Chapter 58
Into The World
Lola slowly opens her eyes, trying to adjust to her surroundings. She feels a throbbing sensation from the corner of her eye, she flinches when she puts her hand against it making her instantly remember what happened.
Her eyes focus to a figure standing at the doorway, she groans as she tries to sit up on the bed she's been passed out on, "You hit me with a log?"
Kol shrugs his shoulders as he throws the stake up in the air, "Technically, it's the white oak stake."
"It's wood." Lola deadpans, she glares towards Kol as she stands up from the bed, "Therefore, it's a log. What the hell is wrong with you?"
Kol sighs as he takes a step closer to Lola, "Would you believe me if I said this was my way of protecting you?"
Lola laughs in a half-suppressed manner, as she steps away from him, "I know you're full of shit." Lola then realises where she is, she furrows her brows, glaring over to Kol, "How long have I been down here?"
"It's hard to say."
"What do you mean hard to say?" Lola snaps, "You're the one who trapped me down here! Let me out."
"No."
"Let me out, Kol! Where's Nik? What have you done to him?" Kol's blank expression and ignorance just fuels Lola's rage even further as she steps closer to him pushing him against his chest, "Oh so now you're ignoring me? You are such an asshole, Kol! I'd have never done anything like this to you! Now you're just gonna stand here and taunt me?"
Kol bows his head slightly, a sympathetic stare on his face, "I can't let you out, I'm sorry."
"You're sorry?" Lola echoes, "You're the one who knocked me out then locked me in here! All because of your childish nightmares about Silas!"
"I can assure you they're not nightmares." Kol closes the gap between the pair, he has a faint smile on his face as he takes hold of both of Lola's hands, "Sooner or later you will realise that me doing this to you is because I care about you. You're just like a sister to me, Lottie."
Lola pushes away from Kol, her eyes full of hurt and betrayal, "You are nothing to me." She seethes, "As far as I'm concerned, you're dead to me. I'm never going to forgive you for doing this." She runs her hands through her hair as she turns away from Kol, taking a deep breath, "And another thing, I-"
She turns around to see Kol is no longer standing in the room, she looks around confused. She never heard him open or close the door, so what the hell is happening?
"The only person you can blame for you being here is yourself."
The hairs on the back of Lola's neck stick up, her eyes widening in fear at the voice behind her, "No, this isn't real."
"Look at me when I'm talking to you, Charlotte!"
The bellowing of the voice makes Lola flinch, tightly shutting her eyes before she slowly turns around. It's like something stabs her in the heart when she slowly opens her eyes to see the one man she used to truly fear standing in front of her, "Father."
A twisted grimace is on Giuseppe's face as he steps closer to Lola, "I've made a lot of mistakes in my life time, I will openly admit that. But I have to confess, allowing your mother to continue her pregnancy with you has got to be the biggest mistake I've ever made."
"Father of the century." Lola scoffs gesturing over to her father, she walks towards the door and starts an array of loud yet panicked knocks, "Kol! I don't know what the hell you've done but I'd rather not have visions of my dead father, open up!"
Giuseppe stands behind Lola, gripping hold of her hair making her wince in pain. He pulls her head closer to him, "I knew before you were even born you were going to be an abomination to our family. The reason our family was broken." He pushes Lola away from him, making her fall against the wall and onto the floor as he laughs spitefully, "Look at you, you continue to be nothing but a waste of space. There was a moment I contemplated throwing Lillian down the stairs, just so it meant you would never have been brought into this world."
Lola laughs slightly, she wipes away the blood running from her nose as she stands up, "Well sorry to burst your little psychotic bubble, but I am here. How does it feel, Giuseppe? To see I'm finally who I am supposed to be. All of your plans mean nothing anymore."
Giuseppe angrily steps closer to his daughter, slapping her across the face with such force she falls against the bed, "Your friend Kol should have killed you. I for one am not a big fan of vampires, as you know, but at least I would have respected him for ending you permanently."
"You've resented me before I was even born." Lola snaps, holding onto her cheek, "Then you continued to resent me throughout my childhood. I was just a child! I needed my father."
"How could I have ever been a father to someone as worthless as you?" Giuseppe towers over Lola, his words full of hatred, "I wasn't going to allow your darkness seep into my life."
Lola grits her teeth as she stands up from the bed, closing the gap between her and Giuseppe, "You are the darkness!" She clenches her fists so tight her knuckles become white, her nails digging into her palms, "You and mother were the darkness, not me! You both took away a part of me when I was just a child!"
"It would have been the end of this family if we were going to continue to allow you to be a disgusting witch!"
Lola looks over to her father, dumbfounded. She can't help but laugh, "Do you even hear yourself? You are the reason our family came to an end! We weren't even a family to begin with!" Giuseppe stays quiet at Lola's words, she tries to resist the urge to blink because once she does the tears will fall and she fears they won't stop, "You made me, Damon and Stefan feel like dirt on your shoes just because you didn't know how to be a father. You beat mother just because you didn't know how to be a husband. You are the darkness!"
Lola turns her back on her father, resting her hands against the door as she takes a deep breath. Until she can't help but smile, a condescending smile as she faces her father again, "You spent your life hating on vampires but want to know the truth, father? You're just like one. You just went round all of us one by one sucking the spirit out of us all! You enjoyed being like that, didn't you? Made you feel good about yourself. You wish I wasn't your daughter? So do I!" Lola screams, now letting the tears fall, "You hate me? So do I! I don't know what the hell this is but get out of my head!" Lola tries with all her strength to open the door while hitting as hard as she can against it, "Kol! Open the god damn door!" She gives in, resting her forehead against the door, closing her eyes as her voice becomes a whisper, "Open the door."
"No, you're not dying, not today! Do you hear me?"
Another familiar voice comes in to play. Lola frowns as she opens her eyes, standing back in shock to see the door she was leaning against is now the cold tunnels that are underneath the Mystic Grill. She turns around to see Damon cradling her dead body after being staked by Connor, Stefan kneeling beside Damon as they both scream out for their sister.
Damon sits up slightly, still gripping onto his sister, he begins to shake her, attempting to wake her, "No! We aren't done fighting yet, you still need to kick my ass a couple more times! Open your eyes!"
Lola steps backwards, her breathing becoming erratic not wanting to relive this moment until she hits against something, someone.
She screams out in pain as her father stabs her with a stake, her balance becomes weak as she falls into Giuseppe's arms. He tightly grips hold of Lola's arms, leaning closer to her ear, "No one is coming to get you because no one cares about you. They've mourned you once, they'll do it again."
Lola gasps as she wakens on the bed within the basement room, her hand immediately going to her chest where she felt her father stake her but there's nothing there. She looks around frantic, trying to find something, anything that could help her get out of this room.
"Sispann la agresè."
Lola attempts to cast a spell to break the door down but nothing happened. She picks up a candle from the side table and performs a simple incendia spell but that doesn't worth either. In frustration she throws the candle against the door, she can't remember the last time she siphoned anything making her realise she doesn't have any magic.
Lola bangs against the door, "Open the door, Kol!" The room felt like is was closing in on her as the rage continued to grow within her, "What kind of friend are you? This isn't about Silas anymore, it's about you, me and our friendship. If you want to throw that away, fine." Lola slams her hand against the door, she grits her teeth as tears stream down her face, "You're a coward and I would have never done this to you." Her voice breaks, as her breathing continues to be erratic, "I would have never done this to you! Kol!"
-------------------------------------------------
Klaus anxiously paces around the living room of the Gilbert home, leaving what feels like the 50th voicemail for Lola, "Love, I know you're mad at me but could you at least just let me know you're safe?"
There's been a lingering feeling at the back of Klaus' mind that something has happened. They've argued before, they've argued worse than this and yet Lola doesn't keep up the silent treatment for this long, even if it was just a simple message to tell him to leave her alone she would have done that by now.
He gets torn away from his thoughts when Tyler walks into the home, carrying a weak looking Caroline, suffering from a hybrid bite Klaus gave her just a few short hours beforehand.
Tyler lays Caroline onto the floor on the other side of the boundary spell to Klaus, "You want to be in control, Klaus? Here. Now you get to be in control of her life. If you want her to die, fine. But then you can sit here and watch her die yourself."
Tyler walks out of the house as Caroline looks up towards Klaus who approaches her, "Nothing personal, love. If I cure you, that means victory for him. Don't worry. It won't be long now." Caroline's breathing becomes heavy as she slowly closes her eyes.
Klaus continues to pace around the room, hoping and praying he will get a phone call off Lola. So when his phone rings he immediately grabs his phone out of his pocket, only to see it's Adrianna calling. He chuckles dryly as he answers the phone, "Let me guess, Lola has told you to ring me to tell me to stop blocking up her voicemail."
"What are you talking about? No. I'm calling because I wanted you to tell Lola to stop ignoring my calls! If she didn't want to come to New York then that's fine, but at least tell me before I wait for two hours at the airport!"
Klaus' heart drops as his body stiffens, "What are you talking about?"
"Her flight landed last night but she was never on it."
Klaus' eyes widen as a million of scenarios run through his mind, "She never got on the flight?"
"That's what I'm trying to tell you! She's not with you?"
"No, she's not."
"What's going on, Klaus?"
"I'll call you back." Klaus hangs up and dials Lola's number straight away, which soon goes to voicemail. He closes his eyes momentarily, sighing heavily, "Love, this isn't funny anymore. Pick up your phone immediately."
Caroline's breathing becomes raspy, her skin losing colour with sweat droplets against her face. She glares over to Klaus who has his back to her, "If you don't feed me your blood, I'll die."
"Then you'll die," Klaus deadpans without looking at her, "and Tyler will have learned his lesson the hard way."
"How could you do this to him? To his mom? To Lola?" Caroline retorts, the mere mention of Lola's name she notices Klaus shift slightly, "Lola's my friend, do you think she will forgive you for killing me?"
"You have no right to class her as your friend." Klaus grunts, "Time and time again you've turned your back on her."
"Why are you doing this?"
"I'm a thousand years old. Call it boredom."
Caroline's breathing becomes even more weak, "I don't believe you."
Klaus leans against the door frame, continuing to not look in Caroline's direction, "Fine. Then maybe it's because I'm pure evil, and I can't help myself."
"No." Caroline breathes out, "It's because you are hurt. Which means that there is a part of you that is human."
Klaus looks over to her, intrigued. He sits on the table beside her, "How could you possibly think that?"
"Because I've seen it." Caroline croaks, "Because I've seen what you're like when you're with Lola. You're in love with Lola and anybody capable of love is capable of being saved. Every chance she got she would be in your corner, even when you weren't together."
Klaus' eyes start to glisten, moved by what she is saying about Lola. He remembers the exact day what Caroline is talking about, the first time Caroline had been poisoned with werewolf venom.
"I told Caroline that people always defined you from your past, yet I was able to see the good in you."
Klaus closes his eyes, trying to block out Lola's voice saying those words. He clears his throat as he looks away from Caroline, "You're hallucinating."
"Lola once said to me how much of an impact you make on her life. You make her feel like she is someone special, make her feel loved after spending most of her life feeling unloved and I know she makes you feel that way as well. She said that everyone focuses on the negative things you've done, but never the positive." Caroline takes a deep breath, closing her eyes, "I guess now is just another one of those moments."
Caroline's breathing is laboured then weak and fading. Klaus stares over to her, in a catch 22 situation on whether to save Caroline or not. He fights away the demons in his mind as he comes to his feet, biting into his wrist and putting it against Caroline's lips, "I'm doing this for Lola, not Tyler, not even for you."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Down The Rabbit Hole
Lola leans against the door, dark circles have formed around her eyes as she continues to fight the urge to sleep. She digs her nails into her skin of her hands to try and fight it, in fear that if she falls asleep she will be in the middle of another nightmare of her father. She glances down at her shaky hands to see dried blood surrounding the markings she's left, she sighs as she remembers they won't heal instantly as before.
The tears haven't stopped falling, she tried to keep track of how long she's been down here but it became too hard to keep track. Feeling defeated she rests her head against the door, wiping away stray tears falling down her face, "Kol, please if you can hear me just please let me out. I need to know you're okay." She shifts around, putting her hand against the door, her voice is as weak as her body, "I need- I need to know he's okay. Kol, please."
Caroline and Tyler both enter the mansion in the search of the hunter's sword. Caroline looks around confused when she sees baggage beside the front door and Lola's phone beside them, "Lola?"
Tyler opens the door leading down to the basement, "We'll check down here first." Caroline puts Lola's phone onto the baggage by the door and follows Tyler downstairs. By the time she reaches the bottom of the stairs, Tyler is already trying to make his way back upstairs, "It's not down here, Care. Try the attic."
Caroline doesn't follow straight away, she narrows her eyes towards a door, "Wait. what about this room? It could be in there."
"That's just another one of his stupid art rooms, it won't be in there."
Caroline reaches the door, she gestures towards the lock against the door, "If it's just art then why is there a padlock on the door?"
Lola stiffens as she hears muffled voices from the other side of the door, she leans her ear against the door to hear it's Caroline, "Caroline? Caroline!"
Caroline's eyes widen at the weak voice, "Lola?!" She breaks off the padlock with ease, opening the door to reveal Lola with a large cut at the side of her face, "Are you okay?"
Caroline moves closer to Lola but Lola pushes her away, "Where is he?" Caroline looks at Lola confused making Lola grow agitated, "Where is he?! I'm going to kill him!"
"H-he's at Elena's." Caroline stutters, "What happened?"
Tyler walks back down the stairs, he furrows his brows, "Lola?"
"Get out of my way, Lockwolf!" Lola pushes past Tyler in a fit of rage, grabbing her car keys and driving straight over to the Gilbert's house.
Once she's there she doesn't even bother to park normally, leaving her car in the middle of the road. She kicks the door in, anger pulsating through her veins, "Kol?! You son of a bitch!"
She walks into the living room where she sees Klaus looking at her wide eyed, a mixture of confusion and relief, "Where have you been?"
Klaus pulls Lola in an embrace, she can feel his entire body relax being back in her hold. She pulls away and looks at him confused, "What are you doing here? Where's Kol?"
It's then Klaus notices the large cut that has already started to gain purple bruising around it, "Your head...who done this to you?"
"Your backstabbing brother!" Lola snaps unintentionally, "Caroline said he's here, where is he?!" Klaus' hesitation and glossy eyes makes Lola begin to panic, "Why are you looking at me like that?" Klaus' gaze slowly moves over Lola's shoulder, his mouth agape, "Nik, what's-"
Lola follows his gaze into the kitchen, her eyes are drawn to a white sheet on the ground, covering something. There's a strong feeling in the pit of her stomach to not lift the sheet up yet can't stop herself as she slowly steps closer to it, crouching down as her hand reaches for the sheet.
"Lola, wait-" Klaus steps forward to try and move Lola away but he's blocked by Bonnie's spell.
Lola moves the sheet slightly to reveal Kol's burnt corpse, "Oh my god." Lola pushes herself away from him. She steps back into the room where Klaus is, he grabs hold of her when her balance becomes unsteady, both on the floor as Klaus refuses to let go. Her breathing becomes inconsistent against her heart wrenching sobs, "No, no! No, he isn't dead!"
Klaus moves to kneel in front of Lola, her tear stained face matching his. Her eyes are wide still staring towards Kol's corpse, Klaus cups her cheeks, "Look at me." Lola's panicked eyes meet Klaus' calm ones, "Breathe. You're okay."
"I said-" Lola shuts her eyes tight before opening them to look towards Kol again, "I said he was dead to me."
Klaus pulls Lola in towards his chest, letting her bury her face into him as she sobs. He rests his chin against the top of her head, trying to fight more tears for his brother. He rubs her back soothingly to keep her calm, which works, soon her breathing begins to calm down.
Lola pulls away from Klaus, realising where they actually are, "I don't understand, how long have you been here? Why are you still here?"
"Bonnie cast a spell so I can't leave this house."
"I can undo it." Lola quickly responds, she comes to her feet, "I-I don't know how but I can, I need my grimoire."
"Sweetheart, it's fine." Klaus stands in front of Lola to stop her from leaving the room he's trapped in, "You're not leaving my side, it's okay."
"No, it's not okay!" Lola snaps, "You can't just stay trapped here, I can-"
Lola stops talking as they hear the front door open to reveal Caroline and Tyler walking into the house. Caroline has a laptop in her hands while Tyler was the sword wrapped in a blanket.
Lola moves further into the room with her back to them both as she attempts to calm herself down, wiping away the tears. Klaus plasters a smug grin as he sits on the coffee table, "Well, if it isn't little orphan Lockwood. Come to show how laughably impotent you are against me?"
Tyler shrugs, "I'm just trying to help my friends find the cure. That's more than I can say for either of you." Tyler looks over Klaus shoulder to see Lola still with her back to them, "Especially you, Lola." Lola turns around, glaring at Tyler. Klaus comes to his feet, standing in front of Lola as Tyler continues, "You came to this town acting like the heroic sister but every chance you get you'll stab your brothers in the back to be with him."
Lola laughs spitefully as she moves past Klaus, "Are you trying to say you're heroic, Tyler?" She laughs again as she watches Tyler straighten up his posture, "Please. You're nothing. You were just an experiment that could have gone either way and if it had went the opposite way and you died, everyone would have moved on within 30 minutes max." Her glare turns deathly as she steps closer to him, "Everything that has made you remotely relevant is down to Klaus and without him you're nothing." She turns away from him, she squeezes Klaus' hand as she walks past him as reassurance and sits on the couch, burying her face into the palm of her hands.
Klaus stares at Tyler with a smug grin on his face as Tyler clears his throat and removes the sword from the blanket, "Found this in your attic."
"And you think finding the sword brings you closer to the cure?"
"You tell me. I was playing around with the handle on the ride over, and I found this." Tyler unwraps the leather strap on the top of the sword, revealing some sort of turning device.
Klaus steps closer towards the boundary, "And what do you think 'this' is?"
"It's called a cryptex." Caroline answers for Tyler who looks over to her confused, "I've seen The da Vinci Code. You turn the different sides to the different symbols to get the translation on the other side. And with the magic of the internet, Elena sent over these." Caroline holds up print outs of Jeremy's hunter tattoo, "So now all we have to do is cryptex away." She takes a seat on the other couch, opening up her laptop and glances over to Klaus, "If you happened to want to help, we wouldn't stop you."
"Right." Klaus shrugs as he sits beside Lola with a smug grin on his face, "Well, might I suggest using the magic of the internet to purchase an Aramaic-to-English dictionary from your nearest retailer."
Lola matches the same smug grin, "Maybe try Amazon."
Tyler turns to Caroline, looking confused, "What's Aramaic?"
"It's a dead language." Caroline drawls out, looking as equally confused, "It hasn't been used since, like, biblical times."
"Qetsiyah's native tongue, I'm guessing. You know, even if you had the best dictionary in the world, it could take days to translate. Perhaps weeks." Klaus sighs, pretending to look concerned he lightly shakes his head, "In bas so-teen-too ara-ma-eet."
"What does that mean?"
Klaus grins, "If only you spoke Aramaic."
Tyler sits besides Caroline and they both begin to try and translate the tattoo. Klaus watches Lola concerned, she continues to have her face buried into her hands, her knee bouncing up and down. He softly places his hand against her knee making her flinch, moving away slightly on the couch.
Lola looks over to him, she closes her eyes regretting moving away as she sighs, "I'm sorry. I didn't...I'm sorry."
Klaus closes the gap between them both on the couch, "Are you okay?"
Lola takes hold of Klaus' hand, while her other covers up her eyes, "Yeah, I'm fine. I just-"
"Okay, this is it!" Caroline interrupts, "We've translated all the symbols on the tattoo. Passage inside...requires a young senator, and a pretty flower." She throws her flashcards onto the table in front of her, irritated, "Okay, none of this makes sense!"
Klaus stands up from the couch, looking over to the pair with a large smirk, Klaus begins to speak in Aramaic, making Caroline and Tyler look over to him confused, "Requires a powerful witch and a hunter in full bloom."
Tyler narrows his eyes towards him, "What are you doing?"
"I don't need to tell you my reasons." Klaus snaps at Tyler, "Caroline. Bring my sword over here." Caroline picks up the sword and steps closer towards Klaus for him to read the cryptex, "Silas rests on the far side, the means of his destruction at hand." He glances at the pictures of Jeremy's tattoo on the computer screen, "Turn the cryptex to the right." Caroline obliges, "Stop. The top of the hilt reveals a key to a nautical map. Turn it to the left. Now turn the other piece. There's something else."
Klaus starts to speak Aramaic again, Lola picks up on what he's said and laughs slightly as she leans back on the couch, "Of course."
"What does it mean?" Caroline demands as she glances between both Klaus and Lola, "Klaus, what does it mean?"
"Call my sister and tell her we've got the translation of the tattoo."
Caroline obliges, she sits back beside Tyler and takes out her phone and dials Rebekah's number.
"Hello?"
"Hey, it's Caroline. We have the translation of the tattoo. We're emailing you pictures of the map and instructions right now."
"Got it. Thanks."
"Actually, it was me." Klaus says proudly as he paces around the room.
"Nik, you helped?"
"You sound so surprised, little sister."
"Shouldn't I be? I mean, you don't want me to be human. You don't want any of us to be human. Why would you help us find the cure?"
"Maybe I finally realized the longer I stand in the way of what you want, the longer you'll continue to hate me. Perhaps I want my sister to finally know happiness."
"Fool me once, shame on you; fool me a hundred times--"
"No more fooling. No more games. I hope you get to live, and die, as you wish."
"So do I."
"There is one more thing, Rebekah." Klaus says making Caroline and Tyler look over in his direction, he begins to speak quicker, "There is only one dose of the cure. You need to find it first and take it. It's the only way you'll--" Tyler rushes to end the call, Klaus raises his hands up and looks over to the pair satisfied with himself. Tyler storms out of the house and Caroline soon follows.
Lola stands by the doorway, holding her hand out to where the boundary spell must start yet she is able to reach her hand through it.
Klaus stands behind Lola, placing his hand against her shoulder making her flinch yet again, "Are you okay?"
"I think I've figured it out." Lola practically whispers, her stare not leaving the doorway, "I can feel the magic yet I can move my hand through it. It's like a magic veil that's keeping you in here so I can just-"
Lola gets interrupted once more as Caroline calmly walks back into the house, "You can't kill Tyler."
"Not only can I, I have to. I have a reputation to uphold. Moreover, I want to."
"I'm not asking you to forgive him." Caroline sighs, "All I'm asking is that you let him live, somewhere far from here."
"So he gets to live a happy life after he turned all my hybrids against me?" Klaus retorts in an irritated manner, he stands in front of Lola, glaring at Caroline, "After he tried to kill me, after he made it his life's mission to find the cure so he could use it against me, after he threatened Lola, your friend-"
Caroline's pleading eyes meet Lola's, "Lola, please. You know how much I love Tyler. You can see how scared I am to lose him. You said before we're similar. So, if you and I are so similar, then show me your compassion. Show him mercy."
Lola softly places her hand against Klaus' back, tapping her finger once indicating for him to do so, a silent language they used to use with each other. Klaus nods slightly, "Mercy? For Tyler? Very well. Tell him to leave town immediately." Klaus turns away from Caroline for a moment before facing her again, "And tell him to run and hide in a place I will never find him."
"Of course."
Caroline picks up her jacket and begins to walk away until Klaus speaks up again, "Tell him that this is the mercy I extend for Lola, not him...that I will give him a head start before I kill him."
Caroline's face falls as she turns back to Klaus, she looks over to Lola who is not giving anything away with her blank expression. Caroline bows her head and walks out of the house.
Lola clears her throat as she stands beside the doorway again, "Where does the boundary spell start?"
Klaus takes Lola's hand, guiding her to where he is unable to move further. His heart drops as he notices the dried blood and marks against Lola's hands, knowing exactly what's happened. He quickly blinks his concern away, not wanting Lola to notice.
Lola closes her eyes and concentrates to siphon away the spell, the red glow surrounds her hands. She opens her eyes, moving her hand away from the doorway, "I think it worked, try it."
Klaus slowly moves his hand between the doorway, a smile widens on his face when he is able to move his hand through the doorway. He looks at Lola with nothing but love and pride in his eyes, kissing her cheek, "You are incredible." He takes hold of her hand, guiding her out of the home, "Come on, we're going home."
They both step outside to see a solum looking Caroline on the porch swing, she looks up at them both confused, "How'd you get out?"
Lola nods to Klaus, giving him a knowing look. He steps away from them, walking towards Lola's car as she steps closer to Caroline, "Despite Bonnie's plan to keep Klaus trapped with her spell, she failed to realise I can siphon it. But why would anyone think about me when you create plans against me and those I love."
Lola descends down the porch steps as Caroline follows her, "Lola, wait-"
"I don't wanna hear it, Caroline!" Lola snaps, "I hope you got your epic goodbye with Tyler before Klaus can find him and rip out his worthless heart."
--------------------------------------------------
Klaus and Lola both arrive back at the mansion, Klaus guides Lola into the living room where he dabs a wet rag against the gash on her head.
Lola frowns as she pushes Klaus away gently, "Stop fussing, it's just a scratch."
Klaus looks at her unamused, "It looks more than a scratch, at least let me heal you."
Lola shakes her head, "It doesn't even hurt anymore, it's fine." She takes the rag out of Klaus' hands, leaning into him and wraps her arms around him, "I just want to stay like this."
Their short lived peace is soon interrupted when they hear the front door swing open, "Lola?!"
Lola's face squirms with annoyance as she raises her head up, "Oh, you didn't."
Klaus laughs slightly as he removes hair away from Lola's face, "I didn't have much of a choice, love."
Adrianna storms into the room where they are both sat, her eyes meet Lola's. Her eyes widen when she sees the cut on her forehead, "What happened to your eye?!"
Lola shrugs, pursing her lips nonchalantly, "I wanted it to match my jacket."
Adrianna rolls her eyes as she crouches down in front of Lola, "Don't joke with me, Lo. Let me see."
Adrianna grabs Lola's cheek, moving her head to the side to take a proper look at the cut. Lola pushes her away, "Uh, ow."
Adrianna picks up the rag that Klaus has just had hold of and throws it at Lola, "What is the matter with you?!"
Lola throws it back at her friend, "It wasn't my fault this time!"
"I'm guessing those bags in the foyer are yours?" Lola nods, Adrianna holds her hand out for Lola, "Good, I have a plane waiting for us."
"Wait, I'm not going to New York, Ade." Lola hesitates briefly before taking hold of Klaus' hand, "At least not right now."
Klaus drops his gaze from Lola as he sighs, looking up at Adrianna, "Can you give us a moment please, Adrianna?"
Lola watches as Adrianna leaves the room before looking back to Klaus with a pleading look in her eyes, "Please don't try and talk me into going away. I'm not leaving you."
"Love, this will do you the world of good. You need to get away from this town for a while, spend time with Adrianna in your favourite City."
Lola shakes her head, "I'd rather spend my time with you." Lola softly places her hand against his cheek as her eyes begin to sting with tears, "I'm not leaving you, Nik. Every time I do something bad happens."
Klaus moves Lola's hand from his face, keeping hold of it, "Well then, let's compromise. You have a head start and go to New York tonight then I will follow in a few days time."
Lola hesitates for a moment before eventually nodding in agreement, "I love you."
"I love you."
Klaus and Lola walk hand in hand into the foyer where Adrianna is waiting, she smiles over to the pair when she notices Klaus giving her a look meaning he wants to speak with her. Adrianna opens the front door, handing Lola the car keys, "I'll be right out. Your bags are already in the car."
Lola hugs Klaus before kissing him goodbye, "I'll see you soon."
Adrianna and Klaus both watch as Lola walks out of the mansion and gets into the car. Klaus waits until the car door is shut before he speaks, "It's happening again."
Adrianna frowns as she looks at Klaus who continues to stare out towards the car, "How can you be so sure?"
"Lola doesn't heal as quickly as she used to, so you can still see the marks she leaves on her hands when she is trying to stop it from happening." Klaus lowers his head, sighing heavily, "I haven't seen her like this since the twenties, I-"
"I'll talk to her." Adrianna assures Klaus, "I know what to do."
Klaus blinks away the odd tear threatening to escape, "Perhaps I should go with you both to New York, I don't think it's best to be apart from her while she is going through this again. I know who she is, and if she is going through her worst right now, I want to go through it with her."
"Just give me a few days to try and get through to her." Adrianna says in a soft and calm manner, "You have to trust me on this, Klaus. If what you suspect to be true then I've seen Lola like this as well."
"Just, please, look after her." Adrianna catches the helplessness and plead in Klaus' eyes, "She's all I've got left."
Adrianna smiles towards him, "Of course, we'll see you in a few days." Adrianna steps out of the house and walks towards the car. She gets into the drivers seat, looking over to Lola who is staring out into the night's sky, "You ready?"
Lola turns to face her best friend, she smiles, "I'm ready."
Klaus watches as they drive away, fighting every being in his body to not follow them both straight away to New York. He knows that Lola trusts Adrianna with her life so if anyone is able to get through to Lola, it's Adrianna.
