Chapter 3

Twisted Sisters

Lola's eyes slowly open at the faint sounds of moment from downstairs. There's one split moment she thinks she's still in Mystic Falls which is until she realises the bedroom she's in right now isn't the one she shared with Klaus back home.

Darkness seeps through, the only source of light is the moon shining through. She didn't even realise she fell asleep not long after her phone call with Damon and Stefan, completely exhausted from everything that's happened over the last few days.

She descends down the staircase to see one room lit with candles. Growing curious, Lola walks further to the room to see Klaus adding more candles onto the table.

Noticing Lola's presence, he turns around and smiles over to her, "You weren't supposed to see this yet."

Lola smiles over to him as she walks further into the room, "What's the occasion?"

"Does one need an occasion to do something like this?" Klaus takes Lola's hand, pulling a chair out for her before sitting opposite her.

Lola narrows her eyes towards him, her eyes shining with mischief, "You arranging things like this is what got us into this mess in the first place."

She clears her throat and shifts slightly in her seat, already finding the next thing she is bringing up awkward, "Speaking of, we've barely spoken since we both got here. There's an elephant in the room which is apparently going to get bigger as the months go by and we should really speak about it."

Without even thinking her nails start digging into the palm of her hand as she continues to grow anxious which worsens when it looks as though Klaus isn't listening, instead he takes his phone from his pocket as a message pings.

"Nik," Lola practically whispers his name but still makes him look up from his phone, "Are you okay about everything that was said?"

"I am fine." Klaus assures as he leans over the table, pouring Lola a glass of water, "Things will get better, love. I promise you that."

"Better in what way?"

"We won't have to stay in this dusty home much longer." Klaus gestures around the room they're in, which is partly still surrounded by dust, "I am going to make it my goal for us to be back in our home. I'll continue acting like an old friend of Marcel's, gain his trust, figure out how he has created the empire he has and take it from him."

Lola sits back in her seat, narrowing her gaze at Klaus, "Then what?"

Klaus wears a smug grin as he looks over to her, "I'll be king. We'll have everything back that was taken from us a hundred years ago. We can say goodbye to Mystic Falls for good and make this city our home again."

Lola glances down at her hands on top of her lap, she twists around her ring before glancing around the room, "Where's Elijah?"

Klaus' expression turns cold, "Were you not listening to what I've just been saying?"

Lola shrugs her shoulders nonchalant, "Well if you're planning to take New Orleans from Marcel I'd have thought Elijah would be part of this plan."

"You think wrong." Klaus throws his fork onto his plate, "Elijah has left."

Lola laughs slightly as she shakes her head, "Elijah wouldn't just leave."

"It seems the two of you aren't as close as you once where." Klaus flashes a forced smile as he shrugs, "Elijah has left, must have slipped his mind to tell you."

He stays sitting in his seat, glancing down at his plate before he scoffs and begins to walk out of the room. Lola turns to watch him storm out, "Where are you going?"

"I've lost my appetite."

Lola follows him out into the foyer of the house, "I ask where Elijah is then you storm out of the room like a child? What's the matter with you?"

Klaus scoffs as he starts putting on his jacket, glaring over to Lola, "I try to organise something nice for you then you disregard all of it!"

"I only asked where Elijah is!" Lola snaps, "Of course I appreciate what you've done, but you weren't exactly a hundred percent at that table."

"Meaning?" Yet again Klaus' phone goes off, they both look at it and Lola scoffs.

Lola gestures towards Klaus' phone in his hand, "That."

She sighs as she steps closer to him, her hands find a place against Klaus' cheeks, "Look, I know that you've got your heart set on taking back this city and I am going to be with you every step of the way. But-" Klaus rolls his eyes and moves away from Lola and starts to walk towards the front door, "We can't keep avoiding the other situation going on in our lives."

Klaus pauses in his step after opening the front door, he looks over to Lola, showing no expression, "What situation?"

"The situation where we are having a baby, Nik!" Klaus' face practically drains all of its colour at Lola's outburst. Hearing her say that out loud made it more real and he isn't ready to deal with that.

Klaus rushes out of the home but Lola soon follows, "Where are you going?" As Lola steps fully out of the home, Klaus vamp speeds away, "Nik!"

Lola stares out into the darkness, feeling more alone than she already did.

โ€”โœคโ€”

THREE WEEKS LATER:

Hayley stands at the front of the house as trucks pull in that hold everything that Lola has arranged to come from Mystic Falls. If she was going to be staying here for the foreseeable, Lola wanted her comforts with her. Which included her grimoires, although she can't perform magic while Sophie has the spell on her, she hopes that there may be an answer within her grimoires to figure out how to stop this kind of spell.

The last few weeks have been difficult, Klaus is mainly spending his time in the quarter along with Marcel. It's been hit and miss between him and Lola, they'll be back to normal one minute but then if Lola speaks about the pregnancy or Elijah, Klaus starts to build up his walls and blocking Lola out. She knows Klaus has done something to Elijah but has stopped bringing it up, not feeling mentally strong enough with the constant arguing between them both.

A week ago was the last time Lola spoke to Stefan, he explained how ghosts came back in Mystic Falls and Damon had werewolf venom in his system. The lucky thing was that Klaus was already on his way to town to start the organisation of what they were bringing back from Mystic Falls and what they weren't. During that call Stefan went on to explain he was wanting to get out of Mystic Falls which Lola strongly agreed with. She's told him before it was time he thought about what he wanted and she was proud that he was finally doing that.

However, there's something that's hanging in the back of her mind that something has happened to her little brother because he hasn't been answering her calls for the last week. When Lola has spoken to Damon and expressed her worry, Damon would go on to say that Stefan just needed space from everything and everyone.

Hayley grabs the box in the truck that Lola requested and she walks back into the house, "Hey, Lo?"

"Yeah?"

Hayley sighs as she walks up the stairs towards Lola's room, "Do you wanna help?"

Lola continues laying in her bed, barely moving from it for the last few weeks. She scoffs, "Not really."

Hayley rolls her eyes, "Okay." Hayley walks into Lola's room, she frowns over to Lola who is eating in bed, "I thought you were feeling sick?"

Lola shrugs as she glances over to Hayley, "If I don't eat, I'll throw up."

Hayley frowns over to her, "But I thought eating made you throw up?"

"It does."

"So why are you eating?"

Lola rolls her eyes and glares over to Hayley, unamused, "Because if I don't, I'll throw up!"

"So..." Hayley drawls out as she places the box on the bed, "You'll throw up either way?"

Lola shrugs, "Probably."

Hayley scoffs as she sits on the edge of the bed, "That doesn't make any sense."

Lola rolls her eyes as she places the food on the nightstand and lays back down, "Neither does me being pregnant with a hybrid baby and yet here we are!" She glances over to Hayley who stares at her confused, "Stop pulling your dumb face."

Hayley sighs as she moves closer towards Lola, "Still no word from Stefan, huh?"

Lola clears her throat as she looks away from Hayley, "No."

Hayley looks over to her with a sympathetic look, it was obvious that the no contact from Stefan was getting to Lola and was adding to how anxious Lola was already feeling, "I get that you're worried about Stefan not getting in touch with you. But maybe he just needed space from everyone."

Lola laughs dryly, "He rang me, Hayley. He rang me after everything that happened, after Klaus got there to cure Damon, after they stopped all the bad shit from happening. He told me that he was going to leave Mystic Falls to get away from Damon and Elena. A fresh start for himself. Stefan told me he would keep in touch with me, he even said he would come here first to see me before he started his loner adventure." Lola fixates her stare on the wall next to her, knowing if she looked over to Hayley she would completely break, "He wouldn't completely cut ties with me."

"Just don't think of the worst case scenario straight away." Hayley says softly, trying to reassure Lola, "There could be a reasonable explanation for why he's not returning your calls."

Lola scoffs, rolling her eyes, "I didn't take you in all those years ago and take you under my wing for you to be this stupid. You don't know Stefan."

"You're the one who thought I got pregnant by Tyler." Hayley remarks, "So, who's the stupid one?"

Lola glares over to Hayley, "Still you."

"Well, here's the box you were wanting." Hayley smiles awkwardly at Lola until she hears knocking downstairs, "I'm going to go and do anything else if it means I won't be insulted anymore."

Lola sits up in the bed and pulls the box closer to her, when she opens it up it has some of Klaus' sketchbooks inside, "Wait, this is the wrong-" An old red sketchbook catches Lola's eyes, a sketchbook she hasn't seen in over a century.

"What did you say?" Hayley pops her head around the door towards Lola.

"Nothing." Lola whispers staring down at the book, she clears her throat and smiles over to Hayley, "It's fine."

Lola waits until Hayley walks back out of the room and starts to flick through the sketchbook when she finds the piece she was wanting to find. Her fingers trace over Klaus' name in the bottom corner with the date 1890 underneath. The drawing is of her beloved horse she had back then named, Beau.

โ€”โœคโ€”

FLASHBACK, New Orleans - 1890:

It's dawn in New Orleans as Lola rides through the fields on her horse, Beau. Something she often does early on a morning. Unknown to Lola she gallops straight past a gentleman who is also out on a horse ride, "Miss!"

Lola glances over her shoulder to see the man now trying to catch up with her. She smiles slightly as she makes the horse speed up. The man grows worried as he notices the horse is not slowing down, but speeding up, "Are you in trouble?" His eyes widen when he sees Lola approach a tall fence and still not slowing down, "Careful!"

With ease, the horse jumps over the fence and continues to gallop a few more meters before slowing down. Lola looks over her shoulder to see the man on the other side of the fence looking over to her stunned making her laugh slightly before riding further away.

Lola's posture relaxes as Beau slowly walks through the park, she feels content as she watches the sun rise.

"Enjoying your victory lap?"

Lola eyes widen as she looks to her left to see the same gentleman from early who has now caught up with her, "Shit."

The gentleman smiles over to her as his horse and Beau walk alongside each other, "I assure you this time you won't be allowed a head-start."

Lola scoffs, narrowing her glare at the man, "Oh, so you think you can chase after a stranger to then tell said stranger what they can and cannot do?"

He laughs slightly before smiling broadly over to Lola, "I've heard of sore losers but never a sore winner. Losing races to strange women in parks at this early on a morning could cause quite a stir with my ego."

Lola softly pulls the reins making Beau stop as she raises a brow towards the man, "Is that what that was? A race?"

"Was it not?"

Lola smiles mockingly over to him, "Does one not need actual competition for a race?"

The man locks eyes with Lola, he looks away for a moment to try and hide his blush before smiling over to her, "Your whit is admiring."

Lola shrugs her shoulders as she squeezes her calves against the sides of Beau for him to walk on, "I don't see it as whit, I see it as merely speaking the truth. You are no competition in horse riding."

The man scoffs as his horse also walks on, "You don't even know me."

"That's true." Lola purses her lips as she glances over to him and his horse, "However, I can tell by your horse that it would not be able to beat my horse. Plus that rather large ego of yours may add to the weight that your horse is carrying."

The man comes to a halt, he looks over to Lola, almost offended at her assumption, "I shall-"

Lola's brows shoot up in a teasing manner, she smiles over to him, "Ah, it appears you may be the sore loser after all."

He looks over to her, a little stunned until he picks up on Lola's joking tone making him laugh, "In the rare instance it occurs, I have no difficulty in admitting if I am in the wrong or not. Allow me to introduce myself. Thomas Wetherby."

"I'll be on my way, Mr Wetherby." Lola pulls the reins for Beau to turn around to head the direction they came from, "Don't mistake my horse's speed as an excuse to lose against him again."

Thomas watches as Beau begins to gallop once more away from him, "You never gave me your name."

Lola turns her head slightly, shouting back to him, "I know I didn't!"

โ€”โœคโ€”

Klaus storms over to the front door in an irritated manner, growing tired of the constant knocks and no one else answering the door. His mouth gapes open as his shoulders slouch to see an unamused looking Adrianna standing in the doorway, "Adrianna. What are you doing here?"

Adrianna pushes past Klaus and steps further into the house, "I've came to find out why my best friend is avoiding my calls."

Hayley sighs with relief as she steps half way down the staircase, "Finally, you made it."

Klaus glares up at Hayley and then back to Adrianna, "Have I missed the newsletter that has gone round claiming that this house is suddenly a sorority?"

Adrianna flashes a fake pet lip as she pats him on the shoulder, "You can stop acting like you haven't missed me, Klaus."

Klaus watches as Adrianna walks up the stairs and follows Hayley further up, he scoffs before slamming the front door shut and walking back into his office.

Hayley gestures towards Lola's bedroom, "She's in there."

Adrianna steps closer to the room but turns around to see Hayley staying at the top of the stairs, "You're not coming in?"

Hayley shakes her head, raising her hands up in defeat, "I've had my head bitten off too many times to go back in there."

Adrianna watches, her brows furrow in confusion as she watches Hayley walk into a different room. She sighs before opening Lola's bedroom door to see her laying with her back to the door flicking through a sketchbook.

Adrianna clears her throat and leans against the doorframe, "Are you seriously having a siesta without me?"

Lola's eyes widen as she throws the book onto the floor before turning round to face Adrianna, "Ade? What are you doing here?"

"You've been avoiding me, Lo." Adrianna closes the door behind her, she crosses her arms against her chest as she walks towards Lola, "What's going on?"

Lola shrugs as she pulls the covers over her further and turns her back to Adrianna, "Nothing's going on. Everything is fine."

"If everything was fine you wouldn't be laying in bed at 2 in the afternoon and wearing sweats." Adrianna sits on the edge of the bed, "We'd be in the nearest bar having tequila."

"I don't feel up for that right now. I said to you weeks ago that it wasn't a good idea you came here."

"That was before you decided to ghost me for weeks. Come on, Lo, I'm not going to listen to you when you tell me to not come and see you. Because that means that something has happened." Adrianna shifts closer to Lola, "Spill."

Lola sighs as she sits up in bed, resting against the headboard, "It's nothing."

Adrianna's mouth gapes open as her eyes widen, "Wow."

Lola looks at her confused, "What?"

Adrianna laughs slightly, gesturing towards Lola, "Your boobs."

Lola glances down before pulling the covers over her, "Why are you looking at them?"

"How can I not?" Adrianna exclaims, she pulls the covers down from Lola, "You need to give me the make of your new bra."

"Okay, can we not talk about this?" Lola's face twists with disgust as she lifts the covers up once more, "It's creepy."

Adrianna rolls her eyes, "Don't act like I've not seen it all before. What's up with you?"

"There's nothing up with me. There are just problems going on that will only be resolved if I lay down." Lola moves down the bed to lay back down, "So if you don't mind, I'm going back to laying down."

Adrianna stands up from sitting on the bed, she raises a brow towards Lola before ripping the covers fully off Lola and the bed, "Get up. Everyone has problems." Adrianna steps over Lola and stands fully on the bed behind her, "So get your ass out of bed." She softly nudges a stunned looking Lola's back, "Now! Move!"

"Okay!" Lola exclaims as she stands up from the bed, "I'm up!"

Adrianna narrows her eyes at Lola's hand that goes straight to her stomach, her eyes widen, "Lola Salvatore." Adrianna jumps off the bed, she points down at Lola's hand, "What is that on your finger?"

Lola's face twists with discomfort before her other hand presses against her mouth and she rushes into the adjoining bathroom. Adrianna goes to follow her but Lola shuts the door straight behind her. Adrianna stares at the closed door, dumbfounded for a moment before her attention snaps to Hayley walking into the bedroom,

"That is why she stays laying down." Hayley moves Adrianna away from the bathroom door before knocking lightly, "Lo, it's me. I'm coming in."

Adrianna's mouth stays gaped before clamping it shut and giving Lola the privacy she will want right now. Adrianna walks down the stairs and finds Klaus' office where he is sitting at his desk shuffling through papers.

Klaus glances up at her, "What?"

Adrianna shrugs her shoulders as she purses her lips looking around the office, "What?"

Klaus rolls his eyes and continues to look through his papers. Adrianna pulls out the chair opposite Klaus and takes a seat on it. She watches as Klaus doesn't even bother to look up again so she sighs dramatically as she rests her feet up against his desk.

Klaus' jaw tightens before he scoffs, slamming his papers onto the desk, "Adrianna!" He glares over to her with a tightlipped smile, "Is there something where you require my assistance?"

Adrianna purses her lips as she shakes her head, "Nope, don't think so."

"So what might your purpose be other than annoying me with your heavy breathing?"

"I was just waiting for you to tell me what's been going on since you all got here." Adrianna looks over to Klaus who's face turns cold making Adrianna shrug, "Well, Lola won't tell me. She's sitting up there, hardly leaving that room so Hayley tells me. So something has obviously happened." Klaus ignores her and walks behind her pouring himself a drink. Adrianna watches as he does so and sighs heavily, "Yeah, you know it really is a problem."

Klaus rolls his eyes and harshly puts his glass back onto the drinks table, "What?"

Adrianna turns to face him fully, taking her feet off his desk, "Everyone thinking they can hide the fact that my best friend is pregnant."

Klaus whips around to face Adrianna, "You know?"

Adrianna scoffs as she stands up, "Of course I know, the heartbeat was the first thing I heard when I got here." She leans against his desk as Klaus passes her a glass of bourbon, "Let's not talk about the fact Lola's boobs have doubled in size and she's eating everything in sight but then throwing it up five minutes later. Plus, she is being extra bitchy than normal, who'd have thought that would be possible."

Klaus narrows his stare at her, now looking confused, "But she didn't tell you?"

Adrianna shakes her head, "No, but...she knows I know."

Klaus' lips part about to quip something but soon clamps them shut before looking even more confused than before, "So you know that she knows that you know?"

"Mhm." Adrianna smiles broadly over to him, "She'll tell me when she's ready to be happy about it. Congratulations...I think."

Upstairs, Hayley and Lola both walk out of the bathroom, Hayley puts the covers back on the bed as Lola lays back down. Hayley sighs as she opens up one of the windows to let in some fresh air, "You can't keep this from Ade. Sooner or later it's going to be pretty obvious."

Lola eyes fill of anger as she glares over to Hayley, "Are you calling me fat!?"

"What? No! Just-" Hayley sighs as she sits on the edge of the bed next to Lola, "Why are you keeping this from her?"

"Because the more people we tell, the more I have to realise what's happening is actually real." A shaky breath falls from Lola's lips as she closes her eyes for a second before looking over to Hayley with glossy eyes, "I'm not ready to admit that all of this is real."

"I'd offer to make you something to eat but you seem pretty miserable already." Both of the attentions go to the door where Adrianna is standing, "What's going on?"

Hayley stands up from the bed, "I'll give you both some space."

"No." Lola takes hold of Hayley's hand and looks at her with a pleading stare, "Stay, please."

Hayley nods and sits back down as Adrianna sits on the opposite side of the bed. Lola sits up slightly and looks over to Adrianna, she smiles slightly, "There's so much I haven't told you, Ade."

Lola can't help but allow the tears she's been holding for weeks flow. Adrianna pulls Lola in an embrace, "It's okay. You don't have to tell me if you're not ready to tell me." Adrianna pulls away from the hug, she wipes away the stray tears from Lola's cheeks, "Although there is one thing that stands out."

Lola looks over to her with wide eyes but Adrianna takes hold of Lola's left hand and smirks, "I can't believe you never told me you got engaged! I'm so happy for you!" Adrianna's smile drops slightly as she notices Lola isn't sharing the same kind of glee, "You're happy about this, right?"

"Of course I am." Lola smiles down at the ring, "Of course, even though he's a massive pain in the ass right now I love him."

Hayley scoffs as she stands up from the bed, "He has been a dick, Lo!"

Lola closes her eyes as she sighs, "Hayley..."

"No, Adrianna needs to know everything!" Hayley snaps, interrupting Lola, "Because Klaus clearly isn't going to be there by your side for everything! He's acting as though you don't even exist!"

Adrianna watches as Lola slowly opens her eyes, her entire posture is weak. Adrianna looks over to Hayley, "Hayley. Give us a minute."

Both Adrianna and Lola watch as a reluctant Hayley walks out the room and closes the door behind her. As Adrianna looks back over to Lola, Lola can read her face straight away. Lola narrows her eyes at her, "You already know."

Adrianna takes hold of Lola's hand, squeezing it slightly, "I can hear it, Lo."

Lola rolls her eyes as she pulls her hand away from Adrianna, "I wish people would stop saying that. It's all well and good that you can hear this apparent heartbeat but I can't."

Adrianna's eyes soften, "So you're not ready to admit that it's real?"

Lola sighs heavily as she shows a hint of a weak smile, "Exactly."

She doesn't understand exactly what Lola is going through but Adrianna knows that Lola feels more at ease when she is in control of things. So to be in the dark as much as she is about this pending pregnancy, Adrianna can understand why Lola is acting this way.

Adrianna stands up from the bed and walks towards the door, "I'll be back."

"Where are you going?"

Adrianna smiles over to Lola as she opens the door, "I'm going to get something that may help you feel more in control over this situation."

โ€”โœคโ€”

Lola anxiously paces around the bathroom as Hayley and Adrianna stand watching her. Hayley keeps glancing down at her phone on the vanity, watching the countdown.

Lola continues to pace and picks at her nails before glancing over to the pregnancy test on the vanity, "How long do these tests take?"

Hayley looks down at the timer, "There's only a minute left on the timer."

A shaky breath falls from Lola's lips as she nods, "Okay."

"Lo, look at me." Adrianna takes hold of Lola's shaky hand, "I just want you to know that I love you. You're my sister, you're my person. You're never going to be going through anything on your own when I'm here."

Lola smiles softly at her best friend, nodding as she pulls Adrianna in a tight hug, "I love you so much."

They both break away when they hear the timer on Hayley's phone go off, Hayley glances over to them both, "It's time."

Lola takes a deep breath and steps closer tot he vanity before quickly turning her back, "Actually, you know what? I can't look at it. I can't. Someone else look for me, please."

Hayley glances over to Adrianna who nods at her to take a look. Hayley walks over to the vanity and picks the test up before looking over to Lola and Adrianna and a solum look, "It's negative."

Lola turns around to face Hayley, looking shocked, "What?"

Hayley looks down at the test once more, "It's negative."

Lola's breath gets stuck at the back of her throat and she looks over to Hayley with a face full of mixed emotions, "Oh. Well, that's-" Lola clears her throat, "That's good, you know?" Lola flashes a fake smile as she looks over to an saddened Adrianna, "Clearly whatever spells those witches put on me has made it all an illusion for you vampires. I said that to Elijah!"

Lola laughs nervously, "That is really great news. I, uh-" She stares down at the ground for a moment as she feels the warmth of tears forming, "Yeah, that's a relief. This was the way it was supposed to be, right?"

"Well..." Adrianna whispers, she smiles over to Lola, "Then great."

Lola smiles back at her before her brows pull inwards as the tears start to fall. Hayley grabs Lola a tissue and passes it over to her which Lola takes, "Thank you." Lola laughs awkwardly as she wipes away the tears, "Why am I crying over this? How can I be upset over something that was never real?"

Adrianna steps closer to Lola, taking hold of one of Lola's hand while she soothingly rubs Lola's back with her free hand. Lola clears her throat and glances over to Hayley, "It's negative?"

A hint of a smile appears on Hayley's face as she shakes her head, "No, it's positive."

Lola's eyes widen, "What!?"

"It's positive. I lied about it before." Hayley passes Lola the pregnancy test, "Now you know how you really feel about it."

Adrianna scowls over to her, "Hayley!"

"It was reverse psychology!" Hayley exclaims, she gestures over to Adrianna, "You taught me that!"

Lola laughs in a breathy way as she stares down at the two lines on the test, her hands begin to shake even more as the tears that fall now become tears of joy. She continues smiling as she narrows her eyes over to Hayley, "That was a risky little game."

Adrianna's eyes become glossy, her smile beams over to Lola, "Are you really gonna do this?"

"Yeah." Lola nods as she looks back down at the test, before glancing between Adrianna and Hayley, "Yeah, I'm going to have a baby." Her breathing becomes laboured as her smile widens, "I'm going to have a baby."

A/N: ADRIANNA IS BACK๐Ÿ˜ฉ
I've missed her sm. Do we want more of Adrianna in this story? Maybe even have her move to New Orleans...๐Ÿซข??

Also the flashback in this chapter is the start of everything that leads to 1892 what Lola and Klaus briefly spoke about in the previous book. I do have a few flashbacks in mind about it so was wondering if people would like a FULL chapter of just flashbacks or if you want them spaced out and added onto actual chapters? Let me know!

Thank you for reading!!
