Or maybe there was no hope for them anymore, and their past had finally caught up with them?

He didn't know, and he didn't want to know, and maybe that's why the whole time he was packing their things, her things, he was crying, absolutely devastated as he glanced now and then at his daughter who sat on her cradle, a stuffed puppet of a black dog in her hands while she stared at him with her brown eyes that he loved so much.

Big brown eyes that reminded him so much of his family, of the family they created during the war. A family that had been in danger since the two parents met almost three years ago.

When he finished zipping the bag full of her things, he immediately went to his daughter, taking her into his arms, shutting his eyes closed to stop himself from sobbing. He kissed her head, ignoring the taunting voices outside the house. Voices that he could never forget, and that would haunt him forever.

"We'll be fine mon rayon de soleil, I promise." He whispered to her, looking around the room one last time before taking his wand and disapparating from their home, just in time to hear them blasting open their door downstairs and getting inside the house.
{ my sunshine }

The moment he opened his eyes again, they were in front of an orphanage, and just as they had programmed, he waited. And waited, and waited.

He waited almost two hours, and then he finally acknowledged the possibility that they died, because his wife was always punctual.

And so, with a heavy heart, he kissed the baby's head, pressing his forehead against hers while sobbing, his heart breaking because their family had just shattered, and because he knew he couldn't be the one to fix her daughter's heart without putting her in constant danger.

And slowly he moved himself in front of the orphanage door, still cradling the child to his chest to shield them from the horror of the world one last time, just to keep himself sane knowing that she would grow up better without him and a bunch of crazy maniacs that tried to kill them.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, my love. I'm sorry." He pulled her away, taking a last and good look at her face, smiling when she tugged gently his dark curls, a pout on her face. "Papa loves you, he loves you so much, ma petite รฉtoile." He whispered, nodding to himself before using one hand to take off his dog tag around his neck and placing them around hers.
{ my little star }

With a quick muttering of a spell, the tags turned invisible, to not be seen until someone who knew who she was would be able to explain why she had them.

"My baby..." He mumbled, biting down a sob that threatened to leave his lips and just moved her bag in front of the door, placing her on top of it while he made sure she was covered well enough with her favorite blanket. "I...I have to go now, but papa is going to come back alright? You just...you just have to keep going, grow up, be a happy girl and I'll find you, I promise." He promised to himself, taking the piece of paper and placing it over her small body.

The father smiled at his daughter one last time, and she smiled back, blabbering something to which he nodded and hummed, before stroking her cheek and, after one last look, he pushed himself up on his feet and knocked at the door loudly, waiting until he heard footsteps to hide around the corner.

He listened as a woman gasped, muttering to herself in French, already taking the baby inside and calling for her husband to take some extra blankets just to be sure. He watched as the woman read the letter he left, and after looking one last time at his daughter, he disapparated.

When he looked up at the skies, he noticed how the stars seemed almost dull, but he managed to catch with his eyes a fallen star and he smiled, knowing the stars was mourning the loss of his family just like he was.
