parts; i. districts, what they're
known about & clichés
I. Districts
Okay, in this chapter I will be discussing more in depth what each district provides and clichés that authors often use when they create OCs.
District 1
Members of District 1 were known to produce luxury items such as jewelry. Due to their skill in craftsmanship, the goods that came out of District 1 were used to decorate the Capitol. Those who lived in District 1 were some of the wealthiest citizens of Panem. Tributes from District 1 were known as "Careers" because they trained for years before competing in the Hunger Games.
District 1 females:
I always have so much to say about this
tribute. It is such an underused role. Listen to me, it's not a crime to make this tribute at least somewhat bearable! Usually they are flirtatiously shallow and pathetic and always self absorbed and have to be 'sexy' to cover up the fact that they're not good at weapons. They are most of the time the lowest scoring of the Careers. Their preferred weapons always seems to be a dagger, continuing with the 'silly & shallow girly' narrative. They are also probably the least likable of all the tributes, and always seem to die the most undignified deaths before anyone else in the Career pack. Often killed off by mutts or their own allies if they don't die in the bloodbath. Arguably the most overused and prominent stereotype. District 1 females can be very smart and deadly, I mean look at Cashmere, a canon character that doesn't follow these stereotypes. Don't just make up a stereotypical blondie who dies first in the Games. Those
fanfictions also tend to be more boring and lacking
of expertise writing skill. I have personally seen three different fanfictions have a girl from 1 named Diamond who dies early on. If you are planning to kill off your girl from District 1, try to develop her more and plan the death at a reasonable time. It would be unreasonable if every girl from 1 died off in the bloodbath. Try to stay away from mutts, since because of Glimmer the entire population is stereotyped to such deaths.
District 1 males:
These tributes always tend to have a direct death wish on the other players, and are generally characters with little to no backstory. They almost always seem to be snobbish, self-centered, and egotistical to the point of being pathetic. Sometimes fangirls even make them like a laid-back and flirty/charming version of Cato. Please stop that. Also, they almost always have a victor family and end up disgracing their entire family by losing. That is unrealistic; there are way too many of these really. They also have mostly violent, bloody deaths though they always die after their district partner. District 1 Male is usually portrayed as a cowardly bully, intimidating outside the arena but wouldn't last a day once they go in. A common pet peeve is how because of how Marvel killed Rue fans would have them kill the protagonist's often twelve year old ally and then be killed by the protagonist for revenge. This is literally a boring copy of the 74th HG and no one likes that. Instead try to develop this more and add details. You may use mutts on this, since it is rarely seen in the fandom.
District 2
Located in the Rocky Mountains, District 2 was one of the largest communities in Panem. It was also home to wealthy citizens, resulting in a positive relationship with the Capitol. District 2 was known for its masonry and weapon manufacturing. In Mockingjay, it was revealed that the Capitol's army of Peacekeepers trained in District 2. It was one of the career districts, being close to the Capitol.
District 2 females:
District 2 is a huge source of Mary-Sues, many of which secretly love Cato. This is also overused, like the District 1 blondie stereotype, and almost as annoying. Too many fanfictions have protagonists from District 2, and it is generally an overused district since their tributes tend to be the strongest. They almost always use knives, and die later in the Games. Usually, they die some heroic death and is grieved by all the Careers, like her male counterpart. And their only personality traits are acting like they're Clove, trying to be like Clove and being Cato fangirls. Writers, just stop all this nonsense. Personally I think that this tribute is
definitely a bit overused as a protagonist, but I do
recommend making this character out of the
normal. Since they are almost always skillful and
deadly, why not throw in some weaknesses? This
will make your character more likable actually, not
just the one perfect girl who knows 20 different
ways to kill you with a knife. Death ideas could be
mutts -since again, it is only overused on D1 girls-
or Gamemaker-created disasters. They could also
be slain in battle since a common cause of their downfall is their arrogance.
District 2 males:
Ugh, this stereotype is so annoying. The
brutish killing machine who gets the highest
training score and is the last Career to die. This
eliminates an awful lot of reader inferences and
they just go like "Oh, the district 2 boy wins again.
So boring." If you are going to make them win, make sure it's for a good reason. No one wants the victor to be a lapdog, out of all other tributes with such fantastic backstories. Don't just make them, idk, crush on their district partner. There are too many D2 love stories. The fandom mostly does not accept Cato Hadley copies in fanfictions.
District 3
The primary industry in District 3 was technology as the people there produced televisions, computers, and other electronics. During Katniss' Victory Tour, she noticed that District 3 was one of the more rebellious districts. One of the most memorable members who came out of District 3 was Beetee, a victor who displayed his engineering and technology knowledge multiple times during the Second Rebellion.
District 3 females:
Unfortunately, I don't have a lot to say
about District 3 females, but those tributes always tend to be like the most stereotypical version of a "nerd". Come on guys, I'm sure you can be at least a bit more original. And the weird thing is that authors make these females obsessed with knowledge and continuously say that they're very smart only for them to die very early on in the arena. They also are stereotyped to wear glasses and act extremely shy sometimes, so much that it's infuriating.
District 3 males:
Oh boi, District 3 males... They always are on the geeky, techy side. Like the girls of this district, they are stereotypically wearing glasses for some reason, are very shy, introverted and somehow know the answer to every single question in the universe- It is annoying. Also in the beginning they always know less stuff than the girl but then magically the girl forgets everything and the boy is Einstein. And because they end up being "smarter" the authors kill the females off and make the males survive a bit longer due to their wits. And then of course kill them in the next chapter when they're irrelevant.
District 4
District 4 specializes in the fishing industry. The citizens in District 4 were known to be wealthy and very good-looking. Their tributes were also Careers, training from a very early age to prepare for the Games. The most notable members of District 4 were Finnick Odair and Mags Flanagan.
District 4 females:
Ugh. This is one of the biggest sources of Mary-Sues in the fandom. We've had enough characters fall in love with Finnick, thank you. These tributes are often the 'only Careers that stand a chance of winning' for some reason and are generally Mary-Sues. I have seen about 50 different Mary-Sues from District 4 so far. Long, flowing strawberry blond hair, icy blue eyes, a killer tan, yeah right. And who in the right mind would volunteer as tribute if their sister died in the Games just last year? I don't know about you guys, but this is definitely an outrage. District 4 is, in my opinion, tied with District 12 as the most overused fandom district. I don't have any opinions about this
except the simple fact that they are made victor
way too often. I also love Finnick, but try not to make your character have a crush on Finnick. That is in no way original, and may invite accusations of boredom from readers. They also tend to be very lethal and make it to the final few. Most of the time, of course, they win which is too predictable if the fandom is full of District 4 victors.
District 4 males:
This is also one of the ridiculously overused protagonist roles, and they tend to be ridiculously powerful or good-looking. Sometimes they are also quite flirty or just have the same personality with D1 of D2 males, or most commonly a copy of Finnick Odair, extremely unoriginal. Also, they always use the trident, which hints at another copy of Finnick. D4 Male, along with his female counterpart, also is usually impossibly young for a victor. The entire district is often stereotyped as strong and attractive. Again, no hate, but try to kill off this character at some point. I understand that some of you have a habit of growing attached to tributes as you write, but sometimes a twist is needed to make the story more interesting. This is also a ridiculously overused role so watch out while you are writing this character. They can be killed off in almost any way, there are no specific stereotypes for this in the first place.
District 5
District 5 was responsible for power and electricity. The area produced the electricity that powered all of Panem. They housed a hydroelectric dam where many of the citizens worked. The dam became a target by the rebels in Mockingjay as they tried to cut out the power in the Capitol.
District 5 females:
District 5 tends to be underused since there aren't any significant victors coming from it. Because of Foxface (Finch is her real name if you're wondering), D5 female is typically the sly, smart type who lives for a longer time than their district counterpart. An entire district shouldn't be judged because of one person, anyway. They also tend to be very introverted and know every plant to exist while at the same time don't know how to use any weapon and only runs away every time. Try making this tribute a little extroverted or loud. If you asked me, I would say there are too many Foxface wannabe's in this district already. Death
ideas are honestly anything, they could as well die
because of stupidity or anything that suggests that
you aren't any average stereotypical author. Just
please, not the nightlock again.
District 5 males:
This role is very underused, often dying
in the bloodbath when the Games begin since there
aren't any significant D5 males in the book or movie. Sometimes, rarely though, they might be stereotyped as drunkards because of that victor from D5 who was an alcoholic. However, this is still underused and undefined as stereotypical in
general, that's good. Not many ideas for this, but try to maybe make this character survive past the first day? Or for once make them actually interesting or a victor. For deaths, I don't have any opinions but if they were struck by lightning wouldn't it be a bit ironic.
District 6
The core industry within District 6 was transportation. It served as the hub for the transport network throughout all of Panem. Like District 3, District 6 supported Katniss and the rebellion's efforts against the Capitol.
District 6 females:
District 6 is often stereotyped as the
morphing addict district because of the 2
morphling addicts in Catching Fire. These tributes are very underused and if used they are killed off rather quickly or just die an irrelevant death that isn't mentioned. Try to make them more likeable, especially since they come from the transportation district and they could have more knowledge about the other district's weapons and plants.
District 6 males:
Again like their female counterparts, the D6 males are severely underused and generally stereotyped as the morphling district. They can be quite helpful so I would suggest making them more likeable. Or, if you want you can make them so helpful and likeable so that you can kill them off quickly and still leave the readers shocked due to the death of a character they liked. Just remember; plot twists are desirable, but never overuse them because readers could just rule you as desperate for viewers.
District 7
District 7 supplied Panem with copious amounts of lumber. The area was said to be surrounded mostly by trees. The most noteworthy member of District 7 was Johanna Mason, a victor who used the District's signature weapon, the ax.
District 7 females:
Okay, personally these are my factorite tributes and it pains me that they're so underused... District 7 tributes always have to use the ax and they almost always die early on, just like the D3 girl. This isn't really a stereotype but rather a way most fans see them. I'Il still mention this though, because so many D7 tributes are portrayed like this in
fanfictions. They can be so much more than an "irrelevant" bloodbath death; first of all they probably know edible and non-edible plants and generally more about nature since their indistry is wood (which means those kids grew up around forests)
District 7 males:
Just like District 7 females, these tributes always have to use the ax. The only difference is that the boys are always lumberjack-sturdy and the girls a bit more varying. The girl almost always dies early on and the boy almost always survives longer. Again, like the females, they can be very helpful but this is one of the neutral districts that don't
really matter when you kill the tributes off. At least try to make the death make sense though, for example it would be ironic but extremely rare if a D7 tribute fell to their death from a tree.
District 8
District 8 was known for their work in the textiles industry. One of their factories was dedicated to producing the uniforms used by the Peacekeepers. Along with a few other districts, District 8 was instantly open to joining the rebellion.
District 8 females:
For some reason, fan authors tend to
make their District 8 tribute the first one to die. I
personally have seen 3 fanfics where one of the D8
kids are the first death. I'm not really sure how this
stereotype was defined, but they always seem to
die early on no matter how much they toughened
up during training. I like to call this the absolute
bloodbath stereotype, commonly seen in districts
6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. Also, in case they didn't die in the bloodbath, they would just hide until the careers find them and kill them, or they would just die an insignificant not mentioned death. I don't have the slightest idea why this speculation came into place, but try to avoid it. I would suggest making this tribute have a bigger role or at least not be a 12 year old or cowardly idiot who died from stupidity.
District 8 males:
Once again, like the females they are severely underused unless the author needs someone to die a brutal yet insignificant death in the bloodbath. Come on people, D8 is canonically one of the most rebellious districts so why are all these tributes cowardly idiots that don't know how to fend for themselves, survive or even know how to hold a weapon. I'm sure you can do better. Just be original & out of the box.
District 9
The principal industry at the focus of District 9 was grain production. The area was the least referenced district in all of Panem. Not much is known about the victors or tributes from District 9.
District 9 females:
I don't have much to day fro these tributes, but for some reason, D9 females always die in the initial Cornucopia bloodbath just like D7, 8, 10 and sometimes 5 & 6. Just like those other districts they are severely underrated and underused. At least, if you kill them of quite early then make them have a memorable death.
District 9 males:
To be honest I'm quite bored of the stereotype that D9 tends to lose both of their tributes in the initial Cornucopia bloodbath. Maybe it's because of that poor boy in the 74th Games who dies first, but who knows? This entire district is probably stereotyped to be like that just because of one person, which is entirely unfair. Hear me out; give. these. tributes. a. greater. role. For once again, it's not that hard to be at least a bit original. The spectrum of deaths here is very wide. Just try not to kill both of them in the
Bloodbath.
District 10
District 10 is one of the poorer districts of Panem. Its main industry is livestock, and provides beef for the Capitol. Since they are in charge of livestock, it can be assumed that District 10 is majority farm land.
District 10 females:
Just like the previous districts before this, these tributes are quite insignificant, underused, and also I've seen D10 females be very pathetic. Just like D8 they're scared little cowards that run off every chance they get. Seems like the authors have really ran out of ideas or are just allergic to the idea of having their D10 tribute have a backstory or just do something. In some fanfics there won't be a literal difference whether the D10 female exists or not. It's enfuriating. They can be very deadly in my opinion, since their indistry is livestock, which means they probably know how to use knives/daggers or have killed animals before.
District 10 males:
Once more, this district is quite insignificant and
underused and both tributes tend to die early on. I don't get why they're so underrated, since in my opinion they can be quite deadly just by their main indistry being livestock. They know how to kill. Animals, yes, but still they're probably good with knives/daggers just as I stated for the D10 females. In modern times I would personally consider this district to be the one with the most serial killers lol. (especially since most serial killers started off by killing animals or being violent towards them as children)
District 11
District 11 was said to be composed of a vast area, possibly the entire Southern region of Panem. Agriculture was the main industry of District 11, as the land was covered in orchards, crop fields, and cattle farms. District 11 was one of the poorest districts, and its citizens lived in small shacks in an area patrolled by Peacekeepers. Rue was one of the most notable citizens that came out of District 11.
District 11 females:
OKAY THATS IT I CANT ANYMORE WITH THE RUE COPIES, FANDOM JUST STOP- oh sorry for snapping. Anyways, Rue copies are basically this tiny little pitiful outlier girl who is always from D11 (if not, she's from 10) who can sing and stuff and is 12 years old. So then, the Rue copy gets murdered by some Career dude and the Career dude gets killed by the protagonist for revenge. Other than that stereotype, this character has a lot of attention and has a lot of fanfictions revolving around the role. If you are going to make the D11 female the protagonist, please try your best to avoid making her a Mary-Sue or a typical insignificant character with no backstory and development who is just revelant because she's a friend of the main character.
District 11 males:
Often, this role is really strong and
intimidating and dies later on in the Games. He is
often very competent with weapons and physical
power. So basically he's almost always a Thresh copy. Try not to make this character a perfect
one. Throw in some flaws, both physical and
mental, to not only make the character more likable
but also the fanfic. Oh and once again, please have some originality. Enough with copy-pasting characters.
District 12
District 12 was the smallest and poorest district in Panem. The district was located in Appalachia, and their primary industry was coal mining. After the Second Rebellion, the coal mine was closed, and the district began to produce medicines. Katniss, Peeta, Gale, and Haymitch were notable members of District 12.
District 12 females:
Ah, the Mary-Sue factory of the Hunger
Games fandom. Like, please. Stop with all of
Katniss's secret sisters and cousins. The word
"Everdeen' in a fanfiction now triggers my gag
reflex. C'mon, learn to be creative. Now, I respect
your fanfics but it's getting kind of annoying. With a 12 female protagonist, the fanfiction often includes a Game with multiple victors caused by
the beautiful, glorious power of love and friendship. People, let me remind you that D12 canonically is known for not being strong contestants in the Games. Just make this character a dull one. You surely don't have trouble doing that when it's other districts like 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
District 12 males:
The 'Lover Boy' stereotype, huh? Often confesses his feelings for his district partner during the interviews and then gets the audience's sympathy and judo-flipped by his district partner. In the Games, he either kills himself for his district partner to win or just wins with his district partner. Man, I've had enough with the Glimmer, Marvel, Clove, Cato, Foxface, Rue, Thresh and Katniss copies... I can't stand a Peeta copy as well. If you want make D12 males the protagonists but not the shy love interest for his district partner heroine.
━ ✦✧✦ ━
That's most of what I wanted to say. I would recommend creating your OCs personalities around their districts because that's where they grew up so it definitely played a role in who they've grown up to be. When you have the characters ready then it's time for creating the plot.
Plot help related stuff on upcoming chapters!
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this chapter and
found it at least a bit helpful. Here's a loaf of
