Upon his birth, Hera was so repulsed by Hephaestus' appearance and ashamed of his imperfection that she herself cast him out. The fall gravely injured Hephaestus, but Thetis and Eurynome rescued him, providing refuge in an underwater cave for nine years.
In time, Hephaestus sought vengeance. He crafted a golden throne so exquisite that Hera immediately accepted it. Yet, as soon as she sat, she became ensnared by the numerous, intricately designed cords that only their maker could see. Various deities attempted to convince Hephaestus to release Hera, offering him a place on Olympus as a reward. Nonetheless, he remained unforgiving and only liberated his mother after Dionysus intoxicated him.
