3. Richmond

Maeve sauntered inside the boarding house humming to Dean Martin. Her eyes roved around the empty space searching for either of the Salvatore's. "Yoo-hu! Anybody home?"

"It's not nice to leave a naked woman so early in the morning." Maeve whipped her head around to see Rose standing in the hallway covered in only a towel. Maeve looked away immediately with a wide open mouth. "I knew it was dangerous to come early morning." grimaced Maeve.

"Sorry." Rose apologised tightening the towel around her.

"No. I am. I should've known better." Maeve turned to look at Rose again. Before she could speak more, Elena walked into the room. "Elena."

"Hey Maeve."

"I'll change and come quickly." rose told him and quickly exited. Maeve crossed her arms and turned to Elena who remained indifferent standing beside her.

"What are you doing here?" Maeve asked Elena who rolled her eyes in response, "I could ask you the same thing." shot back Elena.

"Sweetheart, you have a history of doing stupid things. What do you plan on doing today?"

Elena sighed pointing to the couch in the room. Both of them settled on the couch facing each other. "I need to find more about Klaus. Rose's friend Slater can help me."

"So you want to reach out to him?" Maeve noticed Elena hesitate in responding confirming her suspicion that Elena was indeed hiding something.

"I just want to find out more about the man, Maeve. It's not wrong."

"When did I say it was?" Maeve asked incredulously earning a scowling look from Elena.

"You scowl a lot. You might freeze your face to it." Maeve joked before clearing her throat.

Maeve watched Elena carefully with a blank stare as she relayed her idea of going to Richmond to find out more about Klaus.

"It's a bad idea." Rose commented as soon as Elena finished her bit.

"I agree. You are absolutely off track with this idea." Maeve firmly stated sitting up straight.

"No one asked you!" exclaimed Elena rudely dismissing Maeve. Elena glanced back at Rose, "What if I told you I could get you a daylight ring?" she asked hoping the bribe would do the work of convincing Rose.

"I've been a slave to the shadows for five hundred years, what do you think?" Rose replied.

"Take us to Richmond and I can get you a daylight ring." Maeve stared in disbelief at Elena before she scoffed angrily, "when did I become a part of this plan?"

"Maeve, don't you want to know more about Klaus? He will come after all of us." Elena tried reasoning with her. "Either come with me or stay here."

"And what? You know I'll tell the Salvatore about this." Elena shook her head frantically, "please Maeve. You can't do it."

Maeve thought for a minute before she let out a defeated breath, "I'll come. Somebody needs to be the dragon for the princess." Maeve grumbled with a pout of her lower lip. She glanced at Rose who rolled her lips into a thin line hiding a smirk.

Maeve parked her car on the footpath in front of the tall apartment building. She got out of the drivers seat looking up at the tall building. "He lives here?" asked Maeve. Rose dashed inside the building before turning to her again.

"Come on." she said waving at the two to follow her. The trio walked up the stairs to his apartment.

Rose knocked on the door, "Slater, it's Rose, open up!" she shouted out to him. The three stood outside, in the hallway waiting for the large white door to open.

After a few minutes of silence, Rose turned to Elena, "I don't think he's home. We should go."

Elena shook her head, "I am not leaving without answers. We didn't come all this way for nothing." Maeve rolled her eyes, "she'll just keep whining." Maeve commented snarkily. She stepped ahead of the two and threw open the door with a single kick

Rose's jaw fell open at the thud sound of the door opening. "Ho──how did you do that?"

"Practice." lied Maeve walking inside the house to avoid more questions.

"But that was..." Maeve gave a side glare to Rose who silenced herself. The three walked around the house searching for the guy named Slater.

"I don't think he's going to be of much help." Rose suddenly let out. Elena and Maeve made their way to where she stood. Both gasped in shock seeing the dead body of a man lying there with a stake driven through his heart.

"That's brutal." Maeve grimaced turning away. Elijah works fast! she thought to herself.

"So..." Maeve clapped her hands turning to the two, "home?"

Rose turned away to the window. She pulled the blinds up letting sunlight enter inside. "Wait, Rose!" yelled Maeve seeing the sunlight filter in.

"Special glass. UV rays can't penetrate. I used to come here just to watch the day." Rose said putting her head on the window. She stayed there for a few minutes soaking in the sun a little more.

"This is pointless. Let's just go." Rose aggravated. She walked to the front door when a soft voice made her stop mid-step. She gestured to Maeve and Elena to stay where they are. She pointed further into the house. "Alice?" She beckoned.

"Rose?" A girl with a tear-stained face walked out and immediately pulled her in a hug. Elena pushed Maeve ahead of her into the kitchen giving them some privacy.

"Was finding more information about Klaus your only agenda to come here?" Maeve asked looking at Elena who looked disappointed.

"Yes, Maeve. You don't have to understand." Elena huffed placing her hand flat on the kitchen table.

"Clearly. I didn't even have to come here. I have way better things to do then babysit you." Maeve argued pointing at Elena.

"Then why did you come? You could have stayed back and waited for Damon and talked like you always do!" Elena exclaimed with a sharp intake of breath.

"Is it because you don't like me that you're getting angry or is it because I spend time with Damon outside of the 'save Elena' meetings?" Maeve asked. Elena looked shocked. Maeve knew there was a lot of unresolved issues between the three but she knew better than to mention it. That very moment it just slipped out in a fit of anger.

To save them from any further argument, Rose strided in to the room. She opened the cabinets to get the ingredients to make tea for herself.

"How is she?" Elena asked turning her back to Maeve, who simply rolled her eyes.

"Overreacting big time."

"We're familiar with that." Maeve mumbled looking at Elena. Elena pursued her lips with a seething look.

Elena ignored Maeve and focused on Rose instead, "She just lost her boyfriend. She's allowed to grief." Elena defended Alice, knowing what loss meant.

"Please. Alice was only with Slater to see if he'd turn her." Rose explained. Elena looked a little thoughtful. She grabbed the tea cup and walked to Alice. The three walked back into the living room.

Alice studied Elena's face while she took the cup of tea from Rose. "You look familiar. Did you know Slater?"

"Not personally. No. I know he keeps detailed records about Vampires and contact. I was wondering if he had anything about Klaus." Elena asked. Maeve grumbled in annoyance finally understanding what were the girl's actual intentions with the impromptu trip.

"Klaus doesn't like being pointed at." Alice cautioned Elena.

"Do you know Slater's computer password?" Elena decided on asking instead.

"Are you serious, Elena? For god's sake shut up for once!" Maeve snapped pulling her a little back by her arm. Elena pulled her hand from Maeve's grip and shot her an annoyed look.

"If you don't want to help, at least don't get in the way." Elena threatened

"You're asking me this? I just saw my boyfriend die with a stake through his heart." Alice wailed looking at Elena.

"I understand. Do you have the password?" asked Elena.

Maeve grabbed Elena's elbow pulling her close to whisper in her ear, "for someone who claims to know grief and being compassionate you are not doing a good job right now." Elena snatched her arm out of Maeve's hold and returned her attention to Alice.

"Who do you think you are?" Alice shrieked in disbelief.

"What if I convince Rose to turn you? Will you then tell me the password?" After a second of thinking, Alice quickly made her way to the computer and punched in alphabets on the keyboard.

Rose pulled Elena on the side checking once again if Alice was watching. "You do realise she's getting nowhere near my blood, right?"

"I know but she doesn't" Elena told in a cold voice.

Alic continued to type in the keyboard searching through Skater's computer. "His computer is wiped out. Whoever killed him must have cleaned out the hard drive. Lucky, Slater was paranoid and made a backup of everything."

"Kristen stewart. God, he was so obvious." Alice jested with her mouth wide open.

Elena pointed at the screen, "There. He exchanged dozens of emails with Cody Webnar about Elijah. Maybe he knows something about Klaus."

"I could call him for you." Alice offered. Elena's eyes sparked a little at the offer. She looks over at Maeve knowing it would not be much appreciated what she's about to do. "Call him. Tell him to send a message to Klaus that the doppelganger is alive and ready to surrender." Elena instructed Alice. Maeve fisted her hands on either side of her body.

"Oh my gosh, I knew I recognised you!" Alice exclaimed with a bright smile.

"What the hell are you doing? Are you insane?" Maeve shrieked looking fixedly at the doppelganger. She fumed in rage breathing sharply through her mouth.

Elena gulped slightly restless with Maeve's burning eyes. "Look, it's either me or my family. I can't do this to them."

"That's suicide. If Klaus finds out that you're alive he'll come after you and kill you. But, that's what you wanted all along." Rose realised. Maeve twisted around on her heel and stepped closer to the window in the room.

"Just send the message." She heard Elena tell Alice. Maeve weighed in her next moves. "What are you thinking about?" asked Rose placing a hand on her shoulder.

"About how much I regret ever agreeing to babysit that martyr inside." Maeve bitterly stated. She rested her head on the window watching the world move on. She straightened her back, "I'm calling Damon. Because if I try arguing I'll kill her." Maeve quickly informed Rose and walked out of the apartment.

Damon picked up the call on the third ring, "Not a good time, Mae. I'm in middle of something very complicated."

Maeve pinched the bridge of her nose. "Yeah, well this is a bit more important. Currently I am in Richmond with the little doe"

She heard the line go silent for a few seconds before a rough voice of Damon came, "Tell me everything." he commanded.

"Basically, we're in Richmond where martyr Elena is on a suicide mission and has already sent out an email to get the attention of Klaus. Get here because I really don't want to argue with her. I'll text the address." Maeve abruptly ended the call and pulled out the text box to send him her address.

Maeve re-entered the house. She glanced at Rose and Alice settled on the sofa before her eyes went to Elena who now remained by the window. Suddenly she gasped loudly jumping back startled.

"What is it?" Maeve asked quickly approaching her.

"Nothing." Elena responded.

"You sure?" Elena nodded. Maeve walked around to the other side of the window staring outside the window ignoring Elena's eyes, she felt settle on her.

Maeve finally met Elena's eyes, "Elena, look here's the thing. It's not news that I hate you. All I'm saying is to think this through. There are a lot of people who care about you, who will be hurt by this martyr act."

"Why are you convincing me then? You hate me, right? So, I'll be out of your hair soon enough." Maeve raised her hands in surrender. Every few minutes that passed she kept looking at her wrist watch and then at the door.

Not long after, Damon came barging in through the door immediately in front of Elena who jumped back in surprise. "What are you doing here? You called him?" Elena raved on looking from Damon to Rose.

"Actually, it was me." Maeve pointed out raising her hand in the air.

"Thanks for that." said Damon glaring at Elena. Maeve nodded her head walking around the two and closer to the door.

"I knew you'd never understand." Elena bellowed at Maeve who ignored her rudely. "I should have never let you come with me."

Maeve glared at Elena snapping her neck around, "you shouldn't have? I came here for the very reason that you are a stupid little girl with hardly any understanding of the world, thinking that she is being a martyr but all she is doing is causing more pain to those she intends on saving." Maeve gritted her teeth.

The tension that grew thicker between them was suddenly abrupted by Alice entering the room. "Damon Salvatore...oh my god." she grinned foolishly.

Maeve couldn't help but smile at her reaction, "look at that, D. You've got yourself a fan. Aren't you going to give her your autograph? Maybe a kiss to remember you by?" teased Maeve. Damon gave her a side glare before he looked at Rose. "Get rid of her." he told Rose. Rose grabbed Alice by her arms and dragged her into the adjoined room.

"Come on, we're going." Damon turned after telling Elena. Elena shook her head stepping away from him, dismissing him, "No Damon. I'm not going with you"

"You don't get to make decisions anymore." Damon condemned turning to her again.

"When have I ever made a decision. You and Stefen make them for me. This is my decision." denounced Elena glaring at him.

"Who is going to save you if you're out there making decisions?" Damon scolded her.

"You're not listening Damon. I don't want to be saved. Not if it means Klaus will kill every single person that I love." Elena spoke determinedly.

"And what about when he gets to you and we are left to answer Jeremy and Jenna and every single friend of yours? Do you think we can answer them by saying 'oh actually we tried but she wanted to save you all, so we let her be.' You think that is an answer? Acceptable one at that?"

"Get out the door now before I make you." Damon gave an ultimatum.

"No." Elena threw a punch at Damon who gripped her fist without any efforts His eyes flashed a feeling of hurt that he washed away in a matter of seconds.

"Don't ever do that again." Damon spoke slowly in anger trying to scare Elena. He went into the room where Rose took Alice, leaving Elena and Maeve alone. Both the girls were ignoring the other for different reasons. Maeve didn't want to look at her face because she knew what it feels like to lose your loved ones and family of all. While, Elena wanted to ignore Maeve for the hatred she thought Maeve harboured for her and because it was she who ratted her out.

"Alice is now sound asleep and will not remember this horribly stupid day, at all." Damon informed walking over to Elena, still with an scowling look.

The front door bursted open and appeared two men wearing black clothes, "we are here for the doppelganger." one of them announced.

Thank you for coming" Elena tried walking past Damon but he held her back. Damon tilted his head closer to Elena, "I will break your arm." He threatened Elena before seeing straight ahead at the men. "There's nothing here for you."

Maeve stepped away from the door, her heart thumping loudly in her chest. Her eyes stayed wide open and unblinking on the two burly men and one comparatively lean on by the door. Maeve let out a shocked gasp when the man at the door suddenly fell limp on the floor with a loud thud. Her eyes went wider and jaw went slack in sudden fear at the sight of Elijah. She gaped at his appearance, a button up shirt with rolled up sleeve. He gripped the heart of the man in his right hand. He speeded inside the house right next to the two men in suit.

Damon stared trying his best to keep a neutral face at Elijah, "I killed you. You were dead" noted Damon eyeing Elijah.

"For centuries now." was Elijah's condescending response. Elijah turned his attention to the two men. "Who are you?"

"Who are you?" One of the men asked daringly.

"I'm Elijah." he responded calmly.

"We were bringing her to you. She's the doppelganger. How don't know how she exists but she does. Klaus will want to see her." One of the two men stuttered replying.

"Does anyone else knows that you are here?"

"No"

"Than you've been extremely helpful" saying so Elijah plunged his hand in their chest ripping their hearts out. Rose already vamp-speed out of the place seeing him, leaving Elena, Damon and Maeve alone in the apartment.

Elijah turned his gaze to the girl standing on his side. He recollected the letter she wrote addressed to him. What surprised him was why would Damon show surprise if she knew who Elijah was.
The confidence that radiated in her aura somehow peeked Elijah's curiosity to know her but he chose on not acting on it. He stared at Maeve picking up on her racing heart yet again. He stared into her eyes watching them set on him. He noticed her fear and decided against any further words. He left the apartment without another word.
