Chapter 56
Catch Me If You Can
Lola was enjoying the peace and quiet that usually doesn't happen in the Mikaelson home as she sat reading through one of her Aunt's grimoires. However the peace and quiet didn't last long, as usual, when there was an array of heavy knocks against the front door. Lola rolls her eyes as she turns the next page in the book, ignoring the knocking, She sits up straight, looking down at the new spell, intrigued,
Illusionary Cloaking Spell: More commonly known as an invisibility spell, this spell allows a witch to cloak themselves and their targets — be it a person, object or certain locations completely based on one's perception.
Another loud bang at the door makes Lola slam the book shut and stomps towards the front door with an irritated look on her face, "Stop banging on the door!" She swings the door open to reveal an awkward looking Elena standing on the front step. Lola frowns towards her, "Oh, it's you. What do you want?"
Elena attempts to not look intimidated by Lola as she stands up straighter, her shoulders broad, "Is Klaus here?"
"Why do you care?"
"I need his help."
Lola bursts out laughing as she shuts the door in Elena's face and walks back towards the room she was in. Elena's shoulders drop as she sighs then opens the door letting herself into the house and follows Lola, "This is serious."
Lola turns to face Elena, she narrows her eyes to the doppelgänger, "Who said you could come in?"
"It's about Damon." Elena begins, "Kol has attacked him and Jeremy. Jeremy got away but he still has Damon."
Lola stares at her with a blank expression before shrugging her shoulders, "Okay." She turns away from Elena and walks back into the room.
Elena watches Lola in shock before following her into the same room, "Did you even hear what I said? Klaus' psycho brother has your brother! He's killed all the vampires that Klaus had lined up for Jeremy to kill, he's most likely going to kill Damon too." Elena watches as Lola doesn't even flinch at anything she is saying, instead pouring herself a drink making Elena scoff, "How can you not care about that?"
Lola shrugs, "Kol won't kill Damon."
"How can you be so sure?"
An amused grin appears as Lola looks over to an anxious looking Elena who can barely stand still at the thought of Damon in danger, "I get it, you're still in your little honeymoon phase with my brother and don't want it to be destroyed." She purses her lips in thought, "A bit like you destroyed Stefan."
Elena sighs as she sinks into one of the leather chairs in the room, "I'm just following my heart, I can't help how I feel."
Lola's phone goes off, she grabs it as she takes a seat on the sofa to see a text from Klaus,
"Where are you?"
Lola smiles to herself knowing what she is about to reply will make him panic and she could do with a bit more entertainment in her life,
"Causing a scene. Text you later."
Lola sits forward in her seat, "You follow your heart and expect everyone to be fine with it. I follow mine and become the enemy." She tilts her head slightly, narrowing her eyes to Elena, "That doesn't seem fair."
Elena's face twists with disgust, "Because it's Klaus."
A bitter laugh escapes Lola, "You're acting like Damon is a saint." She observes Elena who shifts in her seat, Lola sits back as she scoffs noticing how obvious it is how attached Elena has got, "You are so fond of him. It tells me you don't really know who he is. Do you know how many people he's killed?"
"That's not the point."
"What is the point you are trying to get across?"
"Klaus has caused so much damage in this town, he killed Jenna. At one point you thought he was going to kill you too." Elena laughs spitefully as she glares at Lola, "Do I need to remind you on him compelling Stefan to turn off his humanity?"
Lola stares at Elena with a deathly calm expression, "It's almost as though Damon hasn't done anything like that, oh wait, he has." She shrugs as she stands up from her seat, "I never met Matt's sister but from what I've been told it was Damon who turned her into a vampire, was it not? Wasn't it just because he was bored? I remember when Damon rang me asking me to come to this town and he went on about how dreary this place and his soul entertainment was turning her into a vampire but then Stefan killed her. And how can I forget when Damon killed your little brother, Jeremy." Lola scoffs as she steps closer to Elena who is avoiding eye contact with Lola, clenching her fists so hard her knuckles are turning white, "Oh now you've turned silent, are you trying to come up with an excuse as to why Damon killed Jeremy? Perhaps you'll blame a Mikaelson, you love to do that. Although none of them were in town then. So what's your excuse going to be, Elena?"
Elena shakes her head, blinking away tears threatening to escape, "I'm not listening to this."
Elena stands but is stopped by Lola standing right in front of her, "Sit. Down."
Elena rolls her eyes as she sits back down in the same chair, "So much for you caring about your brothers if you're just going to talk badly about them."
"Have I said anything wrong?" Lola shrugs her shoulders as she sits back down on the sofa, crossing her arms against her chest, "No I haven't, because everything I've said has happened. Damon would sit right next to me and agree with everything I've just said about him. We're all killers, Elena, even your perfect little self is a killer." She laughs in a half-surpressed manner, "It just amazes me how this town loves to bash Klaus for doing the same. Yes, he has killed people close to you. But, I bet the families of the people that Damon has killed feel the same way that you do. And yet because those people have nothing to do with your life you just look the other way."
Elena looks away, Lola smiles to herself knowing she is getting to Elena. She clears her throat wanting to bite further, "What about Connor's family?" Elena's face turns pale, her eyebrows raise in shock, mouth slightly agape looking at Lola who has a smug grin, "He may have been a dick but I bet he has a family somewhere."
Elena stays sitting in shock until they hear the front door swing open and slam shut, "Lola?!" Klaus shouts frantically.
"Nik!" Lola exclaims, her glare not leaving Elena as Klaus walks into the room, "You're home."
Klaus storms into the room, his frustrated stature vanishes as he senses the thick tension between Lola and Elena. He laughs, almost relived as he sits beside Lola, "So, this is the scene you were talking about."
"I was just warming her up."
Klaus places one arm against the back of the sofa, a smirk on his face, "Well, don't let me interrupt." He gestures between the pair, "Please, carry on with the show."
Lola nods in Elena's direction, "Go ahead, Elena. Tell him what we were just talking about."
Elena avoids Lola's glare, she sits forward looking towards Klaus, "I need your help. Kol has attacked Jeremy and Damon and he killed all those vampires you created for Jeremy to kill."
"Not exactly what I was talking about but as usual you avoid the topic." Lola rolls her eyes, "Shocker."
"A bit ironic, you coming to me for help." Klaus comments with a smug grin, "Weren't your friends just trying to bury me in a cement tomb?"
Elena scoffs slightly as she shakes her head, "This is your fault. You started this when you forced Jeremy to kill those vampires."
"And now my little brat of a brother has gone and made things worse. Well, he never did like Damon." Klaus leans closer to Lola as he shrugs, "I suppose I should do something, shouldn't I?"
Lola shrugs back, not even bothering to fight back her cruel grin, "Oh well I don't know, I'm sure Damon could do with a bit of a beating."
Klaus chuckles at Lola's comment, making Elena glare at them both, "Call him off, Klaus."
"You are in no position to make demands, love." Klaus snaps, immediately putting Elena in her place, "Whilst I'd like to cure you to make more hybrids, I do have other reasons for finding the cure, not the least of which is destroying it so you lot can't use it against me."
"Whatever our differences, we want the same thing." Elena sits forward, with a pleading look, "Please, Klaus, I'm begging you."
Both Klaus and Lola's eyes are bright with humour at the sternness attitude that Elena suddenly seems to portray. Klaus rolls his eyes as he takes out his phone, dialling Kol's number, "Little brother." He drawls out, "Just two days home, and I'm told you've already gone and made a mess."
Kol sighs dramatically at the other end of the phone, "Come on, Nik. I was only having some fun."
"Those vampires were for my hunter."
"I'll make some more. There's no shortage of people."
"Dearest, Kol." Lola speaks up, "What have you done with my brother?"
"Ah, hello darling Lottie. I gave him a good and proper beating just for old time's sake."
"Yes. Well, you've had your fun. Now let him go and come home. Avoid any more trouble, or you'll find yourself back in a box." Klaus threatens.
"Hey. No need to be nasty about it."
"On the contrary, I find nastiness to be essential whenever my siblings try to sabotage me. Listen closely, Kol. Stay away from the Gilbert boy. You understand?"
"Fine. I won't touch him. You have my word."
Klaus hangs up the phone, "I assume you heard everything?"
Elena nods, her shoulders lower with relief until Lola gestures towards the door, "Good. You can go now. I would say I hope the door doesn't hit you on your way out but I would be lying."
Elena scoffs as she stands up and starts to walk out the room until she stops in her step, "You know what, Lola?" She turns to face Lola who still remains seated with Klaus, "You claim to love your brothers and you'd always protect them yet I was the one who had to stop a maniac from killing one of them today. So much for the loyalty you claim to possess."
Klaus can feel Lola begin to tense at Elena's words, knowing if he doesn't do something to calm her down, Lola will bite back. He takes hold of her hand, resting it against his leg as Elena continues to walk out the room. Lola's leg bounces up and down, trying to stop herself from saying anything but her anger consumes her as she snatches her hand away from Klaus, she trudges towards Elena, "You want to talk about loyalty?"
Elena turns to face Lola dramatically as Lola narrows her glare, "How about the loyalty you claimed to have when it came to my other brother. You remember Stefan, right? The one who's heart you broke or have you just forgotten about that ever since you decided to shack up with Damon?"
"Just stop, Lola!" Elena screams, "Give it a rest! Okay, so what I chose Damon?! Maybe now he will actually know what it's like to have someone care about him unlike his selfish sister who only thinks about herself!"
The room falls silent at Elena's outburst, a sinister silence which stops when Lola looks away from Elena momentarily as she lets out an eerily humourless laugh, "You are the most selfish," Lola steps closer to Elena as her body fills with rage, "Self centred bitch I have ever met!"
Immediately picking up on Lola's short temper, Klaus stands up from the sofa, blocking Lola's path to Elena, gripping hold of Lola's waist to stop her. Lola tries to pull away as she continues to sneer at Elena, "Let go of me! I want to ring that annoying neck-"
Klaus lowers his head to be eye level with Lola, "Calm down."
Lola looks at him wide eyed, holding her breath like she is holding her anger in. Her eyes soften slightly looking into Klaus' as she releases a heavy sigh, she glares heatedly at Elena before storming out of the room. Klaus snaps his attention to Elena, fury covering his face, "Leave before I change my mind and have Kol kill your brother and I kill you myself."
He watches Elena hurry out of the house, sighing as he hears the door slam behind her. He tries to compose his own anger towards the doppelgänger until he can hear smashing in a different direction. He follows the sound of smashing into the kitchen where Lola channels her anger by smashing up every single thing in sight in the kitchen.
Klaus steps further into the kitchen, "Love, calm down."
"I want to kill her!" Lola snaps through gritted teeth, "No, I need to kill her. Who does she think she is coming to this house demanding we do what she wants? She had the nerve to say she was following her heart when she decided to run off with Damon only 24 hours after she broke up with Stefan but then said I'm the bad guy for following my own? How does that make sense?"
Lola picks up another plate, throwing it against the wall smashing it into pieces, she lets out a scornful laugh, "Maybe she has been in so many car crashes because she is the car crash. She has wrecked all of our lives just by breathing! Rebekah was onto something by making Matt run the car over Wickery Bridge, but Stefan just had to save her!" Picking up a bowl, she smashes it against the same wall as the plate as she scoffs, "The fucking idiot!"
Klaus clears his throat, looking down to the floor now covered in broken china, "Do you maybe want to stop smashing up every piece of china we own?"
"I'll tell you what I want to do." Lola steps closer to Klaus, clutching another plate, pointing it towards him, "I want to go to Wickery Bridge and break off a piece of it and drive it right through her perfect little heart!"
Klaus closes the gap between them both, removing the plate out of Lola's grasp and placing it on the counter. Then pulling Lola in a warm embrace, not saying anything, allowing her this time to calm down. The familiar scent of his cologne and his arms gripped around her makes Lola calm down, her angry breathing now turned calm. She sighs as she relaxes in his hold, wrapping her arms around Klaus' neck.
"I have to say," Klaus mumbles in the nape of Lola's neck, he lifts his head away, smirking at her, "It was rather entertaining to see you put the doppelgänger in her place."
"Yeah?"
"Mhm."
Lola smirks as she leans against Klaus' ear, "You should have seen what I done to her yesterday."
A low rumbled chuckle escapes Klaus as he steps closer to the kitchen counter, his grip still around Lola until her back hits against the counter. Electricity runs through them both as their lips collide with each other. Klaus' grip around Lola's waist slowly moves down to the top of her thighs, lifting her up onto the counter. Lola's head tilts back as Klaus leaves kisses against her jaw down towards her neck, she wraps her legs around his waist pulling him closer as his hands snake up her shirt.
Lola opens her eyes slightly to see Rebekah appearing in the doorway looking over to the couple disgusted. Lola smiles over to her, "Fancy seeing you here, Bekah."
A breathless Klaus pulls away slightly from Lola, his hands still under her shirt as he looks over to his younger sister, amused, "Ah, sister. What a pleasant surprise."
Rebekah shakes her head, attempting to erase what she's just witnessed, "Excuse me while I go choke back on some vomit."
"I'll be upstairs." Lola hops off the counter, "I'd rather not be part of another argument today."
--------------------------------------------------
Lola attempts to enjoy peace and quiet for a second time today as she tries to relax in a bubble bath. She sinks down further the more she starts to feel relaxed but is interrupted at the sound of her phone ringing. She lets out a frustrated sigh realising that she is just destined to not enjoy peace and quiet today.
She grabs her phone from the side to see it's Stefan, "Hey, Stef. What's up?"
"You know I wouldn't ask if it wasn't important but are you doing anything right now?"
"As side from trying to have a relaxing bath, no I'm not. What's going on?"
"Kol compelled Damon to kill Jeremy. I got to him in time and he's down in the cell. I could really do with your help to keep him down there. You could maybe pack a bag or something and stay the night?"
Lola sighs, "All right, give me 30 minutes and I'll be there."
Klaus walks in to see a half dressed Lola and the bath now drained, "That's a shame, I was just about to suggest I join you."
Lola smiles as Klaus snakes his arms around her, "Hm, as amazing as that sounds I have to go and be a sister. Considering your brother has compelled mine to kill Jeremy." Lola pulls away from Klaus, walking into their bedroom, "Where is he?"
Klaus follows her into the room, "He stormed out of here about 10 minutes ago."
"So what was with all the shouting and banging downstairs?"
Klaus scoffs as he falls onto their bed, "Rebekah tried to dagger Kol, then Kol tried to stake Rebekah with the white oak."
Now fully dressed, Lola jumps onto the bed, kneeling beside Klaus with a mischievous grin, "Who'd have thought we would be the most normal ones in our families?" She kisses him before she climbs off the bed, "I'll see you tomorrow."
-------------------------------------------------
Stefan opens the door to the boarding house as soon as he hears Lola's car pull up. He smiles at his older sister sincerely as he takes her bag from her hand.
"Is he awake?" Lola asks as she closes the door behind her.
Stefan shakes his head, placing her bag at the bottom of the stairs, "Not yet, come on."
Lola follows down towards the cell where Damon is laid on the ground unconscious. Lola frowns at her brother on the floor, surrounded in his own blood, "You bled him out?"
Stefan shrugs as he leans against the dirt mount in the cell, holding onto a stake, "It was the only way." Damon begins to stir awake, Stefan gently moves his sister away, standing in front of her as protection if needed, "Easy there, buddy. You lost a lot of blood."
Damon groans as he attempts to sit up, "So you bled me out?"
"Yeah. I didn't really have much of a choice. Kol's compulsion is still in effect, so you need to stay locked up. We don't have any vervain, so...this was the only way I could weaken you."
"You sound real torn up about it." Damon remarks, "Shouldn't we be going after Kol, make him decompel me?"
"Yeah, yeah, sure." Stefan quips sarcastically, "That sounds easy enough, Damon. I'll get right on that."
Damon falls back to the floor, failing to sit up and begins to cough, "At least let me see Elena."
Lola rolls her eyes at the fact that's the first thing Damon thinks of, in front of Stefan. Stefan scoffs, "Come on. You know you can't do that. With the sire bond, all you have to do is tell her to let you out of here. It's too risky."
"You're really enjoying this, aren't you?"
Stefan shrugs, "It's better for Elena if you stay in here for now, at least until we find the cure, and then once she's no longer sired and you're no longer compelled, you can both do whatever the hell you want."
Stefan turns and walks out of the cell, shutting the door behind both him and Lola. Damon lifts his head up, "Stefan, wait. Stefan! Stef-" Stefan ignores him, locking the door shut and walks away leaving Lola standing there looking at Damon through the railings, he looks over to her with pleading eyes, "Lo, come on. Let me out."
Lola sighs, resting her arms against the door, "You know I can't do that, D."
"This is your little friend's fault, the least you could do is get him to reverse the compulsion."
Lola shrugs, "If I knew where he was, I would."
Damon groans, laying back down against the cold stone floor, "I'm starving, Lo."
"It's not gonna work, Damon." She turns to walk back upstairs before shouting back to Damon, "I'm sorry!"
"Yeah you really sound it." Damon mumbles before passing out again.
Lola gets to the top of the stairs but only opens the door slightly when she hears Elena speaking to Stefan, "Stefan, what are you doing with Rebekah? She tried to kill me."
"And this will be the second time that Damon tried to kill Jeremy." He shrugs, "So I guess nobody's perfect, right?"
Elena frowns at Stefan's cold attitude, "Are you trying to punish me? I don't know how many times I can apologise."
"I never asked you to." Stefan looks at her with an indifference expression, "You can do whatever you want, Elena. I really don't care."
"You're hurt. You're hurt, and you're acting out. Stefan, this isn't you."
"Sure it is. You've just never seen me like this. You don't know what I look like when I'm not in love with you." Elena is taken aback by Stefan's attitude and he simply responds with a smug grin, "I'll let Damon know you stopped by."
Lola opens the door further, Elena looking over Stefan's shoulder to see Lola appearing from the door wearing the same smug grin as her brother. Elena stays standing in her spot in shock, she blinks away tears before slowly stepping away and eventually walking out of the house.
Stefan turns to see Lola, he clears his throat as he grabs his jacket, "You gonna be okay here on your own?"
"Sure I will be." Lola nods, "Where are you going?"
Stefan sighs, putting his hands into his jacket pockets, "I just need to get some air."
Stefan turns to leave but Lola steps forward, "Wait." She pulls her brother into a hug, "I'm proud of you."
It's about 1 in the morning and Lola continues to stir awake in her room, maybe it's because the last time she was in this room she came back to life, or maybe it's because she's so used to having Klaus with her it feels strange when he isn't by her side.
She wonders downstairs deciding to make herself some coffee, noticing that the house is still empty, she frowns to herself wondering why Stefan hasn't came back yet. She ventures into the kitchen and turns on the coffee pot, yawning as she waits for it to brew.
"Can't sleep?"
Lola smiles hearing the familiar soothing voice she's been missing, she turns around to see Klaus stepping into the kitchen, "I take it you can't either. What are you doing here?"
Klaus glances up at the ceiling pretending to be in thought, "It was getting rather quiet without you there, so I figured you may like some extra company."
"Well, Stefan left a few hours ago but hasn't came back and Damon is as entertaining as a wooden spoon so I'd love some extra company." Lola wraps her arms around Klaus as he wraps his around her waist, "Is it weird to say that I've missed you even though it's only been a few hours? Or have I gained severe attachment issues?"
Klaus leans into the nape of Lola's neck, placing a kiss, "The feeling is mutual, my love."
