40| DR. FAUSTUS

Year 2027

It always takes a death for a life to change- an eerie oxymoron.

Sejin sat by a cold, almost frozen window, clad in what seemed like a suit he couldn't remember putting on, and the snow was raw and untampered. He was aware that he'd started forgetting things that one would expect a man like him to recall. He wasn't that old. His family had no history of memory issues. His façade was just Oscar worthy.

Nonetheless, it was something he dealt with on occasion, so he didn't think much of it now. Something in the back of his mind told him that today had to be exceptional. That had to be why he was dressed in a suit. They must be doing something special for the occasion.

The positioning of his seat created an odd juxtaposition of warmth and coldness within the house. With a blink and a shake of his head, he couldn't help but notice the hazy atmosphere that enveloped the room, leaving him perplexed. There was something peculiar about this, but it felt strangely familiar, as if it had become a customary occurrence every year on the day Seojin left this world. The air carried a subtle fragrance, his beloved perfume, hauntingly reminding him of Seojin's presence. The gentle flickering of the candle on the mantel brought forth eerie shadows, almost as if Seojin's essence lingered within these walls. Time seemed to freeze during these annual ceremonies, intensifying the bittersweet emotions that engulfed him.

The only sound to break through the gloom was a faint rustle from behind him. Curiosity piqued; he turned around to investigate the source of the sound. His heart skipped a beat as he saw a single white rose delicately placed on the table.

"Roses don't woo me anymore, Ahyun, and you know that a bit too well," Sejin quipped without letting his gaze flicker. Ahyun's eyes widened, surprised by his bold statement. She had always known him to be a hopeless romantic, but it seemed that something had changed within him. His words lingered in the air, leaving an unspoken question hanging between them.

"There was nothing we could do?" Her weary voice clicked barely.
"I did not expect anything from you after all," Sejin replied, his voice filled with resignation. "It's only that I thought your words would change the situation somehow."

Sejin lifted his head and looked at Ahyun hesitantly.
"What do you want me to say, Seojin?" It seemed like Ahyun was begging for something that would never be hers, but again, it was her fault.

"It is Mr. Kim for you." Sejin's words hung heavy in the air, a bitter reminder of their fractured relationship. Ahyun's eyes filled with regret as she realised the depth of her mistake.

"It was a one-time thing! You know I only love you, Seojin, please-"

"That onetime thing gave you a daughter out of our wedlock. That one-time thing made you a whore throughout college life. That one-time thing helped you climb the ladder of success. That onetime thing ripped off the last drape of dignity around our relationship, Ahyun."

Ahyun's heart sank as his words pierced through her like daggers; her eyes were fixed on her husband. Nearing tears by now, he was smiling so well to himself that no doubt he had been sitting there with wet eyes for hours, if not days, waiting for this moment. She didn't know what she was willing to do anymore; now that he had said it, all hell broke loose and began rolling in from every direction, no matter where they were coming from.

They both sat there for several long seconds, to which neither responded other than hiccupping breaths, which did nothing to calm down their hearts or reduce the pain still deep within them.

"One last drink before we say our goodbyes?" It was her husband, bland and empathetic, and like every other time, she nodded, dazed in hope. She let her husband lead as she raised their favourite set of glasses, letting him pour down the beautiful sparkle.

"Yours." She smiled, handing over his glass, and he returned the gesture tenfold.
Gripping the glasses, they clinked their glasses together. "Cheers to us," he quipped.

Memories of happier times flooded her mind, momentarily distracting her from the chaos surrounding her. The burn of the shiny fluid felt raw at the base of her throat, and the bittersweet taste of the drink served as a bitter reminder that this would be their final farewell, leaving her with a lingering sense of regret and longing.

"Mr. Ki-" She experienced it with utmost clarity-the suffocating grip on her throat. A surge of pain rushed through her chest- penetrating deep beneath her skin, rendering her helpless. Her trembling fingers struggled to maintain a firm hold on the vacant glass, the stem slipping away gradually, culminating in a crash that echoed through the room, leaving shattered fragments scattered on the floor.

The empty words crawled up her throat, her grabby hands cramming for help at her husband but none to her worth. He simply sat across her, sipping the last dregs of his Champaigne.
The tremors lugging across her spine had intensified to the point of injury; her palms coiled around her throat as the jerk made her fall right off the floor, pieces of the broken glass piercing through her arms and back.

"Seoji-"
And her husband stood up, a little hunched over her body now, fingers eerily tracing her features. He broke into a guwaff of laughter, the echoes residing in the corners of the room as he eyed her pain closely.

"I am your husband, my wife, but just not the man you think," Sejin groaned lowly, his lips tracing the death dancing across her face, the dread melting on his lips as he left the last touch of love on her mouth.

"I am the other twin."

His voice dripped with malice as he revelled in her agony, his eyes gleaming with sadistic pleasure. The realisation hit her like a tonne of bricks, sending a chill down her spine as she struggled to comprehend the horrifying truth. It was Sejin, but how? Didn't he die the night of her and Seojin's marriage?
In an effort to convince herself that everything turned out well, she took a deep breath.

Her eyes widened in wonder as a weird light blazed in front of her, and she tightly pursed her lips. A bright red sphere shone before her eyes, and as it shot across the sky towards where she lay. She saw it travel down her body, run its course, and dismantle her soul until she could feel no more.

The curiosity left with her, with no answers but pain, as if all of this was barely
a video game, and soon the restart would dissolve it all.

And she did somewhere deserve it all.

Sejin by now just sat on the floor, no guilt, just as he had always been, eyeing another death closely. In awe at his cruelty, he silently praised his own self. His plans never failed, and a few drops of citrus to spark her death was no big deal.

He had burned his mother down and nobody ever git a clue.

Taking in a deep breath he scanned around the room, the cold air seemed to cage his nostrils in a tingling array. But it was nothing for he had a bigger dilemma now, one that was still shining high across his sky, 'his' daughter.
All he had to do was feed her some believable lies, that would be really easy-

"Appa, eommaneun eodiiss-eo?" And it was Mi-cha, peeping through the crack of the door, her eyes wide and curious.

'Ah, too nosy!' Sejin thought, smiling widely.

"Your eomma is here, princess."

And she smiled, tiptoeing into the room and closing the door behind her. Sejin stretched his arms, ready for another crime.
Two more bodies in his basement. Safe and sound.

It always took a death for a life to change- an eerie oxymoron.

Present, Year 2076

The horror started to settle deep in his bones as the bullet grazed along his right ear all Sejin could do was hope. Death had always been in his closest proximity, but Sejin had never accepted his fate. Knowingly or unknowingly, he always fought death, like the knight who knew death would always be his ally.

The momentum halted with a swing as a pair of hands pulled him up, the glass closing right below him. He climbed through the fall, panting and sighing as he fell on his knees.
It was more than just a storm brewing in the burnouts of the building, the howling winds somehow felt like home.

"I thought," Seojin gasped, eyes cast down, panting, hands resting on his knees, "I thought I was dying."

"Oh, you won't die, brother. Where's the fun in that?"

The snap of his neck rebelled against his strength, his eyes berating his thoughts.
The voice- Seojin knew the voice well; the tones registered deep in his veins; and the face- even age couldn't dim the cognate devil he had grown up to be.

"Sejin-ah..." An involuntary slip of tongue, and to it the shiny eyes revelled, and his brother snickered horribly, "You remember me, ah! Isn't that wonderful, my brother?"
The man in black robe sat cross legged on the ground staring directly at him with a mouth wide open like an animal trying its best not tussle someone else.

And if that wasn't enough for Seojin's mind to stop gyrating, he saw another silhouette close by, the face soon being elevated by the tempering thunder.
Tobias.
The one who had brought him here in time as well was staring like a maniac now.

And before Seojin could ask why, all he felt was a needle stab right by his neck, his eyes getting heavy the very next second. He instantly saw great blotches of white and purple all across his eyes, and the pain was mind numbing. His vision exploded into bright colours and as his vision blurred, Seojin's mind raced with questions.
Why did he inject him? What was happening to him? Was he dying? Who knew? Who cared?

As Seojin's mind raced with questions, he succumbed to the darkness that engulfed him, falling unconscious.

His entire life had been spent in this desolate fog, which was filled with inexplicable entities and had a wailing maelstrom at its heart. He felt sorry for those who couldn't control this tempest for an ephemeral, insane moment.
