ch 15

Some of the boys waited by the doors when the trio made it back. They had heard and felt the commotion when Sector Seven was closing. Amelia had not realized how looud it actually was that it would worry the boys.
"What the hell's going on out there?" the blonde boy asked as soon as they got back.

"What the hell you done now, Thomas?" Gally approached them and Amelia rolled her eyes ignoring him. Why did he believe it was Thomas' doing?

"We found something, a new passage," Thomas answered Newt since he had been eager to know.

"We think it could be a way out," Amelia added. The girl for omce was full of hope. They now finally had a shot of getting out of the maze. They'd be able to finally leave this place for good.

"Really?"

"It's true," Minho confirmed, still slightly out of breath from running. "We opened a door, something I'd never seen before. I think it must be where the Grievers go during the day."

"Wait! Whoa, whoa, whoa. . ." Chuck spoke up, moving to be between them in disbelief. "You're saying you found the Grievers's home and you want us to go in?"

"Their way in could be our way out, Chuck," Thomas told him. Amelia understood his hesitation. Even though he had never seen a griever he had every right to be afraid.

"Yeah, or  there could be a dozen Grievers on the other side," Gally exclaimed from behind them. Amelia rolled her eyes as she bit her lip in annoyance. She had thought that maybe he would lay off for a bit. This was their one and only shot of leaving the maze.

"The truth is, Thomas doesn't know what he has done, as usual," Gally added.

Thomas turned to face the Builder finally having had enough of Gally's pessimism towards him. "Yeah, at least I did something, Gally," he said. "I mean, what have you done? Aside from hide behind these walls all the time?"

"Let me tell you something, Greenie," Gally started, poking his fingers on the shorter boys chest. "You've been here three days, all right? I've been here three years!"
They were all watching the argument between the two go down.

They had been here three years and nothing had chance.

"What does that tell you? Maybe you should start doing things a little differently," Thomas told him. Amelia could see how furious Gally was.

"Maybe you should be in charge, what about that?" Gally retorted.

Amelia having had enough of the two decided to speak up, "Shut the hell up?!"
Everyone's attention turned to her as she glared at Gally. He wasn't helping at all by arguing with Thomas. They went out risking their lives to find something and they finally did.

Gally glared back at the girl but she was not backing down. "Arguing isn't going to help us in any way. We went out risking our lives to find something and we finally did after three whole years Gally," Amelia said before she added, "and it's all thanks to Thomas."

Gally rolled his eyes to speak up but she interrupted him, "Don't speak while I'm still speaking. I've been in this place longer than you, Gally. You may think you have authority because Alby isn't here but you don't. While I'm still breathing I have more authority over you."

Gally glared as they all stared at the girl. This had been the first time she had ever acted with authority. Whe had always oeft it to Alby and Newt.
"So, stop bitching and let us do our job. We're going to find a way out of this place whether you like it or not!"

Gally scoffed as he stared at the girl. "Is that how it is now?" he asked. "Now you want to act like a leader when all you've been doing is following around Thomas like a lost little puppy. Maybe you should stop bitching around, Amelia."

"Hey!" Minho stepped forward in front of Amelia while Newt moved I'm front of Gally to glare at him. "Back off, Gally," Newt ordered, locking his jaw as he stood in front of the six foot tall Builder.

"Watch it," Minho warned as he stayed in front of Amelia. Amelia looked down trying to not cry out in frustration. She blinked her tears away and exhaled. Her gaze moved to the side and she saw Teresa making her way to them.

Teresa made eye contact with the girl and Amelia walked over to her without the boys noticing since they were still arguing. "Alby, he's awake." Amelia smiled at the girl before she ran to the med-jacks hut.

Teresa looked at the boys and she called out to them but they didn't hear her. "Guys. Hey!" They continued to ignore her until she yelled for them once more.

"Hey, it's Alby!" Teresa called out, catching everyone's attention. "He's awake."

Newt looked back to where Amelia was but she was gone. Teresa gestured to where the girl ran off to. "She already left."
Theyball followed the dark haired girl to the med-jack's hut.
Amelia was already inside when Minho, Newt, Gally and Frypan came in. She was staring at Alby whose back was to them. Amelia didn't know if the serum worked so she stayed a few feet away from him.

"Has he said anything?" Minho asked Teresa and she shook her head. "No."

"Alby. . ." Newt stepped forward to sit beside him. Amelia stared at the back of her best friend before she neared him. She kneeled down at his side.

"Alby, are you all right?" Amelia asked and she took in his tear stained face. Thomas kneeled in front of him, right beside the brunette girl.

"Hey, Alby," he greeted him, softly. "Alby, we might have just found a way out of the maze."

"You hear me? We could be getting out of here," he added but Alby wasn't looking at either of them.

"We can't," Alby finally spoke up, his voice cracking. Her chest clenched at the way he looked. She had only seen him this distraught once. She hated seeing him like this. "We can't leave. They won't let us."

"What are you talking about?" Thomas asked, confusion written all over his features. Amelia was confused by what he meant.

Amelia reached to touch Alby's arm but he pulled away which caused her chest to hurt. He was her best friend, the person she had always went to. Had she done something to make him indifferent towards her?
She gulped down the lump in her throat and decided to ignore it. "Who won't let us leave, Alby?" she asked him.

"I remember."

Thomas gulped, "What do you remember?"

"You." Alby turned to Thomas, sadly. He stared for a moment before turning to the girl in front of him. "And you, Lia."

Newt and Gally glanced at each other wondering what he meant by that.

"You were always their favorite, Thomas," the dark skinned boy whispered, his voice shaking. His gaze moved to Amelia and a tear rolled down his cheek. "You—"

There was shouting coming from outside catching everyone's attention. Amelia stared at Alby as he looked at her with sad eyes. What did she do?

"Why did you do it, Lia?" he asked the brunette. "You created them. They were your creations. . .those things out there."

Amelia frowned at the boy as he motioned to outside. What was he talking about? Did he mean the griever? Was she responsible for creating the griever?

"Why did you do this? Why did you come here?" he asked as he looked at Thomas. Amelia didn't know what to say. She had been here for three years so she did not know what to think. Thomas and Amelia were both confused at the information Alby was throwing their way. They wished they knew what he was talking about but neither of them remembered anything.

The shouting from outside became louder, gaining everyone's attention. Everyone ran outside while Amelia stayed at Alby's side. Amelia gulped as she stared at her friend. She didn't know of she should comfort him, if he'd let her or if she had the right to do so.

She stood up before she ran out of the hut, following the others.
The gladers were rampaging around the glade, holding torches to light the way through the dark. Everyone was panicking over something and they had no idea what it was.

Thomas saw Winston pass by and called for his attention. "Winston, what's going on?" Thomas asked.

"It's the doors. They aren't closing," he told him, pointing to the Maze doors that were still wide open.

Amelia looked at Thomas and the two ran towards the entrance of the maze. The doors should have already closed. Why wasn't it closed?
Amelia had a bad feeling about this. She didn't like this at all.

Newt stopped beside the girl and she felt his hand on her back.

A loud boom had erupted, causing everyone to groan at the pain in their ears. Everyone turned their heads towards the source, hearing birds squawking in the distance. One side of the Maze walls had began to open to reveal another door.

They didn't know there were another door.

Another side of the walls had opened as well as another. In total there were now four doors open leading in to the maze.

"This isn't good."

Everyone had began to panic. All four doors were now open which meant they were not safe from the grievers at all. Thomas turned to the youngest Glader.
"Chuck, go to the Council Hall and start barricading the doors."

Chuck nodded, following his order as Newt turned to Winston. "Winston, you go with him."

Gally turned to the other boys and began barking orders. "Get the others. Tell them to go to the forest. Go hide, now!"

"Minho, I want you to grab every weapon you can find. I'll meet you at Council Hall," Thomas told Minho who nodded in understanding. Amelia grabbed Newt's arm before he could leave. "Please be safe," she told him. The blonde boy nodded and he ran after Minho and Frypan.

"You guys as well!" Amelia called after the others. They gave her a thumbs up and she let out a breath.

"Lia, Teresa, we're gonna go get Alby, all right?" Thomas told the two girls.

"Lia, you're coming with me," Gally said and she turned her head to the sound of screams. On the east side of the glade she saw gladers running away from the doors. Amelia were all unsure why they were running until she heard the familiar whirring and clicking sounds. She knew that sounds all too well.

A Griever's leg popped out from the corner of the end of the maze causing everyone to panic even more. "All right, everybody hide!" Thomas yelled out.

Amelia's eyes were wide as she stared at the grievers. They were here.
Thomas grabbed the girl's arm and they ran away with Teresa leading the way. Amelia looked back at Gally who was running the other way. "Lia!" Gally yelled out.

She hoped he stayed safe. He had to stay alive. Teresa lead them to a part of the gardens where tall weeds and grass with some of the other gladers.

They kept silent, kneeling down as to not be seen by any of the grievers. Amelia's heart was pounding in her chest as she tried to stay quiet. They had been in a similar situation before but unlike before she didn't know if they'd go unnoticed.

A loud rustle came from behind them along with a scream causing all of them to turn their heads around. Amelia looked to the right when she saw Zart. She had been grateful he was safe. A metal claw  grabbed onto which caused the girl to let out a loud scream.

"Zart!" she tried to grab a hold of him to pull him back but he had already been pulled away. Teresa pulled the girl back by her arms.

She knew she had alerted the grievers of their location. More grievers could be heard coming their way. They had to leave before the grievers grabbed them. Amelia and Teresa began running towards the homestead, with Thomas following them.

"Go! Get to the village!" Thomas screamed.

Amelia ran into Jeff and Clint who were carrying Alby. She was relieved he was at least safe. "Alby!"

"Are you okay?" she asked.

"What's going on?"

"They're here," Thomas told him and Alby's expression along with the two Med-jacks'  changed.

"Grievers?" Jeff asked them just when one of the gladers was taken by another griever not too far from them making them all move back.

"Thomas, what do we do?"
Amelia grabbed on to Teresa's hand to push her back as well. They heard a lot of scream of panic and agony as the gladers ran back and forth trying to get away from the grievers. It was horrible.

"Let's head to the council hall."

They began running towards the north eastern part of the glade where the council hall was located. They ran but they were quickly stopped when an object fell in front of them. A griever appeared in front od them and growled. It pointed it's stinger at them but before it could do anything the same red beam the other griever used scanned Amelia. Shortly after it fell to the ground and shut down in front of them.

"What just happened?" Clint asked.

Thomas looked at Amelia and he asked, "It happened again. What did you do?"

"I don't know."

"We don't have time to figure that out. Let's go!" Teresa said pulling on the girl's arm. Just as they ran a griever bursted through a hut causing them to stop again. Teresa let go of Amelia's hand before she grabbed a lit mason jar and threw it at the griever. It engulfed in flames and whirred in pain. It gave the gladers time to pass it. "Go, go, go, go!"

They sprinted toward the Council Hall. Grievers were following them, taking a few gladers. She couldn't even mourn for anyone because they had been no time. They had to survive first.
"Keep moving!"

Alby fell down making them turn back to help him up. A griever came shrieking on front of them ready to attack.
"Get behind me!" Thomas told them.

"Come on!" Thomas egged it on and just in time a few spears came flying towards the creature to impale it.
The girl let out a sigh of relief when she saw Newt, Minho, and Frypan.

"Let's go!" They all ran to the Council Hall.

"Over here!" Chuck yelled out to them. They all ran inside and immediately closed and barricaded the doors. The all stood in the middle of the hut.

"Lia!" Minho threw one knife to Amelia and she caught it.

The soft whirring sound of the grievers outside was the only sounds that could be heard with the few screams of the gladers. The griever began poking through the wooden walls in certain parts causing the gladers inside to feel uneasy.

"Stay back, guys," Newt instructed.

They maneuvered around the hall, getting away from where the griever was poking. Their eyes stayed on the griever. The hall was not big so they did not have enough room to move around in the middle. They had to be careful.

The whirring sound suddenly stopped, for a moment and the griever's tail came crashing through the roof. Its metal claw breaking the branch that held the ceiling together. The wooden parts came crashing over them as they ducked, dust filling the area.

Amelia pushed the wood off her as Newt asked, "Is everyone all right?"

"Help!" someone yelled out. Newt and Thomas grabbed his hands but he gets pulled away by a Griever.

"Watch out!"
The griever grabbed a hold of Chuck's leg and Amelia immediately ran over. Thomas was quick to grab on to the boy's hand. "Help!"

"Grab him! Pull him back!"

"Help!"

Amelia grabbed on to Chuck's other hand. She couldn't lose him.
"Chuck, don't let go!" Thomas told him.

"No shit!" Chuck retorted.

"Pull! Don't let him go!"
The boys pull on Thomas and Amelia. The girl saw the griever's stinger protruded and she suddenly began to panic. Alby suddenly grabbed the knife Amelia dropped when she fell and charged at thr griever. He chopped off it's stinger and it was firved to let go of Chuck.

Amelia pulled Chuck into her arms, happy he was now safe.

"Chuck, are you okay?" Thomas kneeled beside them to check on him.

"Yeah," he told him, before looking up at their leader. "Thanks, Alby."

Amelia smiled at her friend but it immediately dropped when Alby was grabbed by a griever. Amelia stood up and grabbed on to his arm. She used all her strength to pull him back. She couldn't lose him. They had just saved him. She really couldn't.

Thomas helped the girl buy grabbing on to Alby's other arm. "Alby!" she screamed when she noticed he wasn't struggling. She knew what he was doing and she hated it. She wanted him to fight. He had to fight to survive.

"No, please," she cried out to her friend as she held on to him. "Lia. . ."

"Please!" she cried, tears forming in her eyes. She couldn't lose him as well. "Alby!"

A tear rolled down Alby's cheek as he stared at the girl. She kept on pulling him back. "Lia, it's okay."

"No!"
Alby then turned to Thomas. "Thomas. . .get them out of here."

Alby loosened his grip on the two, letting himself be taken by the grievers. Lia's lip parted, as a painful scream left her lips. "Alby!" she clawed to get him back but Thomas pulled her back. "No!"

She pushed Thomas away and ran after him, the others calling after her. Thomas followed her out of the hall just to find the grievers all gone.

"Where is everybody?"

The Glade was left in shambles. Some of the torches were still and some objects were on fire causing a bed of smoke to circulate the area. Amelia fell to her knees at the reality that Alby was gone. Her best friend was gone. Newt crouched down beside her and pulled her into a hug to let her cry.

Through the smoke, shadows could be seen moving from across them.

"Who's that over there?" Fry asked looking over to see a few boys walking over. Amelia pulled away from Newt to see what they were referring to.

"Gally—"

Gally punched Thomas to the ground. The girl jumped up to pull Gally away from Thomas. "This is all you, Thomas! Look around!" Gally told Thomas as Amelia pushed Gally away from Thomas.

"You heard what Alby said! He's one of them!" Gally yelled out.

"One of who?" Newt asked him.

"He's one of them, and they sent him here to destroy everything, and now he has! Look around, Thomas! Look around! This is your fault!" Gally yelled out. Amelia knew what he meant. Alby had told her and Thomas that he saw them. If what has happened today is anyone's fault, it was hers.

She created the grievers, she deserved to get all the blame for it.

"What are you talking about? Calm down."

"They sent him here, and now he's destroyed everything that we've built!"

"It's not his fault! If anyone's to blame it's me," Amelia said and Gally looked down at the girl in front of him. She took a step back from Gally.

"Maybe he's right," Thomas whispers and Amelia looked back to see Thomas now holding the stinger in his hand.

"Thomas—"

"I need to remember."

"Thomas—Thomas! No, don't!"
he stabbed the stinger into his thigh.

"Thomas!" Teresa yelled out as Amelia rushed over to catch Thomas before he hit the ground.
"Chuck, get the other syringes!" Teresa yelled at Chuck and the boy ran off. Amelia stared at the boy in front of her.

She was to blame for the destruction of their home. From what Alby told her, she created the grievers. It was because of her that so many gladers lost their lives today.
Her eyes moved to the stinger that layed at Thomas' side. She needed to remember everything.

As they argued over each other, the girl went to grab the stinger. Teresa turned to Amelia and her eyes widen when she saw the girl. "Lia, don't!" Teresa went to stop but Amelia stabbed the stinger into her stomach.

"Lia!"

Newt and Gally ran to Amelia's side as she fell back. Darkness finally taking over.
