Chapter 29

Welcome To My Dark Side

Throughout Lola's life she learned the hard way that she won't always be ready for what life will throw at her. She will never be adequately prepared. As a child, she was taught how to behave as quintessential as a young woman may be. As a young adult, she was taught that not every polite gentleman has pure intentions. As a woman, she taught herself how to build up those tall walls within to never reveal how she truly feels. As a vampire, she taught herself how to play with fire without getting burned.

Everyone has a weakness, even Lola Salvatore. She had several. No matter how hard she tried to keep those weaknesses hidden, it was inevitable some of them would surface. There wasn't anything she could've done to stop one of them leaving in the middle of the night and having no idea when they would return. Hope took a piece of Lola's soul with her on that fateful night, it made the heretic feel lost. Having no idea where her daughter was, nor having Hope in her arms made Lola feel incomplete. Her humanity was holding on by a thread, she knew others could see she was close to completely turning it off. At one point she was determined that wasn't going to happen, until another one of her weaknesses was leaving her.

"I can stay if you need me to." The hesitation that Stefan felt was all that was shown across his face as both siblings step into the garage.

"I can't be selfish anymore." Lola tries to hide the pain she feels on the inside, she always has. It's the trademark of being an older sibling. It pained Lola that her brother was leaving New Orleans, they've been reunited for a month and yet it just feels like seconds went by. But being the older sibling, she knew what she had to do that was best for Stefan, "We're more similar than we sometimes realise which is how I know you need to have your own space to deal with everything. I'll be okay. Just like you will be."

"All you need to do is call, text, I don't knowβ€”" Stefan shrugs his shoulders, glancing around the various cars within the garage knowing if he looks at Lola in this moment, he won't want to leave, "Smoke signals or some witchy note and I'll be back here without even blinking."

"I know you will." Lola takes hold of one of Stefan's hands, staring down at their intertwined hands with a hint of a smile across her lips. She had forgotten the last time she wore a genuine smile, they are all so forced now.

Lola goes to speak once again but Stefan beats her to it, "And I know you are the same." His hand goes to the back of Lola's head, pulling her in a warm embrace. Just for a small moment, everything seemed normal as both of them felt relaxed in the other's arms, as though nothing changed. Until they break away and Stefan once again sees the empty look in his sister's eyes, "Do you have the thing?"

Reaching into her pocket, Lola reveals a black cord bracelet, with three stones in the middle; Hematite, Obsidian and Vitality, "Whenever you wear this you won't be found through locator spells." Taking hold of Stefan's wrist, Lola wraps it around before she wears a faint smile, "Same as the one I made for Hayley."

Leaning against his car, Stefan's face darkens with sadness and guilt, "I feel helpless not being able to do anything about Hope. I doubt anyone will, but at least when I wear this no one will be able to track me down regarding her." He flashes an sweet smile, holding his wrist up showing the bracelet, "Plus it won't harm to be hidden from Caroline for a while. There is the option of Klaus compellingβ€”"

"No." Lola sternly cuts her brother off from finishing his sentence, she shakes her head, "That's not an option. I don't want that for you. There are spells out there that can reverse compulsion and I've heard it hurts like a bitch, so I'm not risking you going through that." She watches as he places his bags into the trunk of his car, without realising her nails start digging into the palm of her hands, "Are you gonna be okay?"

As Stefan closes the trunk, the scent of blood fills the air. He frowns to himself, picking up it's vampire blood. Glancing over to Lola, his heart sinks to see her staring to the side, digging her nails into the palm of her hands, not even realising her new found strength her nails pierce into the skin.

"Lo, hey." Stefan rushes over to his sister, his hands gently go against her arms. She jumps out of her dark thoughts, looking up at him completely oblivious at the small pools of blood forming in her hands. Stefan's brows knit with concern, carefully taking hold of Lola's hands, "Are you gonna be okay?"

Lola follows Stefan's concerned gaze down to her hands and it's only then she realises what she did. Clearing her throat, she wipes the small amount of blood against her shirt before turning her back on Stefan which makes him sigh, "I know you've got Klaus and Elijah but what ifβ€”"

"I'm not telling Adrianna the truth." Lola correctly assumes what Stefan was going to say, when times were bad previously, Adrianna was there to help her through it. Lola runs her hands through her hair, continuing to have her back to Stefan, "I'm not telling any of them. Outside of these compound walls it's just you and Hayley and it will stay that way for the foreseeable." She takes a deep breath, shoulders slump before wearing a fake smile as she turns on her feel to face Stefan once more, "They'll all understand once everything has settled. But right now, the rest of them think what the entire city thinks. What about you? Any thought on where your hero hair is going to take you next?"

Avoiding topics, one of Lola's specialties. It's been that way ever since they were kids, but she never did it out of spite. When they were children, Stefan was a curious boy, he always questioned the different cuts or bruises that he'd see against Lola's skin and she would avoid the truth in that instant, not wanting to scare or worry him.

He knows she is doing it again because once again she doesn't want to scare or worry him. But that doesn't stop him from feeling that way. It's not his choice on whether or not Lola tells Adrianna the truth, he would never try to control that. Adrianna has called so many times to the point where Lola's phone is constantly off and that resulted in Adrianna trying to contact Stefan. It was obvious why Lola was avoiding Adrianna, she's one of the very few Lola finds it impossible to lie to and Adrianna knows the heretic well enough to know when she is lying.

"I don't know," Stefan drawls out, not wanting to try and bring up Adrianna again. Truth be told he had no idea where he was going to go next. But he couldn't go home, even if he wanted to a magical barrier had now surrounded Mystic Falls and no supernatural being could enter, "Somewhere normal..ish."

"You know I hate goodbyes." Lola smiles as she blinks away tears that started to form in the corners of her eyes. Clearing her throat, she takes hold of Stefan's hands, "Please, look after yourself and you know if you need me, you can come back here. This is your home too and it always will be."

"I know." Stefan's voice is a low whisper, "I love you, Lo."

She didn't want him to see the broken look in her face anymore and the way it intensified saying goodbye to him. Lola pulls Stefan in one last hug, "I love you too."

β€”βœ€β€”

Lola was the type of person who needs alone time. She feels deep, she thinks even deeper. Her alone time allows her to figure out her mood, where her energy is and how to take each step in life. When Lola is quiet, there's a reason. She is sorting through all the chaos in her mind, and all the madness in her heart.

Though with that being said, there were moments in her life when she didn't want to be alone. She would always joke how Klaus knew when she would get to that point before she even knew herself. As the full moon rises in the sky, this night was one of those scenarios.

Anxiety built up more and more within Klaus' being, this was the first full moon since that fateful night one month ago. His fears heightened, not knowing what was to come with the wolves within this city using the moonlight rings tonight.

Stepping into the room, a part of his anxious stature vanishes as he sees Lola already in the room. She stands in front of the table with candles spread across, chanting a spell under her breath. Klaus closes the gap between them both, wrapping his arms around her waist, pressing a soft kiss against her shoulder, "How are you feeling?"

Lola immediately relaxes in Klaus' hold, forever feeling less tense when she's in his arms. Her arms go against his own, she leans her head against his, "I feel better now."

Lola spins around in Klaus' hold to face him, wrapping her arms around him. He glances over Lola's shoulder as his interest piques, "What were you doing?"

"Making you this," Lola twists around, taking hold of a glass and holding it out towards Klaus which he takes. "I just need to add one more thing." Taking hold of a small blade from the table, Lola pierces her finger with it, allowing her blood to drop into the contents of the glass, "I don't know if it will work but it's sort of like a protection spell. I thought it might help with tonight."

As the conversation turns to the reality of tonight, the dark cloud forms above Klaus and the anxious feeling comes flooding straight back into his system. "Drink it," The soft, calm tone from Lola brings Klaus out of his feared thoughts, "There's not much time until the moon is at its apex."

The strong taste of Lola's blood masked the strong herbal drink that Klaus finishes in one. His eyes narrow, watching as Lola walks towards the sofa and with a heavy, pent up sigh she sits on the edge of it, "Are you okay?" Klaus' question makes Lola jump slightly, too busy being engrossed in her own thoughts. Klaus' brows are joined with concern, his hand rests against Lola's thigh as he sits beside her, "You seemβ€”"

"I'm fine." Lola quickly dismisses Klaus' concern, her hand rests on top of his own. She watches his stare move to the half full glass of blood on the coffee table before his stare goes back towards the heretic, "I'm trying to feed in moderation. I don't know if it's because my witch side is present this time round but the blood lust is stronger."

His eyes seem to be protecting thoughts he doesn't want to speak out loud. Klaus would always feel smug at how well he knew Lola and in this moment he knows her now more than ever. Lola is a strong minded individual, she has more self-control than a lot of people do. Klaus understands that now Lola is a heretic, there is a stronger urge for blood but he has confidence that Lola will overcome that; just like she's overcome many things.

The blood lust that Lola feels right now is what is keeping her humanity intact, it was obvious to pick up on. Blood makes it easier to let go and by Lola practically rationing herself, she was able to still be in control. This was the last piece that was keeping her humanity and it was clear that she was determined to keep hold of it for as long as she could.

Klaus covers the concern within with a smile, edging closer to Lola on the sofa with a hint of tease in his eyes, "Do we have a third ripper in our rather unorthodox family?"

"No. I think we have enough with the two we've got already." For the first time in what feels like forever, a genuine, broad smile graces Lola's lips as she laughs at Klaus' jest. There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as the infectious laughter Klaus fell for over a hundred years ago and without even realising, Klaus wears the same genuine, broad smile. Lola sinks further into the sofa, running a hand through her honey hair before frowning towards Klaus whose smile hasn't faded, "What?"

"It feels like a lifetime since I've heard you laugh." Klaus threads his hand through Lola's hair as he leans closer, softly pressing his lips against hers. He can feel Lola's smile against his lips before pulling away, lips hover against hers, "I love you."

"I love you." Lola's hand cups Klaus' cheek, bringing his lips towards her own once again. They had barely left each other's side throughout this month and they had no intentions for that to stop.

A bright light flashes through the window as the lights above the pair flicker. Within seconds, thunder crashed through the skies and heavy rain hits against the windows. Breaking apart from Klaus, Lola glances towards the window just as an electrifying surge of lightening ripples through the night's sky, "There's a storm coming."

"We'll get through it." Klaus wraps his arm around Lola, pulling her closer to him. He didn't just mean the literal storm happening in this exact moment in time but also metaphorically regarding the storm between themselves and everyone around them, "We always do."

Once the storm is over, no one will remember how they made it through. How they all managed to survive, they won't ever be sure whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain, then they come out of the storm, they won't be the same as they were before. That's what storms are all about.

Hope you enjoyed that little teaser for season two. The first chapter of it will be out soon, I did want it to be out 24th Jan with that being The Salvatore Sister's anniversary but I'm fairly confident I won't get it up in that time. But it will be as soon as I can <3

There's some extra little sneak peaks further down on what's to come so enjoy <3

❝ Draw the cat eye sharp enough to kill a man,
You did some bad things, but I'm the worst of them.
Sometimes I wonder which one will be your last lie,
They say looks can kill and I might try.
I don't dress for women,
I don't dress for men,
Lately, I've been dressing for revenge. ❞
