ch 4

The whole two hours Newt and Gally stayed at Amelia's side when Clint examined her ankle. Luckily she hadn't broken it, just twisted it. She did need to rest and stay off it for a day. It would be better after but she still needed to take it easy. Amelia knew she wouldn't be able to rest for a day since there was a lot that still needed to be done. The supplies was late so she needed to work these few days while she's in the maze.

Amelia had not told any of them of the two grievers she had encountered. She was afraid if she told them they wouldn't allow her to go out again but if she does not tell them than some of the other runners may encounter them during the day and they would not be able to avoid them.

It would be better to just tell Minho of it so he informs the other runners to be cautious and to stay together. She didn't want to spread panic among the gladers.

“You really need to be more careful,” Minho told Amelia when she sat down beside him. They were having a celebration tonight. It was something they held once a month to motivate the other Gladers. They had figured it may help them a lot.

“I was careful.”

“If you had been a few minutes late you would've spend the night in the maze,” Ben said to Amelia. He sat across from her as he ate his food. “Lucky me, huh.”

“Those two would've had my neck,” Minho said as he pointed to Gally who was making his drinks while Newt helped with the gathering wood for the bonfire.

Amelia smiled at the two. She had timed herself well so she knew when it was gonna close. She wouldn't have been late even if she strolled. “But if that were to ever happen I'm sure I'd be able to survive a night in the maze,” Amelia joked. Her worst fear was being stuck in the maze alone with the grievers.

Minho rolled his eyes, “You are tough, Lia but not even you would be able to survive in there.”

Minho was right. No one has ever survived a night in the maze and lived to tell about it.

Amelia's eyes fell on the greenbean who sat alone away from everyone. She had not talked to him since she had returned but she was sure Alby had already filled him in on everything.
“Alby, the greenie, how is he?” Amelia called out to the man who was a few feet away from her. Alby looked over to the greenie and he sighed.

“I have not figured him out yet but he will be a handful,” Alby said. “Hopefully, you'll be able to handle this one.”

“The stubborn ones. Gally loves them,” Amelia said. He loved breaking the stubborn Gladers and maybe that was the reason why so many feared him. There was nothing scary about Gally, he was just a big softie pretending to be tough. He had arrived a few months after her so he had been here before most of the boys. The boys did have a lot of respect for him.

“He's surely going to enjoy breaking this one,” Minho mumbled.

“Light em up.” Alby said.

The fire lit up and the boys cheered loudly. Newt made his way over to the greenbean who sat away from the bonfire. Newt had figured he felt left out after today.

Newt stopped beside the greenie. “Hell of a first day, Greenie. Here. Put some hair on your chest,” Newt said as he handed him Gally's famous drink. The drink was strong and tasted weird and Amelia still refused to drink it but the boys loved it.

“Oh, Oh, my God! What is that?” the boy asked after he spat the drink out. He did not expect it to taste like that.

Newt chuckled. “I don't even know. It's Gally's recipe. It's a trade secret,” Newt said and he took a sip of his drink. The boy looked over to Gally who was wrestling with the boys.

“Yeah, well, he's still an asshole,” he said.

“He saved your life today. Trust me. The maze is a dangerous place,” Newt said to the boy.

“We're trapped here, aren't we?” he asked Newt. He didn't want to hear his answer, afraid that it would be yes.

Newt looked at the greenie. “For the moment. But. . .you see those guys?
There, by the fire?” Newt pointed to Minho and the other runners. “Those are the runners. That guy in the middle there, that's Minho. He's the Keeper of the Runners. Every morning, when those doors open, they run the maze... mapping it, memorizing it, trying to find a way out.” Newt said just when Amelia stopped at Minho's side.

“And the girl? Is she a runner too?”

Newt smiled, “Yes. She was actually the first one. She was brave enough to go outside these walls when no one else wanted tl. She and Minho are basically in charge of runners but she helps out wherever she can.”

“She's a runner,” he said as he stared at her. She was the only girl here and she looked small but he guessed that she had to be fast if she was a runner. His eyes stayed on her as she pushed her hair into a bun on top of her head. She was beautiful as well.

Newt noticed the greenie's stare and he slapped the back of the boy's head. “Do not stare at her. She's off limits.”

“I wasn't staring,” he rubbed the back of his head offended. He looked at Newt before he looked over at Amelia. “Do you like her? Is she your girlfriend?”
Newt decided not to answer since it would be more complicated if he explained to him what was going on with him, Amelia and Gally.

The greenie looked over to the girl to see her now beside Gally. The way Gally was staring down at her made him frown. “Wait, is she Gally's girlfriend? Is she that asshole's girlfriend?” he asked with disbelief. He turned to Newt who had a small smile.

“It is much more complicated than that.”

It wasn't complicated to Newt but it would be if he had to explain it. He decided to let it rest and go back to the topic they had previously been on.

“The runners how long had they been looking for a way out?” the greenie asked.

“Three years.”

The two turned to the voice. Amelia smiled at the two before she joined them. “We had been looking for three years,” she said. “I'm Amelia by the way but everyone calls me Lia.”

The boy watched as she smiled at Newt. “And you haven't found anything?” he asked. Three years was a long time to still be looking.

“It's a lot easier said than done,” Amelia said.

“Listen. Hear that? It's the maze, changing. It changes every night,” Newt said as they listened to the maze changing. Every night the maze changed and every night the runners have to keep track of it. It had a pattern that Minho and Amelia had to keep track of.

“How is that even possible?”

“You can ask the people who put us in here, if you ever meet the bastards,” Newt said as Amelia stared at the new boy, observing him. She had now finally been able to take a good look at him. He looked a bit rigged — most of them do when they first arrive.
He was handsome even with all the dirty on his face.

Where would be the perfect place for him to be? The medjacks, the builders or the Cooks?

“Why are you looking at me like that?” the greenie asked, with a frown. “I am trying to figure out where to put you.”

“Lia!”

All three looked up to see Frypan with a distressed look on his face. “A little help, please!” the boy yelled. She smiled already knowing they burned the beans. It had been the first time they tried to bake the beans so there will be some trouble.
“I will be right back. It seemed the Cooks need my help.”

She jumped up and tried to run to help the boys. “Don't run! Be careful with your ankle, Lia!” Newt yelled out after her. The girl gave him a small smile as she limped. She joined Frypan just to see that they had actually burned the beans. “Frypan! Why?”

“You were supposed to help us. It was your idea to try this,” Andy said to the girl. She took out the burned patch of burned beans. “Yeah but I thought you guys had this covered!”

“How about we just put it in a pot and cook it with water? Let's try and make some soup with it?” Frypan suggested. “And how long is that going to take?”

“Not long.”

“Okay then.”

Newt waited until Amelia was busy before he lowered his voice to talk to the greenie. “Listen, the truth is. . .the runners are the only ones who really know what's out there. They are the strongest and the fastest of us all. And it's a good thing, too. . .because if they don't make it back before those doors close. . .then they are stuck out there for the night. And no one has ever survived a night in the maze,” Newt said.

“What happens to them?”

“Well, we call them Grievers. Of course, no one's ever seen one and lived to tell about it. But they're out there. Right, that's enough questions for one night. Come on. You're supposed to be the guest of honor,” Newt said and he stood up.

“Oh, no.”

“No! No, come on. Let me show you around. Come on,” Newt said and he stood up. He walked over to the fire.

The two passed the gladers who were playing around. “Whoa!”

Newt pointed to the Cooks. “You know those people who are with Amelia are the Cooks. They are in charge of our meals,” Newt said, the two watching as they throw water into the pot. Did any of them actually know how to cook?

They passed the few gladers who looked bigger than size compared to others. One of the stood tall amongst them all. “There we got the builders. They're very good with their hands...but not a lot going on upstairs.”

He frowned but followed after Newt to a group of boys. “And then we got Winston. . .he's the Keeper of the Slicers. And we got two med-jacks, Clint and Jeff.” Newt said.

“Hey, what's up?”

“Yo, Newt.”

“They spend most of their time bandaging up the slicers,” Newt said and Winston laughed. “Yeah.”

“Where do you think Lia would put him?” Jeff asked Newt. Amelia was the person who assigned them their work. She was very observant and just by observing them she could tell where they'd be useful in.

“Will he join the Cooks or the Slicers?” Clint asked. “If he wants to join the medjacks, I'm cool with it. We do need more hands, don't we Jeff?”

“Yes, we do.”

The greenie turned to Newt. “What if I want to be a runner?” the greenie asked and the boys scoff. No one had ever willingly offered to be a runner. No one has ever wanted to be one.

“Have you listened to a word I've just said? No one wants to be a runner. And, besides, you gotta get chosen,” Newt said to the boy.

“Chosen by who? Amelia?” the greenie asked just as the gladers cheered and someone got pushed into them, more specifically into the greenie.

“Whoa!”

Gally smirked when he saw the greenie. “What do you say, Greenie? Wanna see what you're made of?” Gally asked and Newt sighed as the gladers all cheered. The boy looked around before he walked into the ring.
Amelia who finished up with the Cooks walked over to Newt as the Gladers kept on chanting, “Greenie! Greenie! Greenie!”

“Looks like he already started,” Newt said to Amelia, referring to Gally. He always taunted the stubborn ones. “Do you think this one will be able to hold out against Gally?”

Amelia stared at the boy. Compared to Gally he was smaller but she wouldn't bet against him yet. “Maybe. Let us see.”

“Okay. All right. The rules are simple, Greenie. I try to push you out of the circle. . . you try to last more than five seconds,” Gally said.

“Take it easy on the Greenie, Gally!” Andy yelled out from the side.

"Ready?” Gally said. The greenie immediately got pushed to the ground by Gally which made him angry. Gally had a bigger build so he used more of his power.

“Get up. Boy.”

“Come on, Greenie. We're not done yet,” Gally taunted.

“Stop calling me that!” the boy said as he stood up. It only made Gally smirk. He had fun taunting the boy.
“What do you wanna be called? Shank? What do you think, boys? Does he look like a Shank?” Gally asked the gladers and some cheered. They seemed to be enjoying this a lot.

“Whoa! Come on!”

Gally turned to the greenie. “You know what? I think I've settled on Shank.” Gally said.

The greenie ran to Gally and tried to push him to the ground but he was unsuccessful. He had still put up a fight but Gally pushed him to the ground again.
“There you go, Greenie! Not bad for a Greenie, huh?” Gally said. He looked at the boy on the ground.

Amelia looked at the boy on the ground. “Do you think he's had enough?” she asked Newt.

“Thomas.”

“Thomas,” he scurried up from the ground. “I remember my name. I'm Thomas Thomas!” Thomas said genuinely happy that he had now remembered his name.

“Welcome home, Thomas!” Alby cheered and the boys foowed.

Gally walked over to the boy. “Good job... Thomas,” Gally said just when they heard a loud screech from the maze which surprised Thomas. “What the hell was that?”

“That, my friend, was a Griever. Don't worry, you're safe here with us. Nothing gets through those walls.” Gally said to him. Amelia looked over at Alby and she nodded. It's better for them to tuck in for the night.

“All right, guys, Let's tuck it in for the night. Come on. It was a good night,” Alby said, as he clapped his hands together. “Good job, man. You're safe here with us,” Alby said to Thomas but for some reason he didn't believe it.
