ch 9
Newt knew that he should not have hope that they survived but he did. He hoped they survived. No one has ever survived a night in the maze but he had hope. He had hope in Amelia and Minho. He even had hope in Thomas. He didn't know what he'd do if he lost Amelia. He also knew if she wasn't on the other side of the doors he and Gally would have to prepare themselves for heartbreak.
They had all slept by the doors that night. They all had been worried and this was the first time they were hoping they would make it. Alby, Amelia and Minho were in the maze. How could they not?
Newt could not asleep at all. Throughout the night he heard the loud screeching of the grievers. He heard screeching more that night than any other night. He had tried to push the thought away that they were okay. Gally stirred beside the blonde boy.
The boy sat up which made Newt sit up as well. "There's a chance they survived, right? There has to be," Gally said as he looked over at Newt. He didn't know what to actually tell his friend. He wanted to answer yes but he didn't want to give him false hope, so he settled on not saying anything.
"Newt."
"Yeah."
"She survived, right?" Gally asked. Newt gulped and he sighed. "She had to have."
"When she comes through those doors we're making sure she gets an earful. She can't just leave and not tell us anything," Gally said and Newt said, "Are you sure you'd be able to give her an earful?"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Newt scoffed, "She's usually the one scolding you. She always turns it on to you. You know how she is."
Gally chuckled nodding. Amelia always made sure she wins every argument even if she was in the wrong. Gally usually starts the argument and she always wins it.
Newt, however just let's her win because she would not drop it. She was one stubborn girl.
The rumbling of the doors woke the Gladers up, lifting themselves off the ground to look inside the Maze.
Chuck who slept right in front of the door kept his hopes up. He believed that they would make it, especially Lia. He believed she would.
There was no one of the other side and Gally's heart dropped. Newt shook his head, closing his eyes.
"I told you, Chuck," Newt whispered to himself. His eyes looking at the empty space, sadly. "They're not coming back."
"But Lia. . ."
The Gladers weren't as hopeful as Chuck. All of them began to fall back to get started on their jobs, doing their best to forget about the four. Gally looked at Newt, whose hands were in fists. He was just a heartbroken as him.
"No way," Zart exclaimed, staring at the far end. He pointed at the figures who made their way towards The Glade, catching everyone's attention. Newt and Gally looked up and they counted to make sure they were four. Their eyes fell on Amelia who was limping beside Thomas.
Amelia had been exhausted and her feet were killing her. Her ankle also had not fully healed, yet. Thomas and Minho were grunting at the weight of Alby. It was just as hard to drag a unconscious the second time around. They were at least glad Alby hadn't woken up. Amelia had worried that he may have not been breathing so she had checked every hour to make sure.
Amelia looked up and she smiled when she saw the Gladers. Her eyes almost filled with tears when she saw them. She looked at Gally and Newt who looked relieved and happy. She must've stressed them out.
"Yes! Yeah!" Chuck cheered.
The rest of the gladers smiled and ran back towards them, glad to see them all. Reuniting with the boys, Thomas and Minho gently laid Alby down to get checked by the med-jacks. They were lucky to have made it through the night without any injuries. They have some scratches and cuts they sustained from the ivy vines but that was all.
Chuck immediately ran to tackle Amelia into a hug. She smiled hugging him back as she caught her breath. It may have been only a night but she had missed him.
"I missed you, Chuck," she said running her hand through his hair. He was like a little brother to her so seeing him again made her happy.
When she gets separated from Chuck, she gets pulled into a hug by Newt. She sighed, hugging him back. She felt safe back in his arms. "You have a lot of explaining to do," Newt whispered. "I was so worried."
Amelia chuckled smiling, "I'm sorry for worrying you." Her eyes moved to Gally who was glaring at her. She knew he was mad that she had left yesterday without telling them and he was even more mad that she was stuck in the maze over night.
The two pulled away and she waited for him to approach him but when he didn't she walked over. "Gally?"
He just stared at her, not answering. "I'm sorry. Can you just give me a hug? I spend a night in the maze and you're not even happy I'm still alive?" she asked. He rolled his eyes before he sighed.
"Amelia, you never think do you?" he asked her. "Gally-"
"Do you care about any of us?" Gally asked her. "What you did was stupid, reckless and dangerous. Do you even care about Newt or me? Because it sure doesn't seem like that."
"Gally," she reached for his arm but he pulled away from her. "Don't touch me. Do you ever think about us?" he asked and she stared up at him with hurt eyes. He turned and walked to the side away from her . She stared at him. Newt walked over to her.
"Just give him some time, Lia."
The girl nodded, blinking away the tears that were forming. She needed to recharge and then she'll talk with Gally.
"You saw a Griever?" Chuck asked Thomas.
"Yeah, we saw one." Thomas said looking over at Amelia.
"They didn't just see it. These two, they killed it," Minho said. The Gladers looked at Thomas and Amelia with wide eyes.

Amelia stood in front of the shed waiting for Gally to exit. They had to have a meeting later but she wanted to catch Gally before that. The two of them needed to talk.
Gally exited the shed and his eyes met Amelia's. He sighed, closing the door.
"Gally."
"We have to get to the meeting."
She stepped in front of him. "Gally please, listen to me," she begged. The boy sighed, closing his eyes but he didn't move to leave. "I am sorry. I shouldn't have left the Glade yesterday. I should've told you guys or I shouldn't have gone at all but I couldn't have let Alby and Minho go alone."
Gally rolled his eyes and he stepped to the side. "I know you're mad at me and you have every right to be but what did you expect me to do?"
"Not to risk your life by going into the maze on some whim. You know how things work here. Nothing we do is unplanned. You cannot just do what you want just because you were one of the first in the Glade, Amelia," Gally told her. She grabbed on to his shirt. "I am sorry, Gally."
"Sorry isn't going to cut it."
"What do you want me to do then?" Amelia asked. Gally had never been so mad that she didn't know what to do.
Gally looked at the girl. After he saw her, he felt happy, angry and upset at himself. He should've been there to protect her. Why had it been Minho and Thomas? He should've been there for her.
He looked into her eyes and his walls started to crumble. He hated seeing her sad eyes but he was mad at himself.
Gally exhales a breath and walked over to the Council Hall where the meeting is being held.
Amelia ran her hand through her hair in frustration. She turned to see Thomas standing a few feet away from her.
"You heard everything?"
"Uh, yeah. Sorry for eavesdropping"
"It's okay. He's right though. I always think about others and never myself."
"What does he expect? It's in your nature to care about others," Thomas said walking over to her. "He's just being a dick. Newt isn't even mad."
Amelia chuckled, "Trust me, Newt is mad. He just isn't showing it like Gally is."
Thomas bumped his shoulder with hers and she looked up at him.
"It's okay. He'll get over it, eventually."
Gally caught the exchange between the two and he balled his hands into fists.
The two started making their way over to the Council Hall. Gally entered before most of the Gladers.
Amelia and Thomas entered and the two stood at the side. When everyone was seated Gally decided to speak up, greeting everyone.
"Things are changing," he began. "There's no denying that. First, Ben gets stung in broad daylight. And then Alby. And now our Greenie, here, has taken it upon himself. . .to go into the maze. Which is a clear violation of our rules here," Gally said pointing to Thomas.
"Yeah. . .but he saved Alby's life, and Lia's." Fry pan said making sure to add in Amelia's name.
"Did he? For 3 years, we have coexisted with these things. And now, you've killed one of them. Who knows what that could mean for us," Gally said.
"What do you suggest we do?" Newt asked.
"He has to be punished," Gally said.
"Then you need to punish me as well. I broke the rules as well," Amelia said before she added, "And besides he saved my life."
"We'll deal with you later,"Gally said looking at Amelia. The girl raised a brow as she stared at Gally. What did he mean by that?
"What are you going to do? Amelia had been here longer than anyone. She has more say than you do. She has every right to-" Thomas said as Newt gave the boy a look that said he was just making it worse.
"Thomas," Amelia interrupted him and he looked at her. Amelia looked at Gally but he was glaring at Thomas.
"Come on. He killed a Griever!" Chuck spoke up.
Newt looked over at Minho. "Yo,Minho. You were there with him. What do you think?" Newt asked the runner.
Minho looked at Amelia and she tilted her head. What would he say?
"I think. . .in all the time we've been here. . .no one has ever killed a Griever before. When I turned tail and ran. . .his dumb shank stayed behind to help Alby and Lia," Minho said causing the brunette girl to smile.
"Look, I don't know if he's brave or stupid. But whatever it is, we need more of it. I say we make him a runner," Minho said and Amelia smiled. It seemed that he finally saw the potential Thomas had.
"A runner? What? Minho, let's not jump the gun, here," Fry pan said.
"Thomas! Thomas! Thomas!" Chunk chanted while the Gladers talked over each other disagreeing with Minho.
"If you want to throw the newbie a parade, that's fine. Go ahead. But if there is one thing I know about the maze... it is that you do not-" Gally said and just then a familiar siren cut him off.
Everyone paused and they immediately ran out of the hut. That sound was all too familiar sound. It was the box.
"I know that sound," Thomas said.
"The Box. It's coming back up," Chuck said as they ran to the nox.
"It shouldn't be," Minho exclaimed and ran past them. It had only been a few days since Thomas arrived. The box should be returning next month. Why was it coming up now?
"The boys surrounded the box in wonder, all their heads looking inside just as the doors were opened by Gally and Newt. Amelia and Thomas slide their way through to get to the front.
"Newt, what do you see?" Frypan asked him.
Newt looked up and he called out, "Lia, you better get down here." She looked at the boys in hesitation. She looked at Gally who seemed to look just as hesitant as she did. Amelia crocued before she jumped down into the box.
Her eyes were wide as she took in the figure that laid on the metal ground.
"It's a girl."
Amelia didn't know why but as she took in the girl's face she suddenly had a strange feeling. The girl didn't look to be in the best condition. She looked pale. Her black hair was sprawled out under her head.
"I think she's dead," Newt told everyone.
"What's in her hand?" Gally asked, pointing towards the girl's closed fist. Amelia only watched as Newt bent down to retrieve a folded note in her hand.
"She's the last one. . .ever," He read aloud, looking up in questioningly. "What the hell does that mean?"
Amelia crouched down beside the girl to check if the girl was alive or not. She was pale but she did seem to have live in her. The boys were talking and asking what the note meant but Amelia ignored them. She moved closer staring at the girl. The girl felt familiar to Amelia but she also didn't.
The girl jolted awake, panting for air causing Amelia to sit back and everyone to jump back.
"Amelia!" The girl gasped, her darker blue eyes staring into the brunette's eyes. Amelia felt shivers run over her body as she stared at the familiar distinctive blue eyes. This girl knew her name. How?
"Thomas!" She gasped out, looking at the brunette above them. She slowly started to fall unconscious again, the girl's eyes were now screwed shut again. Amelia looked up to Thomas confused by how the girl knew both her and Thomas' names. She turned back to the girl and stared at her in complete confusion.
The boys were silent as they stared at Thomas and Amia.
"You still think I'm overreacting." Gally quipped.
