52. there's nothing left to save
The crashing sound followed by another shockwave of Magic throttled through the apartment. The early morning birds that chirped on the window sill, had not appeared that day. Some hovered out the window peering inside but flew away instantly.
Caroline noticed this oddness first, right before Kol. "Nature is a Serene witch's friend. Birds know that they can trust this particular human because nature conveys that message. But today they notice the darkness and so they won't come close." explained Kol.
"I wish there was something we could do. God! Something more than this stupid DVDs and music crap." she admonished turning away from the window.
"We are doing what we can, Caroline."
"Yeah, considering Elijah was supposed to do all of this in the first place." she denoted. "Where is he anyway?"
"I don't know. He never returned to the mansion and when we came in the morning no one was here."
Caroline furrowed her brows puzzled before it dawned on her, "that darkness must have manipulated him."
"What do you mean?" before Caroline could speak, Ezekiel and Maverick stormed into the apartment by throwing open the front door.
"Last night she said some nasty stuff to Klaus to get him to rile up and attack her."
"He attacked her?" reiterated Ezekiel ragingly.
"Is that all you gathered from that?" Klaus questioned walking into the living room area. "I am offended that you think I could attack Maeve with the intention of harming her."
"So you do agree that you attacked her."
"Seriously? Focus." Caroline snapped her fingers. "The dark side wants us out of Maeve's life so she will do everything to get us to leave. Klaus can you try Elijah? See what Maeve's dark side said and──" her words were sharply cut off when the room shook yet again and a shrill scream came from the bedroom.
"What's happening?"
"Maeve is doing everything she can to fight against the dark side and the dark side is attempting to take charge." said Maverick. "Now when two strong bulls clash heads, horns break."
"Is she going to..."
"Zee, she's going to die but she's just doing her best to stall it." said Maverick grimly, "I'm sorry."
Caroline pulled her phone and connected it to the speaker. The voice of Janet Jackson echoed through the apartment. "Maeve?" yelled Caroline. "Remember when we climbed on the roof of my house after stealing a bottle of wine from Mom's room? We were blasting out music and singing at the top of our voices in the night?"
The sound of scratching and fiddling lessened and stopped suddenly. Caroline placed a hand on the door and pressed her forehead on the door. "And remember how the neighbours called mom because we were being loud? Mom was so mad at us?"
"Yeah. She...um, she grounded both of us. I stayed in your guest bedroom for a whole week." Maeve's tired and fragile voice came through the door. Caroline gazed at the rest who stood in the room with a half hearted smile. It was a small win they had.
"Care...is my brother there?"
"I'm here Moony. I'm right here." said Ezekiel going forward and closer to the door. "I'm opening the door."
"NO!" she shouted abruptly. "I don't always have control over my body Zeke. I don't want to hurt you."
"You could never, Moony."
"But I did hurt Caroline and Nik and Elij...Elijah. I hurt him too. I can't do that to you. Listen...take care of the pack okay? Guess everyone will get their wish after all. A male Alpha."
"Don't you dare say something like that! We are going to fix this." Ezekiel turned to Kol, "what was that book Elijah was talking about? One with the prophecy description and what nots?"
"I think it's in my bag. I left it here." Kol gestured to the kitchen where a duffel bag was carelessly kept on the platform.
A moment of silence was a bliss compared to the screams and loud crashes that followed yet again, shattering the hearts of all three who stood outside of the bedroom.
Minutes turned to Hours and hours turned to days. Maeve kept herself caged inside her bedroom doing her best to stop her dark counterpart from coming out.
"You should have seen Nik's face then, he was so angry." said Kol. "I almost made a dagger for him but then he and his adopted son stopped me."
Maeve chuckled tiredly and rested her head on the door. "Adopted son? Nik adopted a boy?"
Kol brought his legs closer to him and placed his hands on his knees; so Rebekah could make way and settle on the floor next to him and closer to the bedroom door.
"Yes. Marcel. He was the illegitimate child. Nik saved him from his father who was treating him like a vermin."
"Oh look the psychotic hybrid has a heart. Did not see that one coming. Did you too? Nik, what about you?" berated Maeve with a cold undertone.
"Frankly, no. None of us saw that coming."
They sat in silence for a few more moments before Rebekah spoke up, "open the door, Maeve. You need to eat something."
"I'm not hungry." Maeve replied.
"Just a small crack so I can slip in the plate. That's it." Maeve did so and let Rebekah slide in the plate for her.
Rebekah and Kol moved away from the door and into the kitchen where Ezekiel and Maverick sat eating their lunch just in time as Klaus reentered the apartment.
The five of them had been taking turns to hold a conversation with Maeve or play her, her favourite movies or songs. Caroline would stop by every now and then but she had school to attend and look out for a humanity-less vampire named Elena Gilbert.
"Anything?" asked Rebekah looking slightly hopefully at Klaus.
"I tracked down this Glenn Baptista. Turns out she's a human who thought she was writing an encyclopaedia based on legends and myths. Nothing that can be stated factually."
"So the book that basically gave Elijah the idea that he might be responsible for Maeve is a hoax?" Kol asked with a roll of his eyes. "Excellent. Well call him then. Ask him to come back from whatever hole he's shoved himself in, and help us."
"I tried. He wouldn't budge." Klaus stated before falling silent.
"Why would he? He is the worst person to be around as are the rest of you." said Maeve announcing her presence in the room. Everyone's eyes fell on her, their mouth falling open almost in unison.
Maeve's eyes were bloodshot red from little to no sleep and dark bags under her eyes.
"You are responsible for all of this. Some more time and we'll end you." Rebekah declared aggressively.
Maeve let out a few hoots and feigned a scare, "I'm scared. What're you gonna do? Kill me? You could lose your precious Maeve. But you can't send me lose in the world either, what is it that I can't do? Nothing." she laughed mockingly, "what a dilemma you all are in."
"What did you mean when you said we are the worst people to be around?" asked Kol. Both of his siblings turned to him with raised brows but he continued to stare right at Maeve, ignoring them.
"Oh, so Elijah──when he first came here, your sweet innocent Maeve was a girl who was doing everything she could to hide her powers. Then he waltzed in and offered her help. Strike one! I had something to feed on. He laughed with her, joked with her, cared for her, and helped her. Maeve started to feel comfortable with her magic. I got more magic to feed on for myself. After that came you, Klaus Mikaelson. Did you know, she was batshit scared of you? Yeah like completely terrified of you. Then you helped her, treated her like a human──honestly didn't expect it, not gonna lie."
Maeve strolled casually over to the couch and sat comfortably on it, her legs sprawled up on the coffee table. "Turns you she gave a few extra damns about you guys because you are so special to her. Cared for her, saved her, made her laugh all kinds of mushy feely thingies." She placed the plate next to her and dusted off her hands and looked at the three closely, "there's more, I just don't know what. I can feel a strong bond but why it exists is a mystery."
"That strong bond is called being a family." Klaus declared.
"Oh really? We'll I don't like this family. The royal covens and Ezekiel are a different story."
"How generous of you." said Ezekiel sarcastically.
"Why wouldn't I be? You have been cleaning up my mess since before these Barbies and Ken dolls walked in here."
Ezekiel's jaw dropped open in shock. "You killed those witches?"
"Ding ding ding, we have a winner." she giggled menacingly, "every single time she had some extreme emotions, her magic would vibrate and I would slip through before she came through again."
"But the prophecy──"
"Rebekah...darkness is something you are born with. It always exists within you. Sometimes it is stronger than your good side and sometimes it's not. It differs for every person. I was always a part of her, she just started accepting it after you convinced her that it is okay to have darkness. I, thank you for that." she winked at everyone present in the room.
Maeve grunted in pain, clutching her head in her hands. "Stop doing that. You are hurting yourself!"
"Yes, you are. No──no I'm not. Stop it. Enough!" There was a tinnitus ringing that resonated like a force around the room. Maeve threw her head back with a jolt and jerked her body straight and upward. A sound gasp left her chapped lips and she breathed in and bent on the back.
"Maeve?" asked Ezekiel taking a step closer to her.
"Prongs! Hey..." She smiled tiredly. Ezekiel was quick on his feet, by his sister's side and hugged her.
"Shush...it's going to be okay. Don't worry."
"It's not." Maeve pulled away from him and shifted over to the other end of the couch. "You didn't hear her. She wants you to go away. She keeps whispering ways to kill every single one of you." Maeve let out a short scream from a sharp pain that coursed through her brain. "She kept painting a picture and I can't do it. I can't let her win. Not yet."
"Maeve the darkness has been a part of you. You can fight. She's not you, she's just a side of you." said Kol.
"She's becoming me, Kol. Soon she's going to make sure I am not in her way." Maeve launched herself off the bed and dashed into the destroyed bedroom again, slamming the door close behind her.
Maeve had to find a way to get rid of this counterpart of hers. But how? Then it struck her.
"You are the wrong energy. The energy with which I will take my last breath." She spoke out loud but her voice was only a whisper.
"My my. Someone is a big detective. Good you figured."
"That means I can kill you."
"Obviously not. You will kill yourself."
"I might or I might not. You may be a part of me but I know how to keep you out of my conscious thoughts ."
"But you──you will die too."
"I don't care if I die if it means, the people I care about so much don't die of your stupid conspiracies."
