Tsukishima Kei's POV:
It was supposed to be 'a yet another day' in my life. Just like every other useless day I spent in school, just like every other boring day I spent in college, just like every other tiring day I spent in training and maybe an interesting or even the fulfilling job I had before this promotion.
Just another day...
Except for the fact that my mother and my brother were hovering over me, every damn second, to make me feel giddy and excited as they were about today. The first day of my job in Keishicho's Headquarters (Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department). My first day as the Superintendent of Police. I had to report for duty in the Headquarters but my mom decided to cook my favorite food for breakfast and lunch, thinking it would make my day more special. After all, it was a thoughtful deed.
"Excited about today, huh?" my brother tried to make small talk as he got ready for his mundane job in the stationary company as he stood next to me near the mirror.
"Yeah."
"Well, be more excited. You have no idea how proud I am of you!" he ruffled my hair, adjusted my coat and tie. At the end of the day, I'm his younger brother and he likes to think that I need him and his futile validation.
He finally left my apartment after that pathetic bonding session to be the inept product manager in his stationary company, checking pens and pencils, managing the products, and whatnot. A boring job of his that made me question a few things for myself, every freaking day.
Why did I join the police force when I had a normal job at the Sendai City Museum waiting for me on a silver platter? Was it the adrenaline? Or was it the chase? Or was it the money? And my mind drifts to the perfect answer every damn time. An answer that makes me want to go to this job with enthusiasm.
Blood!
Funny, how a condiment so red, warm, and slimy keeps me in place; keeps my urge to slowly torture and mince up the souls of every other irritating, non-intelligent human species that shouldn't even exist in the first place. Honestly, everyone irritates me. So, it wasn't a surprise when I had the urge to kill anything and everything in this world. However, this promotion will provide me with a chance to see more of it, more of blood. Essentially, I am here because I spilled some blood.
If it weren't for this badge that I wear, I am pretty sure I'd be nothing but a murderer. But now, I have this power to judge a life, if that life deserves to live in this world, if that life will give me joy when I grant them their ultimate gift.
Death.
My highs hit a new low when they screamed in pain from the gunshot that tore through their flesh as blood gushed out from their wounds, marinating them in their misery. Well, it was a beautiful dance as their legs crumbled and they fell on their knees. The look on their face, well, only the privileged like me can see a man so frightened, petrified, and pathetic, begging for life. Tears of pain streamed down their chin and the screams of agony that left their lungs were just the cherry on top.
Be that as it may, the ones I have killed so far are no good men who deserved to live. A couple of convicted murderers who tried to escape from custody is all. It was a privilege to end them and I was honored with this promotion.
"Here, I have packed your lunch, make sure to eat it on time, Kei!" my mother chirped, patting my shoulders. She still looks at me with those eyes, full of care and affection like I'm some broken and damaged soul that requires her nursing to stay sane.
"Okay!"
"Ahhhh! If you had a wife, I wouldn't have to worry about you," she heaved a sigh, cupping my face as a sad expression bloomed on hers. She hoped that I would give in to her proposal, to marry some dumb bitch if she kept pushing.
Ugh, how irritating.
She has this pathetic assumption that I've lost my soul ever since my girlfriend died and she also thinks that I've lost my humanity ever since I made my first kill. She has this presumption that I need to get married and it would prevent me from going berserk. Well, I'm not a person who is against her idea of marriage. It's those stupid girls she chooses for me.
A few years ago, I was obsessed with a girl in college. My mother liked her way too much. We dated for a while, had sex, and acted like every other couple would. And one sudden day, she hanged herself to death. No suicide notes, no suspects. Plain old suicide; caused by depression.
Or so they thought.
She used to tell me that I drove her crazy, which was true. I drove her crazy; crazy enough, that her only salvation was to die. She was a fool to think that she could break up with me and lead a happy life.
This is exactly why stupid people don't deserve to live and that includes uselessly hot-blooded people as well. At first, I thought she was pretty intelligent and honestly, she was quite the beauty too. And then, she wanted to leave me because she found my diary and my voice notes that I dictated on how I stalked her and tricked her into loving me. She even called me a psychopath. She thought I was deranged and deranged is what she became. In the end, she did leave me to be with the angels and demons.
Technically, she was my first prey; my first kill. She was the one who got me addicted to blood; she was the reason behind my thirst to kill. That particular day holds a special place in my heart. After all, she climbed onto a rolling chair in her room when her eyes were bloodshot and swollen from all the crying and the tiredness that consumed her, upon my advice. She was so done with life that she didn't even retort. She had finally learned her place.
She was like a puppet, my puppet.
Something snapped inside me the moment I heard her neck snap. Indeed, it was me who pushed the chair away from her legs. Honestly, I was a little scared but when she suffocated from the lack of oxygen, her eyes looked beautiful than it ever had; it popped out, quite literally. Her hands clawed her neck, trying to pry the rope off as tiny dews of blood formed on her skin. Her choking noises filled the room and it was a pleasant noise; it was music to my ears. A few suffering moments passed and then came the pale and peaceful. I really had killed her.
It was an overwhelming sensation; truly an unearthly feeling. It welled up on my chest and I realized who I was; that was the moment I felt unequivocally satiated. Satisfied. It was horrific. It was a frenzy. It was my poison.
"Itte kimasu (I'm leaving)!" I murmured monotonously, hiding my nasty smile. I left the house, clearing my thoughts, with the lunch my mother prepared.
I drove my car to the Headquarters expecting to work in the special ops since I was promoted and specifically chosen to work in the Headquarters. I also thought it wouldn't be too bad of an idea to handle some cool machinery that puts down people in their grave which also quenched my bloodlust. I parked my car after the security checks and hopped into the elevator, I pressed 12 as mentioned in the mail that I received a few days back and walked straight into the office. My office.
A floor full of police officials running around, doing their job to the fullest to protect their citizens. I walked past a few cabins all of whom were higher officials and I finally reached the Assistant Commissioner's room who also happened to be my reporting officer.
The room was arranged quite neatly while some files were scattered over the table along with the golden nameplate that read "Sawamura Daichi, Assistant commissioner of police - Police affairs."
"Tsukishima Kei, reporting for duty sir!" I spoke to the room of three, saluting my higher officials.
A grey-haired man with a mole under his left eye, and two men with short dark hair, all of them in a nice suit, were conversing with each other and I didn't want to mistake my supervisor for someone else. One of the dark-haired men looked like he carried the weight of the world on his shoulders and the other just looked very dead and surly. So, I safely greeted them all.
"Oh, that's great. Uh, all the best?" the grey-haired man conveyed a wish with a half-hearted smile and went back to the conversation as the other two men eyed me and acknowledged me with a nod.
I just stood there as I wasn't dismissed from the room and the three men discussed a murder that happened in Karasuno High, a school in Miyagi prefecture. A student was kidnapped 5 days ago on the school grounds and a sack dripping with blood, suspected to be the student was left behind today, on the exact same spot where the kidnapping happened.

"This is Sugawara Koushi, my best friend. He works at the school. He is the Head of the Mathematics department." One of the dark-haired men spoke, introducing Sugawara-san to me as he sat on the chair. So, this is Sawamura-san.
"Ennoshita Chikara, Senior superintendent!" the other dark-haired male promptly introduced himself.
"You are on this case, meet up with Kuroo-san, Assistant commissioner - Criminal Investigation. He will be by the end of the hall." Sawamura-san issued an order which I gladly accepted.
Blood. My day just got much better.
A blond man in a black suit with two piercings on his left ear and a headband, reeking of cigarettes and an expensive cologne, entered the room.
"Hey you!" He called out to me. I assumed he was also one of the higher officials as he appeared to be a little older than any of us in the room.
"Yes sir?"
"You are the new one, aren't you?" he mumbled, looking at his watch. He looked like he was getting late and was supposed to be somewhere else at the earliest.
"Yes sir!"
"Okay, catch. We are moving!" He announced, throwing the keys to a car as he swiftly turned around and started to walk out of the room, leaving me baffled.
"Well, what are you looking at. He said move!" Ennoshita-san ushered me to leave.
I dashed after him towards the elevator asking, "We are heading to the crime scene? I was asked to meet up with Kuroo-san-"
"I will do the talking; you will do the listening." he declared, interrupting me as he pinched his forehead and collected his thoughts as the two of us were now waiting for the elevator. He seemed like he was a calculating man and he asked, "Do you know what your rank is?"
"Superintendent."
"Ukai Keishin, Commissioner - Police affairs and Special ops. You whole lot, you all work for me. Got it?"
It's him. The legendary Ukai Keishin. The man who led the special ops force, Anti firearms squad into victory. It's said that the mission was called Counter Riot Operations - C.R.O. A successful mission that wiped out every member involved in the arms trafficking which included the trafficking of weapons-grade plutonium. They also caught their leader, Deidara Katsuhiko who calls himself 'The Nuke'.
"Yes sir!" I responded and the lift dinged open the following second.
"You are a quick study! I like it. Namae wa (What is your name)?" he questioned, lighting his cigarette as we walked to his car in the parking space.
"Tsukishima Kei, sir."
"Hmmm, you are quite tall. What are you 6'3?" he asked, scanning me up and down as we climbed into his car. A government-issued, Black Toyota Fortuner.
"Almost 6 foot 5. Uh, 6'4.9 to be precise." I answered, adjusting my specs. I turned on the ignition and enquired, "Where to?"
He shared the location and informed me that we were picking up someone and heading to the High Court. He sat beside me in the front, and I kept the windows open for the smoke from his cigarette to escape. He offered me one, which I politely declined and I started to drive to the pick-up point. It is not that I don't smoke or drink but today, I just didn't feel like it. Plus, I wanted a pristine record with my superiors.
I stopped the car in the location mentioned and realized I was in front of the biggest luxury apartments in the city. Mori living. We waited and waited until a woman in her late twenties, about [Your Height] foot tall, opened the backseat door and clambered onto the seat. She was wearing a red formal bodycon dress, matching the warm colors of autumn with a black coat that accentuated her look. She was carrying a handbag, some files along with it, and a pair of very sharp black heels in her hands. She was a mess.
Red. Her dress was blood red.
"Well, stop gawking and move it. We are late!" she ordered and I uttered a 'tch' before I started the car. She was the one that was late and I am supposed to 'move it'?
"[Y/N], you need to stop drinking!" Ukai-san advised the woman on the back seat as he inhaled a large puff out of his newly lit cancer stick.
"You stop smoking and go home. Your wife keeps calling me, asking about you." She hissed, putting on her shoes as her [H/C] hair fell onto her face.
"She is your sister; you can't even handle her and you call yourself the best lawyer in this whole damn city?" Ukai-san questioned her and her prestige along with it to which she huffed like a child.
Tchhh, a Lawyer? But she is not even punctual and she is so clumsy. Who the hell made this woman a lawyer?
"She is your damn wife. Why am I the middle man? Let me know if you guys are going to divorce. I'll be happy to do the job of separating you both. Until then, keep your wife and your business out of my freaking cellphone." She commanded, tying her hair into a bun.
"We are not getting a divorce. Thanks. Why can't you just answer the phone? And why the hell are you mad at her?" he responded, trying to get her to answer his questions.
Ugh, Family banter. Just shut up!
"She called me and ruined the best night of my life. Tetsu and I were just getting to the good part. God, that man is so agile-"
"No. No. I don't want to hear it." Ukai-san declared.
"Oops, I did it again-"
"Please don't quote Britney Spears. Just don't!"
SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!
And there was the silence that I wanted the most. I wondered if I yelled that out loud due to the immense irritation I was experiencing, but to my surprise, that woman had put on her earphones and had started to hum the song.
"Did you say Tetsu? As in Kuroo Tetsurou?" Ukai-san questioned, stupefied as he forcefully removed one of her earphones.
"No, I didn't," she lied.
At that moment, I had an intense urge to drive the car into a truck and kill these two right then and there. I deliberately sped up the car and they finally stopped talking. I knew I was just a Superintendent in that office but this was scut duty to drive the superiors around and I hated it with every fiber of my being.
"Yes, you did! Damn you [Y/N]. You seriously need to stop sleeping with my co-workers!" Ukai-san began, again.
"Then you need to stop introducing me to the hot ones in your office. All of you are like so hot..." She dragged, applying some lip stuff and that was again a shade of red. She smacked her lips, perfecting the red tint and she continued, "A woman has needs, mind your own business!"
They can't seem to realize the fact that there was someone else in the car along with them and they had no shame discussing their family affairs. However, it was quite a short ride from the apartment buildings to the supreme court, situated in Chiyoda. The minute the car stopped in the parking lot, she got out of the car, looking like a professional. Some might even say she looked like a bitch with all that red from her head to toe along with her resting bitch face but for some reason, I found it appealing.
"Did you say all of you, as in including me?" Ukai-san teased her, enveloping her into his arms. It appeared as if they were flirting.
"Did I say that?" she questioned back with a sly smile across her face.
"You sort of did!" Ukai-san replied as she began to walk away from him.
"Well, if you wanna know the answer to that, you gotta divorce my sister. Maybe then I will think about answering that question!" she chuckled with a wink, waved us goodbye, and entered the court building.
"Sir, *ahem* it's not my place but that sounded like you two were-"
"Damn right it's not your place. Besides I love my wife. We were just pulling each other's leg." He timidly responded, texting someone from his cellphone.
"Point taken!"
We entered the court building and met with a blonde woman with a neatly tied ponytail. She was in all black, looking completely formal with subtle makeup. She was short, barely 5-foot-tall and she even wore some kitten heels but even then, she was utterly short.
"Hitoka Yachi, Public prosecutor." She introduced herself and I acknowledged her with a nod.
Finally, someone who looks the part.
"You are sure that we will be winning this case? You are sure that you can prove that 'The Nuke' was in the harbor that night?" Ukai-san questioned her, almost making her take a step or two backward.
"I will do my best, sir. Trust me! but let's not forget who he has in his corner," she replied, reassuring him with a deep sigh but her eyes held fear. The fear of losing this case. Calling her nervous would be an understatement.
"Today is the final hearing of the Nuke's case?" I enquired Ukai-san, taken aback.
"Yeah!"
"It must be a piece of cake. You caught them red-handed-"
"I am sure you are aware of the fact that he escaped before being processed in. Plus, that son of a bitch has a shitload of money and connections with god knows who. So, let's not get ahead of ourselves."
A small discussion continued to progress between Ukai-san and the public prosecutor. A few minutes later, we finally entered the courtroom and we were asked to be seated. Ukai-san sat along with the prosecutor as he represented the state on this case while I took a seat in the viewing gallery just behind them.
The defendant, 'The Nuke', and his lawyer entered the courtroom and that was a tad bit shocking and completely unforeseen. His lawyer was none other than the woman I just picked up. His lawyer was Ukai-san's sister in law, the one he called [Y/N].
I needed a second to process the fact that, that clumsy woman with the questionable character was going to advocate for a criminal; for a scum and she was able to scare a public prosecutor. She might even win this if she was the best as she claimed to be. It was almost like the calm before the storm; she was confident, her eyes reflected a wicked intelligence while her sly, confident smirk kept growing a hundred folds.
Announcements began to thunder across the courtroom which sounded inaudible and muffled to my ears as her prying eyes met mine, only for a brief second. And that's when I knew...
In this world where I live and breathe, I will either own her or kill her. Nothing between.
