The Band Geek and The Choir Nerd // Chapter Five

Status: Edited

// Johnny's Point Of View //

All day at school, I couldn't focus but it got worse on the way to Choir. I bumped into a blond boy and he picked up my things, scrambling to apologise and make it up to me. He was really sweet but it hurt when he asked if I was new, he didn't know me. But I knew who he was, I may be quiet but I observe everything that goes on in that school. That boy was Ponyboy Curtis, one of the fastest members of the track team and prized drummer in that band class of his.

He probably won't ever talk to me again though, he probably wasn't even really sorry, yet he tried to make it up to me. A popular kid like him shouldn't be seen with someone like me, I'm a loner I could ruin his reputation if he's seen with me, that's why I walked off. I sit on my bed and stare out the window, it was nice outside, a good day to go draw something at the park. Reaching under the bed, I pull out my sketch book and a few drawing utensils and stand up. My parents weren't home at the moment so I could just leave.

I stuff the book and things into my bag and swing it over my shoulder, leaving the house as quick as possible. The park was right by the school, only a few minutes by foot. As soon as I reach the park, I sit on the bench where I usually sit and face the big willow tree there. Grabbing out my sketch book and a pencil, I open up to the first clean page and start something the willow tree. It was quiet and no one was in sight that I knew of.

I started humming a song piece quietly while drawing before I start mumbling the words. The song was my favorite and I always listened to it when I could. I continue to sketch and look up every few seconds to see the details of the tree I missed. The breeze blew and I pushed my glasses up further and use a hand to fix my beanie. Taking a deep breath, I close my eyes for a second and start singing quietly.

"When I was a kid, I used to buy and sell gravity. I knew how to fly and I would teach you for a fee. Broke every window in my hotel heart. I was only five years old, the twelve years scar. But I'd hear the same voice echo in my mind, see son you've got an angel to chase the devil at night," I sing quietly, just in case someone was nearby.

I looked up quickly for a moment and I caught a glimpse of a boys face, it was him, the boy i had on my mind. Our eyes met for a second and he jumped back behind the tree to hide. I stopped singing almost immediately and my confidence was gone, replaced by embarrassment. My face heated up slightly and I put my sketch book don. It was quiet for a moment before anything happened.

"Could you please come out and tell me why you were spying on me," I asked softly.

He walks out from behind the tree shyly and looks at his feet. He was just as embarrassed as I was, that's hard to do. I was embarrassed about everything I did, what I looked like or how I sounded. He walked up to me and stood there fiddling with his fingers. I moved my art stuff and patted the seat next to me.

"I-im sorry," he mumbles, sitting down next to me

"Why were you watching me," I ask quietly.

"I-i wasn't at first, I was here to clear my head. Then I heard singing and wanted to know where it came from. Then I saw you, i-i would never spy on anyone. . .," He says softly, stuttering.

"Okay, well it's alright I guess."

"I-im Ponyboy Curtis," he says looking at me.

"I know who you are. I'm Jonny Cade," I mumbled.

"I like that name, it suits you. Y-you have a nice voice," he says, his cheeks turning pink.

"N-not really in my opinion. But I have been told that, thanks," I said smiling.

"Well I like it, it sounds really beautiful. Where did you learn to sing like that," he asks softly.

"I-i uh taught myself. I sung as a kid all of the time," I said looking down and pushing my glasses up further.

"Oh, well I think it's good. You should join the school Choir. The teacher would be p!Eased with new members."

"I'm already in the Choir, have been for a while," I mumbled, sadness filling me that he didn't know who I was.

"Good, I bet your great."

"The teacher says so but the students not so much. . . They think I don't sound too well," I said my eyes watering.

"Nonsense! Your singing is honestly the best I've heard," he yells, excitedly.

"Y-you really. . . You really think so," I asked looking up at him.

"Positive, I don't lie," he says smiling lightly.

He really did have a nice smile and I bet he doesn't use it too often. I wipe my eyes and look at him again. He seemed to be lost in thought at the moment, looking at the sky. He's a dreamer, I can tell by what he does, he's a daydreamer with his head in the clouds. I wonder what he's thinking about. . .

"W-well Johnny, it's getting late and I promised my brothers I'd be home before dark. Wanna hand out sometime, you seem real nice," he offers quietly. "Y-you don't have too if you don't want to," he adds on quickly.

"Sure, that sounds. . . Nice," I said smiling lightly.

He nods and stands up, walking away from me. He turns and waves before continuing to walk off away to his house. I really should get home too, but I really don't want to. Despite my mind's disagreement, I pack up my things and start walking to my house. I can only hope that I'll be fine when I get home. . .

// Authors Note //

This is for the ones who hate my cliffhangers. Y'all know who you are. . . But anyway, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed this chapter. I'll see you all soon.

Till then,
