Chapter 30
"I know Jason said he wants the two of us to talk to Georgia but I want you to leave the questioning to me," I say to Nash once Jason is out of earshot. He looks at me in confusion before opening his mouth to reply and I put my hand up to stop him. "We both get along with her yes but between the two of us, she's closer to me than you." I watch his expression for a moment as understanding flickers across his face.
"And you want to use that to your advantage," he concludes and I nod my head. If Nash and I go to her she will probably have a little more control over her emotions since it would be an obvious police interview. But if I go to talk to her there's a likelier chance she'll let her guard down since she trusts me and will automatically assume that I don't suspect her.
"As much as I'd rather not do that, we don't have a choice. Right now I'm working on an ongoing investigation and at the moment I can't see her as a friend," I tell him honestly. "I've seen investigations over the years get screwed up when it's looked at subjectively instead of objectively. She's in the forensics team that's investigating what the drug does to the body while her brother was working on making it, I can't ignore those two things."
"I agree, we can't afford to fuck this up so if you think this is the best way to go then I've got your back in this," he tells me before his lips curl up into a smug smile. "Besides, you're hardly wrong about things."
"So you'll talk to Jason for me?" I ask him as he nods his head. "Perfect, I'll see you later okay?" I tell him before leaning up to kiss his cheek quickly. I turn to walk back to our office when I feel his hand on my wrist pulling me back so I bump into his solid chest.
"C'mon, you can give a better goodbye than that," he says in a low voice but I roll my eyes as I tilt my head up to look at him. I turn in his hold to kiss him on the lips, drawing it out for a couple of seconds before slowly pulling back to look at him, a deadpan expression on my face.
"Better?" I ask him as he smirks at me.
"Better," he replies as he releases me, letting me walk away from him. I'm just thankful nobody was passing by here to see that because as much as I'd love to continue making out with my sexy boyfriend I'd rather not be top gossip here. I grab my jacket and my laptop I use here at the precinct before leaving the precinct to go to my car. My phone starts ringing as I start my car and I already know who it is without having to check caller i.d.
"I believe Nash already let you know what I'm up to," I say as I drive out onto the streets.
"He did but I know you're also thinking ahead of wanting to search her office to make sure she's not a suspect so I wanted to tell you I already got a warrant approved yesterday," Jason tells me and my face lights up at the news.
"I was planning to call you when I reached there to tell you I was going to search anyways but now I can do it legally," I say and I can feel the exasperation coming through the phone.
"Yes, I don't need nor want a repeat of last time. You're a prime example of why we don't do things without thinking first," he replies and I internally wince at the memory of a past investigation when I rushed into things without a warrant. Not only could the evidence I found not be used in court but I was put on desk duty for two months; worst two months of my life. "And I've also thought ahead to order that Georgia not be informed that you're investigating her."
"It's like you read my mind, I have a spare USB that I'm planning to-"
"You don't need to give me a step-by-step of how you'll do things, just make sure to get it done Natalia," he says interrupting me.
"You got it Chief," I reply before hanging up. It's another two minutes of driving before I reach the lab and pull into the lot. I open my glove compartment rifling through papers before my fingers close around my trusty USB. Back when I first started doing investigational work, during my free time I worked on creating a computer virus, specifically a remote one that would allow me to see what was happening on a computer in real time.
It's my personal masterpiece that's worked to my advantage when collecting evidence and the beauty of it is that it will run in the background when the computer is in use, so undetected that even virus protection will think it's nothing. The best part is that once it's plugged in, after letting it stay for a minute the virus will automatically enter the computer until I decide that it needs to be deactivated.
"As always Natalia make sure to get the job done," I mutter to myself as I put the USB into my pocket before stepping out of my car and making my way to the building. I go straight to Georgia's office, knocking on the open door and immediately gaining her attention.
"I knew you'd be coming by at some point," she says with a sigh as I walk inside closing the door behind me. "I got a call from him that he was arrested and then he told me why, I was just dumbfounded you know?"
"Trust me, when I saw a photo of you at his workspace, it was the last thing I was expecting," I reply as I sit across from her. "You should know he lawyered up and is refusing to speak to us."
"I'll be straightforward with you, I had no idea he was doing all of this. Why would he be doing this in the first place I don't understand. He's not an idiot to not realize that I'd most likely be working on this case but to find out my own brother had a hand in this whole mess, I'm furious," she says in anger, her brow furrowed deeply from her emotions.
"Rightfully so, he ethically went against what he does for his job," I say and she nods her head.
"Have you found anyone else? Is he working with anyone else?" she asks me, eyes flickering to and away from mine, I take mental note of that before I shake my head.
"We're still in the process of seeing who he might be working with but legally he and whoever he's working with will have a lot of charges laid against them," I tell her and she just sighs as she puts her head in her hands.
"I hope I can at least have a chance to talk to him again and advise him to cooperate with you all," she says as she lifts her head to look at me, face pleading for my help.
"I'll run it by my Chief and see what he says," I say to her, I can't make any promises to her but I can try for her. Her phone ringing interrupts the tenseness in the room and I watch her answer the phone before abruptly standing up.
"I'll be back in a couple of minutes, I need to head downstairs to the labs to take care of an issue," she tells me before walking out, the door softly closing behind her. That phone call at this moment is perfect, I couldn't ask for a more perfect timing.
I quickly survey the room looking at each corner and double-check to see if there are any cameras set up for surveillance in her office. When I don't see any I quickly jump from my seat before going around Georgia's desk, bending down and plugging in my USB.
My feet are tapping on the ground as I wait for the virus to load on her computer. Seconds are being counted in my head, depending on the issue she's going to deal with she might be back here quicker than expected. There are roughly twenty seconds left when I hear Georgia's voice loudly coming back down the hall. Shit, I need ten more seconds and I'm good to go. As soon as I see the USB flashing green I quickly take it out and scramble back around to the chair just as the door was opening.
"You're back so soon?" I ask her, my outer facade is calm and collected but inside I'm crying with relief.
"They called me to tell me there's an issue in the lab and then they call back saying it's solved and results have been sent over," she says with a shake of the head.
"Since you're now busy I'll get going but I'll remember to talk to the Chief about your brother," I tell her as I stand from my seat.
"Alright, thank you so much," she says to me as I walk back out of her office. The moment I'm in my car I'm reaching behind my seat for my laptop, powering it on before accessing the new file for Georgia's computer. I spend five minutes making sure that I have complete access before closing my laptop and putting it on the passenger seat. Although there was the chance of me being caught, so far everything has worked out in my favour.

"And you couldn't do this at your desk because?" Jason asks across from me.
"Because right now you're the only one that knows I have access to Georgia's computer and I'd rather not have to answer questions on what I'm doing nor how I got access," I reply to Jason as I tap away on my laptop. As soon as I came back here from the forensics lab I went straight to Jason's office to start working, that was two hours ago. I've currently taken over the sofa in his office while he's been taking phone calls but also looking at me in confusion.
"You haven't even mentioned this to Nash?" he asks me and I shake my head before lifting it to look at him.
"Nash said that anything I do that goes further into the hacking side I should keep to myself, the fewer people that know the better. It'll let us catch people off guard if they think we're not investigating them," I explain to him. "And this is something that I've still only shared with you only because you're my superior and your knowing keeps me out of being in legal trouble so it's a win-win."
"Fair enough, have you found anything?" he asks as he drops the topic.
"Nothing yet but I've been going through recently deleted files, a massive amount of deleted files. And as we obviously know when we come across deleted files it means that someone is trying to hide something," I tell him as I go back to recovering what I want to look into. I'll be honest, Georgia did put up a good farce at acting sad plus shocked that her brother was arrested and if I wasn't trained to look for signs of deception I might have bought into it. Even though she tried to hide it I could pick up her nerves very easily which means she obviously knows more than she's letting on. I'm pulled out of my thoughts when I hear the door opening and Nash's voice coming through.
"So this is where you've been hiding since you came back?" he asks and I can feel his eyes trail onto me.
"Yeah, there were some things I needed to work on," I reply to him and he nods his head accepting my answer, already guessing that I'm working on something more, private.
"What'd you need Nash?" Jason asks him.
"Just wanted to let you know Prosecutor Huxley is here and we're going try questioning him again with his lawyer now present," Nash tells him.
"Alright, go ahead and start, I'll be down in a couple of minutes," Jason orders as Nash walks back out.
"You know Georgia asked me to ask you to let her talk to her brother in hopes of getting him to cooperate," I tell Jason and I feel the heavy silence in the room from the words. "Of course I said I would pass the message along but that doesn't mean I want her anywhere near him right now. Take a look at what I found." I stand up from the sofa and place my laptop on his desk as he reads the screen. His brow shoots up in the air before looking up at me and turning to back to the screen.
"We didn't reveal this to the media and we made sure everyone who's involved in the case made sure to keep this under wraps," he says, his brow furrowing in thought. The warehouse we raided weeks back where me and Lucas got shot at, she has a detailed inventory of everything that was in there.
"This shit is fucked up. Her brother worked in making those tablets and if I'm going guess what her role is in this, she's noting down how it affects the body since she's in forensics," he says in frustration as he pushes back my laptop towards me.
"And this is a shared file between the two on a treatment to reverse the effects once it's ingested if they're transported to a hospital in time," I say as I open a spreadsheet filled with calculations, elements and other notes.
"I want her arrested, right now in fact," he says in a determined tone.
"Let's just wait, I can already see how this is going to play out," I say as I start pacing in front of him. "Oliver will barter for a lighter sentence in return for giving the treatment to help anyone who takes that tablet in the future. Georgia of course is leading the case in the forensics aspect and I want her input before moving in to arrest her," I explain as he processes my words.
"Alright, we'll wait it out for the moment but the second Oliver gives that up we move in to arrest her," he says and I move back to the sofa, a smirk tugging at my lips. There's still one thing that's tugging at my mind, the total data purge on her computer since it doesn't make sense that she could do this on her own. I continue digging through the computer history bypassing more files related to what she was working on with Oliver when I finally hit it.
"Fuck, shit," I say aloud in shock.
"What happened? What did you find?" Jason questions looking startled for a moment from my loud cursing. I just found the final missing piece of the puzzle, though I wish I had found this much sooner. Better late than never I guess.

A/N Hi! How are you all? When I was working on this chapter I was checking the last time I updated this story and I was like 'Damn, I haven't looked at this since March', for real though I'm so excited to have a new chapter up. And before working on the chapter, the story plus the other two in the series went through a cover change (once again) but hopefully this will be the last. After thirty chapters I'm still having so much fun writing out Natalia's character plus the rest and now I'm working on how to finalize the story because what I had in mind back in March I thought of something completely different to work with.
But anyways, be sure to leave your thoughts on the chapter in the comments because I love going through them! And thank you for the 30k+ views of the story, I hope you continue to enjoy the story!
