My heart is pierced by Cupid

๐•‹โ„๐”ผ sky had begun to darken into hues of deep indigo, stars just starting to prick through the twilight veil. The ocean murmured softly in the distance, waves kissing the shore in a lullaby that had been sung for millennia. Rain and Donna walked side by side, their laughter mingling with the distant call of gulls.

Donna's hand was wrapped in Rain's, her pale fingers interlaced with her sister's. Her smile was small but genuine, her eyes alight with something soft and wistful as she took in the distant lights of the homes scattered along the coastline. "So, this is why you love it here," Donna said softly, her voice carrying on the breeze. "The food and the company."

Rain looked at her sister, her smile warm and wide. "Something like that, sister."

Donna's lips twitched into a small grin, her head tilting slightly as her long, damp hair caught the faint glow of the streetlights. Behind them, the wolf pack lingered Erian among them, his eyes never straying far from Rain. They laughed and talked amongst themselves, the kind of carefree chatter that only came from people who trusted one another implicitly. Rain unlocked her Jeep, her fingers brushing against the cold metal of the door handle. "Charlie's going to love you, Donna. You'll see. He's kind and gentle... and he makes the best pancakes well he tries."

Donna chuckled, her laugh like the chime of sea glass. But before she could reply, her bare feet brushed against a shallow puddle of ocean water left behind by the receding tide.

The reaction was instant.

A sharp, guttural scream tore from Donna's throat as her body arched violently. Her skin shimmered with faint iridescence, her nails sharpening as her siren instincts tried to rise unbidden.

"Donna!" Rain's voice cracked as she caught her sister before she could fall. Her heart hammered in her chest as she lowered Donna to her knees.ย

But Donna's wide, glassy eyes weren't focused on Rainโ€”they were staring past her, over her shoulder. Rain turned, her breath freezing in her lungs.

A group of fishermen stood at the edge of the parking lot, their faces illuminated by the flickering glow of a streetlamp. Their weathered faces were pale, eyes wide with something between awe and terror. "I told you!" one of them rasped, his voice shaking. "They're real!"

Rain's breath hitched. Her arms tightened protectively around Donna as the men took hesitant steps forward, their boots scraping against gravel and sand. The leaderโ€”a man with greying hair and a scar running across his cheekโ€”held a trembling hand toward Donna as though she were an animal ready to strike.

"We have to get rid of them before they kill us all!" he said, pulling a pistol from his coat pocket.

The wolves reacted instantly.

Paul and Embry stepped in front of the two sisters, their forms tense and vibrating with suppressed fury. Erian was by Rain's side in an instant, his teeth bared in a snarl as he positioned himself between her and the fishermen.

"Put the gun down!" Erian shouted, his voice echoing across the empty lot.

But the fisherman's hand shook violently, his knuckles white around the gun's grip. "You don't understandโ€”they aren't human! They'll drag you into the deep and devour you!"

"No one's devouring anyone!" Paul barked, his voice sharp and edged with authority.

But Rain could feel itโ€”the fragile thread tethering this moment together was unravelling, one thread at a time. The fear in the fisherman's eyes had turned to something wild and desperate. The sound of the waves. The distant cry of gulls. The faint crackle of the bonfire behind them.

Thenโ€”

Bang.

Donna looked down as she held her stomach and began to fall but Rain caught her

Donna's breath hitched, a sharp, fragile sound cutting through the cold night air. Her wide eyes drifted downward, her trembling hand pressing against her stomach. Crimson bloomed across her pale skin, spreading like ink spilled on fragile parchment.

Her knees buckled.

"No!" Rain's voice cracked as she lunged forward, catching her sister before she hit the cold gravel. Donna's weight collapsed into Rain's arms, and for a moment, everything felt so impossibly still.

The fishermen froze, their faces painted with horror as they realized what had been done. Then, like shadows scattering before dawn, they turned and ranโ€”boots pounding against wet sand and asphalt, disappearing into the night without a second glance.

Rain's hands trembled as they pressed against the wound on Donna's stomach, the warmth of her sister's blood pooling between her fingers.

"No, no, no... Donna, stay with me! Please!" Rain's voice trembled with panic as she shook her head, tears already streaming down her face. Donna's lips parted, a faint sound escaping her throat, but her eyesโ€”those luminous, sea-glass eyesโ€”were locked on Rain's face, soft and trusting despite the pain etched across her features. "Help..." Rain's voice broke as she looked around, but the pack was frozen, their eyes wide with shock and grief.

With a strangled cry, Rain shifted, hooking one arm under Donna's legs and the other around her back. She stood, Donna cradled against her chest, her sister's blood staining her clothes, her skin, everything.

Her feet moved before she could thinkโ€”running, stumbling, gasping for air as she sprinted across gravel and pavement. Her legs burned, her lungs screamed, but all Rain could hear was the faint, fragile sound of Donna's shallow breathing against her neck.

"Stay with me, Donna," Rain whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of her terror. "You're going to be okay. Just stay awake. Please..." The hospital lights came into view, glaring and sterile against the dark night sky. Rain's voice broke into a raw, guttural scream as she burst through the sliding glass doors, Donna limp in her arms.

"HELP! Please, someone help!"

Nurses and doctors turned, eyes widening at the sight before themโ€”a girl, drenched in saltwater and blood, clutching another girl who was deathly pale and motionless. A gurney was rushed forward, hands reaching, voices shouting, but Rain wouldn't let go. "You have to save her!" Rain sobbed, clutching Donna tighter as hands tried to pry her away. "Miss, please! We need to take her now!" a nurse said, her voice firm yet gentle.

Rain's knees buckled, her body finally giving way to exhaustion and grief as Donna was taken from her arms. The cold linoleum of the hospital floor pressed against her knees as she watched her sister disappear behind sterile white doors, surrounded by doctors and bright, blinding lights.

The world seemed to dim around her, her breaths coming in shallow gasps as the scent of Donna's blood clung to her skin, her clothesโ€”everywhere.

Erian burst through the doors moments later, his eyes wild as they locked onto Rain. Without a word, he knelt in front of her, pulling her into his arms.

Rain collapsed against him, her shoulders shaking as her grief spilled out in heaving sobs.

"She'sย  going to be okay," Erian whispered, his voice cracking as he held her tightly. "She will." But Rain couldn't answer. All she could do was press her bloodstained hands against her face, her body trembling as the world around her became nothing but the sterile hum of fluorescent lights and the faint, echoing sound of her sister's fading heartbeat in her ears.

เผ„.ยฐ

The sterile glow of fluorescent lights painted everything in pale hues of white and blue. The soft, rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor filled the silence, a fragile sound barely holding Rain together as she sat beside her sister's hospital bed.

Donna lay still, her face pale against the stark whiteness of the pillow. Her hair, usually wild and flowing like ocean waves, was damp and clinging to her cheeks. Wires and tubes snaked around her, keeping her tethered to the fragile thread of life.

Rain's hands, still stained with her sister's blood, trembled slightly as they held Donna's limp hand. Her thumb brushed over the cool skin, over knuckles and fingers that once danced in the moonlit ocean with her. The scent of blood still lingered in the airโ€”a cruel reminder of the night that had torn through their world like a violent storm.

The door creaked open softly, and Bella stepped inside. Edward remained just outside, his figure a shadow framed by the harsh light of the hallway. Bella hesitated for a moment before she spoke, her voice soft and cautious.

"Rain... are you okay?"

Silence answered her.

Rain didn't look up, her gaze fixed on Donna's peaceful, sleeping face. Bella shifted uncomfortably, her fingers curling around the strap of her bag as if searching for something to anchor herself. "Iโ€”" Bella started, but the weight of the silence pressed against her chest, making it hard to breathe. She sighed softly and turned, walking out of the room with her head down, leaving Rain alone with the fragile sound of Donna's heart monitor.

But Rain's mind was far from the stillness of the room. It was an ocean in a stormโ€”waves of guilt and fury crashing over her, pulling her into an abyss she couldn't escape.

The fishermen's faces flashed in her mindโ€”the glint of the gun, the sneers of fear and hatred, the moment Donna's body went limp in her arms. The legends... the stories of her kind, twisted and retold by trembling lips over flickering campfires. Monsters. Sirens. Hunters of men. Creatures of beauty and death. And yet... she had let herself become something else. Something softer. Weaker. A creature of warm smiles and laughter by the firelight. A girl who fell in love with a boy with kind eyes and a gentle heart. She became human.

"You're a siren, so be one."

Donna's voice echoed in her mind, sharp and unyielding.

Rain's jaw clenched as her eyes burned with unshed tears. Slowly, she leaned forward, pressing a gentle kiss to Donna's forehead.

"Rest, sister," she whispered, her voice breaking softly.

The door creaked open again, and Leah stepped inside hesitantly. Her sharp eyes softened at the sight of Donna in the bed and Rain's grief etched into every line of her face. "I thought I could... watch over her for a while," Leah said softly, her voice uncharacteristically gentle. Rain looked at her for a long moment before giving a faint nod. She rose from her chair, her movements slow and deliberate, as though she was afraid of shattering the fragile quiet of the room.

Without another word, Rain walked past Leah, her eyes distant and cold.

Bella was waiting outside, her expression a mixture of concern and confusion. "Rainโ€”" she started, but Rain walked past her without pause, without a glance. Edward shifted, his brows knitting together as he glanced between Bella and Rain. Erian was there too, stepping forward as if to reach for her hand, but he stopped short when he caught the look in her eyesโ€”frozen and storm-grey, like the ocean before it swallows a ship whole.

"Rain, where are you going?" Erian asked softly, his voice careful as he felt in his heart what hers held, he felt anger.

But Rain didn't answer.

She pushed open the hospital doors and stepped out into the night air. The sharp bite of the cold wind hit her skin, but she welcomed itโ€”it felt cleaner than the stifling scent of antiseptic and blood inside.

Her bare feet hit the pavement, her steps deliberate and heavy with purpose. The night wrapped around her like a dark cloak, the faint sound of waves crashing against the distant shore calling to her, pulling her back to where she belonged.

The world around her blurred voices faded, lights dimmed. All that remained was the roaring sound of the ocean in her ears and the burning resolve in her chest.

"You're a siren, so be one."

And Rain intended to be just that.
