25| FIRST STEP

As the final semester of college began, a sense of fear descended upon the classroom. The professor, renowned for his unorthodox teaching methods, was known to embrace the fear and encourage students to think outside the box. And students remained tense.

Sejin clicked the switch as the projector whirred. Numerous pictures came in view, one after the other as he spoke.

"Einstein considered this to be a natural consequence of special relativity, not a paradox as some suggested, and in 1911, he restated and elaborated on this result. If we placed a living organism in a box, one could arrange that the organism, after any arbitrary lengthy flight, could be returned to its original spot in a scarcely altered condition, while corresponding organisms which had remained in their original positions had already long since given way to new generations. For the moving organism, the lengthy time of the journey was a mere instant, provided the motion took place with approximately the speed of light."

The rimmed glasses sat its butt atop the crown of his nose that crunched involuntarily yet caused a significant sigh to run down a handful of women in the room.

Sejin was blindly charming, smooth pinkish puckered lips, Ahyun tresses warily discarded over the back of his head, witty and a gold-medallist. Some even called him a heartless, arrogant professor.
Reasons? He hated the unnecessary fandom.

"Scientist Resnick too had supported the whole cause- if the stationary organism is a man and the traveling one is his twin, then the traveller returns home to find his twin brother much aged compared to himself. The paradox centres on the contention that, in relativity, either twin could regard the other as the traveller, in which case each should find the other younger—a logical contradiction. This contention assumes that the twins' situations are symmetrical and interchangeable, an assump- ah, Miss Wilkins, mind sharing what you have been sharing with your beloved friend, mmh, Jenna."

Oh, just another piece of advisory: If you are in one of Professor Kim's classes, die but do not disturb him.

He continued to stare at her with his body bent, supporting it on his elbows which in turn remained stiff on the table. "Tell us."

"Sir, I-"

"We do not have the whole class Miss. Wilkins. Tell us..."

He was one scary professor specially in the background of his tattered science classes. Not his fault that he was faultless yet people were scared. Jenna visibly stuttered, they knew pretty well a sure suspension was awaiting her, and Kate Wilkins might be able to save her own ass.

"Sir, we ac-ctu-"

"Sir," Kate stood up straight, "I was merely sharing a thought."

Sejin arched an eyebrow, a mischievous grin playing at the base of his throat. "And what was this thought, Miss Wilkins?"

"It was about a paradox," Kate replied, her voice gaining strength. "The one where if you had a twin, you would still look better and much more handsome."

Sejin couldn't help but chuckle, a deep rumble escaping from his throat. It was one of those terrible chuckles he had kept up his sleeves all these days. "Oh, really?" he said, amusement dancing in his eyes. "Was it more interesting than the class? Or perhaps more interesting than getting a degree?"

Without missing a beat, Sejin sat down in his chair and began scribbling something hastily on a piece of paper. The room fell into a hushed silence, with Kate and Jenna exchanging worried glances.

"Sir, you cannot do that to us!" And Kate had guessed just the right thing.

Sejin looked up, a twinkle of amusement in his eyes, "Oh, it's just you and not your friend," he said, his voice dripping with mock sympathy. "She apologized without fault, but you..." He trailed off, leaving the weight of his words hanging in the air.

Desperate to salvage the situation, Kate gathered her courage. "Sir, I..."

"Professor Kim?"

A voice at the classroom door had abruptly put a stop to the holler midway; Mr. Harrison Wilkins was there.

"Mr. Harrison? Why didn't you call for me instead?" Professor Kim enquired; his gaze fixed on the unexpected visitor. Mr. Harrison chuckled lightly, walking inside the classroom. The students were quick to stand up, showing their respect for the esteemed head of the administration.

He came in with something in his hand, and not until he was completely through the door did Sejin realise it was a piece of paper. What paper?

"No, no, it's quite alright and I thought you might find this interesting, Professor Kim," Mr. Harrison said, holding out the paper. The professor tentatively took the sheet, his curiosity piqued. There, in his hands, was an old and faded document.

His voice still echoed throughout the room, "I just wanted to say congratulations."

Sejin, confused, looked around to see if anyone else was as confused as he was. When he saw that they weren't, he slowly sat back down in his chair, his confusion slowly turning into realization, and then into awe. The man in the brown suit was holding an envelope, and Sejin knew what was inside of it. He had been waiting for this day his entire life, and it was finally here.

"Congratulations Professor Kim, your thesis has been accepted. You can work on the theory of Twin Paradox to prove its validity."

His thesis had been accepted.

The room erupted in applause and cheers, as Sejin's face lit up with an indescribable joy. It was a moment that he had worked tirelessly for, dedicating countless hours to research, sleepless nights, and tireless revisions. His groundbreaking thesis on The Twin Paradox had finally received the recognition it deserved.

Harrison took the chance, pulling Sejin aside and hugging him close. "Keep our secret in, Sejin," he whispered, his voice laced with horror.
His eyes darted around nervously, as if expecting someone to appear at any moment.

"Zipped, Harrison."

...

"The fuck Kim!"

"Language Green!"

"To hell with your language! What was your idea exactly now?"

"To prove the theory and get famous," Sejin chuckled, going back to the heap of sheets scattered across his room.

"I heard it on the television you ass, you think this is a joke? I have told you a thousand times to stop going for that twin paradox thing. Why don't you listen to me?"

Tobias was unbelievably astounded. The university had somehow agreed to the craziest theory ever, the whole world was talking about a mad scientist named Kim Sejin. What the heck was his best friend even thinking?
From the bland history of this prestigious building came horrors, tragedies, and secrets. It was scary. What Sejin chose was scary.

The man in question however laughed for a minute straight before returning to the pile of sheets that littered his room.

Two things, the surrealist scene that Sejin experienced and the "certain undercurrent of knowledge" coming from Sejin himself, indicated that Sejin was struggling with his own inner demons. His life had ended in a loop of his own insecurities, although the self-destruction he was turning to only exacerbated his problem.

"Congratulate me first! Profanities can wait."

"Congratulations my ass! What makes you think the twin paradox will work? Are you dumb?"

And Sejin didn't even respond. The unbearable achromaticity of being patient.

"Are you deaf- fuck!" The bright room had suddenly gone off veiling the whole room in a pitch-black darkness. And he tried to adjust his eyes to the darkness, blinking them.

Tobias rubbed at his eyes, and for a moment after opening them, he was sure that he saw Sejin's pale face swimming in the air in front of him, its lips forming silent words of mockery in his personal darkness. He hiccupped and shook his head as he sank to his knees in front of the table in the middle of the room. He folded his hands and mockingly pretended to pray to his embodiment that still swam miraculously in front of his eyes. He closed his eyes, whispered a pray filled with obscenities, and when he opened his eyes, he still sat there.

Sejin chuckled at his antics and searched the table with his clumsy fingers for a match for the candle he had been carrying around in his pocket for the past hour, though he couldn't recall how it had gotten there. Finally, he located the open book and took a match from his pocket. He lighted it with practised accuracy, saw the flame go down the match's body, and then fought to get the candle out of his pocket. Just before the heat touched his fingertips, he held the flame against the wick. The candle was in his fist, and his abode had a strange, unsteady aspect.

Tobias scoffed, getting up and sitting back down on the couch, "Why the heck are you carrying a candle in your pocket?"

The latter had already got back to his seat as well, compiling his sheets, putting them to order, "This loadshedding has been a matter of irritation this whole evening, so."

"And why the hell did you apply with this whole shit of a theory again? You told me you had dropped it, didn't you? Then what is this?"

Sejin smiled again, now done filing his pages, "Aren't you happy for me?"

Tobias by now was seething in anger and frustration, he too was a physicist and he knew so very well how horrifying the results could be.

"Which twin have you selected? Who would want to be a part? Tell me!"

He grabbed Sejin's arm lightly, wanting to get an answer.

"Being a physicist isn't that much different from being a lawyer, really," Sejin finally spoke up removing his arm, "I am trying something beyond the normal minds and who knows, everything might turn out just right. But I got to try, right?"

"But-"

"I know you are scared for me, for the people willing to work for this, but trust me, Tobias, please."

"But, you know, what if-"

"Tobi, I beg, please..." Sejin looked into his eyes with a look of hope.

At last, he shook his head in defeat, moving on inside of him to give him a hug, as if there were no more danger outside, when suddenly it all clicked around with an icy chill coming over him way too quickly. His only friend.

"It's okay Tobi, don't worry about me anymore!"

The sudden news had put some fear into his chest already even though he could not really understand what was happening any longer!
"You are my best friend Sejin, I don't want to lose you. Please be safe, please."

"You will never lose me Tobi, never."

Thank you so much for all your love.
