the streets were blazing with merciless sun rays, almost melting the ashpalt roads. his foot crunched against the concrete sidewalk, shadows of the towering trees acting as a shield for him. honking cars passed by in flashes, reliving the busy neighborhood.
the other day, hueningkai got an amazing news.
"bro, have you heard?" yeonjun asked, laying lazily on the couch. the group decided to hang in kai's house on the last day of school.
"heard what?" he asked, curiosity overwhelming him.
yeonjun ignorantly played on his phone, "a new ice cream shop is opening in the area." he shrugged, beomgyu and taehyun still peacefully sleeping on his lap.
"oh, it's the one that used to pass by our houses, right? the one with that signature horn..." soobin jumped in, sitting next to him on the floor.
"wait, that one?" he yelped, shaking soobin's shoulders in joy.
"yeah, what's it called again? uhm..." yeonjun's voice trailed off in uncertainty. kai gasped in realization.
"POP POP'S ICE!" he screeched, clapping my hands as excitement filled my body.
"SHH!" soobin whacked his head, the sound almost audible.
"OUCH!" he complained, rubbing his neck.
"see, you just woke them up!" yeonjun glared at kai, as if telling him 'what's wrong with you?'
"ugh, what's with that dolphin scream?" taehyun said with his croaky voice, scratching his head.
"you better have a good excuse, kai." beomgyu boomed, pointing his finger at kai. kai simply smiled.

"WHAT?!" y/n screamed in both joy and shock.
"calm down, y/n." her dad reasoned.
"POP POP'S ICE IS HAVING ITS OWN SHOP??" she screamed, again.
"YES DON'T YOU DARE YELL AGAIN." her dad finally snapped, causing her to flinch. she did what he said.
they were home, having small talks when her dad suddenly brought up pop pop's ice, the ice cream cart that used to go around the neighborhood. they were in the dining room, enjoying late night snacks.
the night was usually almost pitch-black in her neighborhood, the moon's light struggling as it tried to crawl into every corner. however, that night, her house was a beacon of light to the others. the lights shone brightly upon the evening, providing a little bit of a lively atmosphere in midst of the sleeping neighborhood.
"when is it gonna open?" she finally cracked the brief silence, leaning onto the table.
"2 days from now." her father casually replied, scribbling something on his cellphone.
"why didn't you tell me earlier?" she asked in disbelief, slightly hurt of the fact.
"because we don't want to burden you, y/n." he finally put down his cell, focusing on his one and only daughter.
he knew that she really loves cooking and baking, especially desserts. but considering all the odds, he wanted to provide her with proper education before diving into her passion so that she would have a better future.
"best leave it for us to handle, honey." he caressed her cheek before standing up.
"goodnight. sleep well." he approached her and gave a quick peck on the forehead as parting, heading for the bedroom afterwards. y/n, who couldn't let a single word out, just stared into the space, still processing everything.
then she limply dropped her head against the table, her back slightly shaking. nothing but sobs of a little girl were heard from the house. she tried to calm herself down, trying to breath steadily as a tear slipped from her eyes, a teardrop just sat there on the table.
just as the clock stroke 12, she wiped her tear-streaked face, finally bringing her head up with all her leftover energy.
"why can't you let me do what i wanna do?" she whispered desperately, wishing upon the night sky.

pop pop's ice was going to open that day, but kai didn't know the exact time, so he came after lunchtime. as he looked back and forth between his phone and the road, cold sweats went down his forehead, his pace faster and his breathing becoming more unsteady as each minute pass by.
a few yards in front of him, he saw a horde of excited people. at first he was confused, why was there was a lot of people in this time of the day? but he took another glance at his phone, and he instantly gasped in realization.
pop pop's ice!
he ran and ran, and there it was. the shop was painted in all sorts of colors, as if it was showered with rainbow. a giant logo covered almost the entire shop, and the parking lot was vast with a crowd of ice cream enthusiasts. kai quickly paced towards a group of teenage girls that were last in an inexplicably long line.
hueningkai soon breathed in relief knowing that he made it in time.
2 hours later...
"welcome to pop pop's ice! what would you like to order?" the cashier asked the group of girls in front of hueningkai with a hoarse voice. he seemed worn out, with a small bag under his eyes.
inside the shop, every single table were filled with laughter and smiles, reliving his childhood when the kids yelped in joy with an ice cream on their hand. despite the fact that the shop was pretty massive, the people made it seem like it was small. a tiny smile crept up on kai's face looking at the full tables.
"what flavors do you have?" one of them asked in anticipation.
"well, we only have 3 chocolate and 2 vanilla left." he told, smiling because his shift was about to come to an end.
"then we'll have all of them please." another girl ordered in an almost ignorant tone.
what?!
"the total would be..." the cashier voice started to fade away as kai tried to process what the girl just said. why did she order all of them when there's only four of them?? he thought, a scowl forming on his face. he lined up for 2 hours, his legs were sore and wobbly, and he spared his time to line up just so the girls could waste it? hueningkai got more and more furious as they saw the expressions in the girls' faces.
"sorry kid, no more ice cream." the cashier exclaimed in pity, bringing kai back to reality. he sighed in defeat, knowing he couldn't do anything about it.
the men and women behind him groaned and scoffed, disappointed that their time was also wasted for nothing. the cashier guy was starting to close up the counter, and hueningkai was just right there, staring blankly at the sight in front of him without realizing that a tear rolled down his cheeks.
"kid, you can come here again tomorrow, we open at 8." a staff approached him, holding his shoulders. kai looked at the staff and slowly nodded before dragging his feet home.
he was looking down at the concrete sidewalk, feeling so hopeless. the dashing cars were inaudible anymore, it was just a blur for kai. the sun didn't sting anymore, he can sweat all he wants. he felt desperate, his hands dropped to his sides lifelessly, his face and neck pale.
in the midst of all the feelings, a hand suddenly grabbed kai's hand from behind. he turned to find an unfamiliar girl holding his hand with force. he looked straight into her eyes, still shocked. the girl looked fierce with short hair, wearing those stripy dress. at first she had a look of determination, but it soon melted into a soft smile, showing off those cute dimples and eye-smile.
damn, she's cute.
"come with me." she stated, dragging kai with her as she walked onto the direction kai came from. hueningkai was really confused seeing a stranger pulling him as if they have been friends for years. but a part of him told him to trust her, so he kept on walking with her leading the way.
hueningkai got more confused when they ended up in front of the shop again. she stopped and stood on the empty parking lot, and a 'closed' sign hung on the door of the shop.
"it's closed, there's no point." kai sighed, turning to head back home. sadness almost overwhelmed him when out of nowhere she took his hand again.
"what do you want?" kai groaned, lazily facing her.
"i told you to come with me, right?" she reminded and dragged him without warning. hueningkai almost fell, but he regained his balance as he followed her behind the shop.
"come on." she gestured him to come in when she opened the backdoor of the shop. his eyes widened for a second, looking at the girl in disbelief.
"are you sure this is okay?" kai hesitated, walking into the kitchen in doubt.
she shrugged, "my dad owns this, so it's fine."
the kitchen was really neat, all of them seemed brand new. unlike the shop, the kitchen was quite compact, leaving a space for only around four to five people to walk around the room. the familiar scent of ice cream filled up his nostrils as he breathed.
"what's your favorite flavor?" she asked, looking busy as she took some stuff from the fridge. what she said interrupted kai's observation of the kitchen.
"chocolate chips." he answered, smiling like a goof.
"wait, you said your dad owned this shop?" he reassured. she just nodded in response, mixing ingredients in the bowl.
"pop pop made ice creams in carts back then, not a lot of people know. kids used to come up to his cart with squeals of excitement." she giggled, "i'll never forget it."
"i used to go to his cart, that's why i came today. oh yeah, how is he?"
she froze for a moment, a blank expression on her face. then she resumed to what he was doing "...he died a few years ago." she muttered, giving a sad smile before focusing on doing something with the bowl.
y/n was bummed when she heard pop pop died out of cancer. she broke down into tears the second she heard the heart-breaking news. pop pop was the first one to discover her passion for making desserts, pop pop used to bring her along when he'd sell in his cart. in fact, he would allow y/n make the ice cream with him.
but now that pop pop's gone, she wasn't allowed to do what she wants, and a part of her wanted pop pop back. but she knew that her dad wants the best for her future. that's why she played along.
"i'm sorry to hear that." kai replied, sadness obvious in his tone. y/n smiled at him, "it's fine. i've moved on." she then took a cone and placed a scoop on top.
"here ya go." she offered, and hueningkai doubted for a second.
"it's not poisoned, right?" he trembled in fear, looking at her.
she chuckled at his reaction, "no, why would i poison a stranger?" she sassed. somehow that calmed hueningkai.
"right." he still eyed her suspiciously, slowly licking the ice cream.
"oh yeah, related to that. we haven't properly introduced ourselves!" she exclaimed, holding her hand out. "i'm y/n."
"hueningkai." he took her hand, shaking it. they did that for a while, looking intensely into each other. and finally y/n decided to break it first, putting a strand of her hair behind her ears.
why was my heart beating so fast?
why was her touch electrifying?
"i saw you walking out of the shop with your head down. it wasn't fair that those four girls took FIVE ice creams. that's why i took you here." she explained, breaking the awkward silence.
"you noticed?" kai retorted.
"yeah, i couldn't see you sad like that..." her voice drifted off after realizing what she said.
"come here" kai patted on the counter he was sitting on as he took a big bite of the ice cream.
"oh my god y/n this is soooo good." kai complimented, heat crept up y/n's neck as she sat next to him.
"thanks." she looked down, trying to hide her blush.
kai - who noticed she was looking away from him - lifted her head up with his index finger, noticing her blush. as they stared at each other, he also noticed she looked... sad.
after realizing what he did, he quickly put his hand away, rubbing it against his lap. but they remained gazing into each other's eyes, both admiring their facial features.
"are you okay?" kai whispered, the sparkle in her eyes starting to fade away. she held her head down for a second, preparing herself for a rollercoaster of emotions. somehow, she trusted him even though they just met. the faint sound of the streets were herad in the distance as she took a deep breath, trying not to break down.
"how i wish my dad would allow me to make ice cream here..." she confessed, looking up to the bright ceiling that lighted up the kitchen.
"i'm sure someday he will." he comforted, engulfing her in a side hug. as kai's arms encircled y/n's shouders, she leaned onto his chest, his woody smell refreshing and relaxing.
"do you go to my school?" kai asked, breaking the comfortable silence that lasted a few minutes. he felt her nodding against his chest.
"yeah, i think so. i've seen you somewhere" she replied, looking up to see his angel-like face.
"why didn't you tell me?" he mumbled, also looking at y/n that was still in his warm embrace.
"because..." she paused, "because i didn't want you to judge me."
hueningkai simply stared into her mesmerizing eyes, smiling at her answer. he caressed her blushing cheeks with his other hand, still keeping eye contact.
"well, i didn't." kai stated, placing a few strands of her hair behind her ears. her cheeks were crimson red, but kai found it adorable.
"really?" she gasped in disbelief, their faces now only centimeters away without them noticing. she could feel his unsteady breath. he took a glance at her lips, knowing that it was going to happen.
without hesitation, their lips met. for a while, their lips didn't move, but slowly she moved her lips in sync with him. her hands found his nape as she pulled him closer to her until there was no more space in between them.
she could taste some chocolate in his mouth, sweet and delicate. his hands moved from her cheeks to her waist as the kiss got more deep by each second.
butterflies were flying all over y/n's stomach, and kai felt fireworks all over his body. as they pulled away, both of them searched for air. their foreheads were touching, still in each other's embrace. they could feel each other's heartbeat, fast and intense.
now kai was blushing as she resumed laying her head on his chest. he scratched his head in embarrassment, not knowing what to do next.
"that was my first." she told, and kai played with her hair as he thought about his response, smiling ear to ear.
"mine too. and i'm not gonna lie, i'm glad i gave my first to you." he confessed, his heart beating unsteadily. y/n just smiled. she was now the happiest girl alive, and kai was glad he spent two hours lining up.
because if he didn't, he wouldn't have met y/n.
