ch 10

The med-jacks had been in charge of taking care of the new girl who was unconscious. Since she was already there, Amelia had went to check up on Alby. With the state he was in, it was obvious in how much pain he was. She didn't know what she could do for her friend. She felt so useless that she couldn't help him.

Amelia sat down beside the girl. Jeff had already placed a cold towel on the girl's forehead. While Clint watched over Alby, Jeff watched over the girl. Amelia wanted the girl to wake up soon so she can answer some questions. How did she know her and Thomas' names? Did they know each other? She had so many questions that needed answers.

“Thomas, you. . .Amelia. . .” The girl whispered.

If only she could remember who this girl was. It would answer so many questions. Jeff looked at the brunette as she stared at the girl.

“Jeff, what's going on?” a familiar voice that was heard by the entrance of the med-jack hut caught their attention. Thomas and Minho following after him, Newt approached the two, eyes on the dark skinned boy and bombarded him with questions. “What's the matter with her? Why won't she wake up?”

“Hey man, I got my job the same way you did,” Jeff told him and the both of them looked at Amelia. She had been the one to assign them their jobs.

Newt walked closer to Amelia. “Do either of you two recognize her?” Newt asked

“No.” They both denied. They really didn't.

“Really? Because she seemed to recognize you both,” Newt said. Amelia didn't know what to say to that. She had been in the maze for three years. Did anyone outside really remember her?

“What about the note?” Thomas said, changing the subject.

“We'll worry about the note later.”

“I think you should worry about it now.” Amelia agreed. They needed to worey about the note first. While the girl is unconscious there is nothing they can do. They have to stay focused on the note for now.

“We've got enough to deal with at the moment.” Newt told him.

“He's right, Newt.” Jeff spoke up, his eyes trained on the blonde boy. “If the Box isn't coming back up, how long do you think we can last?”

“No one said that,” the blonde boy stated. “Let's not jump to any conclusions. We'll just wait until she wakes up and see what she knows. Somebody has gotta have some answers around here.”

“Okay.” Thomas uttered, turning around to leave the room.

Newt called after him, “And where are you going?”

“Back into the maze.” The dark-haired boy simply stated. Amelia groaned, running her hand through her hair. These boys ate giving her a headache. Thomas more than the others.

With a sigh, Amelia stood up from her chair. “I'll go talk to him,” she said, walking past him. Newt grabbed her arm before she could pass him. “I think you should go talk to Gally as well.”

“You know what, if he wants to stay mad, let him stay mad. We have more important things to deal with at the moment. He's just being an asshole at this point. Everyone moved on except him,” Amelia said. Newt sighed, “Amelia, please, just go talk to him.”

She stared into the boy's eyes. The way he looked at her made her crumble. She hated when he gave her those eyes.
“Fine, I'll talk to him.”
She leaned over and kissed his cheek. He seemed more stressed than ever. Being second-in-command must be hard for him. “I'll be back.”

Exiting the hut, Amelia immediately spotted Thomas. She jogged after him and she grabbed him by his shirt pulling him back. “What the hell do you think you're doing?” Amelia asked the boy.
Minho appeared from behind them in a huff.

“What is this with you, huh? A death wish?” Minho questioned, squinting his eyes. “You just got out and now you want back in?”

“Newt said that no one has ever seen and killed a Griever and lived to tell about it, right?” Thomas inquired, looking between the two runners. “Guys, now we have one. You're telling me you're not even a little bit curious?” he asked.

Minho looked at Amelia and he shook his head. “Not really, no.”

Thomas looked at Amelia and she scrunched uo her nose. “I kind of am,” Amelia exclaimed, but she immediately shook her head when Minho gave her a look. “But still.”

“Come on,” Thomas said. He looked at Amelia and suddenly remembered what happened with that griever. “Lia, don't you want to know what happened with the griever that just shut down in front of us?”

Amia had forgotten about that. She bit her lip and she looked at Minho. Now she was even more curious. Maybe they could take a look at that too. “Wait, now that you mentioned it, maybe we can take a look at that one too.”

“Yeah.”

“No, Lia, we're not going back out there.”

“Come on, Minho,” Amelia urged, nudging her friend in tbe side. Minho gave the girl a side glance. With a sigh, the dark-haired asian faltered, “So, what's the plan?”

A grin broke out on the girl's face. “Yes.”

“But what're you gonna do? Go out and dissect that thing all by yourselves?” Minho asked Thomas.

“We will if we have to,” Thomas said, checking Amelia if she was actually on board with it. She wasn't before but after she remembered what happened with that griever, she was now. She nodded and he smiled at her.

“Have the other runners left yet?” Thomas asked Minho.

“The other runners quit this morning,” Minho said. Amelia furrowed her brows and Minho pointed towards the group of former runners talking to Gally. Amelia bit the inside of her cheek as she glared at the boy.

She didn't blame any of them for quitting. After what happened with Ben and Alby, she understood why they would quit but she didn't like the fact that Gally may be behind it.

“After Alby got stung, they're not in any hurry to get back out there,” Minho explained, keeping his eyes on the boys before looking back at Thomas. “Why are you?”

“I think it's time we find out what we're really up against.”

“All right but you're not going back out there alone. Meet me in the woods in half-an-hour,” Minho said before he ran off.

“I need to go talk to someone. Meet you in thirty minutes,” Amelia said to Thomas. He nodded and the girl walked up to Gally and the other runners.

“Here she comes,” she heard one of the runners say.

She stopped in front od them, her gaze staying on Gally. “Gally, I need to talk to you,” she said and turned to leave not waiting for him to answer her. Gally followed after her without protest.

The two walked over to the homestead and into Amelia's tent. It was the only place they had privacy and it ensured that he wouldn't just run off.
He closed the door after him. She turned around ready to give him a piece of her mind.

“You know I—”

She gets pulled into his chest in a gasp before his lips meet hers. Her hands are frozen at her side as his lips stays on her for a few more seconds.
He pulls away and utters, “I'm sorry. I'm a fucking asshole. I shouldn't have yelled at you. I shouldn't have said that to you.”

The girl blinked trying to remember what she was going to say. Him kissing her caught her completely off guard. “Please, forgive me. I know you've only ever thought about the Gladers. I know how much everyone means to you but you mean more to me. I just was angry and upset that I wasn't there to protect you. I'm stupid, I know.”

Gally stared at the girl waiting for her to say something. She pulled away from him. “Yes, you're stupid but I understand why you were so angry,” she said. “I should've listened to you and Newt and I'm sorry too.”

“Do you forgive me?”

“No, I don't. You were being a complete dick at the meeting in the Council Hall,” Amelia said. She didn't forget about that. “Lia, you have to understand—”

“No, I won't understand. You were being an asshole but we have more important things to deal with now,” Amelia said. “And the important things doesn't include punishing Thomas.”

“Lia, he has been disrupting order and breaking rules since he got her.”

“So have I, but you guys aren't punishing me,” Amelia said.

“Why are you always so hell-bent on defending him?” Gally asked frustrated. “Do you like him?”

“No,” Amelia said. “Wait, is that why you've been on Thomas' case? Did you think I liked him or something?”

“No. I just hate that he's—”

“Breaking the rules and disrupting everything. Yeah, you already said that,” Amelia said. “But explain why you hate him so much?”

“Because. . .because he was there for you when I should've been. He protected you when I should've been the one to do it,” Gally said. Amelia sighed, shaking her head. “Is that why you're like this?”

Gally looked down, eyes closed. He was embarrassed that he felt that way.

Amelia grabbed his hands. “Gally, hey, look at me.” He raised his head to look at her.
“You don't always have to protect me. I can do it myself,” Amelia said. “Also do you think he protected me? It's more like I protected him.”

“I'm sorry. This is embarassing.”

“Not really but you can kiss me again to make it less embarrassing,” Amelia said wiggling her brows.

Gally smiled stepping forward. His hand moved behind her ear as he leaned down to kiss her. His thumb stroked her cheek as his lips moved against hers. Her hands wrapped around his waist, pulling her closer to him. He slightly pulled away before rubbing her nose with his. He gave a peck on the lips and smiled.
“Better now?”

“Much better.”
