You rise, I fall, I stand, you crawl

βπΈπβ parked the car with a screech of tires, the Jeep coming to a halt. The wind howled around them, bending the trees at sharp angles as rain poured down in torrents, drenching the landscape in a cold, unrelenting sheet. Waves crashed violently against the jagged rocks below, the sound almost deafening as the ocean raged against the cliffside. Rain stared out at the chaos of the sea, feeling the wild energy in the air. It was the kind of storm that made the world feel on the verge of something catastrophic.
She barely had time to turn off the engine before Bella swung open the door and stepped out into the storm, her hair plastering itself to her face almost instantly. Rain groaned inwardly, watching Bella march off into the woods without so much as a word.
"Bella? Bella, hang on!" Rain called out, fumbling to unbuckle her seatbelt. "You know, normal people wait for their sisters to get out of the car first!"
No response. Bella just kept walking, head down, her pace determined and her shoulders set in that way that said she was not in the mood to be reasoned with. Rain sighed dramatically, pulling up the hood of her jacket and chasing after her.
"Great. Love a good chase in the middle of a storm. Perfect afternoon," she muttered to herself as she sloshed through the mud. "Bella, come on! It's like hurricane weather out here! Maybe this isn't the best time for a nature walk?"
The wind picked up, making it even harder to see through the rain as Rain tried to catch up. Her sneakers squelched with every step, soaked through in a matter of seconds.
"This better be important!" she shouted over the wind, her voice dripping with sarcastic energy. "I could be home right now, dry and warm, maybe reading a book with actualΒ fictional romance that doesn't involve moody vampires and life-threatening ocean jumps!"
But Bella kept going, determined as ever, until they reached the cliff. The sight made Rain's stomach drop. Bella stood at the edge, her eyes fixed on the turbulent waters far below, tears mixing with the rain on her cheeks. Her gaze was distant, lost, as if she wasn't fully there anymore, and Rain realized in an instant what she was about to do.
Panic surged in Rain's chest as she rushed forward. "Bella, stop!" she yelled, grabbing her arm just before she got any closer to the ledge. She could feel Bella's body trembling, though whether it was from the cold or something else, Rain wasn't sure.
Bella shook off Rain's grip and began pulling off her jacket and shoes, throwing them to the ground. "It's the only way I can see him," she said, her voice cracking.
Rain groaned, putting her hands on her hips in pure exasperation. "Oh, for crying out loud! Bella, your Casper of a boyfriend isn't here! But guess who is? Me. Your living, breathing sister who doesn't need to turn into a human popsicle today."
Bella's eyes filled with tears again as she looked out at the ocean. "He wouldn't stay with me anyway," she whispered.
And with that, she ran. Rain barely had time to react before Bella grabbed her wrist, dragging her toward the edge. "Damn it, Bella!" Rain yelped, trying to dig her heels into the wet ground, but it was too late.
In a desperate move, Rain spun them around at the last second, using her body as a shield to take the brunt of the fall. They plummeted off the cliff together, the freezing wind whipping past them as the roar of the ocean grew louder and louder.
They hit the water hard, the impact knocking the breath from Rain's lungs. As soon as the salty water hit Rain, a piercing scream tore from her throat. The sensation was immediate and agonizingβlike fire eating away at her skin. She let go of Bella, who quickly swam to the surface, leaving Rain submerged in a sea of pain. Her body convulsed violently, instinct forcing her to kick off her clothing and shoes as her bones snapped and reformed, each break accompanied by a searing jolt of pain.
Her skin, once warm and familiar, stretched and split apart, transforming into a sleek, shimmering grey that rippled under the water's current. She gasped as her back tore open, a long, jagged fin ripping through the flesh. Her sides throbbed, the skin splitting to make way for gills that flared open, desperate to take in the saltwater. Rain's hands twisted, the bones elongating, her fingers webbing together as her nails morphed into vicious claws.
Each change came with unbearable agony, her muscles spasming as her jaw ached, her teeth sharpening into deadly points. Every fiber of her being screamed in torment as her human form was replaced by the powerful, predatory body of a siren. When the transformation was complete, she looked at Bella who was at the surface of the water and Rain used every fiber of her body to not drown her, Rain swam up and faced Bella who looked at her scared but Rain yelled at her, "Great plan, Bella! Really loving this reunion with the Atlantic!"
A massive wave loomed on the horizon. Rain's eyes widened as she screamed, "Watch out!" Without a second thought, she grabbed Bella and yanked her underwater just as the wave crashed overhead, rolling them violently beneath the surface. Rain held Bella close, bracing against the powerful current that tumbled them like ragdolls. Bella, desperate for air, tried to break free and surface, but another wave slammed into her, pulling her back under.
Just as Rain was about to swim to Bella's aid, a flash of fiery red hair caught her eye. The scent hit her instantlyβvampire. Her lip curled in a furious hiss, and she darted toward the figure. It was Victoria. Rain moved with deadly speed, striking at her from all sides, dragging the vampire deeper underwater. Her claws dug into Victoria's skin as she prepared to tear her head clean off, but a piercing scream shattered her focus.
Bella.
Rain's eyes flicked toward her, seeing the blood swirl in the water as Bella collided with a rock. Victoria took the opportunity, striking Rain hard and making her lose her grip. As Victoria escaped into the depths, Rain seethed with fury, but her focus snapped back to Bella. She rushed to her, grabbing her wrist and pulling her swiftly to the surface.
As soon as they broke through the water, Jacob was there, hauling Bella out. Rain crawled out behind them, her body aching from the transformation. Her skin rippled and shifted painfully, returning to her human formβthough the fin of her tail lingered momentarily before it crumbled to ash. Shivering, Rain wrapped her arms around herself for warmth. Her human body was no match for the cold, unlike her siren form, which thrived in the deep, icy waters.
Jacob was kneeling over Bella, frantically giving her CPR. "Come on, Bella. Breathe!" he urged. Bella sputtered, coughing up water as Jacob held her close, trying to keep her warm.
Rain, still shivering, watched as Bella blinked dazedly. "What the hell were you thinking?" Jacob demanded, his tone sharp.
Bella, looking sheepish, muttered, "I needed to see something..."
Rain couldn't help herself. She chuckled, her teeth chattering as she said, "Yeah, the bottom of the ocean? Because trust me, it's not as exciting as you'd think. No Wi-Fi, terrible service. Bit of a letdown."
Jacob shot her a glare, clearly unimpressed by her sarcasm, before turning back to Bella. "Why would you jump? Didn't you notice it's like a hurricane out here? And weren't you supposed to protect her?" His anger shifted to Rain, who met his gaze with a dangerous glare of her own, a low, animalistic hiss slipping through her lips as a warning.
Jacob blinked, taken aback, but wisely chose to back off as he saw a predator.
Sam appeared out of nowhere, his voice cutting through the chaos. "Get them home! I'm heading back to Harry's place!" Without another word, Sam took off running into the storm. "Harry's place?" Bella asked, frowning in confusion. Jacob's response caught Rain's attention. "Harry had a heart attack," he said, his voice heavy with worry.
Bella's face fell with concern. "Does my dad know?"
Jacob nodded grimly, holding Bella a little closer. "He and my dad are both over there."
Rain, still shivering and fighting the cold, looked up at Jacob, her voice quiet but serious. "Is he going to be okay?"
Jacob glanced down at Bella, his jaw tight. "I don't know," he admitted. "Come on, I'll find something dry and take you back." He gestured to Bella as he scooped her up effortlessly.
Rain, though freezing and aching all over, stood up slowly. She was still shivering and limping a little from the rough transformation, her body struggling to keep up. With a sigh, she started making her way toward her car, the wind biting at her skin. She could only hope they'd get some good news about Harry soon. As she made it to her Jeep, she wrapped herself with a blanket she had in the backseat before she climbed in and waited for Bella and Jacob to arrive.
