βπΈπβ couldn't take her eyes off the beautiful white wolf standing protectively before her. There was something about his presence that made her feel safe, like nothing in the world could harm her as long as he was near. But beneath that sense of security, she felt a rising angerβan intensity that was almost tangible. It was his scent, a sudden shift that she couldn't ignore, something primal and powerful that stirred within her.
And then it hit her: she had found her mate. The realization settled over her like a wave. Erian had imprinted on her, and she could feel the bond between them strengthening with each passing moment. Imprinting was something she knew about, but she had never imagined that a siren and a shifter could be bound this way. It was unheard of, a connection that defied all the rules.
Rain glanced at Bella, who was staring at a bronze wolf with wide eyes. Rain immediately recognized the familiar scentβJacob. But before she could dwell on it, Laurent made a break for it, sprinting through the forest. The black wolf, Sam, pounced after him, but the vampire was quicker, knocking Sam back with a powerful blow. Erian looked at Rain one last time, their eyes locking in a moment of unspoken understanding, before he took off after Laurent. The rest of the pack followed, their movements synchronized, a force to be reckoned with.
Rain didn't waste any time. She ran to Bella, lifting her onto her back effortlessly. "Hold on," she instructed, and Bella clung tightly to her sister as Rain dashed through the forest at a speed that blurred the world around them. Trees whipped by in a haze, the wind rushing in their ears.
Bella's mind raced with questions. She knew Rain wasn't a vampireβher sister's warmth was proof of thatβbut what was she? As Bella believed sirens weren't real.Β The mystery of Rain's true nature gnawed at Bella, but there was no time for answers now. All she could do was hold on as Rain carried her through the darkened woods.
When they finally made it back to the house, Rain gently set Bella down, her eyes still scanning the surroundings for any sign of danger. Bella, breathless and filled with a whirlwind of emotions, stared at her sister, knowing that the secrets they both carried were about to come crashing into the light.
As the two sisters hurried inside, Bella rushed to their father, Charlie, who was sitting with Harry. They were chatting about their fishing trip, laughing as they reminisced over the day's events. Rain, however, made a beeline for the kitchen, searching for the first aid kit.
"Bella? What's wrong?" Charlie asked, noticing the distress in her eyes.
"They're not giant bearsβI saw them. Up in a meadowβ" Bella started, her words tumbling out in a rush, but Charlie cut her off with a sigh, his expression shifting to one of annoyance.
"Damn it, I told you not to go into the woods!" he scolded, his frustration evident.
Harry, noticing the tension, spoke up calmly, "What did you see, Bella?"
"Wolves. They're wolves, Dad," Bella replied, her voice firm. "Six of them. The size of cars. I swear. They went after...something."
Rain reappeared from the kitchen, now standing next to Bella, and added dryly, "Something, alright."
Bella shot her a look, one that clearly said, "Not now!" But before she could say anything more, Charlie noticed the bandage on Rain's head, the blood already cleaned off. "Rain, what happened?" Charlie asked with concern, standing up to inspect her injury. Rain shrugged, trying to downplay it. "I'm fine, Dad. I just fell. You know, gravity's not my friend today," she added with a wry grin.
Charlie sighed, but a chuckle escaped him as he shook his head. Turning to Harry, he said, "Harry, can you get some men from the rez?"
Harry nodded, his expression turning serious. "Sure. Yeah."
Charlie quickly dialed his phone, speaking into it as he paced. "Jerry? Put a hunting party together, tranq guns, large calibre shotgunsβthere's something dangerous out there." After he ended the call, Charlie turned back to the two girls. "I've gotta go to the station."
"Good!βThat's good, you should go," Bella said quickly, her anxiety pushing her words out in a rush.
Charlie nodded, grabbing his jacket as he and Harry headed for the door. Before leaving, Harry caught Rain's eye, and she gave him a slight nod, a silent understanding passing between them. Then, the two men were out the door, leaving the sisters alone with their swirling thoughts.
Rain sighed heavily, rubbing her temples as the tension between her and Bella thickened. Bella turned to her with a stern expression, her voice demanding, "Answers. Now." Rain groaned, clearly irritated. "Not right now, Bella," she replied, dragging herself over to the couch and collapsing onto it, trying to rest her head.
But Bella wasn't letting this go. She stormed over to her sister, her patience worn thin. "Now! Rain! What did Laurent mean by 'siren'?"
Rain pinched the bridge of her nose, exasperated. With a sarcastic wave of her hands, she muttered, "Ta-da," as if the word alone explained everything. Bella wasn't amused. "What the hell, Rain? Sirens aren't real! That's just some myth, a fairy tale! Do you expect me to believe that?"
Rain glanced at Bella with a mix of humor and annoyance, looking down at her own hand and arm as if the answer lay there. "Holy shit, look at that. I am real," she replied, her tone dripping with sarcasm. Bella's irritation only grew. "Rain, stop with your humor and answer me. What are you?" she demanded, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and confusion.
Sitting up, Rain met Bella's gaze with a deadpan expression. "Well, I'm not a unicorn." That did it. Bella erupted, her voice rising as she paced the room. "This isn't a joke, Rain! You can't just drop something like that on me and expect me to brush it off! Sirens? Are you serious? Prove it! Show me what you are, because right now, all I'm hearing is a bunch of nonsense!" Rain's expression hardened, the playful sarcasm fading from her face. "Are you serious? Bella, I ran faster than humanly possible, and I have the same bloody strength as a vampire. What more proof do you want?"
Bella wasn't satisfied. "Those don't mean anything! For all I know, you could be hiding something else! If you're really a siren, show me. Prove it to me!"
Rain's patience snapped. With a frustrated sigh, she stood up and walked to the kitchen, grabbing a glass and filling it with water. Bella watched her, confusion written all over her face as Rain retrieved a container of sea salt from the cabinet. Returning to the living room, Rain sat back down on the couch, mixing the salt into the water with a practiced hand.
Bella watched, her eyes narrowing as Rain placed her hand on the table and clenched her teeth, bracing herself. Without hesitation, Rain poured the salted water over her hand, and immediately, she winced in pain from the burning sensation as her hand began to change. The skin darkened, becoming slick and almost scaly, her fingers elongating into sharp, webbed claws that looked nothing like a human's. The transformation was both eerie and mesmerizing, and as the change completed, Rain's hand resembled something out of a nightmare.
Rain groaned, the pain evident in her voice as her hand slowly reverted to its normal form. She looked at Bella, who stood frozen, her face a mixture of shock and something elseβsomething Rain had feared seeing.
"Don't give me that look," Rain said, her voice laced with bitterness.
Bella's eyes darted away, her voice trembling as she spoke softly, "What look?"
Rain's anger flared, her eyes narrowing as she stared at her sister. "The look of fear as though you see me as a monster." The words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of unspoken fears and the chasm that had suddenly formed between them.
Bella's eyes flared with a mix of fear and accusation. "Well, your kind eat people, Rain. You drown them in the sea. Of course you are a monster."
Rain's expression hardened as she began to chuckle, though there was no humor in it. "Are you serious? Sorry to burst your bubble, but my diet doesn't include humans. It's mainly fishβor shark if I'm feeling fancy. We only kill or drown people if they invade our territory or try to kill us first. Because, Bella, in the water, it's either you kill or I kill. It's survival."
Bella's face twisted in disgust. "That doesn't make you any less of a monster. You still kill. That's what monsters do!"
Rain's temper flared, her voice rising. "And what about your precious vampires, Bella? They attack humans, they kill them, they drain them dry, but somehow they get a free pass? How's that fair? How are they any better than me?"
"That's not fair, Rain!" Bella shot back, her voice trembling with emotion. "The Cullens don't kill people! They're differentβthey choose not to! They're trying to be better!"
"Better?" Rain scoffed, her eyes flashing with anger. "Tell that to my family, Bella. They were killed by vampiresβslaughtered like animals. They didn't get the luxury of meeting the 'good' ones like you did. They didn't get the choice to live. So don't you dare talk to me about fairness."
Bella's face reddened with fury as she retorted, "I'm sorry about your family, Rain, but that doesn't change the fact that you're not like them. You're not humanβyou're a siren, and you're dangerous!"
Rain felt a pang of hurt but refused to let it show. "You're right, Bella, I'm not human. But that didn't stop me from being there for you, did it? When Edward left, I was the one who stayed up all night, losing sleep to make sure you were okay. I was the one who picked up the pieces when you fell apart. But it seems all you care about is the vampiresβyour precious Cullens. They mean more to you than Charlie and I ever will, don't they?"
Bella's eyes blazed with a mixture of guilt and anger. "You're twisting this, Rain! That's not true!"
Rain's voice trembled with the weight of her own pain as she spat back, "Isn't it? You're so quick to judge me, to call me a monster, but you never questioned the vampires. You never hesitated to trust them, to see the good in them. But me? You see one glimpse of what I am, and suddenly I'm a threat, someone to be feared and hated."
The room was filled with heavy silence, both sisters breathing hard from the intensity of their argument. Bella's eyes welled up with tears, and she struggled to find the right words. But instead, the words that came out were cold and cutting, "Maybe you should've joined your family."
Rain's heart shattered at those words, the sting of them cutting deeper than any physical wound. Her face fell, and she looked away, unable to meet Bella's eyes.Β Bella's breath caught in her throat, the realization of her words hitting her like a ton of bricks. But before she could apologize or take them back, Rain turned and walked out of the door, leaving Bella standing there, alone with the weight of her own guilt.
