sebastian cyrus was worried about his daughter. ever since jeff atkins passed away, maeve has been completely devastated. which she had a point to be, she had just lost her boyfriend who also happens to be the father of her child.
maeve has been missing so many days from school. liberty high only granted her a week off since the tragic incident, but it's been a little over a month now and she has only been back to school once. the school called sebastian cyrus this morning, alerting him that although they understand the situation, maeve has to come back tomorrow. if not she will be lawfully withdraw from liberty high school.
sebastian cyrus certainly did not want that to happen, so the school asked him to come down to pick up all of her missing assignments.
"here is all of the work maeve has missed throughout the course she has been away." miss douglas, the secretary of the office says a she places a course load of work onto the counter.
sebastian let out a heavy sigh as he glances at the stack of work. miss douglas then pulls out a sheet of paper and places it in front of sebastian. "what is it?" he asks.
"daily report. since maeve has missed a month and a half of school. she will be on attendance alert starting tomorrow." she explains.
"attendance alert? what is that?" sebastian questions.
"maeve needs to make sure she is marked present by all of her teachers, and the first two weeks, they have to note her participation." she continued to explain.
sebastian took the paper in his hand and looked over it, it had all of maeve's teachers. he nodded towards miss. douglas. "okay, i'll make sure she gets this. thank you."
as sebastian exits the schools, he looks over at a student who looked like they were about to ditch school. sebastian narrowed his eyes to get a better look, the student wasn't just any student, it was justin foley; one of maeve's closest friends.
"justin!" sebastian calls out with the pile of papers and books in his left hand.
justin foley thought he was caught, he stood frozen in place. he sighed heavily before turning around, expecting to see mr. porterβ who he had just finished talking to. but he was surprised to see maeve's father. justin cleared his throat, before speaking, "oh, hey mr. cyrus!" he let out a dry chuckle.
sebastian had manage to catch up to him, he held out his right hand towards himβ a way to greet him. "how are you doing, bud?"
justin didn't hesitate to shake his hand. he has met mr. cyrus a hand full of times. that being because he's been paired with maeve during group projects and they would work on it at her house. "i'mβ i'm doing good." he smiles trying to hide the fact he was about to ditch school.
sebastian nodded. "goodβ that's good to hear."
justin noticed all of the textbooks and what seemed like class work in his hand. he knew they had to be for maeve, she hadn't been to school since jeff died. well, only once, but he know how that went... and it wasn't good. he started feeling guilty for not checking up on her. "how's maeve doing? i haven't seen her around."
sebastian sighs. "you know there's some days where she's doing better." he nods. "and there's days like today, where she's just..." sebastian couldn't finish his sentence. there was no word to describe what his daughter was going though or feeling.
justin nodded in understanding. "yeah, i-i can't imagine what she's going through. it must be so hard for her."
that's an understatement, sebastian thought to himself. "you should come over sometime" he starts off. "i'm sure it would do her a lot of good to see a familiar face." he suggests.
justin felt like an asshole. he's been wrapped around these stupid tapes that he hasn't even bother to check on the girl he once used to have a big crush on. he nodded towards mr. cyrus, "yeahβyeah of course. i'll see if i can drop off later today. i do miss her."
sebastian send him a grateful smile. "thank you. alright, well i have to get going, i have to drop these off to her and head to work. take it easy, bud. if you ever need anything, you know we have your back." he clasped his shoulder, before walking past him towards his car.
justin foley kept his promise to sebastian cyrus. the sixteen year old was outside of the cyrus household. he didn't know what to expect when seeing maeve, but he hoped that she was hopefully doing better than earlier today, from what mr. cyrus told him.
he sighs heavily, before knocking three times on their front door. justin knew mr. cyrus would be at work, but he didn't know about maeve's stepmother, destiny reid.
after a few minutes, he was tempted to knock again since nobody answered the first time. but just as he lifted his fist, the door opened revealing a very dressed up maeve cyrus. his eyebrows rose in surprised, but then furrows when he noticed she had been crying. her blue eyes were trying their hardest not to release the tears threatening to spill. even with makeup on, justin could see her stained cheeks.
justin nor maeve said a word. instead, justin immediately pulled her in for a hug. maeve did not hesitate to hug back. maeve was grateful to see a familiar face. especially, a familiar face who not only was her best friend, but he also happened to be friends with jeff atkins.
both teens stood their embracing each other in their arms, for quite awhile. it wasn't awkward, but rather comforting. justin was the first to break the silence, "i'm sorry it took me so long to come and see you." he admitted.
it was true. the last time justin foley saw maeve was a week after jeff atkins had passed away. he recalled that day so vividly. but seeing her now, all he can think about was the night of the accident. he was the one that told her, jeff atkins had gotten into an accident. the image of her reaction to this day, is burned into his memory.
"it's okay." maeve replied as she pulls away from him. she blinked away her tears, before clearing her throat. "come in." she said with a small smile.
as justin stepped into the house he turned to look at her. she was still as beautiful as he remembered. maeve was dressed in a beige floerns sleeveless bodycon maxi tank dress, paired with her white low top chuck taylor converses. "did i come at a bad time?" he questions. wondering if she was heading out.
"umm, kinda" she let out a dry chuckle as she takes a seat on the couch, opposite from justin. "i have to leave for a doctor's appointment in a few minutes."
justin nodded. "is it for you or the baby?"
"the baby." maeve replied. "since jeff...i haven't been able to go back."
justin furrows his brows, "how come?"
maeve sighs. "the day after jessica's party, i had a scheduled appointment where jeff and i were supposed to find out if we were having a boy or a girl." she admitted "and since heβ... i just haven't gone." maeve felt the tears trickle up "it doesn't feel right to find out without him." a forced chuckle left her lips. "before you knocked, i was hesitating to call and cancel."
even from across the living room, justin could see the tears threatening to leave her eyes. he got up from the other side of the couch and walked over to sit next to her. he took a hold of her left hand, "i understand. but i know that jeff would want you to go." justin smiled softly at a memory that came to his mind. "i remember that night of the party...he was so excited for that appointment. he told me he had a big feeling it was gonna be a boy, but i told him he looked more like a girl dad." he smiled softly.
a small smile curved her lips, "i told him that too" she chuckles slightly
they grew quiet. jeff atkins was a sensitive topic to bring up around maeve. her parents would rarely bring him up, they were afraid of how she would react. grief was taking a toll on maeve, and they didn't know how to help her.
"you should go, maeve." justin spoke up in a whisper
maeve looked over to him, he was already staring at her. "i-i don't know if i can." she admitted as a tear fell from her eye.
"yes you can." he sighs. "if you don't want to go alone, i will be there for you." he admitted. truth be told, justin foley felt guilty. just like someone very close to the both of them.
"you would come with me?" she asked
justin nodded. "i will, if that's what you need."
