Chapter five...

A Ornithopter landed on the ground. (Y/N) and Paul knew who this was so they sprinted towards the aircraft, "Duncan!"

"My girl! My boy!" Duncan exclaimed, catching the two young adults in his arms in a hug, laughing loudly as he lifted them up in the air slightly.

"I swear you two are getting taller." Duncan said once he put them down, arms around their shoulders.

"Well, you smell much worse." Paul fired back and (Y/N) laughed.

~

"For four week I've lived with the Fremen, hidden in the desert, in the community called the sietch. Stilgar, the leader of that sietch has come with me to meet you, sir." Duncan told The Duke.

"The sietch, how is it hidden?" The Duke asked.

"It's under ground. Arrakis is filled with caverns."

"How big was the place?" (Y/N) asked with a small smile.

"It's a ten thousand people, and there are hundreds of sietches." Duncan stated proudly.

"Millions of Fremen. You were right." The Duke breathed, in awe.

"The Harkonnen estimate was fifty thousand on the whole planet." Thufir said back to The Duke.

"The Fremen watched me search for them for days. I never saw them. Finally, they sent a warrior out to kill me. And I gotta tell ya, I've never come so close to dying." Duncan explained quietly, "There's no finer fighter in the Imperium. They fight like demons."

"Desert power." When The Duke said this he glanced at (Y/N) who was watching Duncan.

"Sir, their leader has a knife he won't surrender, sire." A guard informed The Duke.

"It's a crysknife, it's sacred to his people." Duncan explained.

The Duke waved his hand, "Let him pass."

The door opened and out came a man who apparently was walking a bit fast because Paul pushed (Y/N) behind him, becoming protective over the girl like usual.

"Stop there. Hey! Hey!" A guard yelled and Stilgar didn't care as he walked further. The male pulled his hoodie down when he came more closer to The Duke.

"Stilgar, welcome." The Duke greeted him, "Sir, I respect the personal dignity of any man that respects mine."

Stilgar said nothing at first, and suddenly he inhaled and spat on the table.

(Y/N) winced at this and Gurney was about to take out his weapon but Duncan said something, "Thank you, Stilgar, for the gift of your body's moisture. We accept it in the spirit in which it was given." Duncan spat back onto the table. (Y/N) had to hold her thoughts as she watched.

The Duke spat onto the table as well, causing (Y/N) to hide her cackle with a cough. Paul heard her cackle and smiled to himself asmused.

"I'm glad you've come. I believe your people and mine have much to offer one another." The Duke spoke.

"You are outworlders, you come here for the spice. You take it, giving nothing in return." Stilgar's gruffly voice finally talked, though something only Paul noticed was that the Fremen wasn't looking at (Y/N) when he talked. The male was only looking at everyone else as he said those words, not her. Thoughts ran wild through Paul's mind, and he stepped closer to the (H/C) haired girl.

"That's true." Paul spoke up.

"I know you've suffered at the hands of the Harkonnen. Name what you want. If it's in my power to grant I'll give it and ask for nothing." The Duke offered.

Stilgar hummed, "I ask for this: do not seek our sietches, do not trespass in our lands. The desert was ours long before you came. So, come and dig your spice, but when you have it, go back to this side of the shield wall and leave the desert to the Fremen and the Ardh Walker." (Y/N)'s attention was brought up by the name he mentioned.

"You will address The Duke as 'my lord' or 'sire'." Gurney corrected the Fremen.

"Gurney, just... just a moment," The Duke paused, "The Emperor has given me Arrakis as my fief to rule and protect. I cannot promise not to travel into the desert if duty compels me. But your sietches will be yours forever and you will never be hunted while I govern here."

Stilgar thought for a second, "That's very honorable. I must go. That's all I have to say to you." He turned to walk away and (Y/N) had to bite her tongue to stop her laugh.

"Why don't you stay. We would honor you." Paul offered up, stopping the Freman in his tracks.

"Honor requires that I be elsewhere." Stilgar answered, turning around to see (Y/N) now standing next to Paul, "I know who you two are." He muttered in his language, nodding at the girl who stood confused.

"I don't like him." Gurney commented once the Fremen had left.

"Our plans bears fruit." Thufir inputted from beside the male.

"But it will take time." The Duke replied.

"Yes. It will take time."

~

(Y/N) sat next to Duncan with Paul on the other side of her, and Gurney on the opposite side of where they were sitting inside a smaller area.

"Here, this is for you two." Duncan handed her and Paul something.

Paul opened his, "It's a paracompass."

(Y/N) opened hers and she gasped releasing what it was, "It's a quarterstaff!" This was something she always wanted, a weapon that was easy to control.

(A/n Starwars anyone??)

She turned to Duncan smiling big, "Thank you so much."

Her father like figure smiled back at her, ruffling her hair, "Of course kid."

"The moons here have a magnetic field, so a simple compass needle won't point north. Takes a clever piece of clockwork to sort it out." Duncan explained Paul's gift.

"Do Fremen make these?" Paul questioned.

"And stillsuits, and sand compactors and all kinds of ingenious things. Including (Y/N)'s weapon." Duncan told everyone who was listening.

"What the hell is a sand compactor?" Gurney asked.

Duncan handed the old man something, the object looked like a massive torch, "That's a sand compactor."

Paul laughed, his perfect smile showing making (Y/N)'s heart flutter in her chest.

Gurney smiled a bit amused, "My god, man, you're gone native."

"You admire them." (Y/N) looked at Duncan, twirling around her new quarterstaff in hand.

Duncan nodded at her, small smile on his lips, "I do. They're fierce but loyal. Reminds me of you (Y/N)."

The girl laughed to herself at his comment, and nudge his side a little.

~

The next day came around fast, the sun high in the sky brightening up everything around.

(Y/N) was in a Fremen suit, her quarterstaff slang over her shoulder and walked right beside Paul who had the same suit on.

The group arrived at a ornithopter with a woman standing there waiting, "The Judge of the Change, sire. Dr. Liet Kynes." Gurney introduced.

"My Lord, Duke, welcome to Arrakis." Liet bowed her head to show respect.

"You are the imperial ecologist." (Y/N) spoke up excited, "Thank you for the stillsuits."

Liet turned to her, her eyes going wide a little at who was standing in front of her but nevertheless the woman answered, "They are Fremen make, the best. With your permission, sire, I must check the integrity-"

Gurney and some other soldiers pulled out their blades, the old man holding his against Liets throat.

"Ohh, it's all right." The Duke reassured Gurney who had let her go, backing off, "Dr. Kynes, we're in your hands."

Liet began checking everyone suits, "A stillsuit is a high-efficiency filtration system. Even this early in the morning you wouldn't survive two hours without one of these. It cools the body and recycles the water lost to sweat. Your bodies movements provide the power. Inside the mask you'll find a tube to allow you to drink the recycled water. In good-working order your suit won't lose more than a thimble full of water a day."

"Most impressive." The Duke commented. Liet smiled a little at him, and now turned to (Y/N).

"Let's have a look at you, kid." She began checking her suit with everyone watching closely, more so Paul staring at (Y/N) worried.

"You've worn a stillsuit before?" Liet asked, seeing nothing wrong.

"No, this is my first time." (Y/N) answered, shaking her head.

Liet just stared at the (H/C) haired girl in the eyes, looking down to her boots, "Your desert boots off at a slip fashion at the ankles. Who taught you to do that?"

(Y/N) glanced back at Paul and turned back to the lady, "It seemed the right way."

Liet narrowed her blue spiced eyes on (Y/N), nodding almost as she was thankful for the girl, ""She will know her customs as if she was born with them.'" She muttered in her language.

(Y/N) didn't understand what she said so asked, "Are you Fremen?"

"I am accepted in both sietch and village." She answered her then turned back to everyone else, "Now, come and see the spice sands on which your livelihood depends."

~

Everyone got into the two ornithopters and both of them were now flying over the beautiful desert.

(Y/N) was looking out the window, a weird feeling stirring inside her as she looked.

"What you do if your ornithopter went down out here?" Paul questioned next to his childhood best friend.

"You wouldn't want to go down out there. It's worm territory." Liet answered.

(Y/N) looked out the windscreen of the ornithopter, seeing something out there, "Look."

Gurney followed where she was looking, "Dust cloud. I see it."

"That's one of your harvesters." Liet corrected.

The ornithopter flew more over to the dust cloud, seeing a big machine producing it, a crawler.

"You can see the spice scattered over the surface. Rich spice bed by the color." Liet explained, "If you get a little higher you'll have a better view."

The Duke did as she requested, the ornithopter a bit higher now, "You see these spotter aircraft looking for worm sign." Liet pointed to a small machine flying around them outside.

"Worm signs?" Paul asked.

"A sand wave moving toward the crawler. Worms travel deep but get closer to the surface when they attack. If you are patient we should see one." Leit said back looking around the desert.

"Worms always come?" Gurney asked.

"Always, they're drawn by the rhythmic noises."

"Why don't we just shield the crawlers?" (Y/N) questioned.

"A shield is a death sentence in the desert. It attracts the worms and drives them into a killing frenzy." Leit replied.

(Y/N) once again looked out the windshield, seeing something move in the sand, "It's a worm." The girl stated.

Leit pulled out her binoculars, indeed seeing a worm in the sand. She turned back to (Y/N) impressed, "Great eye you have."

Paul watched the interaction with pride swelling in his chest, proud of (Y/N).

"Calling crawler Delta Ajax 9. Worm sign warning. Acknowledge." Leit spoke into her head piece to them.

"Who calls Delta Ajax 9? over." A males voice sounded over the radio.

"They seem pretty calm about it." Gurney voiced.

"Unlisted flight, Imperium business. Worm sign, north and east of you. 3.7 kilometers." Leit spoke again to the crawler crew.

"Delta Ajax 9, this is Spotter 1, worm sighting confirmed. Standby for contact fix." The same males voice spoke over the radio, "Worm is on intercept course to your position. Contact in five minutes."

"So what happens now?" Gurney asked.

"They'll call the carryall to lift the crawler. They'll harvest right up to the last minute." Leit said back.

(Y/N) watched as the carryall tried to unload the anchors but one of them didn't work. The girls eyes went wide and gripped her quarterstaff.

"Shit." Leit sweared in panic.

"How many men on that crawler?" Duke asked.

"Crawler of 21." Leit answered.

"Our ships can take six each."

"That's still three short." (Y/N) stressed.

Duke looked over his shoulder at the (H/C) haired girl, "We'll find a way." He then flew the ornithopter down to the sand.

(Y/N) unbuckled, grabbing her weapon along with Paul and Gurney following.

"Paul, (Y/N), I want you two at the back of the thopter, guide them in." Duke ordered.

The said girl walked down the ramp, landing on to the sand and that same feeling came back but this time it was a calm feeling. She took a deep breath in and started walking towards the crawler, Paul close behind.

(Y/N) put her quarterstaff in front of her face, blocking out the wind the best she could, and she saw people staring to climb down the stairs of the crawler.

"Hey!" She shouted, waving her free hand in gain their attention.

"Seven over here, seven over there!" Paul shouted, gesturing to the ornithopters.

Suddenly a big gust of wind blocked any sight. Paul ran towards (Y/N) and brought her to his chest, shielding her from the wind.

She grabbed Paul's suit, feeling dizzy but played it off. She looked around seeing nothing but sand and spice. A sudden weird voice started talking in her head. Repeating the same thing over and over again, "Ardh Waker."

(Y/N) grunted at the voice in her head, slamming her quarterstaff into the sand, and all the voices stopped. When they stopped, she looked around trying to find Paul. She saw him kneeling over looking distracted, more so in trouble.

"Paul!" She cried, running over to him and skidded onto her knees. She cupped his cheeks and directed his eyes to her, "Paul! hey we gotta go!"

Paul stared at her in a daze, "You're so beautiful." He breathed out.

(Y/N) went wide eyed at his confession but continued trying to get his attention, knowing this wasn't the time for this, "Paul! Please snap out of it!" She cried.

Luckily for her Gurney arrived, picking them both up by the arm, "Get up, let's go."

They both helped Paul to the ornithopter and (Y/N) saw the worm coming closer and closer.

Once they arrived at the ornithopter, and ran up the ramp, (Y/N) turned back around to check if anyone else was at the crawler and indeed there was. The person was stuck with their leg in the ladder.

"Crap. Their stuck." She muttered to herself, looking up at Gurney who gave her look to not do it.

"(Y/N), don't you dare-" Gurney went to stop her but she was already sprinting towards the person.

Paul shaked his head, becoming out of his daze and saw his best friend running back to the crawler, "(Y/N)!" He screamed in panic.

She ignored his screams and continued sprinting towards the crawler, arriving at it she saw that it was a young kid no older than her, "Hey! I'm gonna help you get down!"

She rolled her shoulders, stabbing her quarterstaff into the ground and started climbing the ladder. Once she was up near the male, (Y/N) carefully got his leg free,  and let him drop onto the ground.

"Go to the ornithopter now!" She yelled, and the male obeyed as be nodded his head in thanks, running off to the aircraft.

(Y/N) jumped down onto the sand and grabbed her quarterstaff. She looked over to right and saw how the worm was nearly at where she was, "Alright gotta go now!"

The (H/C) haired girl was sprinting through the sand, hearing Pauls shouts of her name. She looked up towards the ornithopter seeing it already in the air, the ramp still out for her with Paul and Gunery holding on.

"(Y/N) you have to jump!" Gurney yelled to the girl, not wanting to lose the woman he thought of as a daughter.

The ornithopter was already so high off the ground (Y/N) thought it wasn't possible for her to jump. But she had not choice as the worm was just under her.

She took a deep breath in, gritting her teeth and shouted as she leaped off of the sand just as the worm was underneath her where she once stood.

The same voice was back again in her mind, whispering in a haunting voice, "Ardh Waker has awakened."

(Y/N) felt like her body was floating as she jumped into the air, like some sort of energy around was helping her jump this high, carrying her.

She shouted again and landed onto the ramp, her quarterstaff helping her stick the landing. She saw Paul's teary eyes and Gurneys shocked expression.

There was no way a normal human being could of jumped that high, no way in hell.

She gave a tired smile to Paul and then her eyes rolled to the back of her head, passing out cold against the ramp.

"(Y/N)!" Paul caught her body against his chest before it could hit the metal. The male looked down at the love of his life, tearing up at the fact he almost lost her.

"Oh, god-" He whispered, leaning his forehead against the unconscious girls one, "Why would you do that?" The male moved his forehead off hers and placed his head into the crook of her neck.

Paul was trembling.

His fingers shaking as he placed them around her back, into her hair, any where he could feel (Y/N).

The brunette continued to cradle (Y/N), his tears not stopping. And they wouldn't until he saw her beautiful, bright smile again.
