Inessa Smirnoff never thought she'd end up in hiding. But that's exactly where life has taken her. And yet, she was happier than ever. She no longer had General Kirigan breathing down her neck or the Second Army constantly watching her. Inessa finally felt free. Well, other than the fact that they were still being hunted. East Ravka was convinced that Alina Starkov aided the Darkling and was wanted for her crimes. While both Mal Oretsev and Inessa were seen as deserters by the First and Second Armies. But West Ravka wasn't interested in its eastern counterpart's problems, which allowed the trio to freely plan their next move.
A move centered around the Sea Whip.
Inessa would never admit it aloud, but she thought the search for the Sea Whip was a waste of time. She didn't think Alina needed another amplifier. What she did need was proper training. But with Baghra still in East Ravka, there was no one to teach the Sun Summoner to control her abilities. So Inessa gave in and helped Alina and Mal search for answers. But the Heartrender never thought they would actually find anything. They found information that brought them hope and Inessa felt ready for them to continue their adventure.
That was until they were discovered.
Now Inessa, Mal, and Alina were on the run from the First Army, who were determined to bring them in. They never thought the chase would lead them to two Shu and a boat larger than the Smirnoff girl had ever seen. And they certainly never thought they would ask for help from a privateer. But what threw Inessa off the most was how familiar their captain looked. He reminded her of someone she knew years ago, someone she never thought she'd see again. And a simple smirk from the young blonde was enough to tell Inessa that her suspicions were true.
Inessa finally found what she was looking for.
