ch 8
Amelia walked down a passageway as she led the way for the boys. Thomas and Minho were carrying Alby's unconscious body. They were passing through a couple pathways. It was harder to navigate through the maze during the night than she had originally thought. Some parts of the maze were already dark during the day and with little to no light they couldn't see at all. The moon wasn't helping them at all. Amelia looked up at the walls to figure out where they were.
Thomas and Minho stopped to rest. The two of them were exhausted carrying around Alby. They couldn't stop for too long. They didn't know when the grievers would suddenly appear. Thomas sat Alby down on the side of a wall.
“This isn't going to work,” Minho said. Amelia stood with her hands on her hips, tired from the day.
The three of them heard a loud screech from a distance and the three all turned their heads to where it came from. Amelia's eyes were wide and she looked over at Minho. He had now started to panic. “We gotta go.”
“We can't leave Alby, Minho.”
“We gotta do something. We gotta hide him,” Thomas protested referring to Alby. Amelia didn't want to panic as well. Someone had to stay calm and think of what they should do.
“Where?” Minho gritted his teeth.
“I don't know. Are you telling me there's not a single place we could take him?” Minho snapped in frustration and grabbed on to Thomas' collar. He suddenly shoved the boy back onto the wall next to Alby and stared him down.
“Minho!” Amelia whispered. She had to keep her voice down. She didn't want to alert the grievers of their whereabouts.
“Listen to me, shuck-face, all right. Take a look around. There's nowhere to go!” Mimho seethed, gripping onto Thomas's shirt tighter. “You don't get it. We're already dead.”
Amelia having had enough, walked over and pulled Minho off of Thomas. “Minho, calm down,” Amelia said, pushing him away from the boy. Thomas didn't have any knowledge of the maze. They're the only ones who knows the maze. It's their job to now ensure that Thomas and Alby are safe.
The screeching noises continued only making Amelia feel uneasy. Amelia's gaze moved to the thick ivy vines. She was able to hide from the grievers the other day. They could hide Alby inside them.
“Minho,” Amelia called out to her friend. The runner looked at her and she gestured to the vines. The two shared a glance, nodding at each other in understanding.
“Two. . .Three. . .” Thomas counted, grunting along with Amelia and Minho as they pulled up Alby's body tied to the vines. They kept pulling and pulling on the rope until they couldn't anymore.
They heard a sound come from the corner, causing Minho to peak over to see a griever come from a sector shifting not too far from them. “We got to go,” He panicked. “We got to go.”
“I can't.”
“Lia, please,” he begged. “If you don't survive Newt and Gally will kill me.”
He didn't want to leave his best friend.
“No, no, just a little more and we'll tie it off. Stay with me,” Thomas said as he and Amelia held on to the rope.
“Minho,” Amelia pleaded. She was scared too but she had to ensure that Alby was safe. He helped them pull Alby a little more until he was well hidden between the vines.
Minho noticed that the griever was starting to get closer to them. Minho felt his blood run cold and he couldn't wait any longer. “I'm sorry, Greenie”
“What?”
Amelia felt Minho grip onto her arm and she was pulled back which caused her to let go of the rope leaving Thomas to carry all of Alby's weight. The action made Thomas get pulled back over to the wall and Alby's body to drop a few inches down.
“Minho!”
“I'm not leaving Alby, Minho.” Lia pulled herself away from Minho, sprinting towards Thomas to help him. Minho groaned to himself and ran off leaving them.
Amelia helped Thomas tie the rope with a branch connected to the ground. The clicking and thumping sounds coming from the griever resonated louder. It was getting closer to them. Amelia looked over to the thick layer of vines. They could hide behind it and conceal themselves from the griever.
Amelia grabbed Thomas' arm and dragged him with her to hide beneath the vines.
Amelia bit her lip to not make any sound. She was scared for her life. Her eyes widen when the metal leg of the griever came to view in front of her and Thomas. Thomas' hand flew to his mouth as he tried to not make any noise.
Amelia heard the low growls come from the griever along with the clicking and clanking of its legs. She closed her eyes to try and not panic. She had to stay calm and wait for the griever to pass.
The griever passed them and they waited until it was out of sight before they came out from their hiding spot. Thomas helped the girl up and he noticed her trembling hands. “Hey.” Amelia looked up at the boy. “It's gonna be okay. We'll be okay.”
Amelia nodded her head even though she was beyond terrified. Thomas seemed more calm than she had expected him to be. She felt grateful to him for being with her at that moment.
“We need to go. We can't stay here,” Thomas said as he looked around. He didn't know the maze well so he didn't know where they could go.
Amelia looked up to where Alby was. He was okay.
Thomas started to panic when he heard the sounds of thumping again. He grabbed Amelia by the arm, pulling her to the side of the wall, hiding from the griever once again until the sounds receded.
Once the griever was gone, Amelia looked around. They can survive the night if they hide well. The two just needed to find the perfect spot for them to hide.
Amelia turned to see Thomas now gone. She frowned and rounded the corner and she finally found him but she froze once she saw the griever above him.
Her eyes stayed on the griever. “Thomas,” she called out in a low shaky voice as her eyes stayed on the griever. “Run, now. Now!”
Thomas looked up at where Amelia's eyes were and his eyes widened when he saw the griever. He screamed and Amelia quickly grabbed a hold of his arm and pulled him out of the corner. The griever screeched as it ran, following after them.
It bounced off walls as it began to screech louder after them. They ran through different paths to lose it but it stayed behind them. They couldn't lose the griever. It had gotten even faster the more they ran.
The two ran through a few corners only to find a wall. Amelia panted, looking around. It was a dead end. They had reached a dead end.
Thomas tugged at her shirt and motioned to the ivy vines. Amelia looked up and she looked down the passageway. They had to climb before the griever reaches them.
The two immediately gripped on to the ivy vines and started to climb up. The griever appeared with a loud screech and ran toward them.
The two made it to the other side on time but the griever was right behind them. They continued to run over the concrete floors and through the rubble as they tried to find a new path.
They stopped by the edge of the wall they stood on. There was no other routes to take. Thomas noticed the other wall a few feet away from them filled with thick vines.
“Amelia, there! We can jump!” he said and he pointed to the vines. Amelia's eyes were wide as she looked at the wall. Would they be able to make it if they jumped?
Thomas looked back and he saw the incoming griever. “We have to go! Now!” He grabbed her hand and the two jumped down. They separated when they jumped into the vines. She had fell just a few feet away under Thomas. Amelia had been lucky to get a good grip on the vines otherwise she would've fell to the ground.
She looked up and her eyes widened when she saw the griever junp into the vines as well. “Thomas!” She yelled. It landed over Thomas and the boy struggled underneath it as he tried to keep his grip on the vines. Amelia jumped down the vines and landed on her feet. She ran to the side as she called out to Thomas. She looked around for something to throw at the griever. She picked up a rock and threw it. She missed it but luckily Thomas managed to escape the griever and he had avoided being stung by griever and left it to be tangled on the vines.
He ran over to her after he landed on the ground. “Let's go,” He panted. Amelia looked at the creature struggle before they ran. They ran around another corner but the griever popped out once more in front of them.
Amelia slowly stepped in front of Thomas as they backed up and it stalked towards her. She stared at the creature. A red beam appeared from the griever and it suddenly scanned her eyes. It suddenly stopped which made the two frown.
Why did it suddenly stop?
Amelia furrowed eyebrows and she turned to Thomas.
“Shutdown.”
The griever fell down to the ground. The two looked at each other confused by what just happened. “What's just happened? Has that ever happened?” Thomas whispered.
“I don't know. This is the first time I'm seeing this,” Amelia said. “Why did it suddenly shutdown? What's going on? What did you do?”
“You think I know?” she whisper-yelled. “We need to leave now.” Amelia looked to the other side to see if they can go around the griever and just when she stepped away from Thomas they both heard a low growl. Amelia looked to see another griever.
Amelia's eyes were wide. They had thought they were in the clear. “What did you do with that one? Can you do it with this one?” Thomas asked the girl as the griever ran to them. Amelia shook her head, “There's no time to figure that out. Run!”
The two ran around the corner and the griever followed after them. At the end of the corner, a hand grabbed onto their shoulders.
“Shit!” Lia yelped in surprise at the sight of Minho.
“Holy shit.”
“You guys are crazy sons of bitches.” Minho pulled them over towards a different sector and ran through a path. He stopped for a moment, checking the walls. It was changing.
“Okay, it's changing. Come on!”
They ran faster and followed Minho towards the far end corner. “This section's closing. Come on! We can loose it down here!” Minho told them.
Amelia and Minho ran towards the other end, but Thomas stayed back. Amelia was almost half way there when she noticed that Thomas wasn't following them. He was still at the other end. She halted in the middle of the passageway. “Thomas, what are you doing?”
“Thomas! Lia! What're you waiting for? Get out of there!” Minho yelled after them from the other end of the passageway.
Amelia looked over to Minho and Thomas before she ran over to where Thomas was. “Lia, what are you doing?”
Thomas waited until the griever came into sight. The sector wallks started to close and she looked up. The girl looked over at Thomas and she sighed. She finally caught on to what he was up. “You're crazy.”
Thomas sent her a quick smile before turning back towards the griever, edging it on. “Come on!” Thomas yelled. Amelia looked at the distance between the griever and them before she looked down the passageway. They had to be right on time otherwise it wouldn't work.
Amelia tugged on Thomas' arm and she counted.
One.
Two.
Three.
The two sprinted through the closing doors with Amelia ahead. They kept running from the creature as it snarled and hissed after them. Minho kept yelling after them as they squeezed their way through the concrete. Amelia made it out before Thomas. He was still a few feet away.
“Don't look back,” Minho yelled at him.
“Come on, Thomas!”
He managed to get out of the walls, crushing the griever inside. The boy panted, falling to the ground. He couldn't believe he just did that.
Amelia chuckled as she looked at the crushed griever. They survived that one.
She looked at Thomas and slapped the back of the boy's head. “You're freaking insane, you know that, right?”
“I could say the same about you,” he retorted back and she shook her head. She couldn't believed what just happened. They just killed a griever. Not counting the one that shut down in front of them.
Her gaze moved to her neck and she smiled when she felt her necklace still on her. She had moved a lot, she was afraid she'd have lost it somewhere.
Thomas furrowed his brows as he stared at the necklace around the girl's neck. Why does it feel like he has seen that before?
“You're both fucking reckless,” Minho mumbled under his breath. Amelia turned to Minho and she finally recalled that he had abandoned them.
She looked at the boy before she punched him injuring her fist but he deserved that.
“That's for leaving us,” Amelia said. Minho winced and he nodded. “I deserved that.”
Amelia sighed and she pulled in into a hug.
“I'm happy you're okay, though, you shank.”
Thomas looked at the two with a frown. Amelia pulled away from the boy and she walked over to Thomas to help him up, “Get up. We still have a few hours before sunrise. We have to survive until then.”
