33. bonding
It was a calm evening in their mansion. Amira had just fallen asleep after her evening feed, and the house was unusually quiet.
Thalia and Shubman were sitting on the couch, the baby monitor resting on the coffee table. Thalia was curled up against Shubman, her legs stretched over his lap, and he was absentmindedly running his fingers through her hair.
"You know," Thalia started softly, "it's been a few months, and I still have to pinch myself sometimes. Like, I look at her, and I can't believe she's ours."
Shubman leaned down, kissing the top of her head. "Same, jaan. Sometimes I just stare at her, thinking, 'How the fuck did we get so lucky?' Like, she's this perfect mix of you and me, and it blows my mind every single day."
Thalia chuckled, tilting her head up to look at him. "She's gonna be a handful, you know. With your stubbornness and my sass, she's going to run circles around us."
"Good," Shubman said with a grin. "She's gonna be unstoppable. Just like her mom."
Thalia smiled and reached up to trace his jawline with her fingers. "You're such a sap when it comes to her."
"Of course, I am," he said, pulling her closer. "She's my princess. You're my queen. I'll always be a sap for my girls."
Thalia's cheeks flushed, and she hid her face in his chest. "Stop being so damn cute, Gill. It's unfair."
He chuckled, holding her tighter. "I'm just being honest, Mrs. Gill. Get used to it."
Shubman had a rare day off from training, and he decided to make the most of it. He was up before Thalia and Amira, already in the kitchen preparing breakfast.
He wore a simple white T-shirt and grey sweatpants, his hair still messy from sleep.
Thalia walked in, rubbing her eyes and adjusting her oversized sweater. "You're up early," she mumbled, her voice still laced with sleep.
"Morning, baby," he greeted, turning to her with a spatula in hand. "Thought I'd make you breakfast for a change. Pancakes okay?"
She smiled, leaning against the counter. "You're spoiling me."
"You deserve it," he said, flipping a pancake with practised ease.
"Besides, you've been doing all the heavy lifting with Amira. Let me take care of you for once."
Thalia walked over and hugged him from behind, her arms wrapping around his waist. "You do take care of me. More than you realize."
He turned his head to kiss her temple. "Good. Because I don't plan on stopping."
As the sun set, they decided to spend some time outside with Amira. The garden was bathed in golden light, and Shubman spread out a large blanket on the grass.
Amira, dressed in a soft pink onesie with bunny ears on the hood, lay on her back, gurgling happily as she looked up at the trees.
Thalia sat beside her, wearing a flowy lavender maxi dress that caught the light beautifully. Shubman lay on his side, propped up on one elbow, watching his girls with a soft smile.
"She's obsessed with the trees," Thalia said, laughing as Amira reached her tiny hands toward the leaves.
"She's curious," Shubman said. "Just like her mom."
Thalia rolled her eyes playfully. "You always say that."
"Because it's true," he said, leaning over to kiss her cheek. Then he looked at Amira and added, "You're gonna grow up to be just like your mom, baby girl. Smart, strong, and absolutely stunning."
Thalia nudged him with her shoulder. "You're gonna turn her into a little diva with all this praise."
"Good," he teased. "She deserves to know how amazing she is."
As the three of them sat there, the world seemed to fade away. It was just them, their little family, and the overwhelming love that bound them together.
