Chapter 44

The Departed

FLASHBACK, NEW ORLEANS - 1919

"Lola, trust me when I say you have absolutely nothing to worry about when it comes to Klaus." Marcellus explains to his friend as they walk along the streets of New Orleans, "He absolutely adores you, I'm pretty sure he would die before he chooses anyone over you." He laughs, "I would go as far to say he would probably get himself killed if it meant he was protecting you and you know he isn't like that for anyone."

But Marcel's kind words weren't really for Klaus, after all, he's refusing Marcel to be with the woman he loves: Rebekah. No, the words were there to comfort his dear friend, Lola, who's always been there for him since she arrived in the city.

Marcellus brought Lola out for a walk on this sunny afternoon after she had an altercation with Klaus. Lola sighs as she plays with a part of her dress, "I know that. But I just see the way that red headed witch looks at him and she is practically undressing him. It's infuriating."

"That Genevieve has been like that with every man she's came across. I promise you that you have nothing to worry about." Marcellus assures her.

Lola grins in his direction as they continue to walk, she links his arm, "Have I ever told you how much I appreciate you, Marcellus. If you weren't apart of this family we would have probably killed each other."

Anxiety rushes through him as he thinks about what he and Rebekah had done the night previous, something that was going to change this family, forever.

Marcellus clears his throat as he picks up the pace now the compound is coming back into view. He notices Lola doesn't follow, he turns to see her staying in the same spot, "Are you coming?"

Lola's famous warm and bright smile appears on her face, a glimmer in eye that she has an idea brewing, "I'll catch up with you. I need to get an apology gift for Nik."

Lola continues down the street to then arrive at a stall in the market that sells unique paints. There are only a few colours that Klaus has not been able to add to his collection of many. Which is why Lola is taken aback when she spots one of the most rare colours that Klaus has been searching for, glaucous. Not too light to be considered pale blue and not too dark to be considered navy, it's fits right in the middle. The most beautiful blue.

Without hesitation, Lola buys the pot of paint and heads back to the compound with a spring in her step. As she looks up and looks through the crowd she notices a familiar face, a face she hasn't came across for 33 years, Damon.

The smile on her face grows even wider as she rushes through the crowd and pulls Damon in for a long hug, "Damon! You're here!" She pulls away from the hug to see her older brother smiling back down at her, "You're actually here."

"I'm here." Damon repeats, "It's good to see you, little sister."

Lola pulls Damon in for another hug, worried if she lets go this will all just be a dream, "I can't believe you're actually here." She pulls away once more, then taking hold of his hand as they walk through the crowds, "You finally found me, then? You must meet everyone here!"

Damon pulls Lola's hand back as he comes to a halt, making Lola come to a halt. She turns to look at him confused as guilt begins to wash all over his, "I didn't actually come here to find you." Lola's face drops, as does her hand from his. Making Damon step closer to her starting to panic, "But this worked in our favour!"

Lola narrows her eyes at her brother, "So what are you doing here?"

"I heard there are witches here that can help with our situation with Katherine." Damon explains, making Lola scoff, "We can finally free her from the tomb, Lola!"

"It's been 55 years, Damon. You've got to let all of this go!" Lola exclaims as she rolls her eyes.

Damon's exterior now becomes hard and cold, "It's okay for you, isn't it? You're happy. Making a new life for yourself here, forgetting about your real family."

Lola stands up straight, becoming defensive, "Hey, don't you dare spin this around onto me! I was there for you! I was there for you through it all, was Stefan? No. I was! You know everything that happened with Dominic, him leaving without even saying goodbye on our wedding day. That broke me, I needed a fresh start. You could have been apart of this fresh start if you weren't so hellbent on getting Katherine out of that god damn tomb!"

"This is your fresh start?" Damon's words now full of venom, "Walking around this city like you own the place, buying what?" He snatches the bag out of Lola's hand, he scoffs when he looks in it and letting out a scornful laugh, "Paint? Your fresh start involves paint? What you going to do? Paint yourself a new family? How about paint yourself a new man who's just going to leave you like the other one did?"

Lola grits her teeth, fighting back tears. Not wanting to reveal how much Damon's words hurt her. Instead she slaps Damon across the face, hard. He stumbles back as he holds his red cheek, looking over to Lola almost shocked at the strength his little sister suddenly has.

Lola steps closer to him, "Stay away from me."

Lola turns her back on him to continue walking but then feels something pierces her back. She gasps in pain, stepping back slightly to fall into Damon's arms. He leans towards her ear, "I plan to." He seethes.

He rips whatever piece of wood out of Lola's back making her stumble forward. She turns around to see Damon no where to be seen. But something still isn't right, it's as though there's still a piece of wood stuck in her back.

She holds onto the brick wall beside her to keep her balance as she winces in pain at the feel of the wood slowly moving closer to her heart. Luckily she is right around the corner from the compound, she rushes there and barges into it.

"Nik!" Lola shouts out as she collapses onto a chair, "Nik help me!"

Klaus rushes out to where Lola is sat, worry all over his face, "What happened?"

"There's...something...moving towards...my heart." Lola breathes out, gasping for breath. Each breath as painful as the next, it's like each breath moves the shard of wood closer to her heart.

Not needing to hear anything more, Klaus pushes his hand into the gash on Lola's back making her scream out in pain.

Klaus places his other hand against Lola's hands, letting her squeeze it to channel her pain, "I'm sorry, sweetheart. This will be over soon."

Just like that Klaus removes the piece of wood, no longer than an inch out of Lola's back. She sighs with relief as she leans back in the chair, faintly smiling as she looks up at Klaus, "Thank you."

Klaus crouches down beside her, trying not to show his anger, ready to tear apart whoever did this to his love, "Tell me what happened."

Lola explains everything, explains how it was her own brother who did this. How this happened because Lola was moving on with her life and not stuck in the past like he is.

As if Klaus didn't feel enough anger, after hearing this his anger begins to grow more and more as he stands up, clenching his fists. Lola notices this and stands up next to him, placing her hands on either side of his face, "Look at me. I'm fine, okay? We just need to forget this ever happened."

Klaus frowns, "You expect me to forget that your own brother almost killed you?!"

Klaus goes to rage on but Lola stops him by softly placing her hand over his lips, "He has just proven to me why I wanted to move on. I have my family now, and nothing is going to ruin that."

Lola locks eyes with Klaus, the glimmer of hope in her eyes instantly calms Klaus down like it always does. He sighs as he kisses Lola's forehead then resting his own against hers, "Nothing is going to ruin it."

-------------------------------------------------

A loud gasp escapes Lola's lips as she awakens on the cold hard floor of the now dark Mikaelson mansion. Wincing at the pain in her neck she rubs her hand on the back of her neck, then clicking it back into place.

Eyes widen when she remembers everything that happened. Klaus. Where's Klaus? She shoots up and begins rushing around the house looking for him, nowhere to be found.

As she walks back down the stairs into the foyer, the front door opens with a guilt ridden Rebekah heading in, "Okay I know I said I was going to leave but I got half way out the state when I realised I didn't want to leave you and Nik." Rebekah frowns as she notices the panic on Lola's face, "What happened?"

Lola rushes down the last few steps, "You need to call Elijah. You need to tell him to get here as quick as he can."

"Lola, what's going on?"

"They have Nik."

Rebekah narrows her eyes at Lola, "What do you mean they have Nik?"

Lola blurts out everything that happened since Rebekah left. How her brothers desiccated Klaus, taking his body away, leaving her here with a broken neck.

Rebekah takes a deep breath after hearing everything, "I'll call Elijah."

-----------------------------------------------------

"No way." Lola shouts as she stands up from her seat.

Elijah sighs, "Charlotte..."

"Forget it, Elijah." Lola grunts as she interrupts Elijah, "I'm not going to let Nik stay in a bastard coffin so Elena can live out her pathetic human fantasy."

When Elijah returned he explain his plan which is to keep Klaus in the coffin while Elena lives out her human life. Rebekah has agreed to the terms, they are awaiting Kol's response and attempting to get Lola to agree which is clearly proving difficult.

Rebekah stands up to stand beside Lola, "I'm not happy with it either, Lola, but this needs to happen. If we don't get Nik's body back before Alaric finds him then it's over."

"Okay so if we agree to this, then what?" Lola shoots her hands up in the air, "We're just to spend the next sixty odd years running around the world from Alaric?"

Elijah nods, he fixes his suit jacket as he stands, "We've done it before because of our father, we'll do it again."

"Together." Rebekah adds.

Elijah stands in front of Lola as she paces, he stops her by placing his hands on either one of her arms, "Look at me, I know you and Niklaus have just found each other again and this is the last thing you want to do. But this needs to happen, Charlotte."

They both turn their head in Rebekah's direction as her phone goes off. She quickly reads her message and looks up to the pair, "It's Kol, he's agreed."

"So that just leaves me then?" Lola asks, she bows her head for a moment and sighs, hating that she has to agree to this. She looks over to Elijah as she tries to fight back the tears threatening to escape, "You swear once Elena has lived her stupid life we can wake Nik?"

"I give you my word."

Lola faintly nods, not able to give either of the Mikaelsons eye contact, instead fixating her glum stare to the floor, "I hate this but fine."

"I'll go and give them our terms now." Elijah announces as he begins to walk towards the front door, turning to face Rebekah as he does, "Rebekah, once I have the location of where Niklaus is you will be the first to know to go and get him."

"Wait!" Lola shouts out, making Elijah come to a halt as he opens the front door. She starts to follow him out of the door, "I'm coming with you."

Elijah puts his hands up to block Lola's path, "Is that a good idea?"

Lola rolls her eyes, "Relax, my brothers may have snapped my neck but I'm not going to do anything." She purses her lips, "Unless they do something first of course."

--------------------------------------------------

Both Elijah and Lola arrive at the Gilbert house. Elena stands in shock as she opens the door to come face to face with them, "Stefan."

Stefan and Matt, who were in the kitchen, look towards the front doorway. Stefan locks eyes with his sister, nothing but coldness beneath her eyes, "Elijah. Lola."

"Hello again." A faint smirk on Elijah's face.

Everyone sits at the dining table in the kitchen, Lola sits beside Elijah at the head of the table as Elijah begins to explain his demands, "All we need is to take that stake away from him. Once he's been disarmed, the weapon's in my possession, my family will scatter to the ends of the Earth and Alaric will follow us."

"And you'll just run?" Stefan questions, not believing anything as he takes a seat beside Elena. He glances over to his sister, "Lola?"

"It's not the first time." Lola grunts as she fixates her glare on her younger brother.

"We've done it before." Elijah responds, "Klaus and Rebekah spent the better part of a thousand years evading my father. What's another half century while Elena is able to live out the rest of her natural life?"

Lola scoffs, "If she'll last that long."

Elena sighs, "We've finally stopped him, Elijah. After everything that he's done to us, I can't just let you bring him back."

Elijah sits forward, placing his hand on tops of Lola's that is resting on her leg, digging her nails into her leg to stop herself from saying anything, "I give you my word, Elena. I will not revive Klaus within yours nor even within your children's lifetimes." Elijah sits back in his seat as he mumbles, "Perhaps that will finally teach him some manners."

"Why should she trust you?" Matt speaks up as he rests against the backrest of Elena's chair, "All you've done is screw her over."

"And for that, I am deeply ashamed. But know this, she could have been dead the instant I walked through that door tonight, so Elena, I leave it to you to make the decision whether to trust me or not." Elijah declares in a calm manner.

Suddenly, Damon responds through the phone in the middle of the table, "Not! Hello? Did that concussion give you brain damage?! His lunatic siblings will kill you the first chance they get!"

Lola rolls her eyes, thinking if she does that any more they'll probably stay like that. Elijah looks down at the phone, growing annoyed, "Rebekah and Kol will honour the terms. If you return Klaus' body to us, Elena will come to no harm."

Stefan nods his head in Lola's direction, "What about you?"

Lola folds her arms against her chest, looking away, refusing to speak anymore. Elijah taking this as his que to speak up again, "Charlotte has also agreed to those terms. Granted it took a while longer but in the end that's what she agreed."

Elena looks at Stefan, mentally debating her decision when Elijah speaks up again, "Do we have a deal?"

"No! No, no, no, no! Did I mention no?" Damon shouts through the phone once more.

Stefan looks at Elena and sighs, "Elena, it's up to you."

"Oh, come on!"

Before Damon can rant on any further, Lola hangs up the phone, she huffs as she sits back in the chair, crossing her arms, "I've had enough of hearing his voice for this century."

Elena turns her attention back to Elijah, "Why do you want Klaus' body?"

"He's my brother." Elijah simply states, "We remain together."

Elena sighs, "We have a deal."

The plan starts with luring Alaric in a completely different location to where Klaus actually is, while Rebekah goes to the right location, meeting up with Damon and retrieving Klaus' body.

Jeremy begins this plan by dialling Alaric's number who soon answers, "Yes?"

Jeremy gets straight to the point, "I know where Klaus' body is."

"Good. Tell me."

"Damon's on his way to bury him in the woods off Route 12." Jeremy feeds Alaric the lies, "I'll text you with the specifics."

"Thank you, Jeremy. You're doing the right thing for your sister."

"I know." Jeremy looks over at Elena and hangs up. Stefan, Matt, Elena, Lola and Elijah are sitting at the table looking at Jeremy, "He bought it."

--------------------------------------------------

Stepping out of the elevator, Rebekah arrives at the storage facility, "Damon!" She calls out, "Damon, where are you?"

Rebekah soon grows impatient as she continues to go down the never ending rows of storage units, "Damon, this isn't funny."

She continues walking down a row and is suddenly grabbed from behind by Damon, who covers her mouth so she won't scream. Damon pulls her back so they are hidden behind a unit, "Rebekah. Shhhh. We need to get Klaus' body out of here before Alaric finds us."

Taking the next step of the plan in action, Rebekah and Damon are wheeling Klaus' casket to a car, but Alaric comes out of nowhere, grabs Rebekah and slams her head against her car, then throws her to the ground. Damon rushes at Alaric but Alaric kicks him out of his way. Alaric opens the casket and pulls out the white oak stake. Klaus' eyes fly open. Rebekah rushes to get up.

"No!"

"No, don't!"

"No! No! No!"

Alaric stakes Klaus' in the heart. Klaus lets out a gasp as his body engulfs in flames. Damon grabs Rebekah so that she can't run to the casket as she screams and cries watching her beloved brother burn in front of her eyes.

Alaric turns around, glaring at Rebekah as he gestures the white oak stake towards her, "Next."

"Rebekah, run. Run!" Damon pushes Rebekah towards the opposite direction and she rushes off. Damon rushes towards Alaric to distract him, but Alaric throws him to the ground and rushes off in search of Rebekah.

Damon sits himself up and dials Stefan's number, sighing to himself as he awaits his brother to answer.

"Damon."

"Bad news, brother." Damon breathes out, "Alaric staked Klaus. He's dead."

There's a moment of silence on Stefan's end before he speaks up again, "I feel okay, do you feel anything?"

Damon glances down at himself before responding, "No."

"It took Sage about an hour before she got sick."

Damon scoffs, "Yeah or Klaus was lying about being the sire of our bloodline."

"Well, if he wasn't lying, an hour is not enough time to get you all the way back to Mystic Falls."

"For us to have our epic goodbye, Stefan?" Damon asks sarcastically.

"Not us, brother." Stefan practically whispers, "You and Elena."

"Well, I guess you'll just have to say goodbye for both of us, won't you? Call me if you cough up a lung."

Both brothers hang up the phone when Jeremy steps closer to Stefan from behind, "Stefan. Elena's not at home. Matt and I, we're getting her out of town."

"It's gonna be fine." Stefan attempts to assure the young Gilbert, "Klaus was lying, we're all gonna be okay."

Elijah and Lola step forward, Caroline following shortly after. Elijah stiffens as he looks over to Stefan, "What happened?"

But Stefan doesn't respond, Caroline steps closer to him, "Stefan?"

Stefan's glossy eyes fall upon his sister and Elijah, "Klaus is dead."

Elijah steps forward as the colour drops from his face, "What did you just say to me?"

"Alaric killed him, I'm sorry."

Elijah bows his head as he takes hold of Lola's arm as if she will collapse to the floor if he lets go, "I need to find Rebekah. Are you coming?" Lola nods and proceeds to follow Elijah further into the woods.

"Lola, wait!" Stefan shouts after his sister.

Lola snaps her head around back into his direction, anger covering her face, "What more could you possibly want to say to me?" A bitter laugh escapes her, "Oh I'm fine by the way after everything that happened with Alaric today, if you even care about that."

"Of course I do and if what Klaus said is true about us being part of his bloodline-"

"It was true!" Lola snaps as she points in Stefan's direction.

Stefan sighs as he bows his head, then looks back up at Lola with tears in his eyes, "So that means that we don't have much time left either. I just want-"

"You want what? You want a goodbye speech from me? You already had that yesterday and clearly everything I said to you meant nothing!" Lola seethes as she takes a step closer to him, "You don't get to come to me right now and say you're sorry or whatever bullshit you're going to say."

"Lola, please." Stefan pleads.

Lola groans as she runs her hands through her hair, "I don't wanna hear it, Stefan!" No emotion shows on her face, "I'm done with you, with Damon, with this stupid town. I wish I never came back to this hell hole. I wish you weren't my brothers because then we wouldn't have seen you in the 20s, you wouldn't have spoiled everything I had and I wouldn't have had to leave Klaus because of Damon in the 50s. The both of you are constantly ruining my happiness and I'm done." She steps even closer to him, words full of hatred, "You're not my brothers, you're not my family. As of right now, you mean absolutely nothing to me."

Elijah takes hold of Lola's hand, attempting to move her away, "Charlotte, we need to go."

Lola turns to walk away but stops in her step as she furrows her brows, turning back towards Stefan, "One more thing, I'm glad we're going to die and if I see you on the other side mark my words, Stefan, I will make it feel like you're in the burning pits of hell." She turns to walk away from him as she shouts back at him, "Make sure to pass that on to Damon as well because I'm sure you'll both be having a heart to heart without even giving me a thought."

Deeper into the woods, Elijah stand awaiting for his sister to arrive with Lola standing in the distance, not saying a word since her altercation with Stefan.

When Rebekah does arrive, Elijah turns to face her noticing her tear stained face, "He's gone, Elijah. There was nothing I could do to stop it."

Rebekah and Elijah walk towards each other and embrace, both letting the tears fall. Elijah pulls away from the hug, "Tyler Lockwood is dead, but the rest survived. You said that Niklaus turned their bloodline."

"I thought he did."

"It wasn't me, it wasn't Kol."

Rebekah shakes her head, "It wasn't me, Elijah. It was Niklaus, I'm sure of it."

Elijah composes himself for a moment before turning his attention back to Rebekah, "Then how are they still alive?"

Rebekah shakes her head as she wipes away stray tears, "I don't know." She frowns in Elijah's direction, "Lola?" Elijah nods and gestures behind Rebekah where Lola stands staring into the distance, as still as a statue. Rebekah slowly walks behind her, gently placing her hand on Lola's shoulder, "Hey, Lola, look at me."

Lola turns to face her, a weak smile on her face, "Hey Bex."

"Come here. It's okay to be upset."

Rebekah attempts to pull Lola into a hug but Lola steps back and shakes her head, "No, I can't."

"It's the healthy thing to do." Rebekah says softly, "Let it all out."

"I promised him I wouldn't cry." Lola whispers as she bows her head, she smiles faintly as she remembers her and Klaus' promise to each other, "It was only just the other morning we were both laughing and joking saying that if anything was to happen to either of us, we promised each other we wouldn't get upset." She looks at Rebekah, not crying but clearly there is sadness beneath her surface, "So, no I can't. I made a promise."

Lola turns away from both Rebekah and Elijah, Rebekah steps towards her, "Where are you going?"

"I just need some space." Lola replies back then vamp speeds away from them.

"I'm worried about her." Elijah admits.

Rebekah slowly turns back around to face her brother, "Lola's strong, she will be fine, she'll get through this."

Elijah smiles sadly, "She's always fine, that's her problem."

On the road on the outskirts of the woods, Lola lays in the middle of the cold dark road after hearing that Damon would always do this when something went wrong.

Like clockwork a car drives up to her, stopping a few feet away. A man in his early 20s runs out, tall, dark hair with a light stubble, "Hey, are you okay?"

Lola continues to lay in the middle of the road, her arms stretched out as she looks up to the starry sky, "I'm not okay, not even a little bit."

"Are you hurt? Let me call someone for you."

"My brother, Damon, always lays in the road after something bad happens." Lola explains to the stranger, "Kinda understand why now, it's pretty relaxing."

"Are you sure you're okay?" The man walks backwards to his car, "I'll just get my phone so we can call someone for..." As he turns to face his car, Lola appears in front of him. He steps back and looks at her in shock, "How did you do that?"

Lola tilts her head, "What's your name?"

"Alex."

"Have you ever lost someone, Alex?"

"Uh, yes."

Lola pats him on the shoulders, "I've had a rough couple of days. Well, actually it's just been a rough day. Let me give you the low down, Al, is it okay if I call you Al?" Before letting him respond, Lola continues as she begins to slowly circle around him like he's prey, "So, I was finally happy with the most perfect man. Granted he's killed a few people in his time but haven't we all done that, Al, eh?" She playfully hits him on his shoulder, "Then I got attacked by my friend who died but came back at this crazy alter ego, I then got free but then watched my brothers, one being a bunny eating weirdo, semi kill my perfect man to then have Damon, the laying in the road brother, snap my neck. Which isn't exactly fantastic, right?" She becomes face to face with him once more, narrowing her eyes at him, "You look a little pale, Adam, should I start over?"

"Uh, it's Alex." The man mumbles, in shock at everything he has just been told.

"Right!" Lola exclaims as she rolls her eyes to herself, "Anyway, so the said friend then killed my perfect man for good and I was supposed to die as well but it's not happened yet. Thus being here and meeting you."

The man shakes his head in disbelief at Lola, "You're crazy."

Lola shrugs her shoulders as she throws her hands up, "Maybe I am. I mean it's not like you're going to be able to tell anyone this because I'm going to kill you."

"W-what?"

Lola innocently smiles at him as she shrugs her shoulders, "No hard feelings, Al."

The man looks at her horrified as her fangs extend and dark veins appear under her eyes. He tries to run, but it's no use. Lola grabs hold of him and sinks her teeth into his neck, draining him of his blood.

This is what she needs right now. Lola needs to let go and it feels great. What feels like months since Lola last drank fresh blood straight from the vein, it's just as euphoric as ever. Lola takes a breather for a moment, tilting her head back as she slowly begins to let go until sinking her teeth into him once more. Listening to his heart beat become slower and slower.

"Charlotte, stop!" Elijah rushes over to Lola, pulling her off the man making him drop dead on the floor.

Lola pushes Elijah away from her, "Relax, Elijah. I just needed to let go a little." She swipes away the blood from the corner of her mouth, "I'll see you back at the house." And with that, she vanishes and heads back to the mansion.

---------------------------------------------------

After a very slow walk back to the house, Lola finally arrives. She opens the door to be greeted by silence, cold and dark silence. What felt like a home 24 hours ago now feels like a distant memory.

As Lola enters her and Klaus' bedroom, she is greeted with more silence. A safe place they would retrieve to, their sanctuary now nothing but darkness. Lola looks around the room feeling lost, the last time she was in this room they were planning on leaving here forever, together which has now been shattered.

An envelope catches Lola's eye, resting against the globe on the desk. The same globe that was used to plan the beginning of her new adventure with the love of her life.

Here's to starting our forever together.

That what reads on the front of the envelope. As she opens it, it reveals postcards of every country they were planning on visiting. Countries they have spoken about over the years and promising each other they wouldn't visit any of them without each other.

Lola holds them against her chest tight, as though she is holding onto the last thing that she has of Klaus.

"You lied to me." Lola whispers as she stares down at the postcards, "You said we were going to make it."

The promise she made to Klaus is soon to become broken, unable to fight the pain she has building up within. The warmth of tears trickle down her face now becoming unstoppable.

People always say there are five stages of grief you have to endure over time, but no one said it's possible to go through them all in the space of an hour.

Denial - none of this feels real, a part of Lola still expects Klaus to walk through those doors, taking her in his arms and never letting go. He cannot be killed, that's what he would always say.

Anger - Klaus promised forever together and now he's gone. Leaving Lola on her own to pick up the pieces of her broken heart. I should be angry, she thinks to herself, how can he leave me alone.

Bargaining - this wouldn't hurt as much if the switch was flipped. It's a simple thing to do, it only takes a moment and the pain would be gone. What's the worst that can happen? She thinks to herself.

Depression - not only has Lola lost the love of her life, her brothers are no longer her brothers. Betrayed by them countless times, not even checking in to see if she is okay after almost being killed by their former close friend. No one cares about you, she thinks, if they did they would be here with you.

Acceptance - it won't be much longer until Lola's life also comes to an end, being a part of Klaus' bloodline means she too will die. That's the acceptance she needs, accepting that the pain is going to end by her also dying. It will all be over soon, she assures herself.

And yet, as Lola paces around the room for that hour, nothing happens.

I should be dead.

I need to be dead so I can be back with Klaus.

Is this my punishment? For loving a man like Niklaus Mikaelson?

The anger builds up more as the tears continue to fall. Frustrated that Klaus' favourite scotch still stands when it is no longer needed, Lola smashes is against the floor. Lola felt something, almost like satisfaction by smashing something.

She does it again, now with the crystal glasses Klaus would always drink his favourite scotch out of. Now the globe, smashing it away just like their future has been smashed away. Breaking paintings in half, ripping up the bed spread, even the ornaments that are dotted about the room.

After hearing everything going on upstairs as he enters the house, Elijah rushes upstairs, standing in the doorway watching a distraught Lola smash up her bedroom, "Charlotte!"

Lola stops in her place, she looks over to Elijah, absolutely heartbroken as she sobs, "I can't do this, Elijah. I can't be in this world without him. Why aren't I dead yet?" She picks up a vase, smashing it against the wall, "I should be dead!"

Elijah steps further into the bedroom slowly, "Charlotte, I need you to calm down."

"I can't calm down!" Lola cries out, "I don't wanna be here anymore, I don't wanna feel like this. I just...I just can't do this without him." Aggressively running her hands through her hair, uncontrollably sobbing, gasping for breath in between each sentence, "I've lost him, I've lost my brothers, everyone I love is slowly leaving me and I can't do this anymore."

"Charlotte, please-"

"My brothers don't even love me, I mean one of them just snapped my neck! The other just stood there and watched him do so!" She shakes her head as she begins to pace around the room, "I can't be here." She bows her head making her way towards the door, "I need, I need to leave."

Elijah refuses by wrapping his arms around Lola from behind, knowing that this won't end well. Lola needs to be here with him and Rebekah, it's not a wise choice to let her be on her own.

Lola tries to fight out of Elijah's hold, "No, don't. No, Elijah."

But it's no use, Elijah is too strong and Lola is too weak, "Let go. Please." Elijah steps back, his back hitting the wall behind him, tears now streaming down his face having to deal with the heartbreak of losing his brother and seeing one of the few he has opened up to break in his arms. Elijah slides down the wall, still having Lola is his hold, "I need Nik." Both collapsing onto the floor, Lola giving up the fight and sobs against Elijah, "I need to be dead too. I- why am I still here? I should be dead."
