38| P FOR PLAN
Seojin's hands trembled with anticipation as he gingerly flipped through the yellowed, crackling pages of the ancient leather-bound tome. The Map of the Secret Building, Tobias had called it. A mysterious artifact that supposedly held the keys to unravelling the very fabric of reality itself.
Tobias leaned in, his eyes gleaming with an infectious excitement. "This is it. With this map, you'll finally be able to clear your name and claim your rightful identity. No more living in his shadow."
Seojin nodded, a fire igniting within him. For too long he had suffered the indignity of being labelled as a specimen, stripped of his own autonomy. Even the Global Identification System, designed to keep society in order, listed Sejin, his brother as himself. It was time for that to change.
"Tobias, you're a genius," Seojin breathed. "This is exactly what I need. How did you ever find it?"
His companion grinned, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Your brother isn't the only one who knows how to dig up buried secrets, you know. I've been doing some research of my own. The map was tucked away in a dusty library, hidden from prying eyes. Call it intuition, but I knew it would be important."
As Seojin carefully flipped to the next page, the Map's plan began to take shape. Intricate schematics depicted the GIS headquarters in minute detail - guard rotations, access points, network hubs. With each new revelation, his mind raced with possibility.
"This is an invasion plan for the Safety Building that houses the GIS. With the map's guidance, you can bypass all their security measures, hack their systems, and swap in your DNA samples. Once your identity is properly logged-"
"I'll be recognized as myself. Finally, I'll have my own name!" Seojin exclaimed!
"Exactly," Tobias agreed, his voice low and urgent. "The map outlines their security protocols. We just need to follow its instructions and do so. But before that we need a few more things!"
...
Tobias and Seojin made their way through the bustling city streets, their eyes scanning cautiously for any signs of danger. The sun beat down mercilessly, glinting off the metal and glass towering around them, but all they could feel was urgency pulsing through their veins. This was it - their chance to scope out the heavily guarded GIS Safety Building undetected.
"It's nearly noon," Tobias muttered, checking his watch. "That's when the staff go on lunch break. If we time this just right, the coast should be clear."
Seojin nodded, adjusting the dress he was wearing. The plan had been Tobias' idea - with Seojin dressed as a woman, they could pose as a couple and blend in with the throngs of people delivering food to the security-conscious facility. It made him uncomfortable, but he trusted Tobias's implicitly.
Posters plastered on every corner screamed his face in bold, the word "WANTED" glaring beneath. His breath hitched; betrayal tasted bitter on his tongue.
Tobias had said he had been to this building once in his life, and before blindly following the little yellow diary, it was better to have a look at the building physically, and if possible, to get all the codes to hack the security system and the cameras before deciding what to do and how.
"But wouldn't there be cameras?" It irked Seojin to think such a high-security building would be camera-less.
"That's the reason we are dressed up like this!"
They approached the building, an imposing structure of reinforced concrete and bulletproof glass. Armed guards flanked the entrance, their gazes steely and alert. Tobias slipped an arm around Seojin's waist, guiding him through the crowds.
"Just act natural," he whispered. "Smile and keep moving."
Seojin forced his lips into a grin, his heart hammering against his ribcage as they approached the checkpoint. The guard eyed them suspiciously but waved them through after a cursory glance at the lunch packets they were carrying. They slipped inside, breathing a silent sigh of relief.
The lobby was cavernous, marble floors gleaming beneath their feet. Inside the building, the same posters lined the sterile corridors. Elevated walkways criss-crossed the space, leading to various subsections of the building. They needed to move fast, before the guards changed shifts and the place swarmed with activity once more.
Tobias consulted the blueprints he had memorized. The records room was two floors up on the left. He motioned for Seojin to follow and they crept up the stairs, using a service passage. At the landing, voices could be heard from an open office. Tobias held up a hand - wait. Two men walked by, chatting, then disappeared around the corner. Tobias slackened.
The hallway was empty. Tobias made quick work of the records room lock. Inside were rows of filing cabinets filled with sensitive company documents. Tobias got to work, pulling out dossiers and financials, handing them to Seojin to stuff into his bag.
"There!" Tobias hissed, pointing to a stairwell tucked away in a corner. "Take the stairs up to the third floor. That's where they keep the central planning rooms."
Seojin nodded, smoothing down his skirt. He took the steps two at a time, his mind racing. They reached the security office, and Tobias quickly picked the lock. The door swung open with a soft click, revealing a room filled with monitors and blinking lights.
"You see the glass window up there?" Tobias nudged Seojin to look up the dome shaped ceiling. "That's where you will enter from. Get to work now," Tobias urged.
Third floor. He peered out into the corridor, spying at least a dozen closed doors while Tobias pulled out a small USB drive from the lunch packet. His fingers flew over the keyboard as he inserted the drive and began to hack into the system.
Walking out into the corridor, Seojin was about to signal Tobias when a voice made him freeze.
"Well, well. And what have we here?"
Seojin turned slowly, forcing a vacant smile onto his face. A muscular man in GIS insignia stood behind him, arms crossed over his chest. Of course, one of the guards had stayed behind.
"Um, sorry," Seojin stammered, trying to inject a feminine lilt into his voice. "We were just looking for the bathroom. We're new here, you see."
The guard's eyes narrowed. He took a step closer and Seojin fought the urge to bolt. Think, Seojin, think. Then he had it.
"I'm so sorry, I'm just...I'm afraid I'm going to be sick." He made a show of clutching his stomach, doubling over. "Could you perhaps point me in the right direction?"
The guard muttered something uncomplimentary but jerked his head down the corridor. Seojin bobbed a grateful nod and scurried off in the direction he'd indicated, praying the man would follow.
The bathroom was empty, thank God. He ducked inside just as he heard the guard's footsteps receded. Heart in his throat, Seojin raced back to the stairwell, pounding down the steps. He burst out into the lobby and collided with Tobias, who was already moving for the exit.
"Got it," Tobias panted, holding up a small device. "Layout schematics. Now move, move!"
Alarms began to blare as they charged for the doors, but they were already out and sprinting down the street, soon swallowed by the oblivious lunchtime crowds. They didn't stop running until they were blocks away and inside the car.
Seojin struggled out of the hated dress as soon as they were safe. "Never again," he swore venomously.
Tobias just grinned, patting the device in his pocket with satisfaction. "You were great, babe. We make a good team."
Seojin rolled his eyes, but couldn't help smiling. "And you are old."
He couldn't believe a person, a simple human like him had sneaked into a building in a city that labelled him as a devil and did something so daring. And probably, this was the first time he had done something for himself.
They had the GIS files. And he had to admit - this heist had been fun, in its way. Dumb, dumb, dumb, but a blast. Tobias made everything fun. They'd done it. One step closer to bringing down Sejin and his brutal regime.
Tires screeched and the chassis swayed as Tobias took the sharp turn at breakneck speed. "We're clear of those people," he said, glancing in the rearview mirror before twisting a button, causing the GPS screen to go dark. "Alright, now for the final task. This is on you, just you. No one else."
Seojin swallowed hard, his mouth dry. He knew what this meant. Seojin had mixed feelings. Part of him was eager for the thrill, the rush of adrenaline. The other part...was scared.
Tobias took another sharp turn, the tires screeching in protest. Seojin gripped the passenger seat, his heart racing not just from the speed but from the enormity of what they'd just accomplished. They were one step closer to dismantling Sejin's brutal dictatorship, and it felt like a victory, albeit a small one.
"We're a block away from home," Tobias continued, voice low and even. "I've already got the code to hack the security feeds. You will have a fifteen-minute window before they realize you're inside. Questions?"
Seojin shook his head, mind racing. He'd memorized the schematics, the guard patrol routes, the fail-safes.
"Good," Tobias said with a curt nod. "Let's move."
Seojin's eyes widened. Tobias was the closest thing to family Seojin had left. But even he didn't know what really made Tobias tick. Sighing, Sejin leaned his head back. "Alright. I trust you."
Tobias softened with a sidelong smile. "Now get some rest. You have a long day ahead."
Yawning, Sejin closed his eyes, mind still reeling. Whatever this mission was, he had a feeling it would change everything. For better or worse. He just hoped Tobias knew what the hell he was doing...
