πΌππΌβππβ gripped the steering wheel tightly, her knuckles turning white as she focused on the road ahead. The wind howled through the broken windows of the ambulance, the scent of damp earth and aged decay seeping into the vehicle like an uninvited presence. The tension in the air was thick, almost suffocating, as if the weight of what they had just experienced was pressing down on them all at once.
Nick sat between her and Jenny, still catching his breath, while Jenny clutched the dagger with a grip so tight her knuckles had gone pale. Silence stretched between them, the only sound the distant rumble of thunder in the night sky.
Then, Everlyn finally spoke.
"What... You're saying that he brought that plane down there? On purpose?" Her voice wavered slightly, disbelief evident in every syllable as she flicked her gaze between the road and Jenny.
Jenny met her eyes, something unreadableβyet unsettlingβglimmering in her expression. "That's why he wanted you to come to the church."
Everlyn narrowed her eyes. "He wanted me to go to the church?" She let out a short, humourless laugh. "I told you that IΒ wanted to go to the church."
Jenny shook her head slightly, her expression unchanging.
Everlyn's grip on the wheel tightened as she continued, her voice rising with frustration. "I told you, I said I wanted to see... I wanted to see his corpse." Nick, who had been silent until now, turned to look at her, his eyes wide with alarm. "...See his corpse?" he repeated, the weight of those words settling in the space between them like an anchor.
Everlyn opened her mouth but faltered, looking between the two of them, a creeping sense of unease curling in her stomach like a snake coiling around her spine.
Jenny's voice was steady, serious. "Everlyn... he's in your head."
A chill crawled up Everlyn's spine, but she immediately shook her head, a defensive scoff escaping her lips. "What are you talking about? That'sβThat's ridiculousβBecause I..."
Her breath hitched, and before she could finish her sentence, something inside her snapped.
Her foot slammed on the brakes.
The tires screeched violently against the wet pavement, jerking them all forward in their seats. Nick braced against the dashboard with a curse, Jenny clutching onto the door handle. The air inside the ambulance was thick with shock as all three of them turned their heads forwardβ
βAnd froze.
The fog ahead of them swirled, thick and ghostly, moving like a living entity of its own. And through it, emerging with slow, measured steps, was him.
Ahmanis.
His tall, dark silhouette cut through the mist like a shadow peeling itself away from the night. His dark eyes glowed, his expression unreadable yet filled with an unearthly knowing. The smirk playing at his lips sent ice into Everlyn's veins.
Nick was the first to break the silence.
"...You drove us back to your boyfriend," he said, voice laced with dry horror.
Everlyn's heart plunged into her stomach. A sharp breath escaped her lips, realization hitting her like a freight train.
"Oh my God," she whispered. "He's in my head."
Without wasting another second, she threw the gearshift into reverse. The ambulance lurched backward, tires squealing as she attempted to get as much distance between them and Ahmanis as possible. But in her panic, her foot pressed too hard. The vehicle slammed straight into a crumbling stone wall behind them.
Nick and Jenny yelped as the impact rattled through the ambulance, but Everlyn barely had time to register the pain shooting up her spine before she yanked the gearshift forward and gunned it.
The tires screeched as the vehicle peeled away, heading straight into the forest. The trees blurred past them in a dark haze, their branches reaching out like skeletal fingers in the night.
"Go, go, go!" Jenny screamed.
Everlyn clenched her jaw, eyes darting to the rearview mirrorβonly to see Ahmanis still standing there, his expression unbothered, his glowing eyes watching them with eerie patience.
A sudden thump against the window.
Everlyn gasped, jerking the wheel slightly as a mummy slammed against the glass.
The rotting creature clawed wildly at the window, its tattered wrappings flailing in the wind, its hollow sockets staring at Everlyn with a hunger that made her skin crawl. Its broken teeth gnashed together as it tried to reach inside. Nick, acting on pure instinct, grabbed a nearby metal rod and slammed it against the mummy's face. The creature reeled back from the force but didn't fall away. Instead, it let out a guttural snarl and pressed forward again, its fingers curling through the broken windshield.
Everlyn's foot pressed down harder on the gas, the trees blurring past at an alarming speed. She swerved slightly to avoid a large root, but the sudden movement caused the mummy to lurch forwardβ
Its top half ripped from its lower body and tumbled into the front seat.
Right onto Everlyn.
Everlyn let out an ear-splitting scream, frantically thrashing against the rotting corpse as its bony fingers flailed in her lap.
"Get it off me!" she shrieked.
Nick, now half-horrified and half-hysterical, grabbed the flailing torso and threw it out the shattered windshield. "Not today, Satan!" Everlyn, still shaking, let out a strangled breath and gritted her teeth. "This is so far above my pay grade," she muttered before gripping the wheel and refocusing on the road. Jenny, still holding the dagger, turned to Nick with wide eyes. "What the hell just happened?!" Nick exhaled sharply, shaking his head. "Everlyn's boyfriend happened," he grumbled.
Everlyn shot him a glare. "Not my boyfriend!"
Another low growl echoed from somewhere in the fog behind them, the sound sending shivers down all their spines.
"...Can we please just make it out of here alive first?" Jenny muttered.
Everlyn didn't need to be told twice. She pressed her foot all the way down, sending the ambulance tearing through the darkness.
Just when Everlyn thought they had a moment to breathe, another thud echoed across the windshield.
Before she could react, a second mummy slammed itself against the hood, its grotesque, decayed face pressing against the glass with a sickening scrape. Its hollow sockets seemed to bore into her soul before it let out a guttural snarl and lunged. "Oh, come on!" Everlyn yelled, yanking the wheel as the creature crashed through the already fractured windshield.
Before she could react, its bony, wrapped hands latched onto her, clawing at her shoulders as it tried to drag her forward. Everlyn struggled, her grip on the wheel slipping as the mummy's strength nearly yanked her out of the driver's seat. Nick, acting fast, grabbed Everlyn's waist, pulling her back while Jennyβpanicked but trying to helpβbegan kicking wildly at the creature.
Only... she wasn't actually kicking the mummy.
She was kicking Everlyn.
"That's my face! That's my face!" Everlyn shouted, her head jerking back from each impact.
Jenny, horrified, yelped, "Sorry!"
Everlyn, fuelled by adrenaline and irritation, punched the mummy square in the face, sending it stumbling backward with a dry, wheezing groan. Taking the opportunity, Jenny tried to kick it away againβ
But this time, the mummy caught her ankle.
Jenny let out a sharp gasp as she was suddenly yanked forward. Her hands shot out, grabbing onto her seatbelt in a desperate attempt to anchor herself.
"Nick!" she cried out.
Nick, seeing her struggle, gritted his teeth and swung his fist as hard as he could. His knuckles connected with the creature's temple, making a sickening crack. The force of the punch sent the mummy flying back, its grip loosening just enough for Everlyn and Nick to yank Jenny back inside the vehicle. Breathless, Jenny fumbled with her seatbelt, clicking it into place with trembling hands. The mummy, undeterred, clawed its way back onto the hood, its tattered wraps flailing in the wind. This time, it didn't go for themβit grabbed the steering wheel.
Everlyn's eyes widened.
"Oh, hell noβ"
She fought to keep control, wrestling with the creature as it yanked the wheel violently to the side. The vehicle swerved uncontrollably, tires screeching against the muddy terrain.
The world outside became a blur of trees and darkness, the headlights flickering wildly.
Thenβ
The ground beneath them vanished.
Gravity seized them as the ambulance went airborneβthen tumbled.
All three of them screamed as the vehicle flipped end over end, the impact sending them crashing into the roof, then the seats, then the sides. Metal groaned. Glass shattered. The world spun. Everlyn barely had time to register what was happening before the door beside her flung open, and suddenlyβ
She was falling.
Jenny and Nick's screams followed her as she tumbled violently out of the ambulance, her body slamming into the rough earth. The force sent her rolling, dirt and debris scraping against her skin. Her world blurred into a whirlwind of pain and disorientation before her head collided hard against the ground.
Stars exploded behind her eyelids.
Distantly, she could hear the ambulance continue its descentβflipping, crashing, until finally a deafening boom. Everlyn barely managed to lift her head, her vision swimming as she caught a glimpse of the ambulance now lying upside-down, steam rising from the wreckage. Nick groaned as he pried himself free from the wreckage of the overturned ambulance, shards of glass crunching beneath him as he crawled out. His body ached, and his vision swam from the impact, but his mind screamed at him to move.
"Jenny! Jenny!" he called out, stumbling towards the other side of the wreck.
A muffled groan came from inside before Jenny's hand pushed against the broken door, forcing it open.
"Nick!" Jenny gasped, eyes wide in panic.
Nick reached out, gripping her arm and helping her out of the crumpled vehicle. But before he could ask if she was okay, she suddenly grabbed his sleeve, her expression shifting from panic to alarm.
"Nick! Look!" she exclaimed, pointing beyond the smoke and wreckage.
Nick turned his head, heart pounding.
Through the dense fog and flickering headlights, a shadow moved with an eerie calm.
Ahmanis.
He approached with slow, deliberate steps, his golden armor catching the pale moonlight. His hollow, ancient eyes were locked onto one thingβEverlyn.
Nick clenched his jaw. His muscles burned, but adrenaline pushed him forward. He would not let that undead bastard take her.
With a glance around, he spotted a thick wooden branch lying near the wreckage. He grabbed it with both hands and turned toward Ahmanis, stepping between him and Everlyn. "Come on then, you ancient corpse!" Nick growled, tightening his grip on the branch.
Behind him, Jenny clapped her hands together in support.
"Yeah! Get him, Nick! Get him! Kick his ass!"
Emboldened by her words, Nick raised the branch and swung it with all his strengthβ
But before the wood could make contact, Ahmanis's hand shot up, impossibly fast.
Nick barely had time to react before he was grabbed by his shirt. His body was yanked into the air as if he were weightless, the impact of unseen power hurling him backward.
He crashed through the thick branches of the towering trees, snapping them as he tumbled before slamming into the cold, hard earth with a painful thud. His breath hitched, stars bursting behind his eyes. His limbs twitched as he groaned in pain.
Ahmanis didn't spare him another glance. His focus remained solely on Everlyn.
The fallen woman lay sprawled across the dirt, her chest rising and falling in shallow breaths. Blood trickled from a small but deep wound on her forehead where she had hit her head. Her eyelids fluttered, struggling to stay open.
Ahmanis knelt beside her, reaching out with an almost gentle touch. His fingers brushed against her face, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
His cold, undead gaze softened.
For a moment, there was no malice. No monstrous presence. Just an ancient sorrow buried beneath centuries of darkness.
Leaning down, he pressed a lingering kiss to her forehead. Everlyn barely stirred, her breath hitching as her consciousness faded in and out. Ahmanis's arms slid beneath her, ready to lift her from the ground, however, sharp, metallic sound cut through the air. Ahmanis's body jerked suddenly as a steel cable shot through him, impaling his chest. His eyes widened in shock before he was yanked backward with brutal force.
Everlyn gasped weakly, barely able to register what was happening before more metal claws fired from the trees, sinking into Ahmanis's body and holding him in place.
A dark silhouette emerged through the mist. Then another. And another.
Armed men.
Agents.
They surrounded Ahmanis, their movements precise and cold. Ahmanis let out a snarl, tearing the first dart from his body. He examined it, his fury growing. But before he could react, more launched at him in quick succession, embedding into his flesh.
Then came the chains.
More metal claws shot from the darkness, piercing his limbs and torso, locking him down like a caged beast. Ahmanis let out a bloodcurdling scream as the bindings tightened, restricting his power, pulling him toward the earth.
Everlyn, still barely conscious, forced her trembling fingers to curl into the dirt.
She heard him.
Through the haze of pain, through the black spots in her vision, she heard his voiceβdeep, raw, filled with something almost human.
"Everlyn!"
She tried to move.
She had to move.
But her strength was gone.
And thenβ
Nothing.
