[TEXT MESSAGE]

HO= Halmoni
JM= Park Jimin

HO: Jimin! Hey! Are you having fun? How was your flight?

JM: Hey Halmoni!

JM: I'm doing okay! I haven't done much. But I will soon!

HO: Oh?

HO: Are you tired? Did you sleep at your friend's house?

JM: I did sleep. Just not at my friend's house.

HO: What?

HO: I'm calling you right now.

JM: NO. PLZ NOT NOW. I'M ABOUT TO LEAVE.

HO: Leave where? Jimin are you safe?

JM: I'm safe. I promise I'm okay. It's a very long story.

HO: Tell me.

JM: Okay fine.

JM: I'm leaving my friend's place; his name is Taehyung btw. And before I got here, I had to stay at his step brother's house. He looks really scary, but he's actually really nice and he's a police officer from Busan! Our bags got switched at baggage claim, and my phone died and he drove me to his condo.

HO: You went to his house? Do you even know his name?

JM: I do! It's Jeon Jungkook.

JM: And it's okay! He helped me with my scratches after I fell, and he let me sleep and took me to Taehyung's house. He's never been here before either! Isn't that cool?

HO: Well, that's something.

HO: I'm just happy you're safe.

JM: Me too.

HO: Okay... Well... What does this 'Jeon Jungkook' look like?

JM: Well, he's tall.

JM: And he has dark long hair.

HO: Oh no, Jimin honey, please just send a picture. Are you with him?

JM: I am...

JM: But I don't know! What if he sees?

HO: Ask him to take a picture with you. He can't be that scary.

JM: Halmoni, we're getting in the car now. We're heading to a convenience store to get candy. I can't ask him now.

HO: Candy? Jimin, please be careful, too much sugar for you and you know how things end up.

JM: I'm not a kid, Halmoni. I won't eat too much candy.

HO: Okay then.

HO: I love you.

HO: Take that picture!

JM: I love you too!

JM: I'll try!

_______

I shut off my phone after closing my halmoni and I's conversation. I was supposed to speak to her right after my flight, but when things got mixed around apparently my priorities did to. It felt like once I had stepped foot inside Taehyung's place, I had grown wings and began levitate. The interior that I'd been begging to see and imagined a few times before leaving Busan was right there in front of me. Just strolling in with my things was like entering another world and crossing a multi-colored threshold that held the one person that I had befriended to for months.

With another person alongside me. Unexpected to say the least.

Jeon Jungkook, Taehyung's step-brother.

My eyes were glued to him since the beginning; how interesting is it that he's stuck with me even this far.

Jungkook's driving was smooth and slow as he got us back to the open street with the help of the GPS and his constant head movements as he tried to his best to look at signs and arrows so he wouldn't miss anything. I gazed at the man for a little longer before I wiped my eyes in sudden disbelief; did I even blink? I tried to steer my focus to the foreign scenery as we passed many barbershops and nail salons, a few different food places here and there that looked good to stop by before leaving this city.

I didn't notice at first, but the window had been let down and the wind that scuttled over the car had been blowing through the front of my hair. Before I could sit back from the chilly breeze covering my face, Jungkook had spoken.

"You seem to staring out there a lot... Thought it would enhance the experience." The older male as stated warmly. His hands gripped the wheel firmly as he made the next turn in silence that I wanted to fill up.

"I just want to be out there... I don't what it's like but I'm dying to go," another patch of quietude was sewn into the conversation. I undid the loops and untied the knots until it all fell apart, "... I'm sorry for looking at my phone so much," I felt the slow of the car as we were closing in on a small store up ahead, "my halmoni worries a lot." Jungkook pulled into a parking space when he too his turn into empty lot.

Jungkook, after placing the car into park and removing the keys from the ignition, eyed me for around five seconds. His thin lips upturned just a tad at the corners; it was invisible if anyone else were looking.

"Halmoni? She must care for you a lot then. Did she raise you?" I nodded as I unbuckled my seatbelt.

Jungkook scoffed, his eyebrows raising as he opened his car door to exit. My hands panicked as mimicked his actions to leave as well. I hear a small bit of laughter on his behalf, making me question his reaction.

"Wha-what's... What's funny?" Jungkook stopped on his way to the glass doors of the convenience store. His hands stuffed into his front pockets until he pulled one out to point at me from a few feet away.

"It's gives reason for your personality. You're polite, you're young, you don't have anyone to tell you what should and shouldn't do... It explains a lot." My sight locked onto his face as he spoke so certain as he knew me from before. My feet almost were locked in place once he looked at me, the wind had ceased to blow and Jungkook's voice rang in my ears like the sweet cooing of bird in the early morning.

Why didn't Taehyung ever speak about him?

Was it because he lived in Busan?

Could it be that he was worried we'd ever meet?

Jungkook pushed open the glass door and held it there as he waited for me. I rushed over and through the door as another harsh gust of window slammed the side of my body; goosebumps pricked my skin as I scurried inside the slightly heated store area. There were shorter aisles than a supermarket and wider selections than a gas station. There was anything from toilet tissue to birthday cards, my eyes wandered any caught onto any everything before me. My heart began to thump as if I had been resurrected from the dead and taking another look at the world through different eyes.

I mindlessly stepped forward when I noticed a pack of sour gummy worms. But before I count my paces, I stopped in my tracks by heavy hand on my shoulder. My head turned to finally meet the face of Jungkook who didn't wear anything but a serious look that could kill if it were possible.

"Hey, I have... What looks like forty US dollars. Your friend needs you to grab whatever you need with this money. Do you need use all of it? No. Do you need use it at all? I think it would be appreciated, I'm sure. I won't be buying anything, so don't worry about me..." I sucked in a large amount of air through my nose and exhaled as I heeded Jungkook's instructions, "... Do you have an idea on what you'd want--"

My sensed tingled once Jungkook let go of my shoulder and I walked into the candy aisle and scanned the shelves from top to bottom, picking up a pack of gummy bears and lollipops with unique flavors I hadn't seen a day in my life. When I turned around to face Jungkook who stood with wide eyes and crossed arms, his pupils flicked to the bags in my hands before speaking.

"Candy?" Jungkook started off.

"I like sweet things," I admitted, "you don't like them at all, do you? It's not like they'll turn sour once try it."

The other male shook his head, tucking his hair behind his ear. "No... I'm not fan, unfortunately. It's not really healthy either so I don't think I'm missing out on much."

I huffed, trying to look disappointed at his cut and dry response as I crouched down to the lowest shelf to rifled through the mixed selection of candy bars. "Well, I think you're missing out on a lot, sir." I popped back up with a few Twix and Hersheys.

"Am I now?" Jungkook inquired with furrowed eyebrows.

"Surely, gummy worms are great and everyone should be allowed to enjoy them." Jungkook tilted his head at my statement that swelled with pride.

"Are you sure you should be getting so many of those?" My eyes panned down to my occupied hands shrugged.

"I don't think it's a crime, officer Jeon." I watched Jungkook's tongue roll over the inside of his cheek.

"Fair enough, proceed." I flashed a smile at the older man, turning around so I could get closer to the end of the aisle. While I grazed over the other items in the aisle my mind grew bored of the situation and circled around another outlet that led to my lips squirming to let it out once I realized I had been thinking on it for long enough.

My head swung to meet Jungkook's blank eyes that had a dwindled light of concern somewhere in there. "Are you ready to head out?" I shook my head and tried my best to get my words out free of any stress, "... Do you-- have something to say?"

"Yes!" I answered loudly, heat stinging my ears afterward.

"And?" Jungkook encouraged, his hooded eyes stilled on my figure.

I gulped and squeezed the candy bags tighter. "You know when we walked into Taehyung's place it was... Really different? Like... I was really happy to be there and the you-- didn't seem to like it so much..." I breathe out and stood up straight, continuing as I looked Jungkook dead in the eye as I got on with my question that wouldn't stop rolling though my imagination and creating different fake answers for it so I could be prepared, "... Why are you and Taehyung so off... With each other? I know neither of you have said anything-- but it's all I can think about, because we maybe... Maybe we both came here for the same reason? I don't know-Tae seems like a nice guy... I just, I guess I want to know more about him... L-like why he didn't tell me you were his stepbrother or say--"

Jungkook let out a dragging, audible sigh that stumped me in my puzzle of a rant. He fingers pinched the bridge of his long nose before he sucked his teeth and shrugged. "Jimin, look, I haven't seen my hyung in six years... I don't know what he does or says in his spare time away from work-and God, am I just as confused as you. You wouldn't believe it if I said your version of Taehyung is someone I have never met."

My face was like a falling cylinder block from an eighty-story building; such a harsh dent had been put in the atmosphere that just standing in the moment felt like going against the pull of quicksand. I wanted to nod my head and just agree, because who am I to tell the step-brother of my friend that he doesn't know his family well? Who am I to think that I know Taehyung more than him? Jungkook explanation has split everything into two for me; In his eyes, Taehyung seemed to have a double-sided life. His words had sliced my thoughts in half, giving me the portion that made most sense.

We were looking at two different people.

Jungkook arched his right eyebrow. "That answer your question, kid?"

My breath hitched in my throat.

Who was Taehyung before I met him?

"Can I... Ask you something else?" I looked around for anyone who might be passing by the aisle. Jungkook leaned forward a bit so he could my next set of inquisitions. "Why did you decide to come here... I mean, to the U.S and Illinois? Did you come to visit Taehyung? Did you miss him?"

Jungkook had stood there like a lamppost, so easy to pass up and look away from. "Yes and no... Are you ready to check out?"

His delayed response held up the flood gates of my mind, chartering me back to this trip's sole purpose. "Yeah... We can."

β–ͺ︎β–ͺ︎β–ͺ︎β–ͺ︎

After pulling off from the store, Jungkook refused to say another word. It wasn't like I had been trying to get anything out of him, but it wasn't just something I could let coast for much longer. Jungkook wasn't a part of my plan, and I'm sure I wasn't anywhere close to being a part of his. But while he was here, while his presence wasn't being completely washed away like it would be after he finally takes his leave, while he was still beside me in this short amount of time, I needed to get the full experience.

Once we arrived at Taehyung's place, the time wasn't much later only about an hour and a half difference. Jungkook had taken the initiative to start getting the two bags of candy from trunk and carrying them to the front door. I followed behind him, walking into Taehyung's house and takin in the walls and interior for the second time.

I closed the door behind me and Jungkook was already in the kitchen, setting the bags on the counter and taking each package of candy out to sit them on the counter. I watched closely as he seemed to be scrutinizing each one as he went. Soon, he had turned around and held up a bag of skittles with a befuddled gaze.

"You have five of these things-are you sugar deprived?" My neck jerked at his question.

"No! I just like the way they taste... You can have one if you want." Jungkook placed the bag down with a small head shake.

"Nice try, but no thanks." I rolled my eyes at the male, biting my tongue not to quip anything back.

"I'm going to go ahead and get changed-don't go yet! I'll be back soon!" Jungkook wet his lips with an approving nod.

A grin split my lips and I immediately sprinted down the hall to find the guest room that Tae had offered to me. Upon opening the door, the smell of fragrance and ash wafted in the air which made my nose wrinkle. On the brighter side, my things were exactly where I placed. Prior to ever leaving the house, because I couldn't help myself, I sat out my fuzzy purple pajama pants and nice graphic t-shirt with a butterfly printed on the front. I nearly tripped as I made my way to the bed after shutting the door.

I stripped quickly so I could get dressed in the nick of time before Jungkook changed his mind on waiting for me. I sat down on the bed in front of the large window that wasn't open yet, but a few rectangles of light had shed through.

After managing to put my pants and shirt on, my eyes fell into something that looked shaded behind the blinds that the veiled the window's light. I blinked a few times at the small squared shape, my arm extended to reach for the blinds and pull them back in curiosity. My throat went dry once I got a glimpse at the object.

A polaroid.

The pictured was tucked nicely in the corner of the window, the quality of the photo wasn't the best, but the smiles were golden. The photo had a little boy that looked about 10 or 11 years old, hugging an older woman's legs as they both shared a boxy smile. I plucked the photo from the window and held it up so I could see some of the smaller details. I couldn't help but smile at the photo when I flipped it around found a small message written in messy hangul.

'κ·Έλ¦¬μ›Œ λ‹Ήμ‹  μ—„λ§ˆ '
(I miss you eomma)

After squinting to read the scripture I made sure tot as I exited the keep hold of the guest room and traveled back to the kitchen where Jungkook at table, typing to whoever needed to see his message.

"I'm back!" I clarified as I stood at the entrance to the kitchen, waiting on Jungkook to realized which, thankfully, didn't take too long.

"Oh-- yeah, you look... Comfy," Jungkook complimented, and I swear my soul had flown from my body the second I heard it, "you have something in your hand?"

My mind re-opened itself from its daze as I nodded and walked to the table with the polaroid in hand. I took one last glance at it before handing it over to Jungkook who looked down at it without hesitation. His shoulders squared and his neck seemed almost restricted from movement the longer he stared.

Oh gosh, was he going to get angry? Sad?

Was this the wrong decis--

"Where'd you get this?" Jungkook had asked, breaking my realm of thought as he looked back up at me with his dark eyes; his voice dropped a few octaves, making it impossible for me not hear.

My fingers clasped together as I answered. "I just found it when I was changing... Do you know who's in it?"

Jungkook squinted. "You really are invested in this 'friendship' you have, huh?"

"I guess so." I spoke softly, and Jungkook handed the photo out to me.

"You should put that back... It's not yours, nor is it mine. Taehyung likes to keep things private for his own sake..." I took hold of the photo again, my chest growing tight with tension. There's just so much to wrap my head around that hasn't had the chance to come out yet, "... And about earlier- I came here for closure, nothing more, nothing less. So, yes- we did fly in same plane, but we were not looking for the same person."

It was true. Jungkook and I had similar motives, but something about it was obviously different.

And there it was.

Although we had gone through the same airport, came from same town, and flew in the same plane we were flying through two skies. Two completely opposite ones that didn't sound like they had a chance at becoming one.

Jungkook groaned as he began to stand up from sitting at the table. He adjusted his shirt and pants and gave me a firm nod as he reached into his pocket. "Well, here's the change from what we spent at the store. I don't have a clue on when Taehyung gets back, but when he does, he won't have anything to complain about." I took the folded bills from his larger hands and kept it in the hand with the polaroid. Jungkook then headed for the front door and I kept behind him so I could get one last thing.

"Can I borrow your phone?" I blurted, hoping it would be easier.

Jungkook froze up with a puzzled look. "That depends on why you need it."

"Oh, uh... It's not really that important--"

"Then why would you ask?" Jungkook quipped, zipping my lips for few seconds. After a while Jungkook caved a bit hand handed his phone over with a huff. "Alright, it's fine. Just do what you have to."

A million thoughts ran in out of my brain until I came up with solution that would settle a few things for sure. My heart was at the edge of shattering when he walked toward the door, as it was like there was string attaching me to him, and was yanked at that very moment.

I can't just let this slip away this fast.

I swiped my way to the contacts section and typed in my number.

Here goes nothing.

"What're you doing?" Jungkook asked, sounding of me tired already.

I smirked as I named my contact under 'Officer Jeon's Minnie' with a cute kitty emoji beside it. "You're now... My official friend- and now that we're friends, I think you should have this just in case." I turned the phone around to show Jungkook the screen with my contact information.

Jungkook glanced to the phone and back to me. "You're pretty bold, aren't you?"

"If bold means that I can be your friend, then I that's likely who I am right about now." Jungkook hummed, but wasn't irritated or filled with exhaustion- it was delightful.

"And you haven't handed my phone back because?" Jungkook pried, and I stood back with the phone, swiping over to the camera icon.

"Because-- you need a photo for the contact, and my halmoni wants to see what you look like." Jungkook's mouth fell open with an appalled look. Okay, maybe that was bit much? Jeez, I need to learn to be quiet sometimes.

I mean is it really my fault?

He's so good looking and nice, and I haven't really, really talked to another guy before...

None that- made me act like this!

It's like my mouth just keeps going and then he starts talking and I can't stop looking--

Am I having a crush? Is this what 'crushing' is like? Am I allowed to have a small crush on him?

"Jimin... Jimin? Kid do you hear me--" Jungkook's voice had somehow faded back into my ears and laned on the drums of them perfectly to shake me awake.

I gotta stop zoning out that like in front of him.

I could literally feel the blood rushing to my face.

"I-I hear! I'm sorry, I can take it right? I mean-like the photo, we can take the photo and stuff--"

"Slow down... We can. I lost you there for a moment, so are you alright?" Jungkook's worried look plastered all over his face, making the scar above his eyebrow more prominent.

Okay maybe this is what I think it is.

"I'm good, I'm great-let's do it!" Jungkook slowly came over to my side, his warm body heat spreading over to me making me want to fan myself from his close proximity. My back muscles tensed when I felt the light weight of Jungkook's hand on the small of my back, his fingers curved ever so gently to grip my side. With a shaky arm-that I tried my best to hide-I held up the phone to a nice enough angle to fit both of us. I moved my lips a few times to until I was able to find a good enough facial expression to settle on.

Jungkook stuck to a neutral face that didn't make him look any less handsome than before. I clicked the circle to take the picture and afterwards, set it as my contact photo. When I handed it back Jungkook looked down at his phone for a while, his thumb coming up over it as if to save it in his mind.

"It's a nice picture-and this contact name is pretty interesting to go with it." Jungkook added, with a knowing look.

"Ah-- I'll change it..." I reach for the phone, however, Jungkook tucked it away in his front pants pocket.

"No, it's too late now, Minnie. Who is 'mine' apparently?" My heart literally stopped. Yes, it's exactly what I think it is. "I'll make sure to send you that picture, so your halmoni won't have to worry... I'm going to leave, and I hope you don't eat all five of those skittle bags in one day." Jungkook walked to the front door and placed his hand on the knob and twisting it so he could let himself out.

"It was nice meeting you, Jungkook! Thank you for your kindness!" I shouted as he walked from the porch and to his SUV.

He turned around briefly to respond. "You too, kid! Please stay safe! I'm just doing my job!"

I waved at the taller man with a smile and he did the same. I kept my eyes on the SUV until it was pulling off the same as before. My fist clenched as I watched his car ride away from my sight. I rested my head against the door frame and looked down at the photo in my hands.

β–ͺ︎β–ͺ︎β–ͺ︎β–ͺ︎

Multiple hours went buy and all of them I spent in the guest room of the house, starting up at the ceiling. It was around 6 PM now, and I felt as though the day had been wasted away. Taehyung hadn't come back yet and the sun was beginning to set, the sky turning a vibrant ombre of orange and purple, coloring the walls in the warm tone.

I tied to text him a few times, but there wasn't answer. I considered falling asleep, but I didn't want to miss Taehyung when he came. I shifted in the covers of the bed to face the window where I put the photo back in its rightful place.

Just when I thought my efforts were going to be in vain I there was jingle and creak that sounded from the front of the house. Instantly, I jumped up from my spot and listened closely for Taehyung's voice. The patter of footsteps was on a steady incline toward the room which made me stay in place until my friend was scooching their way in bedroom with a bright grin.

"Hey, Jimin-ah." Taehyung greeted me, his work clothes still on and shoes off. His eyes were a bit lazy and hooded with the aftermath of a tiresome day.

"Hey Tae... You look like you had a long day." Taehyung nodded and began stretch his arms.

"I did-- I really did, Jimin..." His voice was rasped, making me cringe a bit for holding in this conversation, nevertheless, Taehyung still kept on, "... How was your day though? I'm sorry I couldn't be with you. I had work and- yeah."

Luckily, I didn't have to think very hard to reply. "Well, I came here and Jungkook took me to the store a few hours ago, and... That was it."

Taehyung's mouth hung open as if I had shared a dirty secret. "What?" I refuted, hoping there wasn't anything I said in wrong way, this is his brother after all.

"You think I can't see your target logo red face from this far away? Oh my god, did you both go to the store or did he take you to his bed first?" My hands came up to my face to hide my cheeks and then fell over my heated ears.

"Taehyung," I whined, "we just went to the store to get candy. It wasn't-- he didn't try or I didn't try either. I wouldn't--"

Taehyung giggled lively. "Ah man... I was just joking with you, Minnie. Jungkook is... He's not really easy to interact with, so I'd be surprised if you managed to make him laugh even once."

"He's... He just seems so perfect? Like, I haven't had a crush before, and I was thinking about what it felt like to have one. And I know it's weird that I feel like this, he's older and he's your step-brother--" I ranted as I thought of different ways to back myself out of this strange game of 'how fast can we make Jimin's heart beat' that every situation had been forcing me to play.

Taehyung cut me off with a head shake. "It's okay... I know you haven't been out much, and he-- from what you say-- sounds like a real dream... So, it's only normal to feel that way. And age has nothing to do with it, Minnie. Be calm- kumbaya, all is good."

A wave of relief flooded my tensed muscles and inflamed cheeks, my hands fell into my lap before I stepped up to admit a few more events from today. "I... Let him have my number."

Taehyung scoffed incredulously. "You're serious-- and he took it?"

I nodded. "Yeah, and I was sort of nervous to do it, because his face or eyes never show much emotion. Like sometimes I can find something and other times I can't, so I don't know what he's thinking and-- and when I was at his condo, I picked up his gun and he saw me, and I thought he was gonna throw me out or kill me, but he didn't. And he just kept being-- and I was so confused and happy at the same time... So when I gave him my number, I was sure he was going to delete or something." Taehyung leaned in, his eyes were lined thousands of questions marks in a row.

"And did he?" I shrugged.

"Well, even though I haven't seen him in over five years, I will say... Jungkook is a... Softy even if he may not look it; I don't think he'd have it in him to kill anyone... It's probably why he became a damn cop..." Taehyung's lips were suddenly flat with realization as his last few words, "... Oh, I don't know if he told you-"

"No, no, I-I knew that... I'm sorry for keeping you up like this. I see that you're tired." Taehyung groaned and ran a hand though his curly locks.

"Ah, no, this is fine- it's actually better than what I had planned. I was just thinking about making a sandwich before bed... But um, before I do- I wanted come in and check on you, and... See what your plans might be for tomorrow since I have an off day. Any cool things you thought about in that scrambled brain of yours?" I chuckled as Taehyung's small remark, patting the bed in search for my list that I didn't have at the moment.

"Well, I had a list and now-- I don't know where I put it, but this idea isn't really on it anyways..." My hands traveled up to the necklace that rested just before my collar bones, feeling the glass dolphin hanging from the string. A faint smile split my lips as I thought of my halmoni passing it on to me with highest of spirits, "... I thought about heading to the aquarium? If that's not much."

"Not at all... I'll look at some tickets. And maybe-- if my luck is right-I could ask 'Jungkookie' to join us?" Taehyung replied with a smug look at the end.

"Yeah... Thank you." I responded as normally as I could manage.

"You deserve it." That was last thing Tae said to me before exiting the room until he yelled out bit later from afar, "I'll make you a sandwich too if you're hungry?"

Before I could respond, there was small buzz next to my thigh that disturbed me. I fished around under the blanket for my phone in order to see the notification I had been waiting to see.

My hand lost its grip on my phone when I read Jungkook's last message for the 30th time as if it were going to start disappearing if I didn't. My hands covered my mouth as I kicked the air with both of my feet.

Alright, it's okay, it's just a nickname.

Just a nickname.

It was just one small thing.

God, give me the strength not to--

Another familiar-- defiantly repeated-- shout came from the front of the house, springing me back to reality. "It's a really nice sandwich you know! I can still make one!"

"Coming!" I replied, pulling myself from my bed to walk through the hall and come out into the kitchen were Taehyung stood at the counter next to all of the necessary ingredients for his sandwich, including ham, cheese and some bacon strips.

"Excited for one of the best meals you'll have in your life?" Taehyung teased.

"Totally."
