I disdain all glittering gold

The night was still, cloaked in a heavy quiet that only the ocean could break. The gentle whisper of waves lapping against the shore carried an eerie serenity, masking the danger lurking beneath the surface.ย
Inside a weathered boathouse, the faint scent of saltwater mingled with the tang of fish and damp wood. A lone fisherman moved methodically through the space, his hands working nets with practiced ease. The flicker of a single bulb cast long, shifting shadows on the walls, giving the space an almost otherworldly air.ย
He paused, his brow furrowing as a sound pierced the quietโa voice.ย
Soft and haunting, it drifted through the air like a ghostly melody, weaving its way into his mind. The song was unlike anything heโd ever heard, and it seemed to call to him, pulling at something deep within his chest.ย
Without realizing it, his hands stopped their work. The net fell to the floor as his feet moved of their own accord, drawn by the invisible thread of the song.ย
The voice grew louder, more alluring, as he stepped out into the moonlit night. His breath hitched as he saw herโa figure standing at the waterโs edge.ย
Rain.ย
She was a vision of deadly beauty, her dark hair catching the moonlight like threads of silk. Her eyes glimmered, cold and sharp, holding secrets too ancient to comprehend. Her posture was both graceful and predatory, her stillness betraying the storm within.ย
The fishermanโs heart pounded, his fear warring with the strange, intoxicating pull of her presence. He stumbled closer, unable to resist, as if she had cast a spell that bound him to her will.ย
Her lips parted slightly, her song fading into a chilling silence as he came to a stop before her. Her gaze pierced through him, and for a fleeting moment, he thought he saw sorrow in her eyesโsomething almost human.ย
But it was gone as quickly as it had appeared, replaced by a glint of something far darker.ย
Rain raised a hand, her fingers brushing against his cheek. Her touch was cold, like the oceanโs depths, and sent a shiver down his spine.ย
He barely had time to process the gesture before she moved.ย
In a blur of motion, she was behind him, her arm coiling around his neck like a serpent.
The fisherman gasped, his hands clawing at her unyielding grip, but it was no use. Rainโs strength was otherworldly, a reminder of what she truly was.ย His struggles grew weaker as the seconds stretched into eternity. Her face remained impassive, her eyes devoid of pity or hesitation. She tightened her hold, and with a sharp, sickening crack, his struggles ceased.ย
The fishermanโs lifeless body crumpled to the ground, his glassy eyes staring at nothing.ย
Rain stood over him, her chest rising and falling with deep, steady breaths. The moonlight illuminated her face, casting shadows that accentuated the cold fury etched into her features.ย
She didnโt look down at the man she had killed. Her gaze was fixed on the ocean, its endless expanse stretching out before her like a dark promise.ย Without a word, she stepped over the body, her bare feet leaving faint prints in the sand. The waves reached for her as she approached, lapping eagerly at her ankles as if welcoming her home.ย
Her song had ended, but the air was still thick with its lingering echoesโhaunting and beautiful, like the siren who sang it.ย
Rain disappeared into the water, her form swallowed by the waves, leaving only the dead man and the chilling memory of her voice behind.
The waves whispered softly against the hull of the fishing boat, a gentle lullaby in the vast darkness of the ocean night. A faint breeze carried the scent of salt and fish, mingling with the murmurs of the fishermen as they worked, pulling in the last of their nets. The night should have felt peaceful, yet a tension hung in the air, heavy and suffocating.
Their thoughts betrayed them, drifting back to the girlโno, the sirenโthey had shot. Some wore expressions of uneasy satisfaction, convincing themselves they had done what was necessary. Others felt a gnawing unease, as though they had awakened something they could not comprehend.
Then, it began.
A song.
It was haunting, a melody so exquisite it made their skin crawl with both fear and fascination. The voice seemed to rise from the depths of the ocean itself, weaving through the air like a specter. It was too late to resistโcuriosity had already taken root.
The captain, gripping the wheel tightly, felt his hands tremble as the boat began to drift, drawn by an unseen force. The waters guided them, inexorably pulling the vessel toward a shadowy cave that loomed ahead. Its jagged mouth yawned open, framed by scattered skulls and the wreckage of forgotten boats.
Whispers of the caveโs legend filled the minds of the fishermenโstories meant to frighten sailors into caution. They had laughed at those tales once. Now, as the boat slipped into the cavernโs ominous embrace, their laughter was a distant memory.
โMen, light the way!โ the captain barked, his voice laced with unease. Lanterns flared to life, casting flickering light on the wet, gleaming walls. Shadows danced like restless spirits, and the air felt thick with foreboding.
"Captain... something approaches," one of the men stammered, his voice trembling.
The lanterns swung toward the water. A figure emerged, rising slowly from the depths like a nightmare given form.
Rain.
Her hair clung to her pale face, obscuring her eyes, but her smileโunnatural, wide, and filled with maliceโwas unmistakable. Water dripped from her form as she floated just above the waves, her voice cutting through the silence.
โHello.โ
The word was laced with an unnatural power, the sound alone enough to send a shiver of terror down their spines. The captain's face twisted in horror, but he steeled himself, gripping his pistol.
โMen, kill her!โ he roared, though his voice betrayed his fear.
Before they could react, Rain began to sing again.
Her voice was no longer beautifulโit was raw, filled with rage and vengeance, resonating with the wrath of the ocean itself.
"Drown in your sorrow and fears.
Choke on your blood and your tears."
The waters beneath the boat churned violently, the once-gentle waves now rising with feral energy. The boat lurched, throwing men off their feet as chaos erupted.
Rainโs song grew louder, her words cutting through the screams like a blade.
"Bleed 'til you've run out of years.
We must do what it takes to survive."
Some men dropped their weapons, clutching their heads as if trying to block out the sound. Others turned on each other, their eyes glazed, compelled by her song to destroy. Blood sprayed across the deck as knives and hooks found flesh.
The captain struggled to maintain control, his shouts drowned out by the cacophony of screams and Rainโs relentless melody.
"Give up your honour and faith.
Live up your life as a wraith."
A colossal wave rose behind her, towering above the boat like a living beast. Rain rode its crest, her form illuminated by the lanternsโ flickering glow. She leapt from the wave with inhuman grace, landing on the deck with a sickening thud.
The spear-like shard of broken wood in her hand struck with deadly precision, impaling one man before she lunged at another. They tumbled overboard into the roiling sea, his struggles silenced as Rain dragged him beneath the waves.
The screams echoed through the cavern, only to be swallowed by the final verse of her song.
"Die in the blood where you bathe.
We must do what it takes to survive."
When the last note faded, an eerie silence fell. The deck was littered with bodies, the lanterns casting a hellish glow on the blood-soaked wood. Rain stood amidst the carnage, her chest heaving, her face expressionless as she stepped over the fallen men.
She made her way to the control room, where the captain cowered. The door shattered under her strength, splintering inward as she entered.
โStay back!โ he screamed, fumbling for his gun. He raised it with shaking hands, but Rain was faster.
In an instant, she was upon him, her hand snapping his arm with a sickening crack. The gun fell to the floor as the captain let out a wail of agony.
โPlease,โ he begged, tears streaming down his face. โYou donโt have to do this.โ
Rain tilted her head, her eyes meeting his. They were cold, empty, devoid of mercy.
โYeah. I do,โ she whispered, her voice steady and chilling.
She picked up the gun, aiming it with precision, and pulled the trigger. The captain fell, clutching his chest as blood poured from the wound. Rain let the weapon slip from her hand, the splash as it hit the water below echoing in the silent cave.
She turned, stepping over the dying man without a second glance, and dove back into the sea.
The waters embraced her, pulling her back into their depths, leaving the boat and its grim cargo behind.
