Chapter 18
"You're okay taking Oli with you?" Jason's voice comes through the speakers.
"Yeah, I'm just doing paperwork and then we'll go home," I answer as I fix my sweater before putting on my coat. "Besides, Charlotte is busy with Cleo and her new son so I can take Oli with me." It was so chaotic over the weekend with Cleo giving birth to her son,
"Okay, I'll let you go but call me if you need anything," he tells me.
"I will, see you," I say to him as he ends the call. I called my bank right when they opened this morning and told them I was coming to deal with what my mom left, better now than later. I grab my bag, double-checking to see if I have the papers Mr. Davis gave me last week before stepping out of my office and locking the door behind me. I walk next door to Oli's class to grab him since I told his teacher I'd be taking him home from now on.
"Hey Grace, I'm here for Oli," I say knocking on the door.
"He's ready to go Victoria," she answers. "I didn't realize you were friends with that young man," she says while Oli puts back on his jacket.
"Well, some things happened," I say with a sheepish smile. She looks at me for a couple of seconds before her face turns to one of understanding.
"Ah, young love," she says with a wistful smile.
"What, no, it's not love," I splutter waving my hands in front of me in disagreement.
"I beg to differ," she chuckles. "But I won't say a word."
"It's not love or anything Grace, and I'd appreciate it if you didn't. Anyways, Oli and I have to get going, we'll see you tomorrow," I tell her as Oli steps beside me.
"Bye Mrs. Valentina," Oli says with a wave of the hand.
"Bye Oli," she says waving back at him. We walk out of the classroom down the hall, Oli grabbing onto my hand, swinging it between us.
"Hey Oli, we're not going home right now, I need to do something before we go home," I tell him as we exit the school.
"What are we going to do?" he questions as we make our way to my car.
"I have a meeting I need to go to but when we're home and you're done with the homework you were given today we can watch a movie together," I suggest.
"I want to watch Finding Nemo!" he shouts.
"Alright, we'll watch that later," I chuckle as I unlock the car. He hands me his bag as he gets inside with me making sure he has his belt on before closing the door. I place his bag in the trunk before making my way to the front. I get inside, starting up the car and drive out of the school complex.
I spend the next thirty minutes driving to the bank, the only noise in the car coming from the radio and a cartoon Oli is watching on my phone. I look at the mirror chuckling at the expressions he's making, the complete joy on his face. We reach the bank, my appointment at four with ten minutes to spare. I turn off the engine, getting out to open the door for Oli as he hops out, pausing the show.
"Oli, can you hold onto my phone for me? I'll let you use it while I finish my things," I tell him as we walk to the front door.
"Okay," he answers as I open the door for us. I bypass the front counter going to the customer service desk instead.
"Hi, I have an appointment with Mr. Agresta," I tell the woman behind the customer service counter.
"What's your name?" she questions as she types on her computer.
"Victoria Marshall," I answer as I glance at Oli who's still preoccupied with the game on my phone.
"Victoria Marshall, let me see. A Victoria Marshall just came in and is already speaking with Mr. Agresta," she says looking back at me.
"What, that's not possible. I called this morning and I was told the banker that would be available at this time was Mr. Agresta," I say in confusion. What the fuck is going on?
"Can I see photo i.d and your debit card?" she questions. I reach into my bag grabbing my wallet and pulling out my driver's license and debit card. I hand them back to her and I guess she pulls up my files double-checking I am who I say I am. "Let me take you to Mr. Agresta," she says standing up and hands me back my cards. I tell Oli to pause the game for a moment as we follow the woman to the banker's office.
"Mr. Agresta, I would very much like to transfer all the money that was left behind into my account," a shrill voice yells. "I will be leaving in the next couple of days." Oh fuck, are you fucking kidding me? The day that I'm coming to do a withdrawal they're here as well. Maybe they heard about this place from Mr. Davis, but fuck. This takes the cake. Is she seriously trying to impersonate me? The woman that leads us here opens the door and we find Blaire standing in front of a man, both palms on the table as she continues to rant at him.
"Excuse me Mr. Agresta, sorry to interrupt," the woman says aloud and both parties turn to look at us and Blaire's facial expression turns to one of abhorrence.
"What can I do for Melinda?" the man questions.
"I believe this is the real Victoria Marshall you were waiting for," she says pointing a hand at me. The man looks at me for a couple of seconds as his look of frustration melts away, the wrinkles in his face smoothing out as a calm look takes over.
"Thank you for coming Ms. Marshall, it seems there was a mishap," he says eyeing Blaire with irritation.
"You can't be serious? I'm the real Victoria Marshall, she's the one impersonating as me," she sneers, pointing a finger at me.
"Even if you say that, this Victoria here looks exactly like her mother," he tells her. I shift in front of Oli so he doesn't have to hear what's going on.
"Why, because they're both black?" she snaps. Of all things she had to say was the colour card.
"The colour of her skin has nothing to do with this," he says and it looks like he's going to snap. "Whenever the late Mrs. Marshall came here, she's always shown me pictures of her daughter growing up over the years. You look exactly like your mother," he says looking at me.
"Honestly Blaire, I never knew about you until last week, knowing your mom is already troublesome enough. It's my third time seeing you and each time it's like a thorn is digging deeper into my side," I say as I take my phone back from Oli to shoot a text to Jason. "I'm pretty sure the bank is going to call them but I'll also reach out as well. Identity fraud? I hope you can explain that to the police," I say with a cold grin.
"I think it's time you leave, Ms. Blaire, if that is even you're name," Mr. Agresta says as he stands. Blaire grabs her purse, walking to leave but I move to stand in front of her, blocking her so she can hear the last thing I have to say.
"I told you I didn't want to see you ever again and now here we are. Good luck with the police because I wonder how long you'll be jailed for this. Tell Devin and Vanessa I hope they don't try anything either, they should go back to Quebec don't you think?" I whisper menacingly. She looks at me, the cold amusement clear on my face at her demise. I can see she's trying to keep the intimidating act but there are little cracks of doubt shining through. She doesn't say anything as she shoves past me with Melinda leading her back to the front of the bank.
"Now that is done with, Ms. Marshall, please come in and we can discuss the matter at hand," Mr. Agresta says waving the two of us forward. I walk in closing the door behind me, as Oli sits in one of the chairs in front of the table.
"Your son?" he questions.
"No, my partner's nephew," I answer as I sit beside Oli.
"I see. I believe your mother's lawyer should have given you the papers your mother left you," he asks getting straight to business.
"Yes, I have them here," I reply as I hand him everything Mr. Davis gave me last week. He takes a look at them before singling out one sheet and opening his computer.
"Okay Ms. Marshall, I have the account pulled up here," he says as he turns the screen to face me. "This is how much your mother left you." I look at the numbers on the screen, my eyes widening as I count them; one, two; count seven numbers. One million, two hundred and twenty-five thousand is how much is sitting in that account that's now mine.
"I'm shocked," I whisper. "I thought it was a million flat and a couple of dollars."
"Your mother loved you very much and she only wanted the best for you in case anything happened to her," Mr. Agresta tells me.
"I'm still shocked, it's mind-boggling," I chuckle.
"I understand, it's not what you were expecting but it is what it is, I can't change it," he tells me. "Now, the next matter to look at is what you will be doing with that money."
"I planned this out over the weekend and I'm going to be splitting it into four categories. The first portion will go to this address," I say giving him a piece of paper. "I was in a shelter for a couple of years after I left Quebec and the ladies at that place really helped me and cared for me while I was there. The day I was leaving they told me not to come back or look back but I promised one day I would send funding to support them and I'm doing that now." He looks at me for a couple of seconds as he takes the paper from me but doesn't raise the question of why I was there.
"Do you want them to know it was from you or for it to be anonymous?" he questions.
"Anonymous please," I answer.
"Okay," he says as he makes note of it. "Where's the second portion going to?"
"The second portion is going to the pediatric ward at the local hospital. I work there part-time and I would love for it to also be a more fun environment for the kids that stay there," I tell him. "I'd also like to remain anonymous with that as well. I'd rather not have stories going around at my workplace."
"Okay, and the third?" he asks.
"The third portion will stay in this account. When I have a family in the future, I'll do what my mom did and leave something in case anything happens to me. The fourth portion I'll be taking for myself," I tell him.
"Okay, since we're splitting it into fourths in total it should be," he trails off as he pulls out a calculator. "In total each will be three hundred six thousand, two hundred fifty dollars."
"That sounds perfect," I say with a relieved smile.
"Let me start removing the money and pulling out checks and you'll be good to go," he says as he turns his computer back to him. I feel good distributing the money like that. One million is too much for one person and I know I can help others with this. I glance over at Oli who's been quietly sitting and watching us, when he sees me looking at him he gives me a toothy grin. I grin back at him as I reach out to ruffle his hair, my mind at ease now that this business can be officially closed.

"Is there anywhere else I have to sign?" I question as I hand back the papers to Mr. Agresta.
"No, I've removed all the money that was need to be removed and transferred your portion to your account," he answers as he scans it over. I have to say he worked pretty efficiently, finishing all this in twenty minutes. I now have full access to the second account and everything else has been divided.
"Thank you so much Mr. Agresta," I say standing up to shake his hand.
"It was a pleasure doing business with you and your mother," he says as he shakes my hand before looking down at Oli. "And to you kind sir, for patiently waiting for us, let me give you this." He opens a drawer and holds out a pack of gummy worms. Oli looks at it in excitement before looking at me and I nod my head he can take it. "Whenever parents come with children I always like to give them something for their patience," he tells me.
"That's very nice of you," I chuckle. "We'll get going now but I will contact you again if there is anything I need."
"Please do Ms. Marshall, I was able to help your mother and I will help you as well," he says with a warm smile. I open the door for Oli and I and we walk back out, I stop to say thank you to the Melinda, the receptionist that helped earlier before we're back outside.
"Time to go home?" Oli asks as he takes my hand as we walk to my car.
"Time to go home," I reply as I unlock the door. He hops inside and as I watch to make sure he's buckled I tell him, "Thank you for being awesome while I finished my work Oli."
"You're welcome," he says happily as I hand him back my phone for the ride home. I shut his door and as I'm opening mine, I notice two men in the parking lot, one staring at me and the other with his hood up, face downcast. I feel a little unnerved as they look but I stare back, not wanting to back down.
The second man with his hood takes it off and I feel my hands getting cold, well colder than they already are since I'm gripping the cold metal handles. A cold sweat washes over me as I look at the second man, not someone I recognize but something he has I'd know from anywhere. The sakura tattoo with dripping petals to look like blood.
Fuck, they've found me. I get inside, shutting the door quickly as one of them shouts and gets inside the car they were standing beside and the other runs up to mine. C'mon, c'mon, start faster. The man is closing the distance and looks ready to jump, but I quickly drive out of the parking space towards the street. I check to see if there are any cars before merging into the traffic. I take a look at the mirror and see the other leaving as well following behind me.
"Hey Oli, can you hand me my phone?" I ask him. He passes it over to me and I quickly dial up the number of the man I know that will help. If I get caught is one story but as I look at the innocent kid in the back, I know I can't deal with this alone.
"Hey sweetheart, you're finished at the bank?" he greets once he picks up. I merge between cars and just as I'm passing the light, shots are being fired behind us. "Sweetheart, Victoria, I heard gunshots. Where are you? What's going on?" His tone shifts into one of protectiveness and I wish this wasn't happening right now. I look at my side mirror to see the man in the passenger seat lean outside his window, a gun in his hand.
"Jason, we have a problem."

A/N Did I just leave it there? Yes, yes I did. Do you wish there was more? I bet you do but you'll have to wait for chapter 19! What's up everyone, how are you all doing? The virus is still hitting hard in the world, but I hope wherever you are you and your loved ones are safe ♥
So the money has now been dealt with, and I saw a while back someone saying she should start up a doctor's office if I'm not wrong. It was a good suggestion but since she's a nurse and not a doctor, I figured she could send it off elsewhere.
But besides that, Blaire going to jail? Check. But now we're diving into some crazy s**** And I swear, I kept writing Oli's name as Wren. Guess T.E.C is still stuck in my head but anyways, be sure to leave your thoughts of the chapter in the comments!
And before I forget I thought I'd address this and what I'm known for is being blunt so here it goes. Most probably some of you might be thinking this is going way to fast, but in all honesty I think it's a pretty good pace since it's impossible [unrealistic] to write a chapter for every single day.
