into her wrist and allows her blood to drip into a communion cup. Cami laughs breathlessly watching Hayley, a rag clutches against her bloodied neck, "I always thought having a woman's mouth on my neck would be more erotic. At least it was back in college when.." Cami looks up at Lola and the two other Salvatores walk towards them all. Lola gives Cami a look making Cami shake her head, "Never mind."
Damon smirks leaning towards his sister, "What exactly happened when you visited Adrianna at Harvard again?"
"Shut up." Lola snaps in a hushed tone pushing her brother away from her.
Josh and Aiden walk away from the group towards the rows of candles to put them out. Cami drinks Hayley's blood out of the cup, sighing to herself, "Where's Marcel?"
"He's looking for Davina." Hayley informs glancing around the church with a shrug, "He heard she was back in town."
"Overprotective-dad stuff?"
Hayley flashes a tight lipped smile as she nods, "If you want to call ripping Kol Mikaelson into a thousand little pieces protective dad stuff, then, yeah. That's it."
"Sorta regret not tagging along to that now." Lola mutters under her breath, getting a little too impatient to have her moment with Kol after everything that's happened between the two.
It wasn't long before the final stage of the group's plan was on track to take place. Everyone hid in the darkness of the church as Aiden waited outside to greet Finn. After a short while, the doors of the church burst in as Finn throws an unconscious Aiden through the doors. Josh, unable to help himself, vamp-speeds toward Aiden to make sure he's okay, not noticing right away that Finn is storming down the aisle after him. Josh freezes in fear as Finn spreads his arms wide, lighting all of the candles and turning on all of the lights of the church.ย
Josh stands in a defensive position, but Finn easily snaps his neck with a flick of his wrist before continuing to walk down the aisle, "Camille! CAMILLE!"
Hayley appears out of nowhere behind Finn and tackles him to the ground, "First, I'm going to kick your ass. Then, I'm going to take my pack back."
"Your pack?" Finn laughs with malicious as he stands to his feet, "Last I checked, your pack was blindly following me."
"You wanna talk about following?" Hayley says in a patronising tone, "How do your mother's boots taste?"ย
Hayley kicks Finn in the face, splitting his lip, but he continues to laugh, "What have you done with Cami?"
Hayley laughs sarcastically and shrugs, so Finn telekinetically throws her down the aisle while he gets to his feet, "Hybrids die by losing their head or their heart. And, given the choiceโ"
Finn screams out, clutching the side of his head as Lola comes into view giving him an aneurysm with magic. Her eyes darken as her protective instincts immediately come into play over Hayley, "Careful how you finish that sentence, mama's boy."
"Oh well, even better." Finn inhales a sharp breath, fighting against Lola's spell as he laughs, "The little pet that has been following my siblings around for centuries. How does it feel, Lola? Knowing they'd drop you in seconds if given the choice."
"You're talking about yourself, Finn.." Lola mocks with a smug grin, "It's a little arrogant, don't you think?"
"You may be a heretic and strong, but you're not stronger than me." He begins to cast a spell as he makes a fist with his hand and thrusts it out toward Lola as he walks toward her, "Le specto tre colo ves bestia! Le specto tre colo ves bestia!"
Lola's brows furrow as she clutches her chest when she starts to spit up blood. The front of her shirt starts showing a blood stain as he tries to magically rip out Lola's heart. However, Finn's spell quickly stops when both Stefan and Damon rush out of the shadows.ย
Stefan pushes Finn to the ground, stomping his foot against Finn's leg with force as the sound of Finn's bones breaking echo through the church as he screams out, "Touch my sister again and I'll kill you myself." The youngest Salvatore threatens.
Finn grunts as he feels hands pulling him up, his eyes widening as he sees a sinister smile against Damon's face, "Fancy seeing you here, creepy Mikaelson."
Before Finn can do any sort of magic to protect himself, Damon punches him with force and throws Finn down the aisle of the church as Stefan helps Lola up from the ground. Cami comes out from behind the alter, slamming the shackles onto Finn's wrists.
He gapes up at her, stunned at everything that's just happened. There was a twinge of betrayal in his eyes looking up at Cami who responds with a look of indifference, "You would have done the same thing to me, Finn."

Things felt different in the compound tonight as Lola stands on the balcony staring out onto the streets of New Orleans. It almost felt like it was close to peace..regardless of Finn Mikaelson currently chained downstairs with Kol soon to follow.
"I'm curious.." Lola instantly smiles hearing the familiar warm voice approach her from behind. She turns to see Elijah stepping towards her, "Was the rather large blue bow also part of this new attire? Have I missed a fashion trend while I've been occupied?"
Elijah's teasing nature is one of the things Lola has missed the most. She looks over to him wearing the suit she had hung up for him, waiting for him to awaken which she even finished off with a blue bow against it.
Elijah smiles softly at the heretic seeing her eyes turn glossy as she smiles over to him. He steps closer, opening his arms, "Charlotte."
Lola rushes over to him, wrapping her arms around him in a tight embrace, "Elijah, I am so sorry."
Elijah nods, closing his eyes as he takes in the feeling of serendipity of this moment. He sighs, his hand going against the back of Lola's head, pulling her closer, "I know."
"No, Elijahโ"
"Charlotte, it's okay." The Salvatore's attempt to speak was interrupted by Elijah's calming voice. His hands place against the sides of Lola's face, his calm stare locking with her guilt ridden one, "I am the one who should apologise for the part I played. I should never have involved myself in regards to Hope's nursery. It was my mistake. Not yours."
Lola and Elijah have always shared a special bond, a strong yet platonic bond. They never judged each other, nor did they ever truly abandon each other. Throughout the years even when Lola was hiding from Klaus, they would keep in contact. Each other needing the other by their side at different moments throughout the years.
"I've missed you." Lola says in a soft whisper, smiling broadly at the Mikaelson, "I've missed having the suited angel on my shoulder."
"By some miracle I may have slightly missed your suit related whit." Elijah chuckles quietly as his thumb wipes away a stray tear falling down Lola's cheek, "Are you okay?"
"You're asking me if I'm okay?" Lola laughs breathlessly, "I should be asking you."
Lola pulls Elijah in another tight embrace, "It doesn't define who you are, Elijah. Remember that." Elijah smiles faintly, his arms tightening ever so slightly around Lola as though deep down he needed to hear those words.
As Lola opens her eyes and looks over Elijah's shoulder, she sees Klaus walking in as he smiles towards her and his brother, "I trust that you have no doubt been up to creating chaos today, love."ย
Lola and Elijah both pull away from their embrace as Klaus joins them both on the balcony, his arm wrapping around Lola's waist, "Was Damon talking about himself in the third person throughout his entire visit here? Adding uncle in front of his own name."
"No, uhโ" Lola's smile fades, shrugging her shoulders glancing between both Mikaelson brothers, "I never told him about Hope. Stefan and I agreed that we don't tell him until the time is right. It's too risky."
Klaus frowns softly, his hand running through Lola's hair, "Are you okay with that?"
"It doesn't matter what I think." Lola flashes the smallest hint of a smile as she shakes her head, "All that matters is keeping Hope safe. Damon will understand, he won't be angry about that."
Klaus nods gently, a heavy feeling on his chest appears as he thinks about what has happened today with his real father. He's already told Elijah what's happened, but needs to tell Lola too but feels as though right now it's the best moment.ย
The hybrid sighs heavily before looking over to his brother, "How do you feel?"
"The worst has past." Elijah looks down at the streets below them before fixing his suit slightly, "Though, I suspect the nightmares are far from over."
"Well, gather your strength. Both of you." Klaus' arm around Lola's waist tightens as he speaks, "After the message I sent Mother tonight, I expect hell-fire to rain upon us imminently."
Lola frowns over to Klaus, wondering what he could mean but before she has chance to ask, Elijah speaks up in a serious tone, "We need to make a move before she strikes."
"Well, actually, moves were made while you were sleeping." A wide smiling Marcel steps into the room looking over to the trio.
"It's true that I have been creating chaos today, along with Marcel." Lola matches the same proud smile as Marcel as she steps into the room and stands beside him looking over to two equally confused Mikaelsons, "However, it was the good kind of chaos today. Marcel and I each left something for you in the ballroom. You're welcome."
Klaus and Elijah both glance at each other before saying nothing and walk out the room as Marcel mutters, "You're welcome." Before he and Lola give each other the same smirk and follow Klaus and Elijah.
Klaus steps in first, opening up the double doors with Elijah soon following behind. Klaus' brows raise up in amusement seeing both Kol and Finn chained up against the staircases.
"Kidnapping?" Kol drawls out in a patronising tone, "That's a rather unpleasant way to begin a family reunion!"
"Well.." Klaus says slowly as he grins towards his two brothers, "Wait until you see how we end it."

A/N: Just another warning..the next part will contain mentions of sexual and physical abuse so please do not read if these topics makes you uncomfortable. Xxx
Some people survive and talk about it. Some people survive and go silent. Some people survive and create. Everyone deals the unimaginable pain in their own way and everyone is entitled to that, without judgement.
Tragedies do happen. We can discover the reason, blame others, imagine how different our lives would be if they didn't occur. But none of that is important; they did occur and so be it. From there onward we must part aside the fear that they awoke in us and begin to rebuild.
"It must've been nice having your brothers here." The blonde bartender gives the heretic a warm smile as they walked around Jackson Square. She was happy when Lola text her asking if she was up for one of their little walks, knowing Lola had something on her mind, "You seem happier."
"Yeah, I am. I can't even remember the last time we were like this, you know?" Lola laughs, glancing down at the beignets in her hand before out at the crowds around them, "Acting like actual siblings. Sure, there's arguments, maybe a little neck snap but..it was real. More real than it has been between us since.."
Lola sighs deeply as she thinks about her and her brother's past, "Since we were humans."
Cami can see the smile against Lola's lips but how her eyes show sadness as she thinks about her brothers, "Don't focus on the time it's took to get you all like this. Focus on that the three of you are in a good place, no matter on how long it took."
"I know, I know.." Lola passes Cami one of the beignets as they continue to walk, "How are you? After tonight?"
"I'm okay.." Cami wears a soft smile as she nods, "I know I was adamant about being able to do the bar on my own but I felt at ease knowing you were there inside with me. Even if you cloaked yourself as the bartender from Harvard."
The authentic laugh from the heretic brought a warmth of the O'Connell automatically making herself smile, "I had to fight real hard to not drag Finn out of there myself, andโ" Lola pauses when her phone starts to ring inside her pocket, "Oh, hold on."
As Lola pulls her phone out of her pocket and dismisses the call, Cami notices as something falls out onto the floor. She crouches down, frowning as she holds up a beermat with writing on it that's Italian, "What's this? Il segโ"
"Il segno del fratello noioso." The perfect pronunciation of the Italian wording that Lola said sounded like smooth honey to Cami.
Lola smiles faintly taking the beermat out of Cami's hand and looking down at it, "It means annoying brother's token. In the nineties when I was in Mystic Falls, Damon was begging me to stay in town but I had no interest in doing so. This was our agreement. Three times he would be able to use it to get me back there."
"The idea of staying in your home town never interested you, has it?" Cami assumed correctly. She has mentioned Lola's hesitation about her hometown before and seeing the pained look on Lola's face yet again was proof of that, "Is there a reason for that?"
"Several." Lola mutters under her breath, she closes her eyes briefly without even realising her nails were digging into the palm of her hand.
She exhales a heavy breath relaxing her fingers, slowly fluttering her eyes open again, "Before the nineties, the last time I was there was when we all turned in 1864. When our father killed us all and Stefan forcing the two of us to drink blood to transition. I didn't really ever have a good experience in that town ever since I was six years old but the last few years leading up to becoming what I am.."
A humourless breath falls from Lola's lips as she sits on a nearby bench in the midst of the Square, "If Damon knew some of the things, I'd like to think he'd understand why I'd never want to go back there. But I kept a lot of it to myself and even now, I've never told a soul. Not Adrianna. Not even Klaus."
"You shouldn't let the past stop you from doing anything, Lola." Cami's tone was warm and soft as she sat beside the heretic, "You know you can always come to me and you can tell me anything. I would never judge. Even if it's something like Scott ate your last beignet."
Cami smiles hearing a soft laugh from Lola, she takes Lola's hand giving her a reassuring squeeze, "I'll always be here to listen."
Lola drew in her bottom lip between her teeth, she could feel her chest tightening at the thought of what happened that night but feeling the reassuring squeeze from Cami subsided the darkness, "There was a fair in town, the year before we turned. Stefan had met one of the loveliest girls I've ever met while we were there, so I barely saw him. I just stayed there so I wasn't at home with our father."
She exhales a humourless breath, staring down at her hands against her lap, "Looking back now I'd have rather been at the hands of my father than stay at that fair."
"Lola, if you don't want to talk about this.." Cami leans closer to Lola on the bench, her eyes soften towards the heretic, "That's fine. I can see already that whatever happened is painful for you. If you're not ready to share thisโ"
"No, it's fine." Lola says in a quick yet soft tone before she inhales sharply, "I've never said any of this out loud so maybe it will help."
Lola closes her eyes, as though she is fighting out the words to begin her story, finding it harder than she may have originally thought, "There was a man who tried a few times to speak to me. He seemed friendly at first.." She exhales a shaky breath, opening her eyes with a sorrow expression, "Until he wasn't."
She wears a faint smile as she thinks back to the brighter parts of that day, that all included her brother, "Stefan didn't want me to walk home on my own in the dark so I waited for him but I couldn't find him anywhere. I just figured he had already gone home."
"It wasn't far so I just walked home on my own..I could see my home when hands grabbed my waist, pulling me backwards." After a brief hesitation, the air between both Lola and Cami sharpened and turned icy as Lola's voice breaks, "The fingers felt like they were piercing into my skin as the other hand went across my mouth to stop me from screaming."
"It was the same man from earlier that day. I tried to fight him off but he was so strong. He kept saying this was what I deserved. This is what happens to ungrateful girls." Lola's voice was trembling as she felt the warmth of tears falling down her cheeks, "I felt like I was going to be sick when I felt his hand pulling my dress upโ"
"Lolaโ"
"I managed to get away." Lola replies quickly interrupting Cami, she sighs wiping away the fallen tears as she stares out in front of her, "By some miracle. Before he could do anything else. I tried to tell my father what happened and he blamed me. Said it was my fault and it's just what men do."
A humourless breath falls from the heretic's lips as she stares down at her hands on her lap, "Giuseppe Salvatore controlled everything I did and if I dared try and steer away from the control.." She bites the inside of her cheek as she inhales sharply thinking back to every single time her father would lay a hand on her, "He got into my head that what happened wasn't bad and that I should never speak about it. So I didn't. Until now."
Cami's heart felt like it shattered into a million pieces, her lips parted and tears filling her eyes as she listened to Lola's words. She reaches forward, taking Lola's hand into hers, "Lola, he was a grown man and you were just an innocent girl. You didn't ask for that, you were just trying to walk home. What that man did to you had nothing to do with who you are as a person, it wasn't your fault."
"I never knew his name." She practically whispers, the broken look in her eyes meets Cami's sympathetic one, "But I'll never forget his face or that voice. But, it's all in the past. It was a hundred and fifty years ago, it's just something of the past."
She takes a deep breath, covering up her pain with a smile like she always does, "Thank you, Cami. For listening, it means a lot to me."
"Of course." Cami's tone was soft and sweet, squeezing Lola's hand, "I'm here every step of the way to be here for you and listen to anything and everything you have to say."
Later that night, Lola remained in her and Klaus' bedroom as he dealt with his brothers. She wanted to stay awake to speak to Klaus, feeling like they've barely spoken in so long..desperate to just be in the comfort of the man she loves. However, after speaking with Cami and letting out all of the pent up pain she's had bottled up for over a hundred years, Lola felt a little bit more peace than she's felt in a long time.
She felt exhausted and tense from the last few weeks and the conversation earlier tonight made all of the pent up frustration seem meaningless. With a soft sigh, Lola lays down against her and Klaus' bed, with the intention of just resting her eyes but for the first time in a long time..she fell asleep with ease.
The tension and irritation Klaus felt after attempting to convince his brothers to leave their mother's side vanished as he walked in his bedroom. Lola lays across their bed fast asleep, it was obvious she had intentions to stay awake waiting for Klaus to come into the room; the opened grimoire beside her as she still wears the clothes she's had on all day. A smile graces the hybrid's lips as he lowers himself onto the bed beside Lola, pulling a blanket over her. He softly moved the stray hairs against her face before pressing his lips against her forehead.
He didn't know what Lola had spoken about tonight and he wouldn't know it for another year. Not until he was in the same town as the man who hurt Lola over a hundred years ago.
โโคโ
ugh, charmille.
i think we ALL know who lola and cami were talking about and lemme just say..the hatred for that man will just grow and grow AND GROW.
however..further down the line this topic will be getting brought up again but i will put a warning when it does. i don't know if i'd ever feel comfortable writing the actual scene lola mentioned but if i do, i will make it an extra chapter in my one shot book so then it's easier for people to skip it if they feel the need to..Xxx
idk why i found this chapter so hard to write butttt the next chapter, let's just say..
ahem..there will be smut..DETAILED smut.
(the most detailed smut i have ever written)
so that's something for you all to look forward to xoxo
