Chapter 25

It's like the missing pieces of the puzzle are finally starting to connect. This is the break we were waiting for. Nash was already on the phone with Jason while I continued skimming through page after page of information but that was after making sure Jade was okay to go back to sleep.

"Is that Georgia?" I ask as we pull into the precinct. I look at the old woman who's standing in front of the precinct doors, coffee in hand as she looks down at her phone.

"She probably came to ask about Aurora," Nash says as he parks the car and I reach into the back to grab my bag.

"She can ask how she's doing but that's just about it," I answer as we get out of the car. "Georgia!" I call out to her.

"Natalia, Nash, good morning to both of you," she says as we walk up to her.

"Good morning Georgia," Nash says to her as he holds the door open for the two of us.

"You're here to know how Aurora is doing right?" I ask her, there's no need to drag out why she's here, I like to get straight to the point with these types of things. Nash elbows my side, nodding his head that he's going on ahead while I talk with Georgia.

"Yes, but what happened to you?" she says as she looks at my face and I sigh as I shake my head.

"The woman you're here to see did this to me but honestly it's nothing in comparison to her condition," I tell her as we walk inside. I lead us to one of the empty offices near the front desk, closing the door a bit for privacy.

"Do you know how serious the charges will be for Aurora? Will it be just a couple of months or a year or two?" she questions.

"I can't say everything that she'll be charged for except for the one that's directly connected to me. She came to my apartment with a gun and almost killed me and even though she wouldn't have done anything to Jade, she could have gotten injured or worse in the crossfire," I tell her and she just closes her eyes as she digests that bit of information.

"What on earth has that woman gotten herself into that she'd try to kill you," she says quietly. "Would I be able to see her?"

"Not right now, she's still in a holding cell here at the precinct since we're still in the process of questioning her but once she's moved to a provincial prison you should be able to visit her if she agrees to it," I explain and she nods her head when she hears that.

"I hope I'll be able to, this just has to be a misunderstanding, there's no reason for her to go out and attack you like that," she says as she waves her hand flippantly and I have to hold back from blurting out she was instructed to come after me with the promise of a payout.

"We'll just have to see how it plays out," I tell her as I go to open the door. "I have to get going now but we will definitely be meeting soon to talk about the case," I tell her as she walks past me. After today, we definitely need to be talking to forensics.

"Alright, before I forget, how's the girl and her mother doing," she questions as we walk to the front of the precinct.

"Both are doing good and Jade's mom's recovery is going well," I tell her as she smiles.

"Glad to hear that, I'll see you soon Natalia," she says as she walks back outside. I let out a sigh as I turn around and walk to my team's office. It's eight in the morning and I already feel so drained.

"You finished talking with Georgia?" Jason questions when he sees me walk into the room.

"I did, she believes that there had to be some misunderstanding that she would never do this but pulling a gun on another person, yeah, there's no misunderstanding there," I answer as I sit at my desk. "I didn't want to argue with her so I just kept my answers neutral for her."

"Good, we're having a meeting before we go, keep track of the timeline of events leading up to now. It's almost the end of the month and the drugs are still on the street plus Jax is joining the team so we can catch him up to speed with what's happening," he says and I get back up, slipping off my jacket as I tie my hair back.

"Alright, here's what we have so far," I say as I walk up to our whiteboard that's filled with pictures and notes from the last couple of weeks. "Going back to the first Friday of January, we were called in for a club fight, not surprising to hear things like that happened but instead we found a deceased person behind the club," I tell them, my finger pointing to the first picture of a smiling Derek Williams we pulled off of his phone.

"Derek Williams, age twenty-seven with friends at the night club was found overdosed on drugs, turns out that it was something new forensics has never seen before," I say looking at the men who have their undivided attention on me.

"We then decided to head to another exclusive nightclub under the assumption that you'd have to have money to get your hands on it, turns out our guess was right. That's where Leo Brady comes in, he was able to get the drugs on hand in the club which was later confiscated by Natalia," Nash says as he moves to the other side of the board.

"It wasn't easy but I got the job done. We went to go arrest him and his friend Ricardo who supplied Leo with the drugs but we found Ricardo dead in his home. No fingerprints were found, no shell casings from bullets so we're still at a dead end when it comes to who killed him," I tell them but Jason shakes his head at my words.

"Besides not answering anything else for the case, the only thing Aurora told me yesterday was claims that she's the one who did it but since it's her word against a case with no evidence, we can only keep her as a person of interest until we get more information," he tells me and I nod my head as I take a marker and put her name under Ricardo's photo with a question mark.

"We'll circle back to that when we have more information but let's continue. Leo agreed to cooperate with us and since he's someone well known, he found out my informant, Lucas Garcia was keeping inventory of the drugs," I say as I point at a photo of Lucas and then the picture of the warehouse.

"That's where you got shot right?"  Jax questions.

"I did but I shot him too and thankfully he wasn't killed," I answer as I shrug my shoulders. "The problem is that I also was shot but it wasn't from Lucas meaning someone else had to have been there. Although security cameras at the front of the warehouse were working, the ones in the back didn't so that is also an open case."

"Then you had the foresight to go back and check Lucas' bar where you found his computer, got a warrant to unlock it which later resulted in Aurora trying to take it from you. And now we're here with new information from Natalia," Jason concludes as the focus shifts back to me.

"Last night I finally got the last file unencrypted and it turns out the drugs were being made plus supplied by W & W Pharmaceuticals," I tell them.

"And what's going to happen now?" Felix questions without looking up, his eyes focused on the monitor in front of him.

"Now we're going to meet up with the crown attorney because one hundred percent the fucking lawyers for the company are going to argue about the warrant," Jason tells us. "We'll end up having to go to court to get it which will delay the investigation but we don't have any other choice."

"When are we supposed to be meeting her?" I ask him and he looks at his phone as he stands.

"In the next thirty minutes so we should be heading out now," he says as he looks at me and Nash.  Great, we also have to go along. Thankfully I put concealer under my eyes to hide the shadows I'm sporting, can't show up to a meeting looking exhausted; how unprofessional. I go back to my desk and grab my jacket while Nash holds my bag for me.

"I wonder if they'll now stop harassing you to hurry and bring more information," I comment to Jason as we walk outside the room to the front of the precinct.

"Wait, they're harassing you?" Nash asks from behind us.

"All the times I've had to work alongside them for the bigger cases, they'll never fucking understand that rushing to collect evidence will most likely bring a whole new set of problems," he says as we walk out the door to Nash's car. No reason to ride individually when we're all heading to the same place. "It's not the first time I've told them we can't rush things."

"Didn't that happen once when the old chief was here and someone didn't follow proper protocols? I think it was for an arson case right?" I ask as he nods his head.

"I wasn't working the case but I remember hearing from the team that was working it that they didn't get a warrant for a piece of evidence and that the case had to be thrown out plus the person had to be retried again without that evidence," he says and my eyes widen in surprise. "Apparently it was a big one."

"And they only did it wrong because the prosecution rushed them so they could quickly get the case to court and convict the person," I say as I roll my eyes. "Stupid suits," I mutter.

"And now they get pissed at me for not investigating faster. It's the last week of January and even though we've been working on this every day, it's like they expected us to have this all two days after what happened in the club, fucking ridiculous," he scoffs as I chuckle.

"Well unluckily for them, considering the one who's currently leading all this, they should understand that you don't take any bullshit," Nash remarks as he pulls out of the lot.

"Well, let's just hope things go smoothly this time," I say as I lean my head against the window while both men stay quiet but I know that we're are all in agreement.

"Chief Carter, it's nice to see you again," a woman says as we follow Jason into the attorney's office.

"It's nice to see you too Ms. Huxley," Jason says as he shakes the woman's hand. Crown attorney Phoebe Huxley, I haven't spoken to her before but in all the years I've seen her I've never once seen her smile, even when we do win a case. With her blonde hair tied back into a perfectly straight ponytail, dark-coloured power suits and cold gray eyes; she's just someone you don't want to mess with.

"And these are the detectives working the case?" she asks as she looks at Nash and me.

"Yes, this is Detective Sanchez and Detective Hendrix," he says introducing the two of us.

"It's nice to meet you," I tell her as I shake her hand, Nash following in the sentiments.

"You contacted me early this morning saying that getting the warrant this time round will take us to court," she says as we sit down in the chairs in front of her desk.

"Yes, because this time we're going for the head of this whole operation," I tell her as Nash hands me my bag and I pull out the laptop opening to the files for her to see. She takes it and she spends the next couple of minutes reading it before looking at me.

"This is real right?" she asks in shock.

"That was the last file I got opened and trust me I was just as surprised as you were," I tell her as she pushes the computer back.

"Alright, I'll start drafting up the warrant to present to the judge and then I'll let you guys know when we'll be meeting in court," she tells Jason. "Does you're team have anything else?"

"Nothing at the moment, considering this is brand new we can't rush in head first and destroy the whole case," Jason replies cooly and I refrain from rolling my eyes.

"I understand but you have to understand that others have already died from this, we need to get it off the street as soon as possible and whoever started this prosecuted," she says firmly and Nash leans forward in his chair and I know he's going to tell her off, well, politely tell her off.

"With all due respect, unless you want the judge to look at us like we're a laughing stock once this goes to trial because we fucked this up and everything gets thrown out, I can tell you that our team won't be working the case. At that point, a new team would have to be put together and I wish them luck in finding anything hugely substantial," he tells her and I keep my face blank as her face pinches.

"Since we have everything in order, here are the main points of information you'll need for the warrant. We'll be leaving now," Jason tells her as he drops a file in front of her and I take back the laptop.

"Have a nice day," I tell her with a fake sweet smile as I follow the men out. My hand goes onto Nash's arm as we walk out of the courthouse and he looks down at me.

"What is it?" he asks quietly.

"You're very sexy you know that," I say with a teasing smile as he smirks.

"Don't worry, I already knew that," he says as we walk out of the building.

"We're on the job you two, just cause I can't hear what you're saying doesn't mean I'm blind. At least do that when we're at the precinct since no one cares about the two of you," Jason scolds us, he has the face of a disappointed parent.

"Yes Chief," I chuckle as I keep a distance from Nash as we reach his car. "So now what do we do while we wait for the warrant? Are you going to question Aurora again?"

"I'm going to try though who knows if she even wants to talk," Jason replies with a shrug of the shoulders.

"Maybe I'll come watch," I tell him.

"Be my guest if you want to," he answers shrugging again. I look back at the courthouse and I'm not surprised with how things played out but I guess now Phoebe knows we mean business. It just sucks I couldn't laugh at her face when she looked like she had swallowed a lemon, oh well, maybe next time.

A/N Hello everyone!! It's been some time since I've last updated and before I continue, let me clear something up. The pharmaceutical company was added into chapter twelve, the idea came to me when I was writing this chapter so I had to do some editing. It's weird to think that the story is slowly (not rushed so don't worry) coming to an end, it makes me sad thinking about it.

But anyways, be sure to leave your thoughts of the chapter in the comments because I just love hearing what you all have to say!
