4. Killer

Maeve smiled wide while answering the call with a cheerful tone, "This is a fine morning I'd say...being graced by the call of the blonde beauty herself."

"You are famous!" came Caroline's voice screaming over the speaker.

"I don't know about being famous but sure I have some fame to my name these days."

"There's a Lycan in my psych class and when I told him that I knew a Lycan and that was you, he all but stayed calm. He went into this hysterical state and is avoiding me ever since!" Caroline revealed to Maeve. Maeve chuckled inaudibly at the story.

"I am sorry Caroline that my quest to world domination has prevented you from making a new friend."

"Geez, you sound exactly like Klaus? Is everything okay?"

"I think I'm having imposter syndrome. Anyways...all's actually never been better. I'm about to, do something that has never been done before and I am showing the world who Maeve Kalon truly is."

"Tell me everything." over the hefty breakfast of Bacon sandwich and a cup of freshly brewed coffee, Maeve sat at her desk in the office telling Caroline all of her time over the summer, and until that very morning.

"Holy shit! That all happened? Holy shit. You are badass."

"Thank you. Now, how are you classess going? And the relationship with the petty incorrigible Tyler?"

"That's over, Maeve. We broke up. Officially." Caroline informed her with a deep sigh. Maeve sat up in her chair, surprised to hear her.

"Ar...are you serious? Ho..wh...when did you do it?"

"He said that the only thing left in his life is revenge against Klaus."

Maeve's facial expression turned deadly blank, enough to make anyone immediately run for the hills. "He said what?"

"Maeve, don't. Okay? He's not worth it."

"I know he's worth nothing but please..." she bit her tongue, "Care... I'm so sorry. Its not right."

"Well it's over now. My classes are going great by the way." Caroline began to tell in detail about the classess she was taking at the Whitmore college. Maeve let her talk, distract herself from the clear heartbreak she felt due to Tyler.

"God! You make me miss college." Maeve said. A knock at the door broke her small laughs, "just a minute Caroline....yes?"

The door opened to reveal Maverick. He held up a piece of parchment, showing it to Maeve. "Hey, I've got the list." he revealed.

"Listen Care, we'll talk later, okay? I need to be somewhere." with final goodbyes, she ended the call.

"Get in and close the door." she instructed the man. "Are you sure this will work?"

Maverick closed the door and approached the desk. "Take me for a fool, do you?" he handed Maeve the list letting her run her eyes over it herself.

Several questions clouded his mind ever since she first reached out to him a few days ago about the unlinking spell and mentioned the name 'Mikaelson'. He couldn't help but wonder why she was so quick to help the family...especially after what he had heard.

"Nik and Rebekah and Kol, all three of them acted against their usual expected behavior. Always. They showed up, Maverick. When they didn't have to."

"Did something happen? I mean...other than the prophecy?"

Maeve sighed before she began, "The Mystic falls gang...when they found out who I actually am, started to treat me differently. Nik was the first one to notice how I was being manipulated into doing their work. He treated me better than anyone. Same goes for Beks and Kolbear."

"I get it...friends turned pack." both smiled at one another, recognising the feeling for themselves.

"Also because Klaus has been giving me lessons and tricks on handling the you-know-whos." Maeve added making Maverick smile diligently.

"That phone call you talked about?"

"I am spreading a rumor around the Lycan world that the heirs to the throne are in a feud. It is destroying the pack from within. Dividing the pack in two teams---stuff like that. It caught fire, they have shook hands with Zeke to overthrow me... we have an insider in the name of Ezekiel who is befriending someone on the team who is always berated and some other stuff which will all get that Alpha to..." She paused for dramatic effect,

"Submit to me." her eyes sparkled deviously.

"You're vindictive." Maverick laughed.

"That's the only way a woman can survive a man's world."

"Oh honey..." Maverick leaned forward on the table, joined his hands and gave a glazed look to Maeve, "it is always a woman's world. You just need to start showing ownership, that's all."

"That is exactly why I am waiting for a call from Orvieto, Italy." she smiled. Right on time the phone rang. Maeve looked at Maverick with a giggle resounding.

"Hello." Maeve answered the call in a sultry tone.

"Maeve?"

She sat up in her chair confused because of the caller. "Rebekah? What's up?"

"It's Hayley. Somethings wrong. Like witchcraft wrong."

"Rebekah!" Maeve yelled out the original's name. She didn't bother knocking and instead just burst in through the main door.

"Up here!" she heard Rebekah. Both ran after the sound that led them to a bedroom just a floor above. Hayley laid on the bed perspiring and covered in a thick blanket.

Maverick with a quick stride walked ahead of Maeve to check on Hayley.

"Fever, raised pulse rate." Maverick listed out loud. He pressed two fingers to the base of her neck and closed his eyes.

"Magic." he frantically declared. He turned his head around glancing at Maeve. Before she could get a word out, two figures stepped into the room. Elijah and Sophie stepped in, the latter clearly distressed.

"She is here to help." Maeve's expression changed quickly hearing Elijah. She took two quick steps and approached Sophie.

"Oh really. The French quarter coven is being helpful?"

Sophie gulped nervously due to the intimidating presence of Maeve, "I want to help. I lose my leverage if I don't." she revealed in fear.

Maeve laughed at that——almost sinisterly. "Why would you give a crap about anyone unless there was something in it for you." Sophie stared at Maeve for a few more seconds before she turned to Rebekah.

"I can help. I'll text you a list." Sophie said.

Maverick stood up, visibly showing the offence he felt. "How about..." began Maeve gesturing at Maverick with two fingers, to calm down. "You go play fetch and I think Rebekah is quite capable of helping me set up the spell, Maverick is going to perform."

Sophie turned to her to argue more but bit her tongue. "You listen to me, Sophie. You are the reason all of this is happening because you think you own this world. News flash, you don't. So why don't you be kind to yourself and us and tell us clearly who did it and how was it done."

Sophie was cornered. Maverick was towering behind her, and Maeve in front of her. Both were formidable but she decided she knew better. "There's a prophecy. That child will bring doom to all witches. So Agnes decided to end her life."

"Miscarriage." denoted Maeve, glancing up at Maverick. "Here's the list. Get this before evening sets and I might feel motivated to not end your life." Maeve threatened Sophie before she stepped aside to give the young witch space to leave.

Sophie kept staring at Maeve before he quickly threw a look at Elijah. If only he were her help. The last thing Elijah had in mind was to go against anything Maeve had said...or rather decreed. Maeve, having noticed the silent plea of help, once again made a quick note to Sophie,

"One last time, Sophie..." she began with a mockery tone. "This family is my pack. Hayley and the unborn child by extension...obviously. You do not want to test the limits of an Alpha because you are deciding at your own accord to second guess and waste valuable time in helping her pack. I learnt my very best moves from a very feared man whose child's life you have just threatened and used against him. Darling you have no fucking clue of just how better I am than him."

That did the trick in making Sophie quickly make herself scarce with the list.

"Thank you for helping Hayley." said Elijah. "Both of you."

"You need not thank Elijah. I'm doing this for my best friend. You had no weigh in my decision. Then again, you never really did weigh in."

Maverick turned to Rebekah taking the moment of silence as his cue, "I'm gonna need some stuff."

"What do you need?" asked Rebekah.

"Kitchen?"

"Yes please." said Rebekah and both rushed out immediately leaving Elijah and Maeve in a tense silence and Hayley still on the bed laying in pain.

"Excuse me, while I make a call." she exited the room, not without shoving her shoulder against Elijah's.

Maeve walked into the backyard of the house and dialled Penelope. "Contact Nik." she said as soon as she heard the click of the call being received. "Help him get Agnes and her little band of extremists. They need to be dealt with."

She ended the call and dropped her arms on the sides of her body. Maeve rolled her eyes and turned around with an irritated look. "What do you want now?"

"Maeve...what happened?" asked Elijah as he stepped out onto the back porch. His eyes were set on her trying to see past the cold look Maeve held.

"What do you mean?"

"In these past months. What happened?"

"Why do you care?"

Elijah licked his bottom lip before he answered her truthfully, "because this isn't you. This...Maeve is not you. The anger, the leaning toward violence is not you. I want to know what happened."

"So now you care?" Maeve scoffed, "why now? Hmm. What will you do if you knew?"

"I am sorry for what I did Maeve...but please, this is not you."

"Do you know who the French quarter coven is? What they do? What they mean to me?" asked Maeve angrily glaring at Elijah. "Here's the truth. That coven stands as the constant reminder that those two incredible human beings who chose to raise me, don't even know me anymore. They stand as a reminder that I can kill. Can do it with just a simple wave of my hands. So tell me, Elijah Mikaelson, what do you want me to do? Leave them be? Let them live for causing me such misery?"

Elijah stayed silent. He didn't have anything to say to her that would be like offering a consolation.

Amidst a moonless night, the sky was a quilt of impenetrable darkness. Hayley sat near the edge of the pool, her petite form trembling and ensconced within the embrace of a tattered blanket. The haunting shadows cast by the dying embers of a nearby fire pit only accentuated her fragile vulnerability.

"Get her in the pool," Maverick instructed, his otherwise gentle features hardening with determination. He continued to mix the herbs in a granite bowl before he scooped some in a spoon and held it up to Hayley's mouth.

"It's pathetic taste but swallow it down." Hayley swallowed it before she fell into a coughing fit clearly the harsh taste didn't sit well with her.

"I don't understand how a midnight swim could possibly be the solution," Rebekah objected, distrust lining her voice. The wisps of her blonde hair refused to yield to the disdain that furrowed her brow.

"Maverick will break the link. We just need some time," Elijah assured calmly. He removed his tailored jacket, revealing his tall and broad-shouldered figure adorned in fine clothing. He entered the pool and with great care and tenderness, lifted Hayley in his arms.

"It's the human touch," Maeve offered while observing from a distance. "It's comforting."

Underneath the pitch-black sky, Hayley felt herself relax slightly in Elijah's warm embrace as Maverick's spell began to take effect. They were caught unaware when Hayley suddenly crouched in agony. "I can't breathe!" She screamed in pain, eyes wide with fear.

"Focus on my voice, Hayley. Breathe with me," Elijah soothingly coached, worry etching itself onto his ordinarily stoic features.Watching this intimate interaction between Elijah and Hayley stirred up bitter emotions within Maeve — jealousy mixed with longing for that same gentle connection she once had with him.

"I felt it lift!" Sophie announced triumphantly after several agonizing minutes. To prove it, she took out her earring and pierced it through her palm. Elijah gently opened Hayley's hand, revealing that the wound mirrored on Sophie's palm had disappeared.

As the tension dissipated, Hayley and Elijah locked their gaze, sharing a moment of unspoken adoration and gratitude.

"You know he loves you, right?" Rebekah whispered to Maeve, sensing the uncertainty and nervousness beneath the redhead's mysterious demeanor.

Maeve offered a sad chuckle in response. "The darkness in me...is too loud and void. No one could find that beautiful or fall in love with it. That one there ── she's too pure and bright. Wouldn't blame him."

"You can't say it like that," Rebekah gently rebuked.

Maeve continued, "Earlier, he asked me this isn't me. Whoever is here in me is not Maeve. Clearly, he would prefer a woman who's not dark or constantly seeking violence."

Rebekah looked at Maeve with sympathy, unable to find the words to comfort her."Anyways, I'll see you later beautiful." and so Maeve walked away without taking notice of Elijah who's eyes searched for her the second, he got Hayley out of the pool.

Klaus stood at the head of the benches inside the St Anne's Church right next to Father Kieran. His eyes roved from one person to another, all who were forced as hostage.

Maeve stomped into the room, her hands wound behind her back. "Hello hostages! I hope Nik was a good host."

"You and your puns are insulting at best."

"I think I hit the bar." she threw a wink at Klaus and continued to walk further, her eyes exclusively set on Agnes.

"You." she said with an angered tone. "I should have guessed you would be behind it?"

"Of course you should have."

"I shouldn't have expected you to be any better. Siding with these atrocious beasts. As sorry as I felt, I do not anymore. You deserve to die — just like your parents and Uncle."

Maeve's eyes turned red and claws elongated hearing Agnes. "Would you like to elaborate on that?" she inquired.

"I was the one who killed the last Serene witch. Or so I thought. You are nothing but evil. So will be his child." Klaus sped and immediately held Agnes in a deadly grip, his hands wound around her neck.

"You clearly should have taken some course on the art of silence. You could have survived tonight quite peacefully." said Maeve slowly stepping closer to Agnes.

"You killed them? Are you proud of it?"

Klaus tightened his hold when Agnes refused to answer immediately. "Yes." dhe muttered.

"Leave her." Elijah interrupted them suddenly. Maeve turned on the ball of her foot and faced him, her eyes still as red as ever.

"He should do what?" asked Maeve.

"Niklaus I gave my word that you will not kill Agnes." said Elijah ignoring Maeve. His eyes were sternly set upon his brother.

"You tend to give your words at the most inopportune times, brother. Come on, it will only take a simple turn of the neck." Maeve quickly sent a message through the phone as the brothers conversed between themselves.

Before long the place was stormed by at least a dozen Lycans. "You know what truly is your problem, Elijah?" Maeve began, "you think you are better than the rest of us. You show mercy, you strike deals, you are the Democrat, the Diplomat. Somehow this time it works in mine and Nik's favour."

She casually walked over to Agnes. Klaus stepped away immediately leaving space for Maeve to become the executioner. "Thank you Elijah for leaving me out of your deal. I'll handle her from here on."

"Maeve listen..." but she ignored Elijah. She focused entirely on Agnes who trembled so lightly, it was almost unnoticeable.

"Tsk tsk tsk," tutted Maeve mockingly. "Are you afraid of what I will do?" Agnes nodded her head.

Maeve raised her voice to ask. "Hey, Ben! Do you want to tell Agnes who you are?"

"My father was Alpha Jared's Beta. He lost his life protecting his Alpha from you."

"My sister was one of the warriors you killed mercilessly."

"Don't you see?" one of the extremists decided to speak up. "All of it could have been prevented if your Alpha would have just let us get through to the Serene witch and this abomination. That's all." Every Lycan let out a throaty dangerous growl.

"No, she's right. It's her." someone else joined in. "Her kind brings nothing but death. Your pack would not have suffered the loss had that Abomination not been born. It was our duty as guardians of nature to keep it balanced. She is far too strong and far too dangerous to be kept alive. She is using you all, the Pack's resources for her own selfish benefits. Don't you think we don't see the news or have ears? She doesn't care about this pack. She only cares about the original family and her sel---"

His words drowned in her own blood that spilled out of her mouth. It was Penelope who jammed her hand through the man's chest and ripped his heart out.

Maeve stood stunned in place, her face had turned pale. It was as if the last few months flashed before her eyes in a matter of seconds. Perhaps the witch was right. She did go to the extremes so many times that perhaps she had her own selfish gains subconsciously lined up to be fulfilled.

"She agrees." said Agnes. Maeve looked at her threateningly. Perhaps one last act of violence wouldn't do much worse than it already was. Maeve's fangs elongated in a second before she bit into Agnes's neck. Maeve tasted the copper taste of her blood for a few seconds liking the way it lingered on her tongue before she pulled away.

Agnes dropped to her knees in agony feeling a burning sensation run through her veins, taking away control over her own body.

"Lycan venom is dangerous for any Supernatural." she turned to Klaus and Elijah who had been watching the scene unfold from aside.

"Would either of you like a go? Or would it be alright if I take the matter in my hands"

"As long as she dies...do whatever you want. They are all yours." said Klaus making Maeve grin deviantly.

"Listen up clearly. Nobody comes after my pack and gets to live." in a swift motion, Maeve ripped out Agnes's heart. All seven of her followers lost their hearts in the next seven seconds.

Maeve was a sight to be seen. Eyes a blood red glowing under the dim light of the church. Blood coating her lips and dripping down her chin along the corners of them. The ripped out heart in her bloodied left hand. She looked like a true vengeful queen from a fantasy novel.

"Take their bodies to the dungeon. I think there are many in Georgia who would like to weigh in on the decision of how to dispose off, these particular bodies." declared Maeve. She dropped the heart next to Agnes's body and stepped over it.

She turned to the brothers to bid goodbye for the night. She decided to say it to Elijah first, I know you think you are better than both, me and Nik. You think that, because you think that your diplomacy and deals show mercy, makes you noble. You are wrong. I don't know what you know and you don't know but I know you enough to know that you caught on really early that the coven wants something more than just to see Marcel gone. Yet after knowing that you were manipulated, you still undoubtedly gave your fucking word to Sophie that Nik will not kill Agnes."

"I was going to kill her instead."

"I know that. The devil is always in the details with you but it is quite merciless on your part to not let the man whose child's life was threatened, kill the woman responsible. Ever think about that? You didn't. Because God forbid if Elijah Mikaelson ever thinks about emotions that emerge from Revenge."

Maeve turned to Klaus next. "She'll get the end she deserves for what she tried to do. See if Hayley is okay, I'll see you two tomorrow." she left.

Klaus turned to Elijah immediately as Maeve had left out of the church. "I don't know what you did but good luck brother. She is not going to give you any mercy, that's for sure."

Elijah didn't respond to his brother and instead sped out of the room to chase after Maeve. Luckily for him, he caught up with her just a block away.

"Seline! Leave me alone Elijah." Maeve yelled.

"Not until we talk."

"What do you want to talk about?" She asked.

"I'm sorry for how I acted, Maeve..."

"You trusted a human who thought she was writing fiction over your own gut." she said. "Fine you want to talk? Let's talk. You left."

"Maeve I---"

"No. Let me talk this time." Maeve gave him a straight look. Her eyes brimmed with unshed tears. "You left when I needed you. Not wanted you, needed you. I was there through everything. Evil mother, I helped. White oak stake, I helped. Dead brother, I was there. The one time I needed you. I needed you to stay, not wanted you---needed you to stay, you left. If that was not all, like it should have been, you were with Katherine."

"It wasn't like that if you could just let me..."

"No. You had time. I had to learn from an emotionless Elena that you were with Katherine of all people. While I begged silently for you to come back, you were helping out an old flame. How do you think that made me feel?"

It was nearing midnight and thankfully for both of them the streets were quite empty. "Maeve I was no help to you, so I figured I'd take the cure at least so it doesn't fall in the hands of the Salvatore's who would give it to Elena."

Maeve scoffed and let out a dark laugh, "oh my god, you are actually defending yourself. This is hilarious."

"Maeve I'm sorry."

"I'm sorry too. Go to hell Elijah." she turned to storm away but stopped after just a few steps and turned around. "To answer your questions from today, this is me. That darkness may have left but it also made me realise that I have always been the dark one, just with some bit of care, empathy, sympathy and love to make me more human than a predator."

************************************
Wow, that sucked.

I know what you're thinking, is she going to constantly hate on Elijah? Berate him? Insult him? Be sarcastic? "Obviously." (she said in Snape's voice)

Anywho...hope you liked the chapter even though it might have sucked. Let me know what you think.

Take care everyone!

Raven :)
