You silently stared at the window beside you, not really listening to the talk going on in the front seats. You were focused on the landscape, which stretched out as the trees moved with the car...and as it went on, there was an particular element that had caught your attention.
«...is all this fog normal?» You casually asked your parents, a little surprised by the climate change, especially if you didn't expect from some small country town. Or so you thought about the place you were heading to.
«Well...maybe it's gotten thicker than I remember, but I think it's just normal.» Of course, your mother answered with an enthusiasm different from yours «That's Haddonfield after all.»
Your father didn't take his eyes off the road, but he already imagined his wife's dazzling smile as she said that; obviously, when your mother had offered to go back to Haddonfield for a couple of days, you didn't say no, curious to know where your mother had grown up. Nothing less than a quiet town, you had thought the same moment you looked out the window again.
And maybe even too much...when your car crossed the threshold, you saw houses close together and on both sides of the road and gardens with trees and neatly cut grass; unlike large cities, there were no tall buildings in the distance and most probably, people who lived there were already old.
«Damn, this place hasn't changed a bit huh?» Your mother's eyes widened when she saw the same city as last time «And also Mr. Perry hasn't stopped decorating the house in that way. It's awful!»
Just then, you caught a house garishly decorated with pumpkin lanterns and cobwebs, as if it were haunted and was really fun to look at, also for someone like you who didn't have such a big obsession with the Halloween. In fact, you usually spent your October 31 in a very ordinary way and rarely wasted your time looking for some horror movies to celebrate the happy event...so, it was a pity that you ended up in a place that seemed to love this night a lot.
«There, it's the white house on the right.» Your mother pointed at an old-fashioned house, but which had undergone restoration work to become so pretty on the outside at the same time «But don't be fooled. I'm sure my mom left everything the same inside.»
You smiled when she said that and also at the idea of meeting your grandmother, because you were just a child when saw her last time and your mother spoke of her only a few times; anyway, you were sure she was a loving woman, as well as lonely after your grandfather's death.
Or that was what you believed, before an old woman went out on the doorstep with a clear frown on her forehead, definitely a normal welcome from that area...
«I see you in great shape...how are you, mom?» Your mother didn't notice that, or she simply pretended, when she got out of the car to go and hug her own mother «What? Not happy to see me after so long?!»
The older one returned the gesture, wrapping her daughter in the arms, but her eyes quickly caught up with the other two figures who were approaching from the sidewalk.
«Of course I'm happy, I've been waiting a long time for your visit, my dear.» She answered with a softer smile this time «And your daughter...how much she has grown, she's a beautiful girl now!»
You looked away for a second, as your mother burst out laughing, honestly she didn't understand why you were embarrassed and your father was too busy retrieving the bags to notice that...anyway, when your grandma invited your family inside her house, you couldn't help but rub your nose because of the dust in the air.
«Hell mom, how long has it been since you've scrubbed this place??» Your mother exclaimed and sighed as she dragged a finger across the surface of a small table «There's dust everywhere!»
But the woman just nodded silently, not really interested in the thing, and continued to show you the rest of the house. Upstairs, your room faced your parents' one, leaving you with a simple visual from the window; except for a very old house across the street with a couple of trees around, there was nothing else to see and you just put your suitcase down to take a look at the phone.
Apparently, Haddonfield wasn't old enough to not have wi-fi and you let out a sigh of relief, at least you knew what to do to survive those three days...
But, as you were busy putting away your stuff, you realized that you had left something in the car and so, you hurried down the stairs to head for the front door. And when you opened it, you met a good-looking big boy, whose eyes were far too wide to expect someone like you there.
«Is...is Mrs. Johnson at home?» He asked looking away over your shoulder, yet returning to your eyes most of the time «She asked me to take a look at the back garden...radishes don't grow well.»
Of course, how could you know something like that and when the boy started scratching the back of his head nervously, you started giggling under your breath.
«Well, I guess I should let you in then.» You said opening the door wider «I'm her granddaughter, I came to visit her for a couple of days.»
But unexpectedly, when you introduced yourself with a hand raised towards him and a kind smile on your lips, he didn't try to return your friendly gesture, nor introduce himself with his own name...you had to admit his attitude wasn't very consistent.
«Uhm, you can find my grandma inside anyway.» You added before walking out the door, ignoring the silent guy.
You just smiled before turning around, maybe you had been rude talking to a stranger without caring who he was, but it was also true that your stay there would be short and you didn't need to worry about it so much...in fact, when you returned home with your handbag in hand, the unknown boy was already gone.
«Mmm, I guess people aren't very friendly here, or is just the Halloween mood?» You wondered in a mocking tone, ignoring the fact that your mother was listening behind the corner of a wall.
«We just arrived and you already don't like it?» She crossed her arms impatiently «I know this place isn't Chicago, Y/n, but I swear this place was even worse when I was a teenager so...it's pretty good now.»
«If you say so.» You shrugged, not really sure if this place was really "pretty" as your mother described it «But don't you think it's weird to go to someone's house without even introducing yourself? For me it is.»
«Maybe it's not the first time that boy's come here to do some work for your grandma, don't you think?» As usual, your mother never missed an opportunity to prove you wrong.
«After all, we are the outsiders here.»
You spied her returning to the dining room, before walking up the stairs back to your temporary bedroom. She was right, in a way, there was no point in making friends with locals whose names you wouldn't even remember later.
«Don't worry Y/n, it's only three days...nothing more.» You thought silently, checking one last time before getting ready for dinner.

In a few minutes, you forgot the presence of dust when your nose was captured by the pleasant smell coming from the oven. At least, your grandmother was a perfect kitchen lady...
«I hope you haven't become a vegetarian, my dear, because my roast beef is still very good!» Your grandmother joked as she placed the large plate in the center of the table, obviously speaking to her daughter.
«Almost. Until we went to a vegan restaurant and swore she would never go back.» You replied in the same mood, thus making your father laugh to himself and your mother sulked at you for the rest of the evening.
Well, even your grandmother drew a smile in front of your story, before hiding it behind a long sip from her glass.
«Your mother said the same thing time ago, when promised never come back here...»
Definitely, those words caught everyone's attention, making you stop eating for a better comprehension. You didn't know why, but your mother seemed quite disturbed by that and because of that, the atmosphere on the table was suddenly changed.
«You know why I did it...don't pretend everything was normal.» There, it seemed strange to you to see your mother so agitated and serious all of sudden, as if she didn't want to continue the discussion.
But as she well knew, your grandmother would rather breathe fire than shut up...
«You know very well what really happened that night...» The older woman added, ignoring her still full plate «And you still ignore it after twenty-five years. I take it you haven't said anything to them yet–»
«Again, there's nothing to say!» Your mother stopped her with high tones and slapped the palms on the table to finally call for silence «Listen mom, I came back here to see you, so please, spend these days with your family in the most enjoyable way possible...okay??»
Your father squeezed your mother's hand to try to calm her down, as your grandma stared at her the whole time. She could be a mood breaker and also your mother warned you about the old woman's attitude; but for you, this situation seemed surreal and strange and you were sure someone here was hiding something.
But now the question was, who was lying between them...
The dinner proceeded just naturally that only the noises of the cutlery were barely audible inside the room. Until your mother's chair rattled when she stood up.
«I'm a little tired, I think I'll go to bed.» That was obviously bullshit, yet your grandmother didn't try to stop her. Then, your father decided to join her and check if she was okay, leaving you alone with the landlady in the meantime.
You didn't know why, but you felt a little uncomfortable with it, as if she already sensed your intent.
«You want to ask me something, just tell me dear.» The old woman chuckled to herself and that eased the pressure which still hovered there «I don't bite.»
Sure, you took a deep breath before speaking.
«Actually yes...what happened twenty-five years ago?» You asked, hoping your curiosity would be satisfied with your grandmother; at that point, she got up, cleared the table and walked towards the kitchen, pausing for a moment.
«If you really want to know, come with me.»
You got up almost automatically and followed the old woman into a smaller room, which faced the street. It was quite dark outside, but you could see the lights from the pumpkin lanterns that the neighbors had displayed in front of their houses...and right there, you noticed something unusual, both your grandmother's house and the one opposite it had no external ornaments.
«There was a time when celebrating Halloween night was good...there was music and laughter and the kids could run free around town, tricking-or-treating...» She started with a melancholy note in her voice, so different from the wary, reprehensible look she had sounded earlier.
«...until that night came. And everything was never the same again.»
You listened to her intensely and with your eyes, you followed the direction of her finger pointing towards the window in front of you. Towards the house.
«A family used to live there, time ago. They were the Myers.» Your grandma spoke again «Your mother knew them very well, especially the eldest daughter, Judith. They went to school together and became best friends. Until...»
«Until what? Please continue.» Heck, you couldn't contain your urge to know the rest and your grandma seemed grateful to be able to continue.
«If your mother and Judith started seeing each other less and less, the same couldn't be said with her younger brother...after that, Emily started to babysit him when he was left alone at home and so it happened on Halloween day. Just that...»
«Something happened?» You casually guessed, but unfortunately for you, you said right and the other woman just hold her breath; by now, there was no reason to hide such a fact - to hide the truth, because it would have surfaced on its own, one day...and with serious consequences.
«...during that night, your mother–»
«You have to stop now!!!»
Suddenly, you and your grandma turned to see your mother just come down the stairs with a furious expression on her face.
«Mom, listen...» You tried to calm her down someway, but she didn't listen to you at all.
«Don't try to put your weird ideas into my daughter's head, okay!? Or I swear I'll never set foot in this house again!» After that, you obeyed your mother when she told you to leave with her, but at the same time you felt sorry for your grandma and the fact that the two women kept arguing for no reason.
«Hey, it was you who told me to enjoy these holidays, so why are you the one acting weird now...what's the matter?» You asked and right there, your father appeared and wrapped his arm tightly around her.
«Y/n is right. Please Emily, tell us what we can do...do you want us to leave?»
«It's all right, darling.» Still, she said it with swollen eyes «And I don't want this to ruin our vacation...I'll do my best to check myself next time.»
Your father hugged her in the end, he knew very well when your mother could be fragile in these moments and you knew she wasn't the aggressive type...so, it was clear that something happened when she was younger and judging from your grandma's story, the Myers family had something to do with it. Especially Judith.
«I wonder if it's possible to talk to them...» You thought as you walked back to your room. Later, you went to your phone and noticed some notifications on the screen, however your interest in reading them was very low and you dropped the phone on the bed, heading to the window instead.
When you first noticed it, you thought that house was abandoned, until you saw a light coming out of one of the first floor windows. It was faint and yellowish, maybe from some kind of old lamp, judging by the age of the house...curious to see what else you might find, you used your phone's camera to zoom in when suddenly a shadow passed in front of it, leaving you with a dumbfounded expression.
«So, there is someone in the house...»
You stayed in the same position for a while, like some stalker, waiting to see something in the darkness, but nothing. The shadow seemed to have disappeared, or maybe it was just your imagination...
Until the light was turned off, flaring up intermittently.
«What's that now...?» You sighed with your mouth ajar and without blinking your eyes; you wanted to understand what was happening and moved closer through the frame, stopping when you focused just right.
When the light turned on, the shadow from earlier appeared again and this time, his features were clearly human to you. It was standing in front of the window, but you didn't know if was looking out or inside the house and that was pretty creepy. But at the same time, you couldn't stop looking, because you wanted to figure out exactly who it was...
Anyway, you were so wrapped up in it, you didn't notice a palm had landed on your shoulder in that moment.
«Damn Y/n, did you hear me or not? What are you doing?» You heard your mother's voice behind you and turned around with the breath still left in your lungs.
«O-of course not! Who comes in suddenly without knocking?!» You complained about her bad manners, but without really being angry. Meanwhile, your mother wondered what you were doing in front of the window.
«That's where the Myers live, right? Grandma tells me that you knew them very well...»
«Yes, that was their home. But seems no one lives there now.» Her answer didn't convince you, of course, not after you actually saw someone in there.
«I don't think so, I just saw something near the window.» After that, you went to check what you had seen with your mother; but when you did, the house appeared completely dark and silent in front of you two.
«Really, I'm sure I saw–»
«Now you also understand how stressful your grandmother can be sometimes...» The other woman flashed a smile before reaching up and stroking your arms «But I promise you, there won't be another scene like the one of earlier, okay?»
You nodded and although you were old enough for that, you let your mother kiss you goodnight on the forehead before she went away.
«Tomorrow it will be better. I promise you.»
«Sure it will, don't worry mom.» You hugged her too, putting the rest aside «And now go to bed, you're very tired!»
Emily just smiled, proud to have a daughter as caring and careful as you...and you were happy to see her relaxed again, in spite of everything.
You also went to bed a couple of hours later. Definitely, you had seen and heard rather strange things, but you still tried to close your eyes and let the day finally pass; except for the story your grandma had told you and for the silhouette you had seen in the Myers' house, of course...
...those were stuck in your mind even in your best dreams.
