Chapter 3
"So this is your day job then?" Jason questions as he walks in the room, stopping at the bed his nephew is currently sleeping in.
"I'm surprised that he's your nephew," I tell him. "And how did you not you realize he wasn't feeling well today?"
"He looked fine when we were leaving this morning, I didn't see anything physically wrong with him, just wish he told me," he sighs as he sits down beside Oli, brushing his hair back.
"It's good that we caught it early, he most likely has the flu. He'll need lots of fluid, food that's easy to digest and sleep," I rattle off instructions to him.
"This is a fucking problem now. I have to get to work but I can't ask them to watch him for me," he mutters under his breath as the school bell rings. From the sound of it he doesn't have anyone to help him look after Oli while he goes in for his shift. It's silent for a moment before an idea crosses my mind. It's impulsive yes, and maybe not a smart decision but looking at the six-year-old sleeping, I think it's the best idea.
"Why don't you let me take care of him? If you can't find anyone to take care of him then let me do it. I am a qualified nurse after all," I suggest to him. He looks at me for a couple of seconds unsure and I let out a sigh. "Even though it's slightly unfair, you can't tell me you haven't done a background check on me after yesterday. My record is clean, even with my unsavoury past." He thinks for a moment before letting out his own sigh.
"Fine, but only because you're the only person that can help," he tells me.
"Great, wake him up and help him with his jacket while I grab my things," I tell him as I walk to my coat closet. I take off my lab coat, hanging it on the hook and I grab my jacket plus bag before locking the door closed.
"You're ready to go?" Jason questions with Oli in his arms, still asleep.
"Yeah, let me take his bag from you," I tell him. He hands it to me and I follow him out into the hall closing the office door behind me. "Where did you park?"
"Right at the front," he replies as we exit the school and I see a black BMW waiting by the steps.
"I'll follow your car," I tell him as I walk to the teacher's parking lot where my own black BMW is parked waiting for me. I open the trunk placing both of our bags before getting inside and starting the car, pulling it up beside his.
"Nice wheels," he says rolling down his window.
"Yours isn't bad either, let's get out of here." He pulls his car out of the school complex and I follow close behind him. It's been snowing throughout the day, so it's a pretty slow drive to their house. For fifteen minutes I'm behind him until he slows down in front of a two-story house.
He turns into the driveway and I park at the curb before turning off the engine. I watch as Jason gets out and carries Oli to the house, unlocking it and going inside. I get out of my car and grab his bag before following him.
"Lock the door behind you," he tells me as he places Oli on the sofa. I toe off my shoes and place his bag against the walls.
"You should go get him changed into something more comfortable while I check your kitchen," I say to him as I drape my coat over the sofa. I walk straight to the kitchen, tying my hair back and washing my hands before going through their cabinets and fridge. He keeps it well stocked so I won't have to worry about not having ingredients.
"Victoria, where do you want me to put Oli?" Jason calls out to me.
"Living room, I want to keep an eye on him," I call back to him. I grab things from their fridge and cupboard, placing it on the counter and then walk back out to where Jason is placing a blanket on Oli.
"I don't know what time I'll be back but I'll let you know later. Give me your number," he demands as he pulls out his phone. I give him my number, and I walk him to the front of the house. His hand reaches out holding onto my wrist loosely as we stand in front of one another.
"Jason?" I ask in a soft voice as he continues looking at me.
"Thanks for doing this Victoria," is all he says before pulling me forward and pressing a kiss onto my cheek. He gives me a smirk as he lets go of me as he saunters off to his car. My hand goes to my cheek and a warm feeling passes through me, his action leaves me feeling flustered but it's disturbed by a gust of wind. I go back inside locking the door behind and check on my sick patient.
"Ms. Marshall, what are you doing here? Where's uncle Jason?" Oli questions as he looks around for him.
"Your uncle went to work but I'm here to take care of you, is that okay?" I ask kneeling down, a small smile on my face. He looks at me for a couple of seconds before nodding. "And Oli, I'll give you a special privilege, you can call me Victoria or Tori if you'd like."
"I'll call you Tori," he says before coughing. I go to the kitchen and grab him a glass of water before making my way back to him.
"Here, drink this and relax while I make you something light to eat okay," I tell him once he's finished the water. I leave the television on for him as I go back to the kitchen. I grab pots and utensils as I set out to make some chicken soup for Oli, and fingers crossed he's able to eat it all.

"Hey Oli, how are you feeling now?" I ask as I walk into his room. After eating his soup, we watched some cartoons for an hour and a half before I decided he should get some sleep, even though it's only half-past seven. I sent him upstairs fifteen minutes ago so I could finish cleaning before grabbing the thermometer I found in their medicine cabinet plus some medicine for him.
"I don't feel well," he whispers as I kneel in front of him. He still looks flushed and although he's eaten I strongly suspect he has the stomach flu.
"I know, but let's get your temperature checked and you take some medication after," I tell him with a gentle smile as I smooth back his curly hair. I take his temperature again and now it's close to forty degrees celsius, he spiked up in the last couple of hours.
"Okay, let me pour you some medicine and then you can go to sleep. I'll keep a garbage can near your bed in case you wake up not feeling well," I tell him. I turn my body to grab the medicine I placed on his table when I hear him calling my name. I turn back around to see what he needs but instead, I'm met with throw up.
My eyes widen and I quickly grab the garbage can beside me as he empties his dinner. He heaves for another minute or two before moving back looking worse. When he gets his bearings, he realizes he got sick on me and he starts crying.
"Hey, don't worry. This is nothing," I say trying to calm him down.
"You're not mad?" he asks wiping his eyes. He must have thought I was mad for what happened but accident happen. I would have hugged him if I wasn't so gross right now. It's good that he's expelling whatever bug is bothering him, now I just have to worry about his fever.
"No, I'd rather it be me instead of you or your bed. C'mon, let's go get you cleaned up," I say with a soft smile. I lead him to the bathroom to brush his teeth again, and I wipe my sweater as best as I can with toilet paper. Once he's freshened up again I take him back to his bed.
"Okay, let me give you your medication and then you can go to sleep," I tell him as I pour out a dosage into the small plastic cup. I hand it to him and watch as he drinks it all, making a face at the taste. "I know, it doesn't taste good right?"
"It's gross," he says shaking his head.
"That may be true, but you need it to feel better. I'm going to go now but if you need me, call me, I'll be right downstairs," I instruct as I place the blankets around him. He nods his head, and I turn off the main light in the room, only his night light left to brighten the darkness. I grab the medicine and the garbage can and walk towards the door.
"Goodnight Tori," he whispers.
"Good night Oli, sweet dreams," I say turning back to face him with a smile. I leave the door slightly open so the lights in the house don't bother him but I can still hear him if he calls me. Now, time for me to throw this out and then bring this back to his room. I quickly go downstairs and I double bag the bag before running outside to throw it in the bin in front of the driveway.
"Fuck, it's freezing," I mutter to myself as I rush back inside. I lock the door and turn off the entry light before walking back into the living room. I hear my phone buzzing in my jacket and I pull it out to see an unknown number calling me.
"Hello?" I ask.
"Victoria, it's Jason. How's Oli doing?" he asks, his deep voice coming through the phone.
"He just went to sleep right now but he threw up before going to bed. I can now officially say that he has the stomach flu," I sigh, leaning against the armrest of the chair.
"Fuck, I wish I wasn't here right now," he snaps and I can picture him running his hand through his hair in frustration.
"Are you taking the day off tomorrow?" I ask him.
"I already planned to. I'll spend the day with him tomorrow," he answers.
"Then that's all that matters. You'll still be here to take care of him and even though you're not here physically, you're still doing it by calling to check and see if he's okay," I point out.
"You've got a point. I should probably be home by midnight," he tells me.
"I'll still be up," I reply. I look down at my clothes before realizing I might as well ask for a favour. "Hey Jason, do you mind if I borrow your shower?"
"For what?" he asks in confusion.
"Oli got sick on me earlier and do you mind if I use your washer?" I question.
"Fuck, sorry about that. Yeah, that's fine, you can borrow some of my clothes while yours is washing. Towels are in the closet across from the bathroom," he tells me.
"Don't worry about it, I can't hold it against him and thanks. I'll see you later," I say to him.
"See you later," he replies as he cuts the line. I take my phone and the garbage bin and go back upstairs, stopping in Oli's room to leave the bin beside his bed before walking to the bedroom at the end of the hall. I have a strong suspicion that this is Jason's room.
I open the door and I get a waft of the same spiciness I smelled on Jason when we met yesterday. I flick on the bedroom light taking in the navy, white, and black colour scheme and the California king-sized bed. I cross through the room and open the closet, grabbing the first clothing items I see. An oversized grey sweater and workout shorts.
"This should probably fit," I mutter to myself as I hold the shorts against me. Who would have thought I'd be wearing clothes belonging to my patient's uncle, his sexy uncle. I go to the bathroom, stopping by to grab a towel before stripping out of my clothes and leaving it on the floor. I hope in the shower and take a five-minute shower, using the only body wash I see.
I swiftly get out and dry myself, only putting back on my underwear so I can throw my bra in the wash as well. One thing for sure, I definitely smell like Jason and I must say it's intoxicating. I grab my dirty clothes and go back downstairs and check the rooms on the first floor for the laundry room.
When I find it I immediately put my clothes in the wash and go sit on the sofa for the next thirty minutes. I pull out my phone from the sweater pocket and see I have a missed call from Cora.
"It's about time you called me back," she says when she picks up.
"Sorry, I had my hands full with other things," I tell her.
"So where the fuck are you? I stopped by your place a little earlier but you weren't there," she questions.
"About that, I'm not at home right now," I confess.
"Who're you with? You're with a man right now aren't you? You got some tonight after how many years," she exclaims.
"Uh, well not quite. You remember that cop Haruto and I told you about yesterday?" I ask and I hear her breath hitch, ready to unleash a freakout. "Turns out his nephew goes to the elementary I'm at and he wasn't feeling well and now I'm at their placing watching over him while he's at work," I rush out.
"What! You met with him? And his nephew is at the school? This has to be fate," she says in a rush.
"I don't know about fate, I guess it's a small world," I tell her and I leave out the fact he kissed me on the cheek earlier.
"No, this is fate. I just know it," she disagrees.
"I still don't know about that. Anyways, I'm going to check on the kid but I'll talk to you later," I tell her before hanging up on her. I get up going back up and going into Oli's room to check on him. Just like earlier today, he's crying in his sleep. I bring the chair in front of his desk beside his bed and reach out, slowly stroking his hair, my fingertips brushing his scalp.
I watch as he slowly relaxes as his crying subsides. I take a tissue and softly dab at his face before fixing his blanket. I'll just sit here for the remainder of the time before going to finish my clothes. I sit there watching over him, and I don't even realize when I start nodding off, where the exhaustion came from I don't know.
I don't even hear when a certain someone comes home nor feel my body being moved onto a more comfortable surface. I certainly don't feel warm lips kiss my forehead as I continue my deep slumber.
