ch 13

Alby groaned in agony as they stood a few feet away from him. They were all back at the med-jack's that evening. They were all worried about Alby. He was their leader and they didn't know what to do with him. Amelia didn't know what to do. Alby was her best friend. The person she had relied on since she first came out of the Box. She could bear seeing him like that.

“We don't even know what this stuff is,” Newt said to Thomas. Thomas had given him one of the syringes that they had gotten from Teresa. “We don't know who sent it or why it came up here with you. For all we know, this thing could kill him.”

“He's already dying,” Thomas exclaimed. Amelia's eyes were on her friend as she watched him struglle through his constraints. Even more blue veins were popping out of his neck.

“How could this possibly make it any worse?” Thomas urged. “Come on, it's worth a try.”

"All right.” Newt nodded, caving in. “Do it.”

Newt handed the syringe to Thomas and she watched as he walked over to Alby's side, preparing to stab the serum in to Alby's chest. Thomas turned his head to the two and Amelia watched in anticipation.

“Okay-” The moment Thomas went to hover over Alby, his eyes were wide open. Blue veins around his pupils.

“You shouldn't be here!” Alby yelled, thrashing on the bed as his free hands managed to get a hold of Thomas's shirt.  “You shouldn't be here!”

“No!” Newt and the med-jacks tried to get Alby off of Thomas as he kept screaming.

“Watch out!”

“Get the syringe!” Amelia went to grab tbe syringe Thomas had dropped once Newt and Jeff were able to hold Alby down.

Her hand rose holding onto the syringe and stabbed it onto Alby's chest. Amelia waited and with one last exhale, Alby's body relaxed as he dozed off. Amelia sighed with relief that it actually worked.

“Well, that worked,” Jeff mumbled.

Amelia looked over to Thomas and asked, “Are you okay?” He just nodded in response.

Newt's eyes were fixated on Alby before he looked at everyone else, “Okay, from now on someone stays here and watches him around the clock.”

The brunette girl nodded, looking at her friend who is now resting. He wasn't in so much pain anymore. That's all she cared about now.
Gally came in staying by the door as he called out to everyone.

“Hey.”
Amelia turned to the boy thinking he had called fo her but his eyes were on Thomas. “Sundown, Greenie. Time to go.”

She had forgotten Thomas still had to stay one night in the pit. Amelia looked back at Thomas and he hesitantly made his way to the Builder. Before he passed Amelia she grabbed his shirt. “I'll send you dinner with Chuck later,” she whispered in a low tone but she was sure Newt heard her.

Thomas smiled at the girl and Gally cleared his throat. Amelia looked over at Gally and she sighed as Thomas left the room following Gally towards the pit.
Amelia looked at Newt and she stepped closer to him. “You should get some sleep.”

“Not yet. It's not even dinner yet.”

“Go sleep. I'll bring your dinner to you,” Amelia said. “You can sleep in my tent.”

She could see how tired Newt was. He needed to rest and when he gets rest then he can go back to being in command.
“Go, Jeff and I will take care of Alby. You just go sleep.”

Newt looked over at the med-jack whose back was to them. He nodded, “Okay.”
He leaned forward and kissed her on her forehead before making his way out.
Amelia looked over at Teresa who sat in the chair near the window.

“Teresa.”

The dark haired girl looked up at Amelia. “I'm going to help out the Cooks with dinner. Will you be okay here?” she asked. Teresa looked over at Alby and she nodded. “Yeah. I can take care of Alby.”

Amelia smiled. She looked at Jeff before she left. She had to make sure to make extra portions for Thomas and Newt.

Thomas sat alone in the pit when he heard the rustling of the grass outside. His head shot up and he tried to see who it was.
“Who's there?” Thomas called out.

“It's just us,” Chuck appeared along with Amelia who was holding onto a lit mason jar that helped them see each other.

“Sorry, guys.” Thomas mumbled. “What are you doing here?”

“I said I'd bring your dinner,” Amelia said before she set the jar down beside her and sat down in front of Thomas with Chuck beside.

“Here.”
She unwrapped the cloth revealing bread and a cup of soup. It was Frypan's famois bread they had been lucky to get some before everyone ate it. “Since you're going out into the maze tomorrow, I figured you can't run on an empty stomach.”

She hanxed the bowl through the crack with the bread. Thomas smiled and he moanrd in delight at the taste of food in his mouth. He had been worried if he'd ever eat. He hadn't eaten all day. Thomas drank the soup from the cup.
“Thanks, guys.”

Amelia looked at Chuck to saw him playing with a wodden figure. She did notice that he had been working on something. “Was that what you've been working on?” Amelia asked the boy.

“Yeah. What do you think?”

“It looks amazing,” she complimented.

Chuck held the wooden figure for Thomas to see. The boy in the pit leaned forward onto the door to get a closer look and said. “Wow, it looks great. What's that for?” Thomas questioned.

"It's for my parents,” Chuck answered.

“You remember your parents?”

“No,” he said sadly. “I mean, I know I must have them and wherever they are, I'm sure they miss me...but I can't miss them because I don't remember them.”

“You can still miss them, Chuck. Even if it's just the feeling of what it's like to have them,” Amelia told the boy. Amelia didn't know if she had parents. If she did, why were they looking for her?

“What do you think you're gonna find out there tomorrow?” Chuck asked, changing the subject.

"I don't know but if there's a way out, Chuck,” Thomas said. His shifted his gaze to the brunette who was now playing with the necklace around her neck. “We're gonna find it.”

Chuck stared at the figurine before he held it out to Thomas. “Here.”

“Chuck, why would you give this to me?” Thomas asked, taking the figurine from the boy. “I can't remember them anyway but maybe if you find a way out, you can give it to them for me.”

She didn't like seeing him like this. She wanted him to stay hopeful. Amelia wanted him to get out of here with her.

“I'll let you get some sleep,” Chuck announced as he stood up. “You coming, Lia?”

Amelia looked at Thomas and the boy sighed. “Hey, Chuck come here.”
The boy crouched down again. “Put out your hand. I want you to give that to them yourself. We're gonna get out of here. All of us. Okay? I promise,” Thomas told the boy as he pointed to Amelia and the girl smiled at the two.

“Yeah. All right. Goodnight.” Chuck said

“Good night, buddy.” Thomas said

Amelia turned to Thomas. “Get some sleep. We're leaving pretty early tomorrow.”

Thomas nodded and Amelia and Chuck left.  Chuck made his way to his bed while Amelia went to the kitchen to get Newt's dinner. He still had not eaten. Amelia did not want to wake him up earlier but he still needed to eat.
She poured the soup into a cup and went to get the bread she had hidden.

Amelia reheated the soup over the small fire when Gally appeared next to her. “Lia.”

“Gally, what do you need?”

“Can we talk?” he asked. The girl didn't look his way, her eyes staying focused on the soup. “I'm kind of busy.”

Gally sighed, “I know you're going into the maze tomorrow with Minho and Thomas.”

“Yeah, and?”

He stood up straight as he stared at the girl. “We won't see each other tomorrow before you leave so I just wanted to tell you to please be careful,” he uttered. Amelia looked up at the Builder as she bit her lip. “And stay safe please.”

“Okay. Is that all?”

Gally didn't know what to expect but he didn't think she'd act this coldly toward him. They had resolved the issue they had earlier but now they had another issue. He had thought she would understand since he had the Gladers best interest at heart. Gally was following the rules set by Alby. The boy had thought she'd have more admiration for him like she did for Alby but it seems like she didn't.

“Yes.” He turned and made his way to go to bed. Amelia stared at the boy's back and she closed her eyes. She wanted to give him a hug and snap him out of the daze he was in. Why couldn't he see what he's doing isn't helping them at all? Didn't he want to leave?

When the soup had been heated she made her way to her tent. She entered and closed it behind her. Newt was asleep on her bed on his side. She neared the bed and sat down at the edge.

“Newt, hey. Wake up, I brought your dinner.”

The boy stirred and he opened his eyes. She had expected his eyes to be red from sleep but it wasn't. He looked more awake than when she saw him a few hours ago.
He sat up on the bed. “It's soup and bread.”

He smiled and thanked her. She watched as he drank the soup and ate the bread. The two sat in silence as she just watched him eat the soup and bread. When he finished she placed the cup on the ground.

“Lie back down and sleep this time,” Amelia told the boy. The blonde boy sighed and layed down. She stood up and he grabbed her arm. “Where are you going?”

“I'm going to go wash my face and feet.”

Newt nodded and she went out. He waited for her not once closing his eyes. It had been over ten minutes and she finally came back. She scowled when she saw he was still awake.

“Were you waiting for me?” she asked. He nodded and she smiled. She placed the light donw beside them before she joined him on the bed. He immediately pulled her to his chest and she smiled.
“You should sleep now.”

Newt looked down at the girl. He took in her face and the small freckles on her nose. Her eyebrows knitted together as she slept. He noticed that when she was awake her eyebrows were always knitted together. Almost as if she was concentrating on falling asleep.

He and Gally were lucky to have her in their life. He hoped the two would make uo again. Newt didn't like when they fought because he was always in the middle.

Newt exhales a breath before he moved his thumb over the girl's eyebrow. Amelia's eyes opened and she looked up at him. His fingers hooked on her chin and he leaned down to place a kiss on her lips. He slow pulled away from her and he watched as her eyes softened. He smiled and pulled her body closer to his. She snuggled further into his body to feel his warmth.
